The Shadow Out of Time manga adaptation vol. 1 by Tanabe Gou

If you are already familiar with the story of The Shadow Out of Time by H. P. Lovecraft, then you will probably find this magna adaptation is very faithful to the origin.

The artwork is exquisite, with great details and linework, manga-ka Tanabe Gou is a terrific artist and he got the Lovecraftian mood of doom, mystery and dread perfectly. The artwork really is something...!!! Although it's a bit disappointing when the cover art is only an recreation of the original cover art for the short story when it was first published!

Updated@05/11/2023:

Okay so I read the manga adaptation again and will re-read it later this Christmas.

Updated@26/02/2022:

I guess the reason why Lovecraft is so intriguing and up-to-date/timeless is that he just pointblank tell you humanity is doomed and the future is hopeless.

Give the current state the world is in, I can only say he is right.

Tanabe Gou continues to prove that he’s one of the best at visually translating Lovecraft’s strange, cosmic terrors into manga. Volume 1 of The Shadow Out of Time sets up the eerie premise: a professor who suddenly loses years of his life, only to suspect that something else has been inhabiting his body. The story unfolds with that signature Lovecraftian dread, and Tanabe’s art is a perfect companion—his paneling makes even the quiet, academic moments feel suffused with unease.

I loved how the pacing balances between the “real” world of the professor’s fragmented memory and the looming sense that something alien is just out of frame. Tanabe doesn’t rush; he lets the mystery simmer. The art of the professor’s haunted expressions and the oppressive darkness in lecture halls and libraries really drew me in.

That said, it is a slow burn—readers looking for immediate monsters or action might find this volume a little too restrained. But if you enjoy the creeping paranoia and atmospheric build-up that makes Lovecraft work, this is a fantastic start.

A strong, unsettling introduction to what I expect will be a very chilling adaptation. Can’t wait for Volume 2.
