It's been a pleasure spending time with the O'Leary Family, immigrants to New York in the early 1900s. In Love's Faithful Promise, the focus is on the two youngest in the family: Deirdre and Connor. Deirdre is a nurse aspiring to be a doctor while Connor is pleased to finally have earned a position of importance in his father's stable.

I look forward to this author's next series in 2018.

I wasn't a fan of the previous books from the series, so I didn't have much expectations for this book. I knew that I wouldn't like it and I didn't.

Let me tell you why.

This review has some spoilers, so be aware of it, dear reader. Thank you for understanding.

I thought that I was ready to read again about all the oh and ah's coming from the main characters from the moment they met for the first time, but I still got annoyed. How it's possible for all these characters to be beautiful and handsome is beyond me. Average people can't seem to exist in romance books like this. Or in the romance books in general. I can't really tell, because I haven't read much romance stories.

Anyways, I didn't like any of the couples. Matthew and Deirdre's relationship failed for me from the very start, because from my perspective it seemed forced. Matthew didn't want to come to Irish Meadows. He had his daughter and his job and he seemed to take care of everything just fine. But Deirdre came with a request to help her mother - not caring at all about Matthew's patients btw, because of course, her mother's needs were more important that anyone else's needs. When Matthew said no, she requested to watch him while work so she would use her knowledge to help her mom - and she did not care about Matthew's opinion about it. And of course she also felt the need to correct Matthew about his methods.

Because Matthew was always wrong and she was always right.

No, for real, for me it really seemed that way. I felt sorry for Matthew, because whatever he had decided, he was thrown into a corner by either Deirdre or her mom and on the end they decided for him.

And how convenient for Deirdre was that in the moment she came with her request to help her mom, Matthew's daughter felt sick and the ideal place for her to recover was Irish Meadows?

I also didn't like how Deirdre constantly told herself how a bad idea would be to stay close to Matthew, but proceeded to do exactly that.

I also didn't like the fact that when Matthew met Deirdre, he realized that he was never in love with his wife. He only felt love with Deirdre, because OF COURSE.

Also why the hell did we get the scene with Matthew telling Deirdre how his mom died? That had to be a traumatic experience for him, but the author did absolutely nothing with it!

Connor and Jo were worse. Connor seemed like an obsessive stalker in this book. The moment he realized that Jo is actually a girl, he couldn't leave her alone. It was really worrying. How convenient for him that she thought that he was handsome and didn't go to the police.

Connor was such a strange character in this book. He was so flat. If it wasn't for the romance part, he would have nothing to do here. He didn't even have one scene with his supposedly sick mother. And don't even get me started with his relationship with Deirdre. They were supposed to always be together as children, but they barely interacted in this book. He barely interacted with anyone from his family. His only priority here was Jo and Jo only. I wonder if Connor would still be so protective of her if she was average or even ugly. Probably not.

I also didn't like that the only O'Leary that I like (Adam) was not in this book at all. Brianna supposedly graduated in the previous book, but I have no idea what kind of degree she has. Does she even have a job? Personally I think not. She wanted so badly to be educated and I guess it was all for nothing, because she became the standard wife and mother 🤷🏼‍♀️

Anyways, it's probably all I wanted to say. I will never ever read any of these books again, but I do not give up on the romance genre.

Courage to dream - my rating:
Irish Meadows: ⭐⭐ (2/5)
A Worthy Heart: ⭐⭐⭐ (3/5)
Love's Faithful Promise: ⭐ (1/5)

I'm a little bit speechless over this grand finale of the Courage to Dream series....okay, not really... more like I'm bordering on super gushing and I'm tongue-tied over trying to figure out what to say. Well, that's sort of speechless, right?

First off -- best conclusion to a series ever!!! I finished it on the bus and I was so overcome with a mix of giddy and sad that I gave a gusty sigh and said something like, "I don't know whether to laugh or cry that was such a good ending!" Out. Loud. Which earned me odd looks from fellow commuters. Kinda embarassing, but not enough to wipe the silly grin off my face or stop me from hugging the book before I carefully put it back in my bag.

So I'm feeling replete from a story well told, and already nostalgic over the O'Learys and all the characters and pretty much every single blade of grass in Irish Meadows (horse farm). Sigh. I'm really not ready to let go.

Deirdre -- all grown up and spunky as all get out. Determined to get her way no matter what. With a heart so full of love and kindness and faith. The perfect foil for the rather jaded Matthew. He comes to life as his relationship with Deirdre grows. And so does his daughter. So many tender moments. And funny ones. And infuriating ones. And -- oh my goodness the toe-curling ones! Thud!!!!! Exquisitely delicious.

And then there's the surprising bonus of an additional romance for brother, Connor O'Leary. The kind of love story that makes a reader squirm with delight as unexpected events unfold. Not to mention adding even more toe-curling to the book. I may need an iron to straighten my poor toes! :-)

And Mason has blessed her readers with a tantalizing glimpse into the lives of the entire O'Leary clan -- the past heroes and heroines who captured our hearts in Irish Meadows and A Worthy Heart. No need to have read the first two books in order to enjoy this one -- but seriously, after you read Love's Faithful Promise you'll be desperate to read the others so you might as well give in now and get the whole series!

Masterful storytelling, stupendous romance and a moving inspirational thread earn this novel a place of honour on my keeper shelf.

What I Loved...

While many other writers water their writing down by stretching out storylines, author Susan Anne Mason loves to pack in as much story as she can get into a single novel. I love that we get both a main and minor storyline that wrap up by novels end. So this series ended up with seven loves stories in a three novel series. LOVE it! (Each novel with two storylines and a very minor storyline of the parents woven throughout the entire series)

The minor storyline of Connor and Jo in this novel ended up being my favorite of all. I really would have loved had this been a main plot.

What I Liked...

As much as I loved Connor and Jo's story, I really enjoyed the main story with Deirdre and Matthew. It did take a a bit longer than I like to get warmed up but once it did, I was all in and ended up staying up past bedtime to finish it.

POSSIBLE SPOILER....
I was so pleasantly surprised that Mason didn't take the road most traveled in resolving Deirdre's dilemma regarding her future. I am so used to characters gettung it all at the end. It is nice reading a more realistic ending that is still plenty happy!
END SPOILER...

I always like to see what previous characters are up to and Mason gives us plenty of that with the O'Leary Family. It always makes you feel like part of the family.

Other...

This is my favorite covers of the series. I pictured Deirdre this way.

This is a standalone novel. In fact, I read A Worthy Heart (Book 2) just six months ago and did forget a little of who was who before it all rushed back, but even before then, I didn't have trouble keeping up. However, I always suggest reading the others in the series to get more enjoyment out of it.

I am sad to see the end of the series, but I look forward to Mason's new work.

Reading. Writing. Romance.

Love’s Faithful Promise is Book 3 in the Courage to Dream series, and you will not be disappointed at all, it is an awesome addition to the first two books, and if your like me, when it is ended you will be wanting more!
This is Deidre O’Leary’s story the nurse who wants desperately to become a doctor, and at the early part of the twenty-century it was a very difficult task. This story begins with her mother having a stroke and her desire to get her the best possible help, and when Dr. Matthew Clayborn is located in Toronto Canada, she is sent on a mission to convince him to come to help. So the paths of these two individuals are set into motion, and their fate rests within them, and all that love them.
Deidre with her dreams, and Matthew with his feeling of failure, and a loveless marriage behind him, but his little daughter may just be the answer to all that is going on between them.
There is also a new hired hand on the ranch, and another member of the family is about to open their own doors.
A great read, and the only bad part was coming to the end and turning the last page.
I received this book through Net Galley and Bethany House Publishing, and was not required to give a positive review.

This third and final book in Susan Anne Mason's 'Courage to Dream' series was the best yet, in my opinion. Set in 1922 Canada and New York, it tells the story of the last O'Leary daughter and son, although his is the secondary in the story.

Widower Dr. Matthew Clayborne is devoted to his work and his young daughter. Nothing else is important to him, it seems. Deirdre O'Leary bursts into his office requesting he use his skills to help her mother, who has suffered a stroke. He refuses, but when his daughter suffers yet another health scare, he accepts Deirdre's offer to come to the peace of her family's farm. This will help both his daughter and Deirdre's mother.

Matthew is burdened by many things and can't seem to trust God for his future. Deirdre, too, has a problem with trust in one area. Will these two people truly allow God to direct their paths? Sometimes it seems our dreams aren't coming true, when God only has different, better dreams for us.

This novel was well written with believable characters all round. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This was a fun and easy-to-read story. Nothing spectacular for me, but I did enjoy the characters.

Content: lots of kisses with unmarried pairs; a birth scene

What blew off a star for me was one out-of-place and inappropriate comment...a father catches his son kissing a girl-in-disguise stable hand. When he gets scolded, the son flippantly remarks, in another scene, to the girl, "I think he was just relieved you were a girl." Now, I really did NOT want to have that suggestion put into my head, and it would probably have not even occurred to a father in the 1920s.

3.5 ⭐️ an entertaining read. I DID like the O’Leary family very much! The spiritual side was a little confusing—I read the third book first so may go back and read the others—part way through I had the impression they might be catholic. There is a good bit about prayer and even Bible reading however, so I wasn’t sure where they stood.

Irish meadows was a lovely place to visit through a book. The author did a fantastic job taking us there. The romance was sweet, and my heart broke for Matthew as he had faced so much pain (and ptsd essentially.)

There’s also a side story about The leading lady’s brother. I did enjoy that, but it seemed slightly disconnected from the main plot (and made me think I needed to read the first two books first!).

My complaint—one exclamation was border line profanity. I was taken back because it didn’t fit the character and is inappropriate in any Christian fiction. It would be a stretch to say he was praying in that moment. I’m not sure exactly what the author was thinking there. And that bothered me. But I didn’t see anything else like that in the rest of the story.

Overall, I enjoyed the book. The epilogue was fantastic.

Have you ever read a story that you wanted to read as slow as possible to savor every word? I felt that way with this story. I absolutely loved the story of Deirdre and Matthew. I will miss the O’Leary family, but the ending was pretty satisfying. I highly recommend this book! (Full review at my website)

Love's Faithful Promise by Susan Anne Mason is a wonderful historical romance set in 1922. It is the third book in the Courage To Dream series but can be read as a stand-alone.
I just adored the book. It was a book that just oozed with warmth, family and the presence of God. God's hand could clearly be seen when viewing the past from a point in the future. Although at the time He was not always visible. "If the woman wanted to waste her time praying, he wouldn't stop her."
Matthew fought in World War I. He saw many horrors. He failed to see God. "Where was God when thousands of men died in that infernal war?" War fractured relationships with God.
On the other hand Deirdre and her family have a firm relationship with God. "We can't give up. We have God on our side." Knowing God means they can experience peace in all situations and circumstances.
Prayer is of vital importance. Both Deirdre and Matthew are in the medical profession. Deirdre believes "All healing should begin with prayer." Whilst doctors and nurses have knowledge and skills, their work is best seen in partnership with God. "A doctor is the instrument of God's healing power.
Similarly God is seen as the third person in a marriage as a chord of three strands is not easily broken.
There is the theme of guilt. Guilt weighs heavy, especially when one tries to fix everything oneself and takes on God's job. God's gift of grace can be forgotten. "It would take God's healing grace to set him free from a prison of his own making." One needs to accept grace and let go of our burdens. "Perhaps now he could learn to forgive himself."
There are some delightful children in the novel. Their tenderness and love of life are infectious. There are also a few scrapes which has the reader holding their breath. Children are a gift from God and as such are portrayed in the novel.
There is the theme of taking care of the widows and orphans too. No-one is beyond the care of God. He sees all. The novel has several characters who spot the lost and the vulnerable and help with their healing. Not all healing is physical, some is mental.
There are several romances bubbling away beneath the surface. It is a joy to watch them unfold.
I absolutely loved Love's Faithful Promise. It was my first novel by Susan Anne Mason but I want more, more, more. I feel quite lost now the novel is ended.
A wonderful read.
I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.

There is something bittersweet in saying goodbye to characters I have read about for multiple books, especially when it is a family saga and it continues to follow those from previous novels. But Love’s Faithful Promise is a fully satisfying conclusion to the Courage to Dream series, giving a fond send off to the O’Leary family that has found a place both in my heart and on my forever bookshelves.

This book follows twins Connor and Deirdre, and as with previous installments in the series, we get two wonderful romances in one. I enjoyed following both storylines, and the love interests were different yet spirited in both cases—there are no wilting flowers in the O’Leary clan it seems, whether born into it or joining it by marriage!

Dreams for the future play a large part in this plot in many different situations. What do we give up to pursue them? Is anything more important than them? Do they change over time? What happens when our dreams collide with a loved one’s hope for their future? I appreciate how Mason is unafraid to place her characters in difficult situations and write realistic passages that don’t resort to clichéd answers, yet still find good and hopeful solutions that fit with the characters and storyline she has created.

Faith doesn’t always come easy for everyone, either, especially in a world with tragic history from both the battlefield and at home. Again, the author deftly avoids pat answers and allows us to watch the characters struggle with questions and emotions that aren’t pretty, but they, and the reader, can come through the doubts stronger for facing them.

This conclusion has left me smiling, appreciating the legacy a family can leave behind—in this case a beautiful tribute to faith and family. Readers who enjoy historical romance, especially family sagas, will not want to miss any of the books in this series. I highly recommend it for high school readers on up.

I received a free copy of this book from the author and publisher but no compensation for this review. I was not required to write a favorable one and the opinions expressed are both honest and my own.

This was a pretty good book. It kept me turning the pages. The story line was interesting - mostly predictable, but there were enough little twists along the way that kept me reading. Some of the things that happened were far-fetched, but it was still well written.

I was looking forward to the conclusion of this trilogy, as I loved the first two novels, Irish Meadows and A Worthy Heart.. In this one we get to see more of Connor and Deirdre, who were most often seen as little kids in the background of the earlier books. The O'Leary mother Kathleen suffers a stroke which leaves her partially paralysed, and her nursing student daughter Deirdre commits herself to helping her fully recover. She tries to enlist the help of physiotherapist Matthew Claybourne, but he has his own reasons for refusing point blank to come to Irish Meadows. Meanwhile, Connor is trying to befriend a new employee who has just been hired to work in the stables, but there is far more to this person than he guesses at first.

When you stop to think about it, this novel is brimming with literary conventions and tropes. Grim young doctor who needs to lighten up, sheltered little girl who becomes more robust with the encouragement of good friends, beautiful working woman, pretty girl masquerading as a boy, drunken old dad with a deep-seated mistrust of doctors. Even though it was predictable at times, I really enjoyed it all, which proves that these plots have stood the test of time for a good reason.

All through this trilogy, there have been two romances in each novel, one more dominant and the other more recessive. I feel it worked particularly well in this one. It might have got a bit heavy if the story focused just on Matthew and Deirdre's situation, without the run-around that Jo put Connor through. Their story was my favourite this time round, adding a bit of lightness. It definitely wouldn't have been the same without them. Jo was a spirited heroine who can give men a run for their money, and Connor was a perfect gentleman.

Deirdre's take on whether or not a person should give up on their dreams appealed to me. No doubt we've all seen it presented in an either/or sort of manner. You either go wholeheartedly for your dreams or forget about them. She simply sums up her opinion with two words. 'Dreams change.' It makes sense. A person is a changing entity, always learning and in flux. A single dream isn't necessarily meant to carry us through all our lives, exactly as we conceived it before circumstances made us grow. The story may help some of us shake off a bit of rigidity.

Also, her dilemma in this novel raises the question of whether it's the right thing to try to help and touch as many people as you possibly can, or focus most of your attention on only one or two. Depending on the individual, there's no right answer, and sometimes the best move may be to simply slow down and focus on just a couple of others who need you most.

There's a bit of trickery and truth stretching in this book, all for very good reasons. Some of it is upfront from the start, such as the trick Jo is playing on Connor, and others take us by surprise down the track.

On a personal note, I was interested to see that Brianna, who struggled so hard for her university education in Irish Meadows, settled happily down as a homeschooling mother. That looked familiar, even though her style doesn't look quite the same as mine. I think Bree's style comes across as the sort we all imagine at the outset, with good-natured, happy children, who are interested in the subject matter, sitting around the table with no resistance.

I think the first two books in the trilogy are my favourites, but having read all three now, it was time well spent. Of the six romances presented, I think my favourite heroes were the O'Leary boys, Adam and Connor, and of course the charming Rylan Montgomery, who never achieved his dream of becoming a Catholic priest. Through all three books, the stern and domineering father, James O'Leary makes his influence felt without ever really mellowing much in his approach, or does he? I love it that by the end, several of his children just shrug off his bluster, saying something like, 'Oh, I'll handle Daddy.'

Susan Ann Mason caught my interest from the very first page. Love's Faithful Promise is the third book in the Courage to Dream series. I have now read all three books, and loved them all. That being said you can totally enjoy any of the books as a stand alone as well. Each book also has a smaller love story mixed in, so it's like two for the price of one. This story is set in 1922 and mostly takes place at Irish Meadows. Irish Meadows is a place where family comes first, and the love they have for each other is undeniable. I love seeing the family dynamic, and can almost picture myself as part of their family. This story follows Deidre and Matthew as they struggle to find out what their future is supposed to look like.

Deidre O'Leary has a big family. When she receives word that her mother is at the hospital, she knows she must put her schooling on hold and do anything she can to help this amazing woman. Being a nurse has its advantages and her medical training is a huge asset. As soon as the O'Leary family hears about a doctor who specializes in physical therapy they know they need to get him to Irish Meadows. With her medical knowledge and persuasive personality Deidre is the perfect choice to convince him to come. Little does she know, Matthew Claybourne isn't so easily persuaded. Can she convince the stubborn doctor to help?

Matthew has worked hard to get where he is. Helping the soldiers that came back wounded gives his life purpose. His beautiful daughter Phoebe is fragile, and the last thing he wants to do is take her away from everything she's known and stay in the countryside. But when her doctor suggests just that, Matthew feels he has little choice. When they arrive at Irish Meadows he worries that it will all be too overwhelming for his daughter, but soon learns that country life isn't so bad. There are dangers everywhere, but there is also beauty and fresh air. Can Matthew really help the O'Leary family?

This was so much fun to read! Mason surprised me with several twist and turns. I really enjoyed the mixture of romance, with the perfect dash of suspense here and there. I loved getting to know the family better and meeting the new additions. This book was a great way to end the series. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Historical Fiction. I received a copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for my honest opinion. All opinions expressed are my own.

Utterly Captivating!

Long Island - 1922
Once again, author Susan Anne Mason sweeps the reader away on a heartwarming, but angsty journey to the lovely, affluent estate of Irish Meadows—surrounded with lush grass-covered paddocks, magnificent stables, and the spirited O'Leary clan.

When the captivating Deirdre O'Leary arrives in Toronto requesting that widower Dr. Matthew Clayborne return with her to Irish Meadows to help her ailing mother, she is met with much resistance on the part of the handsome, but surly doctor. Dedicated to helping wounded soldiers and his four-year-old daughter, Phoebe, are his top priorities. However, when his daughter suffers a health scare, Deirdre makes Matthew an offer he cannot refuse—a respite for Phoebe to the fresh air of Irish Meadows—in exchange for his assistance with Mrs. O'Leary.

As Phoebe begins to flourish amidst the rambunctious O'Leary's and the peaceful atmosphere of Irish Meadows, Matthew finds himself drawn to them as well...especially to the intriguing Deirdre. But he finds himself in a quandary for he has no intentions of leaving his patients and home in Canada, and Deirdre has sworn off marriage to pursue her career. But what of those compassionate, sparkling green eyes that haunt his dreams?...and of her growing attraction to this gentle man who brings tears to those viridescent eyes at the very thought of his leaving?

Christy Award winner, Susan Ann Mason, has swiftly made it into the top ten of my fave authors with her wonderful Courage to Dream series! Her prowess at telling a realistic story containing unpredictable, angst-filled situations and exhilarating, capricious characters is second to none...and you just can't beat two steamy romances for the price of one! Warning: Be sure to keep a fan and tissues handy for aforementioned love scenes. lol Love's Faithful Promise is a soul-stirring, mesmerizing novel that will stay with you long after that last sigh-worthy page is turned.

When I began reading this book, I felt like I was becoming acquainted with the friend of a friend and we were hitting it off like gangbusters, with good reason--I'd already read a book in Susan Anne Mason's Courage to Dream series.

The new heroine is Deirdre--a medical student who is called home because her mother had a stroke. Since Kathleen suffered partial paralysis and was not progressing in her healing as fast as she should. James, her father, remembers that there is a doctor in Toronto who has had success with physical therapy in wounded soldiers returning from World War I. He asks Deirdre to go to Toronto to see if he will come to take care of Kathleen. When the doctor's daughter, Phoebe, has a serious episode with her lungs, the decision is made for him to come to the family farm on Long Island. Phoebe blossoms under Deirdre's caring and even begins talking again.

In a second plot, Collin is working with the horses on the farm and hires a young "man," Joe, to help in the stables. When the crankiest horse begins responding to Joe, Collin sees that Joe has something special. It's a while before he realizes that Joe is really Josephine.

I loved Irish Meadows and I loved Love's Faithful Promise. The quality of writing and the character development are spot on. The plot pacing is exquisite, and the drama included in the plot is prime. Five Stars, Two Thumbs Up, and physical therapy to cure your pains.

My thanks to Bethany House Publishing for allowing me to read and review this book.

"Perhaps coming to Irish Meadows hadn't been a mistake after all."

Deirdre O'Leary is determined to convince Dr. Matthew Clayborne, renowned for his progressive approach to physical therapy, that he must travel back to Irish Meadows and coax her mother back to full health after Kathleen's nearly paralyzing stroke. Postponing her own aspiring medical career, travelling from Long Island to Toronto, Canada in order to meet with Dr. Clayborne face-to-face, Deirdre matches the dour doctor's excuses with every tool of persuasion in her arsenal, but in the end, the decision hinges on improving the health of the doctor's young daughter, Phoebe.

Matthew Clayborne does not intend to disrupt his life simply to appease a wealthy New Yorker with a sick wife; his patients, mostly veterans of war, are more important to him. After facing off with the fiery, but quite beautiful, Deirdre, Matthew reluctantly makes arrangements to privately treat Mrs. O'Leary, on the condition that the therapy will be on a trial basis. He fully intends to return to Toronto, putting Irish Meadows and Deirdre O'Leary's dazzling smile and compassionate heart completely out of his mind. But there is more than one person on Long Island who desperately needs to feel the touch of God's merciful healing hand, and it isn't Kathleen O'Leary.

Susan Anne Mason has written a beautiful conclusion to her three book series, not only penning a breath-holding romance between Deirdre and Matthew, but including a clever parallel story surrounding Connor O' Leary and his own unexpected rodeo of love.

I love these books! Mason does an amazing job of portraying realistic characters with believable struggles. And where most authors lose steam the farther they get in the series, Mason's books have instead gotten better with each one. I am so sad to see this series end and really hope that she decides to write another series for these characters' children.

Truly, the only thing I think could have been done better was Connor and Jo's story. Unlike in the previous two books, where both couples received nearly equal attention and page space, Connor and Jo were maybe a fourth of this story. While I had been immediately interested the moment their POVs came into the picture, I still felt that there was more that could have happened with them. Matthew and Deirde's story was fully engaging, but I ended the book feeling like I barely knew Connor and Jo.

Everything about this book is interesting and though I wish there had been more of the one story line, both were still engaging. The book presents a number of questions that are still applicable today and will most likely touch close to home with many readers, especially those who have ever questioned whether or not they should balance both a career and a family. I highly recommend this series and look forward to anything else this author may write.

I provided an honest review of this book after having received a free copy from the publisher.

My personal favourite in this family saga!
Deidre and Matthew share a story that is sweet, and full with all the elements readers enjoy, from a love/hate to friendship to romance relationship, trials, joy, sadness, and a lot of growing in both characters' lives.
Matthew grows in faith, trust, and letting go, while Deidre discovers what is truly important and that God will give His best when we surrender our dreams to Him.
The side story in this novel felt a bit like a teen soap opera, with all the drama that began the moment young Conner and Jo met. With more time to develop (maybe their own book), the story would no doubt have been more enjoyable, but as it was, I found it somewhat juvenile and out of place. However, this did not take away from the main story and overall flow of the book, so everything wrapped up nicely in a satisfying conclusion!
I enjoyed the character of Mrs O'Leary, with her motherly schemes and wise insights, and I loved the bond between all of the sisters and sisters-in-law. Also, little Phoebe was precious.
Mason has a vivid style that captures the setting and era perfectly, and brings her characters to life, almost right off the page!

The two youngest O'Leary siblings, Deirdre and Connor, have the spotlight here in book 3. Connor has been working his way up the ranks in the family business and Deirdre is a nurse and medical student in Boston.

Deirdre is an intelligent, compassionate, and gifted healer. Deirdre won't take no for an answer from rehabilitation expert, Dr. Matthew Clayborne. She's so determined to obtain the very best care for her mama.

Matthew is stuck in the mire of fear and burying himself in his work. The pain of his past has nearly paralyzed him and keeps him from truly experiencing life.

Connor's love interest shows up in a most unexpected form and that's all I'll say about that since spoilers aren't nice. Oh, bittersweet goodness!!! I can't say enough about this wonderful family saga.

I requested the opportunity to read and review this title through NetGalley. The opinions expressed are my own.

On this amazing book, I've waited too long to write a review and therefore am no longer a qualified reviewer. Maybe if I read it again someday I'll be able to write a better one but for now ...

I loved the characters, especially Phoebe who was so cute, and Deidre was a favorite, too. The era was awesome, 1920s being one of my favorite time-periods.

The subplot with Connor was awesome, too.

Not honestly anything I can think of which I disliked. Like some fellow reviewers, I was a little surprised when Connor - caught kissing a girl dressed as a boy by his father ... long story - remarks that his dad was probably just glad she wasn't a boy. Mmkay? C'mon, Connor.

But still an amazing clean romance.

This is a Goodreads-only review.

I enjoyed this story of hope and perseverance. I liked how Deidre is making a difference by trying to make her way into a field that women didn't always have a chance in. I liked how Dr. Matthew Clayborne learns to take a different look at things that he isn't sure about when he realizes that is it making a difference.
Deirdre comes home to help care for her mother after she has a stroke. While there she butts heads with Dr. Matthew Clayborne when she wants to participate in her mother's care. He has agreed to come and care for Deidre's mother in exchange for being able to stay at her home of Irish Meadows while his daughter recovers from an illness.
I received a copy of the book from the author publisher. The review is voluntary.

This book just was not my style and I should not even review it but for my information I like to write a review of everything I read. I respect that others enjoy this style of novel. This is just my take.

I found this book to contain a simplistic and seemingly forced plot advanced by a young adult style of writing which included very stiff and unlikely dialog. Had the writing been more professional the history behind the story could have been elucidating. So many cliches.

Things that irk me for example are when authors name a brand as though it helps their story be authentic and historic. "The secretary was typing on an Underwood typewriter". This was not a detective novel and brands don't matter especially in the instance it was used...

Riveting!

Love’s Faithful Promise is Book 3 in the Courage to Dream series by Susan Anne Mason. In this novel, there are two stories presented: that of Deirdre O'Leary and Matthew Clayborn, and Connor O'Leary and Josephine Miller.

When Deirdre O'Leary's mother has a stroke, she is driven to find the best help for her mother. A nurse aspiring to become a doctor in the early 20th Century, Deirdre knows that her mother needs the best of help for her recovery. Deirdre takes on the task of traveling to Canada to convince widowed Doctor Matthew Clayborn to help her mother.

Matthew Clayborn is a widowed father to a young daughter. His loveless marriage left him with feeling like a failure. Driven to his work and taking care of his daughter, nothing else is important to Matthew.

When Deirdre asks for his help, Matthew turns her down. However, when his own daughter has a need presenting itself, Matthew accepts the challenge. He travels along with his daughter to the farm where the O'Learys live to help his daughter and Deirdre's mother.

Josephine Miller arrives at the farm disguised as a farm hand. Her family situation is poor--her father an alcoholic. When Connor finds out the truth, he does everything that he can to try to make the situation better.

I haven't read the other two books in this series, but after reading Love's Faithful Promise, I'm going to have to buy the other two. Additionally, though, I'll inform you that this is a stand-alone novel. You can understand what is going on without having read the other two novels in the series.

Susan's writing is wonderful, and I was very disappointed when the story came to an end. Character development is fantastic, and the scenes and situations are entertaining and creative. If you enjoy Christian historical fiction, give Love's Faithful Promise your time!

"She longed to ease his pain. To hold him until he let go of everything keeping him from fully embracing life. But only a higher power could make that happen. It would take God’s healing grace to set Matthew free from a prison of his own making."

SEPTEMBER 1922
NEW YORK CITY
Matthew Clayborne: Rehabilitation doctor for injured soldiers
Deirdre O’Leary: Youngest of James and Kathleen's daughters
Phoebe Clayborne: Matthew's four-year-old daughter
James and Kathleen O’Leary: Father and mother of the O’Leary family
Connor O’Leary: Youngest O’Leary son, training a badly spooked racehorse
Jo Miller: Newest "stable hand", acting as a man to get the job
Seth Miller: Jo's brother

Deirdre O’Leary was called home from her medical studies to take care of her mother. Kathleen suffered a stroke and was in need of more care than anyone else in the family could provide. But when a specialist was clearly needed, a friend of the family's suggested a doctor under him named Matthew Clayborne.

Not only was Matthew dedicated to recovering wounded soldiers, but his daughter's health was compromised. To uproot both of them seemed illogical, but in the end the fresh air of Irish Meadows won out.

The two main stories were of Deirdre and Matthew, and Connor and Jo. Complication upon complication in these relationships added so much depth to these stories.

Again, as in book two of this series, Susan Anne Mason includes such deep faith in each storyline. I loved that when there was a crisis, the family gathered together to pray. I loved how Deirdre was constantly encouraging Matthew to pray, trusting that God could answer his prayer and make things right. I loved Matthew's integrity and Deirdre’s persistence. Such an amazing couple.

Good book, I’m just sad the series is over. I’d enjoy seeing the O’Leary family in other books by this author.

Susan Anne Mason concludes her Courage to Dream series with a novel about the two youngest members of the O’Leary family. Eight years have passed since the events of the previous book and Connor and Deidre are all grown up. This was a bit of a stunner for me who remembered Deidre as a little girl hugging her older sisters. Now, she looks on enviously as those sisters enjoy family life while she intends be a doctor. She’s already a nurse and therefore she’s the one to assist when her mother has a stroke. It’s also the reason she’s sent to Toronto to persuade Matthew Claybourne to come to the USA to treat her mother.

Meanwhile at home, her brother has been tasked with bringing a race horse back from injury. It seems an impossible task until a new stable hand going by the name of Joe displays skills worthy of a horse whisperer. But something doesn’t seem quite right about Joe and Connor is determined to learn the truth about his new employee.

This was a pleasant read focusing on life after World War I. Matthew is a physical therapy specialist, a discipline still in its early days at this time. It’s an element I found interesting because my husband is a physical therapist. The characters are appealing and sympathetic and the story of Matthew’s daughter tugs at the heartstrings.

Although Love’s Faithful Promise is the third title of a series, I think it can be enjoyed without having read the other two books first. I do recommend reading them, however, to better appreciate the family dynamics. Throughout the series, for example, we see the gradual transformation of the family patriarch James O’Leary. It’s fitting that the series should end on a scene with him thinking back on the past and also looking to the future.

Thank you to Bethany House for my complimentary electronic advance copy of Love’s Faithful Promise.
