Lisa Hyde is different. She knows things, secret things. She has a special gift that has both saved her life and caused her great pain. She is a type of clairvoyant that gets glimpses into the future, but those glimpses aren’t fully reliable.
When she connects with a child hood friend in her second year of college, Eric Reid, and falls in love with him, she begins seeing images that point to a possible tragic end to his life. Then she must do all that she can to save him, but how can she when the clues are so obscure? She knows, though, that he’s in danger, and she knows that she stands between him and his fate, so she must keep vigilant because if she lets down, she won’t get a second chance…

Note: I'm unsure if the author classified this as a YA title or not, but I think it would appeal to older teens (as well as adults), hence my 'young-adult' shelf.

I found this a good, engaging, easy-to-read title. The story mostly centers around two Sacramento State college students, Eric and Lisa. Lisa is quirky, boasts a unique style, and she sees future events in the clouds (and walls, and other things). Eric's initial intimidation by Lisa soon leads to intrigue, and then a budding romance. I enjoyed watching their relationship evolve.

The plot moves along at a slow and steady pace, which some might find frustrating, but I thought was relaxing. The author introduces a handful of characters, with just enough detail that we get to know them, while still concentrating strongly on the two main people. I appreciate the focus on character development. I did question how Lisa was able to change her hair color so frequently (and dramatically) in the first part of the book. Isn't her hair fried by now? I thought, after she went from stark blond with black streaks to pink and other colors, and then back again. Maybe she's got some wigs, or some temporary spray-on color that she uses, and I'm just overthinking the condition of her hair.

The point of view changes among a few characters, though I didn't notice this happening until I'd finished a good portion of the book. I liked getting a little deeper into these characters in this way.

Sometimes too many details are given (I don't need to always know what Eric is eating in the cafeteria, for example), though it never bogged things down for me. I always was curious about what would happen next, and hoped that the ending would not ruin my fair impression.

Happily, the ending does what a good first-in-a-series title should do: wrap up enough things that the reader is satisfied, while at the same time setting up what will be happening at the start of the next book.

Now it's time for my biggest complaint. I would have given this a 3.5 rating (at least), if not for the many typos and errors. They are abundant and distracting, and there are even some in the description of the book on Goodreads. I'm sure that having someone read over the book to look for punctuation, spelling, and other issues (and then fixing them!) would make the reading experience more pleasurable.

Overall, and especially if you don't get twitchy like me when you read a typo or errors, Shapes in the Clouds was an enjoyable, quick read with a neat twist on standard fare of this type. I will likely read the next book in this series at some point.
