When you have the power to raise things from the dead...you get a lot of people asking for a favor.
Jakub Russo just graduated from the magic academy as a necromancer - a mage who raises things from the grave. In an RPG-like world, he makes his magic stronger by practising his spells and using them in clever ways.
When he takes his first academy assignment, he finds trouble. Cut off from the protection of the academy and in a hostile land, he'll have to improvise if he wants to survive. He needs to level up, learn new spells, and use them in creative ways.
Necromancers have the power to cheat death...but that doesn't mean they can escape it.
It may be a bit tongue in cheek to describe a necromancy story as visceral (ok it is), but that’s exactly the word I’d use best here, because you are definitely cast into the trenches with Jakub, seeing what he sees and feeling what he (and some around him) feel. The story isn’t some grand sweeping thing; in fact it has a pretty short physical range - but it’s a very good story. We have a new and different take on magic, a new milieu to explore (and try to come to grips with) and heroes and villains in it that are (generally) not completely one or the other. That’s probably the thing that stands out most here: actions make a man, no matter how deep in death he stands.
A very good story, with good (not perfect) editing, and definitely recommended.
There is a inconsistency. The mentor in early chapter was not aware of the student until the student helps the teacher out. To carry boxes. Later the mentor actually saved the student from a cult and was involved with him from the start of necromancer school.
Otherwise a fine book with a strong but not over powerful character who is trying to do right in a bit clear cut world.
This book had a good premise and then everything after failed. The writing is horrid, the pacing nonexistent, the editing just bad. Nothing redeemable, scrap it and start over.
Did not finish. The author goes out of his way to convince us that the MC is worthless on his own. Therefore when the master necromancer dies with the opposing necromancer closing in, it became unbelievable to me that the MC would pull things out.
I'm always confused by authors who put so much effort into convincing the reader the MC is incompetent.
Bottom line: Questionable read. You are probably better off trying another book.

An Interesting litRPG Premise that Shows Promise 3/5
There are some parts of this book that were really well done and I really like some of the ideas that it sets up.
Ludwig is of course and excellent character and I thoroughly enjoyed every time he showed up in the book. The other characters all had moments where I enjoyed them but felt somewhat inconsistent.
The litRPG elements of this book I think actually hurt a reasonable story and premise that was actually very interesting. The idea of two necromancers who act as covert agents going around and resurrecting the dead for their secrets has a lot of promise and I wish this part of it was explored more.
A bit over half way through the book we started getting some POV changes as the plot started to pick. Some of these were fairly well done and I actually would have preferred if these were started earlier as they added some need depth to the plot.
Overall its a solid starting novel for a series that I would recommend if you enjoy litRPG. I've already picked up book 2 and hope to start that sometime soon.
From names changing early in the book (Jolo to Lolo), the spelling of a reagent changing halfway through (orrAgrass to orrOgrass) and the myriad of sentences that just didn't make sense from not having been read, really took away from the story for me. It's a nice little adventure with some great concepts. The video game aspect is fine for anyone who isn't into game mechanics but a bit jarring for anyone who is - I would have preferred to have skipped the experience bar simulator. Won't be continuing the adventure.
I didn’t like it, but then again I never made it past the first half of the book and it’s not necessary bad. Just the MC’s tendency to go off into his head and not just do the obvious things, plus the huuuuge text size of everything related to his levels and magic just ruined it for me.
Overall a very good start to the series. Interesting loot system and expansive and yet not too overly complicated skill/experience system. My only complaint would be that the beginning of the book doesn't give as much backstory on the world and magic as I would have liked. Other than that a solid first book in a series and really good LitRPG book.
Not what I was expecting .this book actually was good !! I had given up on the game books because they basically are the same..This book was entertaining and fun to read!!
I liked it. It dident go like I thought it would. The characters felt real and fleshed out. Skill progression was interesting. Was a great read will get the next one
