Me in the Middle
One day Isabel finds a box in her mother's closet, and inside the box is a photograph of a girl dressed in old-fashioned clothes. Ten-year-old Bel is enchanted to discover that the girl is her great-grandmother Beatrice, her Bisa Bea, and that she and her great-grandmother look very much alike.
Bel convinces her mother to let her borrow the treasured photo, promising to look after it carefully. To keep her Bisa Bea close to her heart, she tucks the picture inside the waistband of her shorts before she goes to school. To her dismay, by the time she returns home, the picture is missing.
But something unusual has happened. Suddenly it is as if Bisa Bea is alive inside her, telling Bel what life was like when she was a girl. Bel loves hearing the stories about the old days - until her great-grandmother starts to tell her how to behave. She started her career as a painter in Rio de Janeiro and New York City. After studying Romance languages she did a PhD with Roland Barthes at the 'École pratique des hautes études' in Paris. She worked as journalist for the magazine 'Elle' in Paris and the BBC in London. In 1979, she opened the first children’s literature bookshop in Brazil, 'Malasartes'.
In 1969, Ana Maria Machado started to write. "I belong to that generation of writers who began to write during the military dictatorship, as children’s literature, alongside poetry and song texts, were amongst the few literary forms with which, through the poetic and symbolic use of language, you could make the ideas of a joie de vivre, individual freedom and respect for human rights known." Her story 'Menina Bonita do laço de fita' (1986) about a white and a black rabbit who marry and have a whole hoard of black, white and black and white patterned children, is a charming book about the living together of diverse ethnic groups. In 'Era uma vez um tirano' (1982) three children defy a tyrant who has forbidden colour, thoughts and any happiness. Without pointing fingers, Ana Maria Machado always dresses up her messages in humorous stories and trusts the ability of her young readers to also read between the lines.
Similar to many Brazilian children’s book authors of her generation, Ana Maria Machado stands in the tradition of the first great children’s book author, Jose Bento Monteiro Lobato (1882–1948). Her writing is marked, in the style of "magical realism", by a subtle mix of social satire and fantastic elements as well as a conscious and playful use of language and narrative structures. In 'História meio ao contrario' (1978), Ana Maria Machado turns the classic narrative structure of the fairy tale on its head and lets her story begin with: "And if they didn’t die, then they are still alive today" and end with "once upon a time".
In 'Bisa Bia, Bisa Bel' (1982), one of her central works, Isabell’s internal dialogue with her dead great-grandmother, Bisa Bia, and her own great-grandchild from the future, Bisa Bel, becomes a magical journey to the invisible connections between the generations, which finally allow Isabell to find her own way. For the author, fantasy also means to expand the sense for space and time and to allow reality and fantasy to mix with each other.
Just as brilliantly in ‘Palavra de Honra’ (2005, Engl: Word of Honour) Machado tells the story of a Luso-Brazilian family which has become very wealthy since their arrival in the 19th century. The reader encounters Letícia, who tries to reconstruct her own story out of the dispersed remains of the family legacy.

Leído para #LIJFeministaLat

Este fue uno de los libros que este año leí para el evento especial de #LIJFeministaLat y uno de los libros principales por los cuales me empecé a interesar que estaban escribiendo los latinoamericanos en el panorama de la literatura juvenil. Ana María Machado presenta la historia de varias generación chocando en opiniones y en maneras de hacer las cosas. Isabel se encuentra con un retrato de su bisabuela y se lo lleva a la escuela. En el retrato, su bisabuela Beatriz parece de su edad (que raro es tener una bisabuela que parece casi de tu edad), pero se viste de manera muy diferente y parece mucho más rígida. Poco después, Isabel descubre que puede comunicarse con Bea, que es muy diferente a ella y fue criada por otros valores.
Este pequeño libro, que yo recomiendo para mayores de ocho o nueve años, nos presenta una perspectiva muy interesante sobre el paso del tiempo. Bea se enoja cuando Bel corre y salta, le dice que eso no es de una niña decente y bien criada. Sin embargo, jugar como lo hace es normal para Isabel y piensa que su bisabuela es una anticuada. De todos modos, de ella aprende muchas cosas. Por ejemplo, secretos de familia y cosas sobre ella misma. En el libro se conjuntan tres tiempos completamente diferentes y, aunque admito que a veces puede resultar un poco confuso, me parece de lo más interesante. Nos deja ver como vemos a otras generaciones que vinieron antes de nosotros y como no debemos de juzgarlas, además que para los niños, seguramente, les creará la curiosidad de investigar sobre sus raíces. Totalmente recomendado este libro editado por el Fondo de Cultura Económica y de la autora Ana María Machado, a quien ya he mencionado otras veces en el blog.
Otra cosa digna de mencionar es que el libro está ilustrado por Ignase Blanco y que las ilustraciones son preciosas, complementan muy bien a la historia. Y son todas como las de la portada: estilizadas y muy sencillas.

Kızımın bana tavsiye ettiği ilk kitap "İçimdeki Büyükanne" :) Bu yüzden hemen okudum tabi...
Çok güzel bir kurgusu var. Küçük bir kız, onunla konuşan büyük büyük büyükannesi (yani anneannesinin anneannesi) ve küçük küçük torun (yani torunun torunu) Bir yanda sorumluluğu temsil ettiğini söyleyebileceğimiz nine, öbür yanda özgürlüğün sesi torun, aralarında da "Ben benim!" diyen esas karakter. Aslında insanın bu örgünün toplamı olduğu anlamak için güzel bir hikaye, iyi bir kurgu... (Bu kurguyu Freud'un id-süperego-ego olarak okumak da mümkün, daha anlaşılır, daha eğlenceli...)
Son sayfalarındaki didaktik satırlar olmayaydı iyiydi, ama o kadar da eleştirel olmayalım :))

Uma história entre o passado e o futuro, sobre a evolução das liberdades individuais mas também sobre a importância de conhecer e respeitar os antepassados e os seus costumes. Isabel vai descobrir, com a ajuda de duas personagens inusitadas, as mudanças no papel das mulheres na sociedade e a importância de conhecer a História para preparar o futuro. É uma história criativa e sensível, publicada originalmente em 1981.

This one was strange, and not in a good way, really. It unintentionally read like a sad story about a girl with some form of schizophrenia, and the writing was clunky at best.

Una forma genial y tierna de tocar el tema de los ancestros.
Me hubiese gustado que algunas partes se desarrollaran más como lo sucedido con Sergio pero entiendo que es un libro dirigido a los niños.
El final es muy emotivo y deja un claro mensaje.

Lo empecé a leer porque quería algo tranqui, más bien infantil para calmar un poco la ansiedad. Me llamó la atención por el título que es bastante curioso.
Lo leí en un ratito, pero la verdad es que no me gustó. Me dejó bastante fría, no lo entendí muy bien. Tiene un mensaje interesante para dar pero me parece que no se transmitió bien. Algo que no me gustó para nada, y me impidió disfrutar de la historia, es la cantidad de frases machistas que encontré en boca de los personajes. Me decepcionó mucho en ese aspecto, teniendo en cuenta que es un libro dirigido a un publico infantil.

Me in the Middle by: Ana Maria Machado (YM1492m)
I really enjoyed this book. I gladly give it 5 stars. It was a real page turner which made it easy to get through the 110 pages quickly. It starts with a little girl named Isabel coming home from school finding her mom cleaning up. Her mother doesn’t clean often but when she does it’s very thorough and lasts two to three days. As Isabel walked through the house she could see where her mom had cleaned already. She found her in the bedroom sitting on her bed holding a little box.
Isabel rushed right over to the bed and asked her mother what was in the beautifully decorated box. Her mother said she didn’t know but it must be something special. Isabel kept asking questions about the box that her mother couldn’t answer. Finally, her mom said let’s open it and she took out a picture with a beautiful little girl from a long time ago. Isabel asked her mom who is this beautiful girl in the old dress and her doll with the matching dress .Her mother said it’s your great grandmother when she was about your age. Isabel told her mom why she didn’t know that she had a great grandma and before her mom could answer that question Isabel asked five more.
Isabel was so excited she decided to begin a journey of discovering who her great grandma Bisa Bea was along with all the other things going on in her busy life. Isabel went to school so excited about discovering who her great grandma was that she asked to borrow the picture so she could show it off. She told her teacher, Dona Sonia who is a history buff about her wanting to find out about her great grandma. Dona Sonia was so intrigued by the idea that she made it a class project for the students to study the nineteenth century the time period when their grandparents and great grandparents were born.
This book had just enough art work to really paint a good picture of what was going on. It would be great for grades 2-5. It could work as a good read aloud. It was so much fun to read about all of the drama she had going on at school while learning about her great grandma bought back memories of my elementary school years.

Que bom é conhecer um novo autor (neste caso, autora)!
Adorei este livrinho infantojuvenil, que li numa edição de 2023, da Tinta da China.
O estilo de escrita é delicioso, com uma linguagem muito expressiva e pitoresca. E a história tem a dose certa de fantasia e realidade, humor e seriedade.
De uma forma breve, muito leve e cativante, a protagonista (Isabel Miranda) conduz-nos numa reflexão sobre a condição feminina ao longo de gerações de mulheres, desde a bisavó Bia à bisneta Beta.
Vale a pena ler!

É uma experiência tão linda reler o livro preferido da infância. Nada como mergulhar novamente nas tramas e nós dessa narrativa tão preciosa e nas ilustrações delicadas que me marcaram profundamente.

Literatura infantil brasileira — conceito que não me dizia nada. E eis que @na.cama.com.os.livros e @silveria.miranda, no Clube do Livro Livrólicos Anónimos, traem a coleção Pererê da @tintadachina para o spotlight. A princípio não me senti muito atraída, mas depois de olhar para as capas da coleção por alguns minutos, vários foram ocupando espaço na minha gula de leitora (ou compradora, vá).
De entre os vários, esta “Bisa Bia, Bisa Bel” foi um dos dois que escolhi para ler, e escolhi sem nenhuma informação sobre o mesmo. Apesar de estar no grupo de leituras partilhadas desde o início do mês, evitei ler as partilhas e, assim, o que o livro me trouxe, quando o terminei, foi completamente impoluto (coisa rara por estes dias).
Então, “Bisa Bia, Bisa Bel” é um livro genial.
Podia terminar aqui o que tenho a dizer, porque genial resume o que penso sobre o dito, mas elaboro um pouco mais:
Um registo infantil/pré-púbere descontraído e divertido, capaz de criar identificação fácil (com os meus quase 40 anos foi-me natural ligar-me a Isabel), que oferece reflexão social e feminista. Fá-lo sem crítica aberta, oferecendo lenha para a fogueira de reflexão, capacidade que se encontra em desenvolvimento acelerado na faixa etária que será alvo do livro. Percebo linhas de raciocínio que levantam questões inevitáveis, descobertas que Isabel faz e que qualquer criança transportará para a sua família.
E a família, o relevo dos que vieram antes, o papel do próprio nessa cadeia que continua pelos que virão depois… Confesso que esta vertente, esta ligação contínua que é o fio condutor da história, foi o que mais me agradou. Somos parte, o que somos cria o que vem, mas não o determina, e isso é tão verdade, tão real e, de tão real, não se vê. Gostei muito de o perceber tão lindo neste texto.
“Bisa Bia, Bisa Bel” é um lindo texto. Um livro que agradeço ter comprado, que espero ter por perto, à mão das meninas que estou a criar, e que adoraria discutir com elas. Que este dura pelo tempo, além do que já durou

Mamá me regaló este librito hace cuatro años y quién sabe por qué no lo había leído. En la brevedad de sus páginas se desliza el tema del trabajo doméstico y los cuidados, la necesidad de recuperar nuestras genealogías familiares y cómo la historia propia es una fuente de aprendizaje del mundo. Me gustó ver que aunque se trata de un texto de 1982, plantea la importancia de ser fieles a nosotras mismas y defender quiénes somos. Un "yo soy yo" en voz de una niña que no está dispuesta a ceder sus pantalones para jugar ni su apellido ni su personalidad y cómo esas pequeñas decisiones dialogan con tiempos pasados y futuros de otras mujeres.

Lo bueno:
*Las ilustraciones son bellísimas, fueron lo que mas disfruté.
*Toca tema muy importantes como los roles de género, el respeto entre compañeros y la importancia de los abuelos en la crianza.
Lo malo:
*Si yo que soy una mujer adulta, tuve problemas para entender la línea de tiempo y las diversas "perspectivas" en la narrativa, no me quiero imaginar lo confuso que debe ser para un niño.
Lo bueno:
*Las ilustraciones son bellísimas, fueron lo que mas disfruté.
*Toca tema muy importantes como los roles de género, el respeto entre compañeros y la importancia de los abuelos en la crianza.
Lo malo:

Me cayeron muy bien las protagonistas, cada una con sus ideas relacionadas con su época, cada una con sus costumbres pero buscando cómo comunicarse y entenderse. Me gustó mucho el mensaje de buscar la propia identidad a partir de la tradición y la familia.
Además las ilustraciones de Ignasi Blanco complementan la historia con un estilo muy bonito.
Muy recomendable para lectores jóvenes y quienes deseen una historia de amor fraternal.

Essa foi a minha primeira experiência literária em que me lembro de ter praticamente engolido o livro. Eu estava na 4⁰ série, e vi esse livro jogado na mesinha da biblioteca, e pensei "por que não?". Em pouquíssimo tempo, acabei a leitura, e digo com firmeza que foi um dos melhores livros que já li durante a infância. Tem uma escrita fácil, e ao mesmo tempo envolvente. Você não consegue parar de ler até terminar. Acho que toda criança deveria ler.

June 27, 2022Primero estaba flipando con el hecho de comunicarte con un familiar que vivió o vivirá en otro tiempo-espacio al de uno, luego, medité un poco y no sé qué tan agradable serie charlar con mi bisabuelo, o con mi bisnieto 😅. Las charlas con Bisa Bea y con Nieta Bea, son interesantes porque en ellas se discute sobre por ejemplo, el papel de la mujer en la sociedad.

Li esse livro novamente porque ele faz parte da minha memória afetiva da infância. Ana Maria Machado traz uma leveza indiscutível em seus livros e essa homenagem aos avós é realmente bonita.

I really didn't like this book at all. I think it just must not be my kind of book. It's is really cheesy. The setting is unclear, but I suppose it is set in Brazil since the author is Brazilian and the names of characters are spanish. It kind of reminded me of Junie B. Jones, in that it is written in the voice of a juvenile spunky girl. But one of her major dillemas is that she likes her friend, Sergio, who kisses her. That kind of plot would not found in the life of Junie B. The idea of the book is magical. Her great-grandmother and her great-granddaughter live inside her at the same time and offer her advice on her life. Some of the language indicates that it's not a book from the states. For example, the phrase "make pipi" for "going to the bathroom."
I would not recommend this book! ...well, now that I think about it, maybe some of my delayed readers who are on a 2nd-3rd grade reading level but in 5th or 6th grade would enjoy it.
