Zebediah Tully is a doomed man. His life is a mess, he has no control over it and the city he lives in is falling apart. Humankind is now an endangered species. Their world is under siege. Gangers and demons are taking over and Zeb has to stop them…but how?
I began writing fantasy fiction at the age of fourteen and have been mildly obsessed with it ever since. I completed my MA in Creative Writing, at Liverpool John Moores University. In the summer of 2009, HORIZON was shortlisted at the annual novel writing competition, Pulp Idol, part of Liverpool’s Writing On The Wall Festival. I also attended a weekend writing course at Ty Neywdd, Centre for Writing in South Wales, where all the finalists had one to one sessions with published author Jenny Newman. My main influences in the fantasy genre are: Robin Hobb (aka Megan Lindholme), Jim Butcher and David Gemmell. Hobb’s work is more indicative of classic fantasy, as is Gemmell’s and Butcher’s is a mixture of both classic and contemporary urban settings. These authors’ skills at world building, in my opinion, are supreme.
Elwyns & ogres, Gangers & half-breeds, what more could you ask from a fantasy novel? This novel was truly wonderful. I thoroughly enjoyed the read. I did have to get use to the different style of grammar where single quotes were used when ‘someone was speaking’ and double quotes were used when “quoting.” That did throw me off for the first couple of chapters. However, that is my own short-coming, not that of the novel. I want to learn more about all of the Tully men! I’m attached and can’t wait for more. I always reference grammar and editing in my reviews and I can happily say that this novel is fairly free of errors and the minor ones I saw did not even bother me, because the novel was engrossing! My only critique would be that there could be more build up between Zeb & Helen. Their story felt short, so I wasn’t as attached as I felt I should have been to that relationship. And I wanted to be attached I wanted it so bad, and I was let down. All that said, I will definitely read the rest of these novels! Katrina Jack is an excellent author and I do look forward to more of her work! FIVE STARS all the way!
I was given a free copy of this book courtesy of Booktasters and Katrina Jack to give an honest review. My Father's Son, a prequel to the Silver Flute Trilogy, tells the story of Zeb Tully who lives with unorthodox scientist, Abraham Tully. One night, after a fight with his father, he meets Joe, a resistance fighter. From then on, this opens up a world of Ogres, Elwyn's, and Gangers that also broadens Zeb's once narrow-minded viewpoint. When he confronts his father when he finds Sylvan, a pregnant Elwyn, leaving his home, he learns the awful truth. He is a half breed. The action is non stop and the pacing keeps you on your toes as Zeb learns that his brother, Jeremiah, is important in saving the world. But to help him, they both have to stay alive. This was a thrilling story from start to finish and I recommend adding it to your collection.
I’ve haven’t read the original trilogy yet and this prequel story helps introduce the reader to the terrifying world. I love that it is a fantasy in a modern setting but the most intriguing part in all the genetic possibilities from all the many races interacting with each other. I would particularly be interested in reading a collection of scientific studies and experiments pertaining to the many possible mix raced offspring. Overall the story was amazing and I highly recommend you read this then trilogy.
First off, I would like to thank Booktasters and the author Katrina Jack for providing me with a copy of this book.
Remember me as you pass by. As you are now, so once was I. As I am now, so you will be... Prepare yourself to follow me. This quote struck me as quite creepy but nevertheless true. Moving on.
Zeb Tully has had enough of his father's experiments and theories. His world had been plagued by demons and other creatures since long ago. One day, he meets Joe who changes his view of things. He leaves his home but not after certain events which happened involving his father and his mother. He finds out that he has a half-brother, Jeremiah and that he will be the one to save them all. So, Zeb has to look after his brother and also fight against the demons around him as well as inside him.
I really enjoyed reading this book. I really could imagine that I was right there with the characters. I also liked the action scenes. This book really takes you on a journey. A journey that you'll want to complete till the end. All in all, I'm glad I read it.
I never wanted a brother but zeb seriously changed my mind 😊 !! Even though he might be seen as an arrogant boy who doesn't respect an elder !
I loved how this book indicated that real demons don't sleep under our beds !! They sleep inside our heads !! Specially Joe's definition of human beings!! And their thirst for power , thinking sky and earth are created to serve them !! Labeling and dividing each other into groups !! Alienating whoever that in their ideologies seem irrelevant !
A very interesting journey written in a way in which you could picture everything as if you are actually the one experiencing it !
I have not read the Silver Flute trilogy so everything about the setting and characters of the story are new to me. The story is relatively short but very fast paced in setting up the original trilogy. I am glad the story moves at such a rapid pace - including a few time jumps as it enables readers to quickly dive into the story and be taken along for the ride. The book is well written and descriptive. Perfect for fantasy fans; whether they have read the Silver Flute trilogy or not.
A prequel to the Urban Fantasy Series: The Silver Flute Trilogy, introduces us to Zeb Tully, a young man with a tortured history and a weighty future. His battles with his father and the secret about his mother leads Zeb to join a revolution against dark and dangerous forces. His meeting with Sylvan, mother of his half-brother brings forth a destiny unexpected. Meeting Helen, a street musician, heralds new enemies. Will Zeb's half-brother be the saviour so desperately needed? A lickety-split pace combined with exciting and multifaceted characters and events, and a compelling style guarantee I will read volume one of The Silver Flute Trilogy asap.
Elves, demons, spells, the works. This book has all the fantasy action you need. The description and imagery is okay, although sometimes... not so much. I couldn't get some of the references because I haven't read the first book of the trilogy. It's fast paced - a bit too fast paced. The storyline is simple, not too complex. I kind of think it was hurried towards the end, but all in all, it's a good read.
In this world, humans and creatures live together. A rouge group of creatures want Earth for their new home and humans are in the way. Now a band of resistance fighters are joining together for the battle to save our planet. An enjoyable read and the characters are well fleshed out. Great read in the genre of fantasy creatures. Hope to read more from the series.
As far as urban fantasies go, it was a pretty good read. A bit rough with the storyline, bit perhaps that's because its the first part in a trilogy and I haven't immersed myself in it yet. Totally worth giving a try tho.
