Pestilence, Plague, or Poison? Princess Alba must save the dragons before it’s too late!
When disease strikes the dragons of Mount Fornax, Alba and Fyrian suspect the sinister new troll instructor of performing dark alchemy. But a twist of magic sends suspicion falling onto Alba, making her the target of unwelcome scrutiny.
With time running out before the dragons succumb to the disease and Fyrian too weak to help, Alba must join forces with an old enemy to uncover the truth behind the plague before it turns deadly.
Join Alba on this page-turning adventure to rescue the dragons!
Book two segues into book three. There is no real break between them. The main characters remain basically the same. Alba has learned to think a little more before she jumps to conclusions and that is a good thing. Unfortunately she is still a brash teenager with little real world experience. She is doing her best, however. And her best is rather decent. Unfortunately she is up against adult mages who have been plotting for quite some time. She is also up against Fyrian, and I do agree with her that there is something very suspicious about the young dragon's insistence on rescuing their nemesis. It does not help that due to plague (the timing of my discovering of this series makes this book hilarious) causes full quarantine for Mount Fornax and the Dragon Mage Academy. The last page of the book made me furious. Yes, I saw it coming but still. That is seriously bad form! I did enjoy the read though. And it is fairly light in subject and in pace. It touches quite a bit on gender roles as well as racial bias (ogres vs. troll vs. fae vs. human) and stereotypes. Since the book is a middle age group reading level, the way it is handled is very much appropriate and probably could be used to explain and explore those issues. All in all, a solid 3.

Unsure about this instalment of the series. It was action-packed. The new creatures and magical problems are certainly creative. There was a lot of running around. But it still just was missing something for me.
This book was better than the first two, with a little romance situation going on, but I still didn’t like it as much. The plot was okay, but the writing is really not my style and I thought the main character’s actions were totally unrealistic and very cliched.
It's just so repetitive and there's no character development. Alba is constantly accusing the first person she sees and is always doing the opposite of what she's told.
Another great thrill ride of a story from Cordelia Castel. This story continued without slowing down for a moment from the ending of book #2 Poacher of Dragon. By the time the first chapter ended you were already deep in the story and trying to solve what is occurring to the Dragons of the Academy.
The world continues to grow as you learn more and more about it and it's history which is brought out in classes and then reinforced in the occurring to the MC and her classmates.
One negative about this mystery compared to others is that the MC really plays no part in solving it and the clues are not given to you. Another character solves it and while it leads to some great action events and final twist I do miss the parts of the first two books where I was trying to figure it out along with the MC.
All of the action is reserved for the final 1/3 of the book and it was really well done with some fearsome enemies and great build up to the final sequence with a good twist and which is become a habit of the author I am enjoying an abrupt ending and quick transition into the fourth book.
Our protagonist, Princess Alba, is disguised as a boy so that she can attend the Dragon Mage Academy. She is bonded to Fyrian, a green dragon who has just grown from a dragonet. Alba is using the name Bluford in the Academy, and Bluford has just overcome being expelled and has been reinstated. Now a gigantic bunnyrabbit has shown up in Academy grounds, and every dragon there is salivating over it. Fyrian manages to catch and eat the first one, and almost immediately she comes down sick. Soon, all the other dragons on Mount Fornax are sick too. Then it spreads to every cadet and every instructor. Alba comes down with it too, but the ogre manages to purge her and Fyrian of it. Evolene remains free and helps a lot throughout this adventure. The self-taught witch is becoming invaluable. I had some trouble following the plot, but hardly enough to matter.
Oh and the plot thickens!! The poor dragons have suffered in this book, but Alba is growing ever stronger. Both in mind and body. And self image. I am really, really enjoying the who dun it mysteries in this series. They leave me guessing until the end. I see Alba’s whole hidden identity thing getting more and more unraveled through this series also. It seems half the school already knows she’s not a boy. It’ll be amazing if she lasts out the entire series. This book did make me sad though, as the dragons were sick through most of it. So not as much interaction there. However, there are a few surprises throughout with a bit of a “Uh Oh” at the end. I am extremely interested in seeing how Alba gets out of her next dilemma!
Oh my what a ride! We have a slew of things happening in this book. Everything has gone totally wonkie. All the dragons are getting ill and then all the cadets, witches and professors become ill. The illness is unknown and there is only one who can help, a troll named Master Jesper. Magnar is still playing some sick game and Alba is having none of it. This book had a lot of scary moments and definitely a lot of suspense. I need to get the next book so I can find out if Alba and all her friends and Fyri can escape the clutches of King Magnar and his sick plans. Looking forward to the next book!
You know how you are supposed to love the good guys and hate the bad guys.
I spent much of my reading time yelling at the characters in the book. The bad guys for being evil, the good guys for being stupid, and the writer for creating everything this way.
Then I realized, that was the job of the writer. Well done!
This is a good book! It's great to remember that the obvious choice isn't always the answer. Learning to trust different kinds of people and to forgive others can be hard sometimes. I can't wait to read more!
Following the events of the second installment of “Dragon Mage Academy”, “Plague of Dragons” picks up right where the previous installment left us. Alba finds herself expelled from the Academy, and has to attend the Council of Dragons, where her fate in the Academy will be decided. After being reinstated, and while she has all the good will to be a model student, a new threat emerges. The dragons fall ill and, because of her bond with Fyrian, Alba shows the same symptoms, making her a suspect in the eyes of some. The illness is fatal, but no one can determine the cause or a cure. With time running out and the dragons in mortal danger, Alba sets on a new adventure with the help of her friends and teachers. But nothing is what it seems. Can she trust a notorious troll or King Magnar to help her in her race against time?
Cordelia Castel’s unique pen has once again captivated me. She has created a unique fantasy world, where magic intertwines with fast-paced adventure, mystery and suspense. With each book this fantasy world expands to include more areas, more fantastical creatures, more the magical beings, while subtly addressing personal issues and interpersonal relations that we can relate to in our modern-day life.
An excellent book and an excellent series, that I highly recommend to all fantasy fans, no matter their age!!!
