The Other: Her past life won't let go

Rate this book
18 year-old Kaetlyn O'Sullivan is just a normal Irish girl, living on the southwest coast of Ireland, but that's where normal ends. Kaetlyn is having recurring dreams, visions, about places she has never been or seen, and yet, which haunts her daily. Sent to a psychologist for help, they soon discover that her dreams are memories from her past life, and at the same time of that discovery, the Irish military exhume an alien craft buried in a cliffside nearby. When the dots connect, and Kaetlyn realizes that she died in that very craft, and that she had a mission, a reason for coming to Earth, all hell breaks loose as major powers go toe to toe, trying to access the ship and its technology, while the only person who can get inside it and activate its system, is Kaetlyn herself. A paranormal thriller with a twist.

"What an extraordinary book! It blends my favorite concepts such as history, psychology, past life, and spirituality, plus loads of twists and turns that made me unable to put it down until finished. I felt as if I was reading the script of a future motion picture, one of the magnitude of movies such as "Interstellar" or "First Contact"." A.G Mogan, author of Love Affairs
The Other is an amazing and exciting story!
I refuse to ruin anyone else's appreciation of this terrific story by telling too much. Instead, I will limit myself to sharing my thrills and love of the story, the realistic characters, and the excitement knowing the story isn't over. - JanR
“This book was incredible.” - Elaine M.
"An instant page turner..."- Marina Osipova, author of The Cruel Romance
"Réal Laplaine has written a true masterpiece that is hard to put aside, even when you HAVE to sleep. The story unfolds in separate, but entangled lines of events. Real has mastered tempo and “shifting” of the entangled stories so that you as the reader are hooked to the story, as if you were there. I highly recommend the book for everyone of a broad mind that likes the unknown, intermingled with geopolitics, past-life and with a touch of an alien interception with a positive and do-good agenda. Cannot wait until the follow-up is here!" - Johnny A.

"The truth is the only thing that nobody will believe."
- George Bernard Shaw

"Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear."

I write high-concept thrillers, literary fiction, action-packed thrill rides, weaved around issues affecting our world today, which pull back the curtain to expose deeper truths behind the facade of mediocrity, the lies and stories we are fed to keep us from seeing the real picture. As far as literary fiction goes, I like to delve into what makes my characters tick, giving the reader a closer sense of identity with them and what motivates them, what their inner demons or the voice of their soul is saying. I am a true believer that we are, individually and collectively speaking, capable of producing a great culture where war, racism, inequality and the insane imbalance of wealth and resources in the world are largely things of the past, and where the collective and individual social consciousness is raised to a level where society focuses on equality, potential, creativity, tolerance and love - the true elements of advance. There are billions of galaxies out there beyond our tiny planet, waiting to be explored, and in them, other races to be met – and to reach them, the road ahead must be paved with the stones of a higher culture, a greater humanity, something we are capable of achieving if we push the edges of the box we find ourselves living in and reach for those stars.

Born in French-Canada, and later growing up in Ontario, Canada, Réal Laplaine's sense of adventure sent him on many bicycling trips at a young age. At sixteen he was flying single engine planes and by eighteen, he and his best friend hitchhiked across Canada into some of the remotest parts of the nation, to the Yukon and Alaska, a trip that profoundly changed him. After reading Jonathan Livingston Seagull, by Richard Bach, he set himself on a journey to find deeper meaning in life, a journey, after a long career in marketing, recruiting and sales, landed him where he truly wanted to be - a writer. Since his first book, The Buffalo Kid, he has published fourteen other books and sees no end to that road - at least until the road comes to an end.
- George Orwell, author of 1984

THE OTHER by Real Laplaine
The book was incredible. Very engaging, so hard to put down, read in less than a day. This is the first in the Out-Step series. It will keep you on the edge of your seat with realistic events and sci-fi mixed in. Wonderful read. Cannot wait for the next one to come out.

What an extraordinary book! It blends my favorite concepts such as history, psychology, past life, and spirituality, plus loads of twists and turns that made me unable to put it down until finished. I felt as if I was reading the script of a future motion picture, one of the magnitude of movies such as "Interstellar" or "First Contact". I can predict this book will be made a movie someday. The concept of global warming is discussed as a serious threat. I loved Kaet and her rebellious, smart, sarcastic attitude. She made me feel as if humanity should know better, and in fact it does, yet it continuously decides to turn a blind eye to the many issues surrounding it. An eye opening book overflowing with adventure, magic, and possibility. Can't wait for the next novel in The Out-Step Series.

A quickly paced, highly suspenseful chronicle
In an easy to read, entertaining narrative, Laplaine delivers the topic, which is a burning dilemma of the modern world (to avoid spoilers, I’ll refrain from saying more). It is obvious to see how much research went into this book and how perfectly the author interweaved it with the story.
An instant page turner, it kept me on the edge of my chair till the last page was turned.
I would recommend it to all and especially to teenagers and young adults—it’s their time to decide how the raised issue can be solved.

It was bad enough being an adopted teenager of color in the rural Irish town of Bantry, but when a terrifying recurrent dream pushes Kaetlyn O’Sullivan to the edge of sanity, things really get out of hand. Fearing for the safety of teachers and fellow students, the Dean of St. Michael’s School bans Kaetlyn from class until she completes psychiatric treatment.

Fortunately for Kaetlyn her psychiatrist, Dr. Serena Bohannon, is just the person she needs to help decipher her cryptic dream and get her life back on track—even if that life turns out to be someone else’s: a dead alien.

At the exact moment of Kaetlyn’s birth, a mysterious metallic object hurtles through the atmosphere and disappears over the Celtic Sea. Eighteen years later, a decrepit man spots a gleaming object protruding from a seaside cliff near Bantry.

In record time, the Irish, United States, and Russian navies converge on the location, each with their own agenda. Nevertheless, their efforts to unlock the secrets of the object prove futile, for only one person holds the key to its mysteries: Kaetlyn O’Sullivan.

The Other is a timely work of geopolitical science fiction with plenty of plot twists that kept me turning pages late into the night. I love Réal Laplaine’s creative imagination and unique style and look forward to reading more of his books.
