On the road down under, the seventeen-year-old Warners find a mystery to solve, but they aren’t sleuths. When there is no one to answer their questions, they dig deeply to learn the truth. When nothing is as it seems, everything is as it should be. Can the twins pull the veil aside and see what lies beneath? Ghosts of the evil, spirits of the forlorn, and the paranormal unknown. No challenge is too great when the twins apply science and sound reasoning to their study of human nature. The answers aren’t always what they expect. Join Grace and Henry Warner on their journey through a life of travel and mystery with parents who believe in them, as long as they aren’t completely sure what the twins are up to.
A fun, quick read and introduction to the "Monster Case Files" cast. I really enjoyed the historical aspect of this short story based around Adelaide's (Australia) old decommissioned gaol, although, as an Australian, I should point out it's not the most haunted in the land. The series is aimed at the YA audience but I can't see teenagers having much interest in this and would recommend it as a late primary school, early secondary school read. (Grades 5-7, I'm not sure what that would be elsewhere) While the premise of the characters was interesting the execution was ... um .... a little cheesy. I'm hoping the author's manage to fix this in the following longer books because there's enough there for me to read the next book in the series.
Investigating Hauntings Down Under This is a very short tale which introduces a new series about ghosts and monsters. I did not care for the story at all. The author spends a lot of time on the 'cute' bickering between the twins, and the 'cute' loving relationship of the parents. There is also much discussion of the differing analysis of situations by the males who are legal minds and the females who are engineers. The apparition of the 'ghost' takes less than a paragraph and their investigation of it made no sense – they just come up with an answer. The series is advertised as Scooby Doo meets Nancy Drew, which I guess means the worst part of each. It is also marketed for young adults which must mean brainless in their world. I give this read poor marks for being boring when it is such a short book. It left me with no interest in reading any of this series or anything else by this author. I received this book for free and this is my honest review.
A nostalgic throwback to the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boy’s styled mysteries of my childhood. I liked the sibling interaction between Grace and Henry and the way they solve their mystery. It’s a great introduction to the cast of characters.
The hint of actual history woven through the story made for a more realistic read! Loved the illustrations woven throughout and the hint of spookiness. Definitely looking forward to the rest of the series!
This is a fun introduction to the series and the characters.
I can't wait to introduce this series to my grandchildren and we can follow the adventures together. The writing is clear and the characters are well developed. Can't wait for the next one, my grandchildren and I are going have so much fun. Thanks
This was a cute little ghostly mystery featuring a brother-sister team. This is obviously a prequel to the rest of the series, and mostly sets up the characters and their mystery-solving approach. I really liked the use of a real setting, and am interested to see where the characters go from here.
