In Dragon Compass, by John Bueter, we follow Raizen, a martial artist, who must journey together with his legendary (for a lot of reasons) instructor Chun, to become a dragon warrior, before competing in a fighting tournament that will decide the next shogun, ruler of the world. But everyone, except a few friends they meet on their way, are out to stop Raizen.
Once you start this book, you won’t be able to put it down. This is a pure non-stop action and the numerous fight scenes are all very well done. What makes them stand out is the fact that Raizen is up against very different opponents, each using different weapons or even magic, and each fight has its own choreography.
The cast is also brilliant, and the interactions between our group of travellers are sometimes funny, sometimes moving, but never dull. Bueter even gives us glimpses into the past of some of the bad guys, which really make us realize that not everything is black or white.
Overall a very enjoyable ride, and luckily this is just the book one of Raizen – Can’t wait for the next ones!

A poorly written ripoff of the mortal Kombat stories. Frustrating to try & read, I gave up before finishing it
