I did something different than normal when reading this book...I started with book #4 in the series instead of the beginning of the series. Silly me! If you were to know me, you'd know that I am a very sequential person and love to start at the beginning. I have been known a time or two to veer from my normal routine but I really love knowing all the background and little bits and pieces of a story/characters to build upon and create the whole picture. But this cover caught my eye and the title and synopsis, so I went for it. And I really enjoyed it!
I listened to the audiobook of Saved by Grace. The narrator's voice took me a little bit to get used to but it didn't take long and I was immersed in the story.
Natalie Oleson and Cody Hammond are the two main characters. They have some broken pieces to their lives. Some physical and some emotional/mental. But they're strong. They're continuing to push forward and find a way to keep working and living. Albeit, one of them is a little stubborn in finding joy, but in the end joy and peace come.
Natalie is trying to hold everything together for her family and struggling. When she meets Cody, she finds a way to help serve somebody outside of her family. He of course resists...but not for long. He can't help but feel of Natalie's goodness and beauty (inside and out). They come to work together and become friends and finally start to find healing.
I really enjoyed listening to Natalie's continued gentle attempts to help Cody. Watching his barriers and walls start to crumble and allow him to feel hope and love again was very sweet. This book piqued my interest for what the previous books in the Belle Fourche series are about. Especially since those characters were in a part of this story.
If you're looking for a book with pain and grief to hope and healing, this is a good one. Sweet and fun, with a few little mishaps here and there as well as loss, sorrow, love, and peace.
Content: Clean. Some mild moments of peril and death. This is a Christian fiction story, the characters talk about hope and healing and going to church. But it is not preachy (for those who don't prefer reading that) and well written.
I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
Saved by Grace is another sweet, Christian romance from Kari Trumbo. The blurb has the plot. Natalie , Cody and the other characters are well developed and believable. This is a romance of opposites attract. Ms. Trumbo's books are always well written. The plot is well developed. Both Cody and Natalie have to relearn trust, grow in faith and finally heal from past hurts. I highly recommend this book.
This is my fourth visit to Belle Fourche and I find every visit just as enjoyable as the one before. I have greatly enjoyed reading this series of stories from author Kari Trumbo. This time I enjoyed listening to the audiobook. I quickly found myself talking to the characters as if they could hear me.
When I first started this story I found Cody Hammond a grumpy, man. One that seemed happier left alone to his own devices, and I was quite happy to just leave him alone. However, the more I read and got to know the “real” Cody Hammond I grew to understand him and before long found myself cheering for him! He fits the description of a misunderstood hero to a T.
I just wanted to hug sweet Natalie and tell her that everything would work out okay. She has such a big heart. She longs to help her father and wants to do what is right by her unruly brothers. Then she meets Cody. True to her big-hearted nature, she takes him under her wing.
These characters are sure to bring a smile to your face and warm your heart in the most unassuming ways. While you can read this story as a stand-alone, there are characters from previous stories that have minor roles. I would recommend reading previous stories because they are all just so very enjoyable!
(I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher. I am not required to write a positive review. My thoughts and opinions are my own.)
Cody Hammond had some trials and tribulations in his life. A rough childhood when his parents split, going into the service and losing a leg. Getting sent to a home from which he had to escape. Then travelling from England by himself being an amputee with only 1 leg. He had to overcome some serious obstacles and his attitude in life reflects the aftermath of those trials. When he comes to Belle Fourche, South Dakota and begins work at a bank he meets Natalie Oleson. Natalie has arrived in town with her sick father and her non-compliant brothers. She has a lot of burden on her shoulders but remains a kind and caring person. This is a well written, clean romance about two people who deserve to be unburdened by their pasts and move on together for a better future.
Each book is written as a standalone, but the cross-references to the shared universe and characters, while explained within, mean you'll enjoy each the more for having read its predecessor. This tale focuses on Ann's brother Cody, he of the missing limb, and some hitherto unknown cousins of the Olsons. Post Civil War advances in replacement limb technology were necessitated by the number of men who'd survived their wounds because amputation had halted gangrene. But could a false leg do more than fill Cody's empty pants leg? The female Olson cousin wants to help by making him that prosthesis. I especially liked the introduction of technical advancements as a key to unlocking the character of painfully shy Natalie. As always, narrator J. Scott Bennett's interpretations added to my enjoyment of the story.
Natalie Oleson, her brothers, and father traveled to Belle Fourche to mend the rift between her father and his brother Nathan before her father dies and so that his children can be with family after spending his life traveling to make wooden limbs for those who needed them. Banker Cody Hammond lost his leg in an English war. But he’s lost more than that. His fighting parents forced him to go away to war and put him in an abysmal asylum when he returned. He has seen so little kindness that he is surly to scare people away. Natalie thinks helping him will give her father a reason to fight to live. She never expected to lose her heart. This was another wonderfully stirring romance by Kari with broken characters that help each other heal.
Saved by Grace is another well-written, clean, historical romance by Kari Trumbo. Natalie and Cody seem total opposites, but need each other. They are both well-developed characters that I grew to love. The plot is interesting and moves at a good pace. I enjoy Ms. Trumbo's use of dialogue. Cody to his boss, "I thought you wanted me to be more friendly." To which Langerford replies, "More friendly than a grizzly with cubs, yes. As friendly as a puppy, no." She creates such pictures with her writing! I highly recommend this book. I received an ARC. I chose to write a review and share my opinion.
I am really enjoying reading this series. The characters are all so well-developed and the writing is captivating and heartfelt. In this story, Cody, the brother of Eli's wife Anne, is moody and gruff and just a little on the caustic side. But we know why he's like that, and as his story progresses we see him reconcile himself to some misconceptions and allow himself to consider a different life than he previously could.
Natalie Oleson lands on her uncle's ranch with her dying father and three unruly brothers. Still reeling from her mother's death a decade before, she's not ready to lose her father and the life he's provided for her. She's drawn to Cody for more than just the opportunity to reinvigorate her father with a new assignment, but she doesn't quite know what to do with Cody's anger and ambivalence.
This is a true slow-burn romance, one that requires both MCs to reassess their plans for the future as well as develop their faith and ability to trust. It's a beautiful story, well-told and full of faith and family values. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
I've enjoyed all the previous three books in this series and this has proved to be excellent as well. This time it is Natalie and Cody's story, she arrives to find sanctuary for her sick father and her brothers with her uncle. Cody works in the local bank where he struggles to keep civil to everyone, ever mindful of his injury. Kari has worked her normal magic, making characters and situations come to life. Highly recommended
This is the first book that I have read in this particular series and it was a good story with enough happening to keep me interested and turning the pages. Being new I had no background of the town or the family dynamics of the Oleson family, but I didn't feel lost or question anything that happened. Great characters with LOTS OF DIFFERING personalities! A very clean, sweet read and I would recommend this series to readers of most ages.
I did receive an ARC copy of this book. This is my voluntary review with my honest personal thoughts and opinions. Vicki from Wyoming
Saved By Grace is a great story with many wonderful characters. I love reading stories that the character are part of bigger families who all come together to help and freely give to each other. The friendship between Cody and Natalie was one of trust and sharing stories of hurt and pain. Kari Trumbo writes another great book that touches the heart and draws you into the story. I can’t wait for her next book! Was given a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
Cody is bitter about the blows that life has dealt him. Cody's curiosity about why Natalie is in town eases a little of his bitterness. Even though Natalie is bringing her father home to die, she still is in denial. If Natalie can perk her father's interest in helping Cody, Natalie believes it will give her father the will to live. As Cody gets to know Natalie, it brings them closer together as they help each other. I received a free copy of this book from the author. This is my honest and voluntarily given review. This is a wonderful enjoyable Christian historical romance. I would give this a 4+ rating. Natalie and Cody are very real believable characters. This was a very fast read for me because I couldn't wait to see what happened to the characters. I recommend this book and the series.
Finally a new book in the Brothers of Belle Fourche series! This new addition to the series was definitely worth the wait! All books in the series can be read as a standalone, although I recommend to read them all because they are simply awesome!
Saved by Grace tells the story of Cody Hammond and Natalie Oleson. Throughout the book, we learn in bits and pieces about the past of Cody, and I kept hoping to get to know more on his past, so that I might understand him better. As for Natalie, you'll find yourselve hoping that her plan for both her father and Cody will succeed. The romance between Cody and Natalie is slow, which makes it realistic. Cody's past has made him bitter and that takes patience and grace from Natalie. She makes the title come alive as she shows Cody what grace really is. This story will absolutely tug on your heartstrings.
This unbelievably heartfelt and beautiful story filled with faith based moments between the characters was brilliantly written and so lovingly crafted by the author. Two young people who both were facing issues of loneliness, hurt and not being able to relate to each other because of their struggles soon find themselves thrown together by circumstances. A wonderful experience in reading!
This book was so good! It is very well written and holds your attention from beginning until the end. You don't want to miss this one, grab your copy today!
Natalie always wants to help people. Together with her father she makes new arms and legs for the people who needs them. Then there is Cody who is missing a big part of his leg. Most of his life he’s been miserable and angry. He don’t know how to be kind but Natalie just wants to help him. How these two people connect and make each other lives better you have to read for yourself. I really enjoyed reading this book. The slow buildup of their relationship was entertaining to follow.
I enjoyed this story about two people who seemed so different, but drawn to each other. I also enjoyed that it has no graphic descriptions nor crude language, and is refillable read. I recommend it to any.
Saved By Grace is a sweet historical romance in the Brothers of Belle Fourche series by Kari Trumbo. Having listened to the other books in the collection I was anxious for this fourth one and was not disappointed. The author has captured well the era of the setting (1900, South Dakota) and the emotions and actions of her characters. They are realistic and relatable and I was drawn quickly into their story and enjoyed watching the romance between Natalie and Cody develop. Natalie, a determined and caring young woman and Cody, a banker who definitely has some bitterness and frustrations with things in his past that effect his present. Will they be able to move through their struggles to have a future together? It was interesting to read about the use of prosthetics during this period of history. Although fourth in the series, it is easily a stand-alone story but I'd recommend reading the first three books as well. It is interesting to see the characters from the previous books and what has been happening with them. Readers of historical romance books will not want to miss this one. I listened to a complimentary copy of the audiobook and was not required to write a review and the opinions are my own. The narrator, J. Scott Bennett did a great job telling Natalie and Cody's story which made for an enjoyable listening experience. I am so glad there are more books in this series as I look forward to reading more about the brothers of Belle Fourche and the women they come to love.
There are authors I turn to that reset my mind, and Kari Trumbo is one of them. She always writes a beautiful story, and Saved by Grace is wonderful. Grace, her father and brothers come to Belle Fourche to mend a rift with her uncle. Her father is ill, and he is hoping to find a place where his children can flourish. Grace meets Cody, a disgruntled, unhappy man from England who has lost part of his leg. With her skills in prosthetic building, she is immediately drawn to help him. But is it just his leg she wants to help his with? Trumbo continues to let us join in the community at Belle Fourche, know it's people and feel comfort and love. Her characters of Grace and Cody have so many traits we all deal with. Grace is loving, responsible and trying to find her place in a new situation. Cody is cranky, frustrated and unwilling to bend. Together, will they find their new normal? Love this addition to the series, loved that Grace was persistent and did the job a man would normally do, and loved their growing faith.
J Scott Bennett continues to bring this series to life with his comforting narration. He has a calming effect when he tells a story, brings each character their own nature and lets us live it right along with them. He is the perfect fit for this series, and I have enjoyed each one of his performances.
An enterprising spinster meets a curmudgeon Englishman on the prairie
Natalie, a caretaker for her Dad, is a strong enterprising woman who, at 28, has come to terms with the truth; she was a spinster. For years she, her father, and brothers had been drifting from place to place selling medical items. Her sick father demands they go to his brother's ranch in South Dakota to settle. Cody is a young curmudgeon. Hard to like, he only sees people in negative. He'd rather be left alone, even from his kind sister Anne. He despises the sympathetic glances strangers gave, but his war injury is too major to hide. Knowing he would be promoted at the bank if he could just be a bit more friendly and approachable, he starts to see himself as others do. As Natalie's he brothers are occupied with paying jobs as cowboys, she finds her value as a brave traveler and artisan greatly diminished. Her only value seems to be in the sweet concern and care she gave her father. But, life changes quickly sometimes and Cody finds himself face to face with a beauty who won't take his negativity. Can butting heads come to an agreeable truce? Can her brothers adapt to their new lifestyle? And how can a guy accept the likelihood of remaining bachelors in a land of very few available women? The answers and more are within the pages of this book.
Saved by Grace (Brothers of Belle Fourche #4) was a great read by Kari Trumbo. Cody and Natalie are complete opposites. Natalie arrived in Belle Fourche with her sick father and three brothers. She finds herself at the mercy of her only remaining family, the Olesons. She is excited to meet an ornery man with a missing leg. She hopes that he'll let her father make him him a prosthetic limb. Unfortunately it isn't easy to get Cody to agree to anything. Cody lives a quiet and ordered life, until the day Natalie rushes into the bank he works at. I really enjoyed reading their story and can't wait to read more by the author.
Have been enjoying this whole Brothers of Belle Fourche series, and was thrilled to find Anne's disabled brother, Cody, gets his own happy ending in Saved by Grace by Kari Trumbo. Genius plotline to have an angry, wounded embittered man missing a leg fall in love with Natalie, a woman who's family designs and builds prosthetic devices! This book is well written and perfectly paced and has all the things you want in a storyline. Bringing all the cousins ( Natalie and her 3 brothers) back to the ranch, creates more brothers for this series and I can't wait to get to the next one. Thank you so much for this enjoyable read.
When Natalie and her father arrive in town, her father can barely hold himself up in the wagon seat. He keeps talking to her about his death, but she can't beat to hear it. Cody has been in town for a while. He works at the bank, lives at the boarding house, and lives a very solitary life. Since his time in the British army, his life has changed forever. You won't want to miss this bittersweet book with its beautiful characters. At times, the action seems to drag, but it still deserves a read.
APart of a series and if you can read them in order you get backstories of the minor characters and understand and know them. So you don’t have to read in order you won’t be lost.
A woman dealing with her dad being very sick and the reality of not having not belonging if she doesn’t have him to care for.
A young man dealing with a missing limb and trying to fit in to a world where it’s hard for a man missing a limb.
The author does a great job with dealing with belonging, being loved, mourning, and life. You won’t regret reading (or listening) as I did
This is a really great love story, beautifully written by Kari Trumbo as a stand-alone with wonderful and very believable characters and of course, a happily ever-after. In addition, J. Scott Bennett has narrated the audiobook and he makes each character come alive with his interested voices which make the book a pleasure to listen to. I requested a copy and listened to the audio version and my voluntary and unbiased review is above.
