The Duke of Fire is the first book in the Regency Hearts series by Jennifer Monroe. I thought this was a delightfully well-written Victorian Regency book of the genre of historical romance. The root of the plotline was based on deception and greed, which creates so much unwarranted negativity. That is an aspect of life I thoroughly do not understand and cannot identify with.

Having witnessed the roguish ways of men, Miss Jane Harcourt has decided she is better off to remain a spinster. Working as a governess has brought her fulfillment, but when she finds herself suddenly without a position, Jane begins to fret. When her cousin alerts her that a Duke is seeking a governess for his son, Jane is overcome with joy. That is until she finds out that this is a man who is believed to have killed his wife, a man known as the Duke of Fire.

Michael Blackstone, Duke of Hayfield, knows all too well the rumors surrounding his wife’s death. For years, he has remained isolated inside his home with his son, allowing his misery and the guilt of her death to consume him. When the latest in a string of governesses leaves their home, he sends a word in hopes of finding anyone who would risk being in his employ.

Jane lost her job and any reference because she stood up for herself against the advances from a man in whose family she was employed by. She found another position without a reference by sheer luck, a blessing from above perhaps. Michael Blackstone was much too dependent on others for his sanity and safety. It was quite difficult to believe that a man of his position was so intolerably gullible.

Desperate for employment, Jane agrees to work for the man she fears, but when she meets the Duke she is left to wonder if there is any humanity left within him. As times progress, Jane begins to see a different side of the infamous Duke of Fire, for she sees a man who is overcome with guilt and grief—a man so lost, he is losing his mind. For Michael, Jane has brought more than excellent teaching inside his home, she has also brought hope into an otherwise dark life. Finding the woman intriguing and enjoying her company, his feelings for her begin to grow, although he fears his love will never be returned.

There were twists in the storyline that turned one way and then turned back again creating some mystery, suspense, and annoyance until the reader wonders if either of these two had much common sense left if they had any at all.

Although she is afraid, Jane allows herself to fall for the broken Duke despite not knowing if her love will be enough to save the man from himself...

This is a clean and wholesome tale that is able to stand on its own while delivering a H.E.A.

This series is available through the Amazon Kindle Unlimited program.

This book was far too predictable, which is a shame because the premise seems really interesting (not original, but interesting). I could tell who the villain was the second they were introduced. Monroe tried to hint, but it wasn't even remotely subtle. Michael "misplaces" his checkbook and his brother points it out on the shelf, then gets defensive when Michael questions how he knew that. Michael then keeps "misplacing" small things and thinks he's going mad. Obviously, it is a plot to discredit him because

The Duke Of Fire is a delightful story that has a bit of everything. From romance and drama to tension and conflict, and joy and sorrow, there really is something for everyone. Reminiscent of Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre, it is a lovely, historical fiction novel set in the magnificent Wellesley Manor, part of the beautifully scenic Exeter Estate, in England.

What’s really likeable about it straight-away are the opening chapters that draw you into the main character, Miss Jane Harcourt. She is a kind, compassionate, strong, and clever governess, but has to leave her present employment due to the unwanted advances and desirous pursuits of her boss. She goes to stay with her cousin Anne and her husband David, until she is able to secure another position, working as a governess.

Jane finds herself further employment with Michael Blackstone, the Duke of Hayfield, also known as the Duke of Fire and his son, Samuel, a sweet eight-year-old little boy. Five years ago the Duke’s wife was killed in a fire and he has lived with the stress and guilt of her death ever since, as he was unable to save her from the fire before she perished. The Duke himself suffered terrible disfigurement and has become a virtual recluse in his own home.

The extremely wealthy Duke has a brother, Lord Robert Blackstone, who assists with all business matters concerning their vast estate, but, unfortunately, does not take much of a liking to Jane’s arrival. Jane in return is mistrustful of Lord Blackstone’s intentions.

I felt instantly on her side of the thoughtful, pretty, and caring Jane, particularly in her initial dealings with the Duke, with whom she was already in awe of. You can immediately sense that there was something going on, and one of the highlights of the book was following how they dealt with their emotional feelings. The Duke is, at first, hard to work out but you gradually get to know him as the story unfolds and see that he has many surprising qualities. Both the plot and the character development are excellent, and the story-line is very believable. The story is both captivating and engaging. It held my interest from start to finish, and I found myself rooting for both Jane and the Duke as they tried to deal with all of their conflicting emotions of that time and the courage they showed in confronting their challenges.

The Duke of Fire was an interesting novel particularly with regard to the interaction of the different characters - a loving, bright and energetic young boy, a handsome, but selfish and untrustworthy brother and a judgemental, gossiping, close-knit ton. Plenty of emotional angst and ups and downs along the way and plenty of surprises. I loved the authors writing style which I found very easy to read. It was a fantastic read!

I delighted in every page of the book from beginning to end and my only criticism would probably be that it could have been a little longer. I liked very much how the book was ended. I have been inspired to read more from Jennifer Monroe and I highly recommend this book. I suggest wholeheartedly that you add it to your reading list.

Thank you to Hidden Gems and the author, Jennifer Monroe for a free ARC of this book in exchange for a voluntary, honest review.

WOW... what a nail biter this was. The beginning provided the background information. Then the pace picked up and suspense filled each page. I was wide eyed reading, sitting at the edge of my seat and I was filled with tension as to what was going to happen next. At the beginning I did not care very much for the lead female character, Jane. She let gossip and assumptions rule her. But then she displayed characteristics that were admirable. She was sensitive, kind, encouraging, intuitive, brave and loving. She wanted only the best for her employer Lord Michael Blackstone, the Duke of Hayfield and his son Samuel. Later in the story Jane's character and resolve would be sorely tested. Michael lived in darkness after the death of his wife Elizabeth. When he tried to save her from death during a fire, he was disfigured on one side of his face and body. He resigned himself that the way he looked would frighten anyone and everyone away. But Michael was more than just his person. underneath his sorrow and guilt was a man who was able to love his son and be kind to the staff that served him. For some reason, he could not keep a governess long enough to save his soul. When Jane applied for the job, she was frightened of him, but she really needed employment and she needed to earn enough to plan for her future. She was at peace with the thought she would never marry. As Michael and Jane's friendship grew, the was plans afoot to thwart their fledgling love. Little by little Jane started to put the pieces together, but was accused of theft and was immediately dismissed and thrown out of the estate. Jane knew Michael would not listen to her suspicions nor believe what she overheard. She wrote him a letter telling him everything. Michael started to doubt himself, but tested what Jane had told him. Come to find out she was on to something. Michael left immediately for Jane's cousin’s home to see her. But what he found was terrifying. This is an exciting read and I highly recommend it. I received an Advanced Readers Copy of this book via Hidden Gems and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is a very sweet and emotion filled book. I got teary in a few places. Well written with an interesting story! There were a few places where a word or two was omitted somehow in the published version, but it didn't take away from my enjoyment of this very fine example of a Regency Romance! Recommend.

Miss Jane Harcourt has seen the roguish ways of men and has resigned herself to remaining alone the rest of her life. Working as a governess brings her joy but finding herself suddenly without a position, she begins to fret, worried for her future.

Michael Blackstone, Duke of Hayfield, knows all too well the rumors surrounding his wife’s death. For years, he has remained isolated inside his home with his son, allowing his misery and the guilt of her death to consume him. When the latest in a string of governesses leaves their home, he sends word in hopes of finding anyone who would risk being in his company.

For Michael, Jane has brought more than excellent teaching inside his home, she has also brought hope in an otherwise dark life.

When Jane starts to see past the rumors, and as the feelings in own heart begin to grow, she ponders the question: Is love enough to save the man from himself?

Will the facts be enough to save the man and this blossoming romance?
I couldn't put this book down. Even though I am not usually a huge fan of sweet/clean romance this one has enough mystery behind it to draw the reader in.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through Hidden Gems and finished it very quickly.
The motherless child is a very intriguing bonus in this mostly clean mystery with romance. His love for his governess is the catalyst behind the romance in this reader's opinion.

I love a well done Regency Romance, and have a special fondness for stories involving dukes (as my poor sweetie knows, I bemoan the fact that he did not turn out to have secretly been one). I love takes of the power of love to redeem damaged souls, and of strong Regency ladies perfectly happy to be “spinsters” if that is their lot in life - until they find their “someone special”. Jane Harcourt, the spinsterish governess in Jennifer Monroe’s The Duke of Fire: Regency Hearts Book 1, is perfect for this role, and her damaged soul beau to be, Michael Blackstone, Duke of Hayfield, is also ideally cast. There’s a HEA here, of course, but the journey to get there is s fabulous (and well written) one. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.

This is romantic, suspenseful and dramatic. Michael's grief has left him gullible, oblivious and insecure. Jane is strong, determined and caring. After Jane was forced to leave her position without a reference, she knew it would be hard to get another position so when the opportunity to work for The Duke of Fire came she took it. Believing that he probably killed his wife, and that he was horribly disfigured, she steeled herself against worry and started her job. Only to find that he is a kind, caring person who she doesn't believe would ever do any harm to woman he loved. His guilt has lead him to believe that he is going mad, and that he should never show his face in society. But Jane convinces him otherwise and he starts to feel better, only to have things fall apart so completely and publicly that he's worse off than ever. A twist or two in the storyline, and the waiting for redemption keep you turning the pages.

This is a clean Regency romance novel that involves Michael Blackstone, Duke of Hayfield and a governess, Miss Jane Harcourt. Michael, who was badly scarred in a fire that killed his wife and has been in seclusion for 6 years, hires Jane for the position of governess to his young son, Samuel. It doesn't take long before they realize that Jane is the light needed in their lives. Unfortunately, someone is trying to prove that the Duke is going mad and will stop at nothing...even commit murder! I enjoyed this story and thought it was well written.

I received a free copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Jane a governess had to leave her post due to the Lord of the house and of course, the Lady felt Jane had been the problem, not her husband. In turn, she now takes a job with Michael Blackstone as a governess for his son Samuel. There is a dark past for Michael some unknown events that will not become clear until you read the book. Mystery, danger in a story were acceptance and love will take center stage makes this a story that was hard for me to put down. I highly recommend this book it was a marvelous piece of writing.

Fast-paced read with plenty of twists and turns. This historical read is entertaining with great characters. I liked it.

Boring characters

This book has so many mistakes in it. There were words missing, misspelled words, incorrect pronouns, and more. I am really not a grammar natzi, but I found it very distracting. The characters were also very boring and 1 dimensional. I think the story line could have been interesting if the characters hadn't been so dull. I dont think that there was much if any thought put into this book, and I would have been upset if I had paid for it.

LOVE BREAKS THROUGH ALL BOUNDARIES.

A Regency novel that shows the depth of how greed can change people and make them do heinous things. Michael and Jane go through different stages of beliefs and benefits from the caste system. The interaction of these two characters and the outside influences on their beliefs and lives show the fragility of love and strength of the heart.

The Novel involves, suspense, guilt, turmoil. The Duke of Hayfield. Better known as the "Duke of Fire"
Michael the Duke suffered a great loss six years ago when his house perished with his beloved wife the Duchess Elizabeth. Barely making it out alive with his infant son Samuel.
The Duke has lived with guilt, nightmares & shame during those years. He has never left the growns of his country Estate since the fateful tragedy.
He has relied on his younger brother Lord Robert to assist him in helping him invest, the Estate in capital ventures. Though, the years Michael has also lost his memory. It started with little things. Now it seems to become more frequent. Misplacing his ledger. Believing he has requested one type of attire to wear. To be wearing something different. When his Valet informs him he requested something different. He has trusted his brother Robert to seek what is best for him & the Estate.
Seems like when the Duke starts to believe, or trust his judgment them something changes. This time its the loss of his Governess. Who informed him she was leaving immediately. No explanation. He was putting an advertisement to find a new governess immediately.
Miss Jane Harcourt, was a Governess at the estate of the Earl of Clarkson. Unfortunaely she had to leave her employment immediately if she wanted her reputation stayed in take. As much as she would miss Master Arthur. She could no longer deal with the Earl's advances. Let alone let Lady Caroline call her a whore. Though, its' known that Lord Clarkson is known for his wondering eye. But of course the mistress of the family would believe it's the servants fallt.
Jane was heading for her cousin's Anne & David's home until she could find additional employment. Anne would always support her cousin. Even when it was not feasible for her own household. After a few days, Anne had heard about the advisement that the Duke of Fire was looking for a new Governess. He was paying doubled the normal salary for a governess.
She informed Jane but informed her of the rumors, that he is considered a murderer of his beloved wife's death. Plus he looks like a beast due to the scars left from the fire.
Jane knew she needed to seek this position. She didn't want to intrude on her cousin's household longer than she had too.
Now Jane had her own insecurities. She was always told how stange she looked due to her piercing grey eyes. She had men interested in her only sextual & only married. That she was the marrying type because of her character. But she was good enough to be a mistress.
Miss Jane had to go for this interview & see for herself this Duke of Fire.
Both Miss Jane & The duke of Hayfield seem to have a connection. He believed in her beauty both physically & intelligently. After a couple of months Jane witnessed Michael's vulnerability. The love of Samuel & only wanting the best for him. The Duke has never left the grounds since he moved to the Estate after the fire. With Jane's encouragement he would slowly release some of his fears to go on an outing with Samuel & Miss Jane. Fear of how society would react to his features along with the rumors of being a murderer still weighed heavily on his heart.
Though, Miss Jane seemed to believe in his inner strength & knew that his son needed to face the world. If he to was to be the next Duke. Now that Jane & Michael started to open up she could see his sincere love for his wife & Samuel. He couldn't be a murderer of his beloved Elizabeth. He seem to be truly tortured by her death. She could hear his Grace during her sleepless night's of his night terrors calling Elizabeth's name.
On a fevered night, Miss Jane at Samuel request had to nurse his Grace thru the night. He was delirious & continuing to apologize to Elizabeth. But he also blurted his admiration, & beauty of his governess.
Unfortunately the evils within the Duke of Hayfield's inner circle were planning a plot to have the Duke of Hayfield declared incompetent due to his memory loss. Once out of the picture they would then kill the young Duke. Unfortunately, for Jane she was now a threat to that plot from happening. By encouraging the Duke to come out of his shell & face society.
Lord Robert continued to convince Michael that Miss Jane is a servant with a motive to get to his wealth. but she proved him wrong at each test he provided.
What Happens next could be the death of Miss Jane & the Duke. Can Michael believe in his heart over the people who are truly out to harm him.
This book shows, heart, compassion, deceit, murder, love & the power of of inner strength to create a future. Will Samuel get his wish? Will Miss Jane Harcourt become his mother?

It was a good, cute, and quick read. I won't be continuing the series, but that's not anything against this book.

I liked the characters, especially little Samuel, and I liked how everything came out in the end. But there were moments when things seemed too rushed, or not enough detail given. Like when Michael is telling Jane the story that gives him nightmares, the one that is the cause of his grief. I didn't really feel anything. The explanation, the story itself, was too short. Not enough detail given about how Michael might be having a hard time telling it. The only emotion we see while the story is being told, is Jane beginning to cry. Which was not enough for me to feel like I might cry myself.

Again, it's a cute and quick read. I'm not sad I read it or anything. I enjoyed it for what it is. But I also feel like it had the potential to be a lot better, but it stayed on a mediocre sort of level. Perhaps if this hadn't been on Kindle Unlimited and I'd actually had to pay for it as an individual book, I'd be a bit upset that I spent the money on it. But, it is on KU, and so I'm good with that.

For anyone wondering, it does sort of follow the typical romance formula for books like this. Two people who don't think they look good meet and show each other otherwise. They're attracted to each other a little too quickly, but I expected that going in. They fall for each other, the bad guy does something to cause a rift to go between them, and then something else happens that causes it to right itself. So when you're in the mood to read a book that follows that generic formula, this is a good one to pick. Cause sometimes we like a book that we can sort of predict where it might be going. If that's not your cup of tea though, you might want to wait on this one.

All in all, I'm happy to have read it. I say once again, it's a good story and a quick read. It's helping me complete my reading goal for the year, so there's that too. But I could not get invested enough in anybody here that I would want to try and continue reading the next book in the series to see what any new couple might have to go through next.

A Regency Romance with a Gothic Flare

As a governess, Miss Jane Harcourt understood from personal experience how the peerage treated a servant. Although she did not understand their attraction to her, still she again was leaving a position because of the Lord in charge. Was there any place she could teach her charge and not be accosted by her employer.

As a duke, Michael Blackstone, the Fourth Duke of Hayfield understood from personal experience how much guilt and despair a man can endure and still survive. Although he faced each day for the sake of his son, still he wondered how much time he had left before madness overtook him. Was there any place he could find peace.

As I read The Duke of Fire by Jennifer Monroe, I was reminded of the Gothic novels I was so fond of as a teenager. As with the novels from my youth, this one had a likable but vulnerable hero who's attracted to a wise and strong heroine. Some would call the plot predictable because the villain is so obvious. Still the suspense of the plot is just how the villain is going to slip up and be found out. Thankfully, good overcomes evil and the made-for-each-other couple realize their happily-ever-after, even when such an ending in real life would be most improbable. Then again, this is romantic fiction.

Content: This well written stand-alone novel is clean and sweet. It is suitable for any age reader.

Read Again? Probably not

First time reading this author. This is also the first book in a series, and I did enjoy this one well enough that I plan to read the next in the series. Couple of reasons I gave this 3*** and not 4, is because there were several editing issues throughout that became a bit annoying after a while. It did not detract from the story, but they were present enough that they bothered me.

Anyway, I did enjoy this story. It has an almost Jane Eyre and Beauty and the Beast kind of vibe. Michael is haunted by his inability to save his beloved wife, Elizabeth, from a deadly fire. He is badly burned from saving his son from the same fire. Terrible rumors circulate regarding the circumstances surrounding Elizabeth's death, and he becomes known as the Duke of Fire. Wanting to protect his son, he shuts himself away in his country estate.

There is also a bit of a mystery element to this story, though I had it pegged pretty early on, it was good to see it all come about.

I felt for Michael, and all he was going through. His son is a delightful element to the story.

The other reason I gave this a 3 instead of a 4, is because it kind of fell a little flat for me as to the building romance. I would have liked more in that regard.

Overall, I did enjoy the story and do plan to read more of this author.

Heartwarming regency story!

I enjoyed getting to read this story!
The Duke of Fire known to many as the mysterious duke who never goes in public and was responsible for his wife’s death is in need of a governess. Jane as the governess to his son, knows the rumors surrounding the duke but desperate times calls for desperate measures. Will Jane find a new side to the duke and fall in love with him despite attempting to guard her heart?
Overall I enjoyed reading this novel, it reminded me a lot of Jane Eyre and Rebecca with the whole mystery and deceased wife being burned. Jane was a good character I loved how she kept an open mind especially when those around her kept gossiping of the duke. Michael had a wonderful heart, I loved how he treated her with respect even though she was a governess someone deemed below his station. This story had a wonderful message of loving someone regardless of their flaws or external beauty. Overall this was a wonderful heartwarming tale!

Predictable. The villain is obvious from the start.
Jane and Michael seem to fall in love very readily despite not really having spent much time together. He does seem more obsessed with her beauty than her personality.
I was rather bored by about 30% it felt quite repetitive.
Michael is very quick to believe lies about Jane, honestly she should have kicked him to the curb not forgiven him at the drop of a hat.
Don't even get me started about the fire at the end, anyone who has witnessed a real house fire (which I have) would know how little time there actually is to get out and get someone else out. Okay I know I can't expect the author to have actually witnessed a fire, and I know I have to realise it's a work of fiction and artistic license is allowed, but I guess that plotline is also triggering for me, so I allow myself to be sensitive about it.

This was well written and the premise was good. It’s a beauty and the beast trope, plus gaslighting by villain. I personally don’t like when our leads automatically believe what other (nefarious) people tell them. I also don’t like misunderstandings. I hate it. It went on far too long for the leads to figure out who the villain was. I skimmed. I wanted the leads to work together to expose the plot by the villain. But, this was not that story. It really was horrible how wealthy people are believed for no reason, while working people and servants are at their mercy. This was a kissed only book.

A story worth reading

I loved this book. Jane had a rough go of it as many governess had during this time. Not only were they servants but we're targets for evil Lords and houseguests. Jane had an inner strength that saved her from such trials but the lot of the governess was never an easy one. Jane's strength and Michael's second chance for love give this story it's ups and downs and twists to the plot. Only when you listen with your heart can you find the truth. Ms Monroe is a great find for me as I quite enjoy her writing and can't wait to read more.Enjoy!

I am not a Grammer Nazi

Easily could have been a 4 or 5 star if anyone had bothered to read through it once it was finished. I am not picky about grammar, but when he takes her arm in his hand and she proceeds to remove his hand from HIS arm, I'm quite disturbed. That was actually pretty funny but such mistakes happened constantly and some sentences made absolutely no sense. Otherwise I loved the story and became attached to the characters.

Michael and Jane

Well written with good characters. Would liked to have had a little more romance but as readers we always want more. Michael believed his brother was helping him overcome the Grady of the fire that killed his wife but in the end he wanted his brothers Dickerson and money. Jane finally wrote a letter to Michael and conveyed this message. Wonderful story and would highly recommend, very clean written romance.

Historical romance with a touch of mystery

This book is an enjoyable historical romance with a touch of suspense and well imagined characters that cover a gambit of emotions for both the hero, heroine and the reader. Although much of the subject matter is dark, there is a satisfying happily ever after and an adorable child that gives the story an uplifting feeling. A fast and easy read.

A wonderful clean love story

I really enjoyed this story. Watching the duke come out of his bitter shell and embrace life because of Jane's love for him was captivating. Watching him being tricked by his own brother (not a spoiler because any reader will figure that out as soon as Robert's character is introduced) was trnse, I kept wondering what Robert would do next. I expected something different as climax, but liked the written one better.
