Three novella-length paranormal romances in one overarching story of sociopolitical conflict. In an alternative South Africa, the animal predators are human, territorial hostilities have led to war, and loving outside your boundaries can get you killed.
Warning: if you're not a fan of scorching hot sex scenes, this book is not for you. However, a "tamer" version (sex-wise) of this series is available! https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4...
BANE OF HER DESIRE When Holly Ainran’s brother goes AWOL from an elite military force in South Africa, she confronts Commander Bane Ojore, a rare melanistic lion shifter. Sparks ignite, but Holly finds a challenge in taming this brooding, hostile beast. Bane does not expect the daughter of a high-ranking parliamentary executive to be a smart, code-breaking expert adamant about abolishing the lion caste hierarchy and ending the lion-hyena conflict. Nor does he expect such a stunning lioness to fall for him. But Bane’s job is to find the traitors supplying weapons to the hyenas, and all signs point to Holly’s brother. Holly won’t give up on her brother though…or Bane. As their passion escalates, so do the risks, the danger, and ultimately, their love.
DESIRES AT WAR Months as a POW leaves lion shifter Fix Ainran struggling to recover, but he can’t get the curvaceous Caryn Plumar out of his mind. Yet the beautiful daughter of the hyena chairman only torments the disabled former soldier with heated trysts before pulling away. No matter how much she desires Fix’s touch, Caryn’s obligations involve more than fighting for an independent hyena state in a land ruled by lions and fraught with war. She must sacrifice any chance of happiness and freedom by marrying within the clan to ensure her safety. Unable to stay apart, Fix and Caryn defy societal rules and risk their lives as they battle enemies, search for the truth about his captivity...and fall in love.
COOL BLUE DESIRE When Alina Van der Stel agrees to spring an imprisoned lion shifter in South Africa and hand him over to the rebels in return for information about her birth parents, she doesn’t expect the man to capture her mind as much as he does her body. Falsely accused of conspiracy, Kipper Lumbwi has no intention of allowing the icy blonde to sell him to the very traitors who landed him a stint in prison. Yet her ethereal blue eyes reflect years of sadness as a snow leopard trapped in a land of lions, and he understands her need to find her true kin. Except she’s not the only one targeting him. With a bounty-hunting hyena and the Defence Force in pursuit, Kipper and Alina agree to an alliance…one that leads to her finally experiencing the joys of desire. Can their passion earn them the trust they’ll need to survive?
Kira writes about animal magnetism and intrigue, where the heroes bring the heat and the heroines save the day. As a paranormal romance writer, Kira explores somewhat atypical pairings and settings and can’t help adding a twinge of societal awareness to her works, but the focus is always on the developing romance, passion, and happy endings. While some of her books are red hot steamy, you won’t find any hard-core BDSM. Kira prefers the hero and heroine to share the power and share the love. Kira is currently working on the second book in her Followers series. On a personal level, Kira is devoted to animal and ecological conservation (and cake, lots of cake).
If you love the concept of shapeshifting felines being true to their nature, you’ll love this series. In this tame version, the sex is delivered with a nice mix of romance and humor, along with a good reason for the speedy consummation, something I appreciated since I prefer a slower moving romance. The plot is fast paced but written with skill, so the situations and circumstances are well understood, even by a reader like me who doesn’t normally choose shapeshifting stories. I’ve only read a few and have found difficulty with suspension of my disbelief, but Ms. Shayde made it easy. She’s packed a lot of entertainment between the pages and handled the social commentary with ease while still making her point. I found this to be a fun read. I received a free copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
The story is not so much about the paranormal aspect of shifters. In this case the shifters are part of a story that talks about our society and many of the problems that come with it. All the characters here are examples of the way society expects people to act the part others consider they are born into. Whether you are the high class girls being trapped by the expectations of their caste, or the lower born doomed to do the will of others. There is a warning. There are two versions, one with all the sex thrown in and one with it removed. I am far from the proper type, so I chose the one with the sex in. The sex is common and graphic. I just skipped it because it detracted from the story. If you enjoy that in your books, go for this one. Otherwise I suggest you look for the less carnal version.
I really enjoyed this! I'm not usually a paranormal romance reader, but the premise was so original and well done that it really drew me in. I thought the stories got progressively stronger and I really liked the way they all linked together. The social commentary was also very cleverly done- this fantasy world was a very fitting metaphor for our own society. Recommended!
Kira Shayde writes a fast paced, exciting series that merges science fiction with romance with human-animal shifting for a story that will keep you tuning the pages. On the suface, it is an entertaining, suspenseful story about human-animal shifting with hyena, lions, jackals, and a lost snow leopard in southern Africa where society is on the verge of conflict and all out war due to a strong social hierarchy that limits opportunities and interactions between humans based on their animal form. But, read a little deeper and see the political commentary about sexism, racism, and white privilege in our society.
FYI, I had the opportunity to read an advanced copy before the release. Even though I'm not a big sci-fi or romance fan I really enjoyed these stories. They are fast-paced, engaging, and fun to read.
Bane of her Desire is the first book in this series of Primal Shifters by Kira Shayde. It is a well written shifter story that is quite different from your usual shifter story in my eyes. The author paints a new vision of a world with a different shifter world where shifter cougars are in charge. Of course there are always issues, outcasts that somehow find their way and place in this society that did not have a place for them on the inside.
The book is well written and has a good pace. There are some nice twists and turns along the way that follows the story of Holly in search of her brother who is MIA and Bane who is feared but and outcast in this society because of his genetics. I like how the author tells their story and brings them closer to you which makes you feel you their story instead of just reading along a book. You always want to feel with your characters which makes the book so much more vivid.
Holly seems fearless and some would say that is because she comes from a privileged family. This will make her journey easier but she is one of those who seems to not believe in the cast system of the society and sees people for who they are. She is extremely likable and I for one really enjoy this character a lot.
Bane is a lot more standoffish and secretive and not as personable, but that is what is fitting to his character and really who he is and what his "place" in this society has made him.
Together these two are a force to be reckoned with and they will cause some ripples in this cast system society, and the question is, are they all ready for what is to come? Definitely an interesting read with action, romance and an interesting plot.
In Desires at War the story continues and the author Kira Shayde now focuses on different characters. Fix who was missing and can't remember what happened to him in the first book is in search of what happened to him. He has help by Caryn, who is in a lower cast in this society because she is a wolf shifter. Both Fix and Holly don't care and befriend her because both realize it is who you are not what your genetics make you.
They struggle with trying to find out what happened to fix because someone doesn't want them to find out, and they are someone with power. I do like to get to know these two characters. The author has a great way to develop the characters, keeping it interesting, breaking down walls, throwing in some steamy scenes whilst moving along in an interesting plot that keeps you glued to the pages. The pace is very good and follows along a nice consistent pace that never rushes you nor drags out. There is always something going on and I never felt bored or anything. This was the perfect second book in this series and I for one am curious to see what the author has in store next.
Cool Blue Desire is the third book in the Primal Shifters series by Kira Shayde. The author came up with an interesting continuation of the series .I wasn't sure how she would be able to follow up on the last two books but fear not, she had more in store and in this one she focused on Alina who was desperate to figure out where she came from. She is definitely a real outcast in this cast society but at the very least she wanted to know where she came from and if there was any family left that she could reconnect.
This journey of self discovery was not without danger but thankfully she had some fantastic help. We finally get to really know Kipper in this third book. The author continues to develop the characters and I just love how these two slowly connect to each other. We also learn more about this dystopian shifter world and how cougars, lynxes, bears and wolfs all fit into it. This one is more action packed I found and I really like this story quite a bit.
All these couples that found each other in these three books are bringing about change, much needed change and it is interesting to see how it is affecting this society that is separated in these casts that are very stringent. I like that this series brings so much together, the paranormal, a society that has a casting system in it, romance, action and great plots that read so well. The books are written well and you can just sit back and relax on a Saturday afternoon enjoying a good read.
