Great storyline with interesting twists. The H is still grieving the loss of his finance and her father intends for him to remain single and grieving. The h is a good friend of the H's sister who is the matchmaker. The distant family of the h may care for her but is more impressed with the credentials of prospective suitors. The H finally confronts the almost FIL, the h is saved from a weak suitor and they finally get their HEA.
Lady Elizabeth Owens was on her way to the Thornwall estate to help take care of her very best friend Lady Agatha Hickson her brother Malcolm was the Duke of Thornwall. When Lady Elizabeth arrived a man was talking to her coachman leaving them in the coach so she got out and accosted them demanded to see the master of the castle the gentleman talking to her coachman was the master of the castle the Duke of Thornwall. He wanted to send her away because she was rude and immature and he thought she would cause some her to his sister. She informed him that she was not leaving without seeing Lady Agatha. When she and Agatha got together they were so happy to see each other once again in a couple of days Lady Elizabeth literally forced Lady Agatha to get out of bed and walk around and they could go down and dine with Malcolm that evening which they did in Malcolm was angry that Agatha had gotten out of bed but Elizabeth told him that she needed to get up and walk around and get fresh air and sunshine or she would end up in sourced rates. To find out what continue to happen you have to read the book very good book and it's enjoyable to read. There's an extended epilogue at the end if you reading it on the Kindle it may not transfer to the Kindle program it may end up in documents as were mine did and I finally found it so have some joyful times while you're reading the book.
I'd like a dollar for every time the words 'Lady Elizabeth', were repeated in the first few pages alone. Could not finish, due to the writing style. Sorry. Not sure why there are so many 5 star ratings for this one - I guess lots of people liked it - just not me.
A Second Chance for the Broken Duke: A Clean & Sweet Regency Historical Romance is not a bad book but it could definitely use some proper editing. I won't repeat the story line, as other review's have that well in hand. I will instead go over some pro's and con's I found in the novel.
Pros: Clean romance Lady Elizabeth was a likable character as was her friend, Lady Agatha. The Duke was properly tortured. It would be dreadful to lose a loved on in a fire. The Duke of Winterset, father of the lost bride, is a proper a@@hat. It is actually very sad he cannot let go of the loss of his daughter but he takes his grief and sorrow to extremes, to the detriment of all around him. Ursula was a good character, used for the Duke to relate his issues without constant inner monologue. Nice notice of how a Duke is responsible for his area, town or people in the village who work for him.
Cons: Poor technical writing, ie: improper sentence structure, ending sentences with prepositions, non-necessary verbiage/word at the end of sentences, redundancy, etc. Not paying attention to misspelled or improper words.
Repetitive same word usage. For example: the characters "grinned" or would "grin" ALL OVER THE PLACE. There are MANY more appropriate words in the English language to use to convey facial expressions. In fact, our heroine "grinned" at the Duke after he rescued her from a fire. Ummm.... no. You might "smile shakily" but you would NOT grin. Also, the words "soft" and "softly" to describe voices and voice timbre. Come on, again MANY more descriptive words could be incorporated instead of the same ones over and over and over....... And, how exactly do you "curtsy softly"???
Improper word usage for the time period. (I see this quite a bit in this genre)
Not paying attention to her characters. For example: Ursula is described as an old woman. Old women do NOT kneel on the floor to placate their Dukes.
Not paying attention to the action of the characters. For example: at a key point, it is make clear that Elizabeth is to get something for Lady Agatha to eat, as she has not eaten. Elizabeth gets distracted by eavesdropping and NEVER returns with any food. Poor Agatha. Starved to death. Also, in the beginning of the book, it was implied (or stated, I can't really remember) that Lady Elizabeth was more of an outdoor girl and did not read much, if at all. Then, towards the end of the book, all of the sudden she is a voracious reader! Pay attention to how you build your characters.
Again, not a bad book but like so many others, desperately in need of serious and proper editing.
What can I say? I loved this book. It is written in a way that is heartfelt and loving. It is a story of enemies to friends to love. The lead female character Lady Elizabeth (Lizzie) Owens and she is a wonderful character. She is the daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Winterset. She is honest, down-to-earth, free thinking, spirited, kind, thoughtful, caring and loving. The lead male character is Malcolm Hickson, Duke of Thornwall. He is a stern, irritable man locked in the past. He blames himself for the death of his fiancé four years ago. She died in a fire trying to help those who may have been trapped in the house. Malcolm has never forgiven himself for not saving her and up to this day mourns her passing. Lady Agatha is Malcolm's sister. She got thrown from a horse and broke her arm. Agatha wrote to Lizzie and asked her to come visit. Lizzie decided to go and stay with Agatha until she completely recovered. When she arrived, she got into a quarrel with a man who was talking to her driver. It turns out that he was Agatha's brother, the Duke, Malcolm. Well, Malcolm did not take kindly to Lizzie's pushy and brash behavior and almost sent her away. But Lizzie demanded to see Agatha. Agatha was thrilled to see Lizzie and Malcolm resigned himself to her presence. Malcolm and Lizzie kept bumping heads. Then they decided to start anew and their relationship blossomed. But fate threw a cruel blow to Malcolm and LIzzie. Malcolm's past came to haunt him and caused him to re-evaluate his relationship with Lizzie. Lizzie's parents were pushing her towards the future they have planned for her. Lizzie and Malcolm were separated. Malcolm missed Lizzie and Lizzie missed Malcolm. But neither of them did anything to further their acquaintance. Then the unthinkable happens and Malcolm feels he is reliving his past. This is a wonderful story of loyalty, friendship, regret, misery and love. I totally enjoyed reading this and I highly recommend it. Do not forget to read the extended epilogue it continues the story six years later.
Lady Elizabeth Owens, twenty year old daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Winterset, intends an extended visit with her dear friend, Lady Agatha, to help her recover from a sever accident. The first impressions Lady Elizabeth and the Duke of Thornwall, Lady Agatha’s brother, have does not endear either of them in the other. Once arriving at the castle the visit begins with her impatience and a miss understanding, and he really wants to send her packing even before he gets to know her.
The Duke of Thronwall was troubled trying to deal with his inheritance after the loss of his father four years earlier. Then two years later by his mother died. Four years ago he had met a young woman and fell deeply in love. They courted for two years. It was a month before they were to be married when his fiancé died in a house fire. With his parents gone, his sister living with their aunt, and the loss of Lady Sophia, for which he blames himself, he has been reclusive, lonely and depressed. He spends much time remembering and thinking about Lady Sophia. Actually, Malcom is a depressing person.
Malcom is over-protective of his sister, not wanting anything else to happen to her. He is resentful of Lady Elizabeth for, what he considers, interfering with Agatha’s recovery and worried she will cause his sister harm.
It takes a bit but Malcom finally stops having negative thoughts about Lady Elizabeth and really starts to get to know her. Malcom has a hard time letting go of Sophia not only because he loved her but he has been manipulated to not forgetting her.
What kind of accident did Lady Agatha have? How did the house fire start that killed Sophia? Who is trying to insure the Duke of Thornwall is unhappy and miserable the rest of his life? After professed that he would “move mountains to save” her life what did he do?
Disfigured, Malcolm the Duke of Thornwall has worked hard to put up a barrier around himself for protection against rejection and pain from loss of yet another loved one. That protective stance also now includes his sister Lady Agatha who has recently returned to the ancestral home, having finished her education. An unfortunate and serious accident has resulted in a broken arm among other injuries for Lady Agatha and she writes to invite her friend Lady Elizabeth Owens to come visit and assist her as she recovers. The first meeting between Malcom and Lady Elizabeth does not go well, as she mistakes the Duke for a laborer who tries to deny her even to exit the carriage, let alone go in the house to visit Agatha. Her strong protests and refusal to be told ‘no’ are taken by the Duke to be unladylike and brash. Thus begins a difficult tug-of-wills over Lady Agatha and her care. As Lady Elizabeth comes to learn, Malcolm has lost more than parents-he has also lost his precious fiancée in a fire that also disfigured him, something about which he is unable to stop blaming himself. Can Elizabeth melt the icy wall that Malcolm has built around his heart? Can they work together to help Agatha recover? Can Malcolm move beyond his long dead fiancée to start a newlife for himself? CRITIQUE: I found this a delightful story! The conflict between Malcolm and Elizabeth is comical, not mean spirited at all, making this fun to read. There is an evil person in the story that threatens to disrupt the budding relationship between Malcolm and Elizabeth, adding some suspense to the story. A clean romance with a HEA that will be enjoyed by all ages.
I received this book free from the author as part of the ARC team. This is my honest and voluntary review.
I found the story line of this book to be well worth reading. It was different from most of books on the subject matter. The main characters drew me in immediately. I enjoyed their interactions right from the start. I thought the subject matter was tastefully done, including the behavior of the antagonist. I don't want to give anything away about the book, so I'm being careful! I hate spoilers.
One of my favorite characters was a woman named Ursula. No matter what was going on around her, she was the voice of calm reason. She said things in her very wise & straight forward way that touched me. Ladies Agatha & Elizabeth both seem to be such loving spirits, just don't expect to see either back down, if they see something that they believe is wrong. Malcolm, the Duke, was definitely a wounded soul &my heart bled for him.
I loved the fact that this is a sweet and clean book. Ms. Finch's writing does not need gratuitous sex scenes within its pages, to make it a great book. I know that I am going to enjoy the books this author writes & she hasn't let me down yet. I also like the fact that I was unable to stop reading, once I started...even when a rather large package was delivered to my door! I highly recommend this book & all of Ms. Finch's books to any reader who enjoys Regency Era Romance.
Fanny Finch’s A Second Chance for the Broken Duke is precisely the “Clean & Sweet Regency Historical Romance” promised by its publisher - and a perfect example of that too. Malcolm Hickson, the Duke of Thornwall, is just the perfect damaged hero that this tale needs. He starts off so poorly with our heroine, Lady Elizabeth Owens, but we know - from his sister Lady Agatha (Aggie), from how he treats everyone around him no matter what their station, and from his backstory (the loss of his beloved fiancé in a fire and his guilt fur not being there to stop it, etc) that there really is a noble soul residing in him. Lizzy (as Aggie refers to her) finds it and does so in a beautiful fashion in this superbly written novel with its perfectly crafted plot and cast of supporting characters. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend.
When his fiancee is killed in a fire just weeks before their wedding, Malcolm Hickson, the Duke of Thornwall, thinks his life is over. The only bright spot in his life is his sister, Lady Agatha. When she is thrown from her horse, he is determined to protect her. So when Lady Elizabeth Owens, daughter to the Duke of Winterset receives a letter from from her best friend telling her of her accident, she rushes to her friend's side. But Lord Hickson thinks his sister's friend will tire her out too much, so he is determined to send the beautiful Lady Elizabeth back where she belongs. But his sister will not hear of it, because she thinks her brother and her best friend will make a good match. However, Lady Elizabeth thinks he hates her, so she disagrees. Will Lady Elizabeth heal his heart and give him a second chance at love? Can Lord Hickson let Lady Elizabeth into his heart? This was a good book. I enjoyed the characters of Elizabeth, Agatha, and Malcom. Add this book to your collection, you won't regret it.
I received this book as an ARC copy from the author and I am voluntarily leaving my review. I thought the story was heart warming and the characters very engaging. The loss of a loved one is always heart breaking and everyone grieves differently. The Duke of Thornwall fought to the very end to let go of the paint and guilt of losing Lady Sophia, the love of his life. But he finally was able to with the support of family and allow new love to blossom with the Lady Elizabeth. I loved the story and enjoyed reading it. My only criticism would be that the book is a little bit too long. I started losing interest in the middle of the book and found myself struggling to get through it so I could find out how the story ends. Also I always love an extended epilogue but find it annoying to have to go online and enter my email information again and then having to download the extended epilogue in order to read it.

I voluntarily reviewed an advance review copy of this book. This is a decent historical romance. The times and customs are portrayed well. The characters are unique and charming. Lady Elizabeth is a strong, independent and beautiful female lead and her friend Lady Agatha is entertaining and loyal. Malcolm, the Duke of Thornwall, is a good man who has been emotionally scarred by the past. The story is rich in detail and in romance. The only downsides were that at times I found the writing to be a little uneven and stilted and choppy. I also felt the story was perhaps a bit too long - it became a little tedious towards the middle of the book and I found it to be too repetitive in places. Thankfully, the writing improved and the pace picked up towards the end of the book. This was a good read, but not my favourite story by this author.
Ach this one was so nice and kinda wholesome but also deep to some degree.
I loved both MCs, the broken Duke who is caught up in the past, and the lovely lady who comes to his sister's aide and in turn, saves him as well.
The plot? To be honest, there wasn't really a Ppot there except for the romance story that was first, a sister trying to get her brother and her BF together, and later, some kind of a courtship (even though it wasn't really). And there are some subplots involving the MCs but nothing Major, nothing that really disrupts them for a long time, at least. Would have loved for them to realize what they want a Bit earlier or react a bit sooner. But hey..
Only aspect I'd criticize... The giggling the ladies have got going on. Just... It's immature. And they are both described as highly intelligent so why?
This book is about how first impressions can be wrong! When her dear friend Agatha is hurt in a riding accident Lady Elizabeth rushes to be by her side! Upon arrival she is stunned to find she is refused entrance! Aggravated by who she thinks is a servant she quickly becomes enraged only to find out the man is Lord Thornwall, Lady Agatha’s brother! After staying for awhile she discovers that Lord Thornwall is a man marked by a past tragedy. I really enjoyed this book and the characters. They seemed to have a loving friendship and everyone only wanting the best for everyone in the household! The servants are more like family having been there so long. It was a very heartwarming story despite the tragedy’s they must overcome.
This was an enjoyable clean regency romance and so much more! I enjoyed the friendship between Lady Elizabeth and Lady Agatha. I also liked seeing the change in Malcolm as time passed with these two fun-loving ladies under his roof. Though the book seemed to start out slowly, it picked up pace. I'm glad I kept on reading. Surprised by the ending that brought our H and h together! There were quite a few typos in the book. Better proofreading is needed. I was also bothered by the frequency of the word(s) "giggled, giggly, giggling, giggled" used so many times. (I counted it having been used 27 times in the book). Overall, I did enjoy A Second Chance for the Broken Duke and recommend it to those who enjoy clean regency romance!
AN ABSOLUTELY AMAZING READ!!! Wow! Talk about unpredictable. Fanny works her magic with this little gem. So touching and sincere with a plethora of emotions that will rock you to the core. All the trials and tribulations bring this magnificent read roaring to life brilliantly. The characters were intriguing, complex and realistic. The scenes were so vividly detailed and descriptive that it gives the illusion you were right there in the middle of ground zero with them. Twists and turns abound with unexpected surprises that will keep you spellbound and anxious for whats next. All the drama, uncertainty and fear along with a little suspense and you have one incredible experience. An amazing storyline and strong plot really pulls this little treasure together flawlessly. Remarkable job Fanny, thanks for sharing this little gem with us.
Lady Agatha has been thrown from her horse and has been injured. She writes to her friend Lady Elizabeth and invites her to come visit. As soon as Elizabeth arrives she gets off on the wrong foot with Agatha's brother Malcolm, the Duke of Thornwall. After a few weeks they each see a different side of the other. Malcolm has been grieving for 4 years over the loss of his fiancé. He must learn to let go and move on. Will Elizabeth be able to pull him out of his grief? What happens when Elizabeth's parents arrive at Thornwall Castle and insist she come home with them to meet a man they feel is right for her? This is a book I didn't want to put down. Get a copy and come along on this ride. You'll be glad you did. This is a clean romance as are all of Fanny's books.
An Absolute UNPUTDOWNABLE Book!! Lady Elizabeth Owens has gone to visit her dearest friend ,Lady Agatha. She was thrown from her horse and badly injured. Malcolm,Duke of Thornwall very dashing and handsome. He is Agatha's brother grieving since his betrothed, Sophia died in a horrific fire. The story line is fantastic with such emotions and engaging characters. I could not stop reading until late into the night. The story had me so focused right away. And took me right there into the Thornwall Estate and Castle with all its beauty around it. And I did not see that ending coming !
The basic plot of this novel is good, however poor editing spoilt it for me. I thoroughly dislike giving bad reviews as authors spend many hours investing themselves in a book. However, due to mixed up sentences, inconsistencies, and holes in the story, I found myself becoming confused. It would have been better if the author had put the book aside for a while and then later read it with fresh eyes so that she could pick up where lapses in the script occurred. I do hope this book can be salvaged as it could have been most enjoyable.
I liked the storyline and the interesting plot twists. The writing itself was a bit two dimensional and cumbersome in that the Duke of Thornwall was constantly being called by his full name, over and over. There was a common thread running through the book- the fear and devastation of fire, but it wasn’t really explained, especially as the two instances recounted were almost identical. The story raised more questions than it answered. Still, it was clean and fairly interesting so it earned the three stars it was given.
An excellent story line but the book contains several errors which does detract from the read as it makes you go back and reread to see if you missed things. We always want heroes that can just get up, dust themselves off and go on but yet be in touch with their emotions enough to really relate to the other main characters. Very few of these super-humans exists. Grief and guilt are some of the strongest emotions and it was good to have a more human hero that showed how much one can struggle with this.
This story holds your attention with great interest and intrigue regarding a duke whose devastating tragic experience is redeemed by a woman who chooses to love him in a way that brings healing and new life to him. The expression of true feelings throughout the story is refreshing! The fact that it is clean with an HEA ending made it all the more enjoyable. I am writing this review as an ARC member of this author. She’s a great author!!
I loved this book from the start. The main characters drew me in immediately. The way they interacted with each other was smoothly done. The author really knows how to write! I always know I can read her books without fear of inappropriate sex scenes popping up. This means I can relax and enjoy every page. I think my favorite character was Ursula. She is a calming and knowledgeable influence for all. Please give this wonderful story a look!
This was a lovely story about the Duke of Thornwall and Lady Elizabeth. The first half of the book was kind of slow but you got some of the backstory of why he was the way he was. You understand his love for his sister and his people. The second half of the story was was well worth reading and I enjoyed the epilogue and recommend downloading the extended epilogue. I would recommend this lovely story of second chances and falling in love again.
Deep depression caused by an unbearable loss can devastate a person's personality and behavior. Fanny Finch has captured this with the Duke. Now comes Miss Elizabeth whose love can break him out of his prison of guilt and seclusion. I wanted to shake him myself. Anyway, this is a great book with a wonderful storyline and characters. Great job Fanny.
The story is a good one, but the over use of the H's title is enough to drive the reader to distraction. Take out 3/4 of the use of "The Duke of Thornwall" and replace it with his name, "my brother", "your brother", "he", etc. The Duke even refers to himself by his title. The conversations are stiff and stilted. The only natural -sounding conversations are between the Duke and Ursula.
This was a very good book written by Fanny Finch and I loved reading it. I really couldn't put it down, I fell asleep reading it. A great friend, a friend's terrible accident, a scarred Duke still in mourning, servants who loved the Duke, parents and a second chance at love. All of this and whole lot more to the book. If this is a book you would be interested in, buy it and read all of what I didn't say about the book. Enjoy it, you will.
This was another sweet yearning romance mixed with putting the past behind in order to live again. Elizabeth and Malcolm do not initially hit it off. While both Elizabeth and Malcolm did a lot of self reflection, self-doubt and reliving a tortured past, I felt the story was quite slow to progress. Still, it was satisfying to see a HEA materialize in the end.
I received an ARC and am voluntarily sharing my honest review.
Awesome! I received this as an ARC reader. The author never disappoints. The story line is so well written and moves smoothly. The characters are so lifelike that you get lost as if you are part of this story. If you like a story with hope from despair, you will enjoy this. When you have a best friend, sooner or later you are all family.
