What story do you want to walk around in? What compass do you need for your journey? To author Callie Feyen, clothes have always been part of finding and making her personal story. They’ve been a guide and an invitation. Whatever your personal style, Feyen’s multi-layered coming of age tale—which masterfully weaves timeless stories, writing, and clothes—will make you laugh, catch your breath, even cry. Then she’ll inspire you to decide who you want to be… and go for it. Try. You can always pick a new outfit—and find a new way, over time.
This book is about more than clothes and stories; it’s about becoming, about learning, about changing your mind, about taking risks. Through beautiful prose and engaging narrative, Callie walks us through a life, a wardrobe, and so much more. At the end of the book, I found myself viewing my clothes in a whole new light, feeling extra appreciative of every good teacher I’ve had, and wanting to sit down and write some of my own stories out on paper, as Callie has so thoughtfully modeled for us in Twirl.
This was another freebie from Amazon for Kindle. Because of the shoe on the front, I thought it was a memoir of clothes in a woman's life. It is, but the books, stories and teaching take up far more of the content. I think if another title were picked dealing with books, more readers on Goodreads would have picked it up.
I've started giving memoirs 3 stars. The writing here is fine, content good, but I really feel it's not up to me to judge a person's life. There's much to be said about our education system in the US and this doesn't hold out hope for the teachers fighting the good fight.
I just finished reading My Mrs. Brown which is about an older woman saving up for an Oscar de la Renta dress. Here a young girl buys orange heels at Target and wants a summer job at the Gap. Makes you realize as we age (and get more money) how our tastes change. One thing we can all reminisce about though--the time we wore new shoes somehere that made our dogs bark.
I love Callie's writing, and Twirl did not disappoint. Her descriptions capture your attention as she reads between the lines of her daily life, searching for the stories that will give structure and purpose. Callie writes like no one else I know, digging through her own past like an archeologist, examining her present like a detective, confident that if she can pay attention hard enough and tell the story well enough (she can) it will make all the difference in the world to herself as well as to her readers (it does).
Callie Feyen works masterfully with metaphor and storytelling to tell her own story of finding, and losing, and finding herself again. She weaves into the fabric of her life’s story the clothes she loves and doesn’t love, and they are all about expressing who she is. I’m so glad she found her story, and then shared it with us!
I love Callie's beautiful words and stories. Her quick chapters pack a big punch and left me warm and smiling. I am a better writer when I read her writing.
Loved everything about this book and will re read again. I didn't realize that someone noticed, loved and experienced so many things similar to me. Very special.
I ADORED this book. Clothing and shoes and growing our identities...just lovely all around. Funny, witty, smart and poignant at times, this books is like a balm to the soul. We survived. And we have great shoes to show for it. Finished it in 2 days and wished I had taken longer to savor it. Will read again.
Callie Feyen is a master storytellers has a magical way of pulling the reader into her stories while leaving a crack.open for the reader to create their own story.
