Freddy vs. Ash

Rate this book
In a mash-up that is sure to thrill horror fans everywhere, author A. S. Eggleston pits Evil Dead hero Ash Williams against A Nightmare on Elm Street villain Freddy Krueger in an epic showdown that simply can't be missed.

Freddy vs. Ash finds Freddy Krueger in the bowels of hell, determined to escape eternal damnation once and for all. If he is to return to the land of the living, however, he must find the source of his dream the Necronomicon. An ancient book containing demon resurrection spells, burial rites, and funerary incantations, it has only been seen by one other Ash Williams.

Ash, also on the hunt for the Necronomicon, is determined to destroy the book before any more evil can escape into the world. His search takes him all the way to Springwood, Ohio, where the locals tell him of the bloody destruction that Freddy wreaked upon their children years before.

Ash soon finds the evil book, but before he can destroy it, Freddy manages to resurrect himself through Ash's own sleeping body. With Freddy now on the loose, Ash must find a way to stop him before all those around him end up dead.

If you were a horror fan in the mid two-thousands, there's a good chance you're familiar with the proposed "Freddy vs. Jason. Vs. Ash", a sequel to "Freddy Vs. Jason" that would have married together the Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday for 13th, and Evil Dead franchises, connections that had only been teased with mutual easter eggs between the three. Unfortunately, due to studios' lack of cooperation, the project never left development hell and was permanently shelved, the ideas adapted into a now-OOP comic book run.

It seems A.S. Eggleston wasn't satisfied to that end and took it upon herself the make her own sequel sans Jason. It's clearly not a very well known outing, especially being an unlicensed work; I'd only heard of it on a few random threads but I knew I had to check it out.

If you're looking for a high end, sharply edited sharply edited production with compelling characters, you will be disappointed. The original characters are thin, there's at least one spelling error on every single page, and it runs about 100 pages too long. However, if you're looking for levity, gore, and good laughs, this is the place to be. In her author bio, Eggleston notes that she's a big fan of horror and it truly shows. She absolutely nails the characterization of Freddy and Ash, especially Ash - there were so many quips and character beats that made me either laugh or think, "Oh, yeah, that's definitely something Ash would do/say" and while the story occasionally treads water, you can predominantly see that Eggleston is having a lot of fun.

She knows her franchise history, too, with a good handful of references to the Evil Dead, Elm Street, and Friday the 13th movies sprinkled throughout. It's such a damn cool treat to see Ash living in the Elm Street house, walking through Westin Hills, and sleuthing through the Springwood power plant boiler room searching for the Necronomicon.

If there's a word to encapsulate this book I would say "fun". There's so much ridiculously entertaining action and a few genuinely creepy moments, it's hard not to like this book in spite of its various flaws. So if you're an Elm Street or Evil Dead fan, you really shouldn't miss this outing. You'll have to put up with some pretty weak OCs and rough grammar/writing, but in my opinion it's worth it because what it lacks in general composition, it makes up for in heart, which definitely earns a groovy from me.

no! No!! and just NO!!!

#1. (Some Spoiler Alert warnings!) I might be able to forgive: (page 148 eReader) he said. "I'll get a controller for you." he ran over to the television stand to get Evelyn her own controller. As Evelyn watched her boyfriend scramble to get a controller for her... (also thanks, Reviews by: Jen: rating 2 stars, for this reference).
#2. ( Some more Spoiler Alert Warnings!!) I might even be able to forgive: the 117 mistakes I found reading this books (No I am not an editor, so someone should check for themselves, this doesn't include punctuation, and spacing errors... Also there are probably errors in my review, Once again I am Not an Editor, so sorry) Example: (P. 301, Freddy vs Ash, eReader phone) The streetlamps and illuminated the sidewalks with yellow lights were now being tipped over by the filthy bastards, causing more darkness the overcome the area.
#3. (Serious Spoiler Alert Warning!!!) I Will Not, However Forgive!!!: You making Ash the main character whose name is On this book. Not once, or twice, but at least 3 times needing help to fight Freddy, as well as Not even being able to beat Freddy by his self. If this were Alien (The movie, 1979), Ripley wouldn't have Lambert save her, and kill the Alien. (Die Hard 1988) McClean doesn't have Sgt. Al Powell yell Yippee-ki-yay.... Basically if Ash wasn't going to beat, or kill Freddy and need saving more then once. Why call this Feddy vs Ash. Why not call it Freddy vs Ash, and his Groovy Friend. I get Enough of this #$% from Hollywood. I dont want this in a Book. Luckily I got this book on a free trial from Kindle Unlimited. I will not tell anyone Not to buy it, but there are some things that did not work For Me (Emphasis: For Me!!!) There are some points in this book that made me want to know what would happen next, but it wasn't written as well as other books that I have read that kept my interests. If you're looking for this as a story just to enjoy, Maybe you will enjoy it. If you are looking for a true Freddy vs Ash story. I would say, No!!! Emphasis on No!!! I am not an Evil Dead expert, nor Freddy, but I have seen Enough to know that this is not it. By (IT) I mean the stuff that dreams are made of. To anyone that read this whole review. I hope it helped, again sorry for the errors.

To start, I have been a big fan of Freddy and Ash from their first movies and even the tv series. Freddy’s series ended far too soon. Now to get a chance to read Freddy Vs Ash is an 80’s kid must. I found this combination on a fluke and despite the many, many typos or missing words, the story plays out like the movies though a little darker version like Nightmare on Elmstreet one. Sure A.S Eggleston gets the humour in but it’s more about the darkness. The new cast of should we say victims or hero’s is well, hit or miss sort of like Nightmare 3. But I like the way Ash has been aged and showing he just isn’t as tough as he use to be. Ash is once again featured with his iconic boom stick and chainsaw though this time it’s a harder challenge than expected. If you’re a fan of either of these characters, or 80’s horror in general, give this a go. It is a larger book but only has a few spots that slow you down. From what I could find, this is the authors only work but I will hopefully come across another one of her stories in the future.

I bought this fully expecting it to be awful. I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't at all. I'm a huge fan of Nightmare on Elm Street and Evil Dead, which is why I wanted to give this a try. The author did an amazing job of capturing the snarky personalities of Ash and Freddy. When I was reading this I was actually doing their voices in my head. It was a really fun read.

TOO MANY TYPOS!

Really great book, but too many typos! The typos would interfere with my flow of reading as I would have to backtrack to try to figure out some times what was trying to be said other times it was quite easy to figure out, but still interrupted the flow of reading

The Story was solid and fun...It captured Ash in all his cooky and amazing glory while diving into a deeper darker side of Freddy...Unfortunately the book is plagued with spelling error after spelling error....which ruins the flow of the read and hence keeping it from being a 5 star read!

Good story that ticked a lot of boxes from both franchises and had great callbacks to the films. In dire need of another edit though as there are a lot of mistakes in the writing.

DNF'd at 32%. I've given up trying to get through this book. It's been forever and it just hasn't hooked me, so I'm calling it here. This one isn't for me.

great read

Loved it. The trash talk and bickering between Freddy and ash was amazing. It was funny, horrific and epic. Everything I didn’t know I needed.
