Lawless Kings #5

Merciless King

Rate this book
Two years ago Van King killed a man and saved my life.

I’ve thought about the handsome private investigator every day since, fantasized about what would happen when I finally saw him again. And when I do, it’s far from the reunion of my dreams.

A copycat serial killer wants to finish what I barely survived. Van rushes to my side once more, and shows me the man he truly is: protective, possessive, merciless, especially when it comes to me and my safety. He thinks I’m afraid of him. But I’ve loved Van from the moment his dark, enigmatic gaze met mine.

This time, I won’t allow my fear or debilitating shyness to rule me. I sure as hell won’t hide from the heat that explodes between us while I’m under his protection. No, I’ll welcome it and beg for more.

Merciless King is book five in the Lawless Kings series by Sherilee Grey! This book can be read as a stand alone but the characters are recurring from the previous books. Its here that I have to ask you, WHY? Why would you want to miss any of the awesomeness of this series? Because it is awesome. But, THIS BOOK!!! Van!!! I’m in love!!! Sadly, he doesn’t want me, he wants London Rivera, who I am about to tell you all about.

woman in flower shop

The book starts right out with a huge bang two years previously. London is brutally attacked and Van comes to her rescue and saves her life. After he is sure she is okay, he fades out of her life for reasons I’ll explain and we fast forward to the present. London now owns her own successful flower shop, Beautiful Blooms. London has a social anxiety disorder which makes it difficult for her to interact with others, especially men. She has never forgotten Van, fantasizes about him. But she hasn’t seen him since after her attack two years prior. Recently, London has been getting that creepy feeling as though she is being followed. She ignored her instincts two years ago and she’s not going to do it this time. But the police just think she is still suffering from PTSD. So she goes to Van for help. Only he initially doesn’t believe her either. Until he is proven wrong and she is once again attacked. They say lightening doesn’t strike twice! Well, that doesn’t seem to be the case for her.

“I was a dangerous man, I knew this, my brother and my friends knew this. With London, I had the potential to become a monster.”

Van King owned his own Investigative Services Business. He never forgot London. It’s been two years since he has seen her. He knows he can’t be the man for her. He has a darkness inside him and she deserves so much more. But when she walks back into his life, this time he can’t say no. He wants her too much. His body craves her. Maybe they can just enjoy each other until she is safe, then let her go. Because he can’t be what she needs.

“What was it about this woman? How was it that every part of her called to every part of me? Because that’s how it felt.”

As Van tries to find the man who is threatening London, they become closer. London feels safe with Van and only Van. She is determined to not let her anxiety hold her back this time. She let him go two years ago, but not this time. This time she didn’t want to have any regrets.

I could not put this book down. Sherilee Grey is my addiction. Not only was the suspense aspect of this story gripping with twists and turns along the way, the romantic side of things between Van and London had the butterflies in my stomach taking flight. Van was everything, just everything. He was all alpha, growly, jealous, possessive. Need I go on? I loved the growth I saw in London when she was with him. The difference in her from the beginning of the book to the end was just amazing. And you know why? Van!

I could go on and on but basically, I just need to say, “Read This Book!” That is the most important thing I can tell you! I don’t think you’ll regret it. Because, Van!!! Thank you, Sherilee! I’m on the edge of my seat to see what you have for us next!!

Out standing read!!!! I'm a fan for life!!! This was a fabulous sexy read with all kinds of great suspense and had me flipping though page after page. Van king is the total package! Sexy ,hot and so alpha a take charge kind of guy with just the right amount darkness. And London is Awesome sweet, kind and has that kind of innocence that is so refreshing. Together these two are so combustible and every time they come together it's breath taking. Besides these two main characters I loved the whole gang, so many interesting couples and detective Daniels is very intriguing too!! I loved the flow of this story and the twist's and turns had me on the edge of my seat. Can't wait to read more by this author! I'm so in stalker mode!!💖💋

Oh my gosh! I just thought I loved all the other Lawless Kings, but I didn’t have a clue what this author had in store for me with Van!

Two years ago, Van was on a job when London popped up on his radar. Instantly, attracted to her, he watches her and obsesses over her. When a serial killer attacks her and almost takes her life, he steps in.

description

He has spent the past couple of years hungry for her, but knows he can’t pursue her. He isn’t a good man. His past has proven he can never be a good man. But when London walks back into his life he has to keep reminding himself of that, even as she makes him feel things he’s never felt before.

”I’d never been affected by another human being the way London Rivera affected me…Everything about her hit every one of my hot buttons.”

When strange and terrifying things reminds London of that time two years ago, she seeks help and finally turns to the one man who was there at the worse time of her life. The man that made her feel safe. When her past rushes to the present, she finds herself securely ensconced in Van’s warm arms. This is only a temporary situation and once life gets back to normal she will have a few pleasant memories to overshadow her fear.

description

Van is the perfect protective hero. The kind that I absolutely love and can never get enough of. He will do anything, ANYTHING, to keep London safe. But even as he longs to have her forever, he struggles with his own issues and fears.

”No, what worried me was the cold, ruthless, violent part of me that would do anything, and I mean anything, to protect those people. That part of me, when it came out, brought pain and rage and vengeance with it. I knew what I was truly capable of. I could dish that sh!t out without mercy, without losing a moment of sleep.”

London is sweet, shy and gentle. Suffering from social anxiety she hasn’t been able to open herself up to people. With her past in a constant loop in her mind, she sets her sights on living her life. I loved that she began the changes herself and it wasn’t a result of Van’s presence in her life. With each step forward she grew stronger and I cheered all along the way for her. When added to her acceptance of Van and all that he was, I was totally sold on her character.

”He’d killed a man for me before, and he would again. Maybe that should make me uneasy or frightened, that he was capable of that. But it didn’t Knowing the lengths Van would go to fo me only made me…love him more than I already did. He made me feel incredibly safe. I was safe with him.”

description

This was such a wonderful read. The emotions between this couple, as well as individually, rang true and although there is a bit of push and pull from Van, I totally understood his reasoning and it never got to be too much.

The chemistry between Van and London was absolutely sizzling and left no doubt of its validity. This author does steamy in the best possible way, but for this couple, it left me dry mouthed and wide eyed. So good!

description

Definitely a read for those who love strong, protective alphas that show a bit of their jealous tendencies as well as a heroine who grows during the story resulting in a stronger character more than able to handle their hero.

Merciless King is a standalone book within the Lawless Kings Series. As this is the last book in the series, this story was bittersweet and so worth the wait.

This is the story of Van King who during an investigatory operation a couple years prior runs to a girl’s assistance during a brutal crime. Fast forward two years, London who managed to survive the attack is barely going through the paces of living. Although incredibly brave her anxiety is at an all-time high. London has never been overly confident or assertive, but her sense of paranoia feels far too real to be ignored. When the police disregard her concerns, she turns to the one man she has never forgotten, the one man who saved her life, Van King.

Van King was the kind of hero I adore. He was tormented, heroic, possessive but ultimately kind. He has always been fascinated with the sweet and awkward London but had maintained his distance believing he could never be the kind of man she needed. This was until he could no longer ignore London’s need for protection. It felt real. I wanted Van to be real….

Merciless King was fast paced and angsty without it consuming the overall story. It allowed this story to be emotional and so damn sexy, that I loved every moment.

I was hooked from the very first chapter!

Van King, head of a security firm, was staking out an apartment when he sees London walking home. She happens to live next door to the guy he was staking out. After seeing her several days in a row, he had become a bit obsessed with her. During his stake out he hears her scream from her apartment and intervenes, saving her life from a serial killer. He's there for her as she recovers but makes the decision to walk away thinking he isn't good enough for her.

Van comes from an abusive home and he fears that the darker side of himself is too much like his father. London is just too sweet and he believes she deserves better. While I normally don't like when a hero pushes away for this reason, I think the author did a really good job of giving us his thought process and you really see how much he craves London. Knowing how much he wanted her and how intense his feelings were negated the fact that he tried to stay away from her.

Jump forward a bit in time and it looks like London may have a stalker. When the police won't take her seriously, she goes to the man who saved her life. As much as Van tries to stay away from London, he can't ignore the danger to her.

London is a very shy, sweet heroine. She has social anxiety and struggles particularly with men. It's made worse after her near death experience. Despite the anxiety, she feels safe with Van and was hurt when he walked away. She isn't a doormat though. She was bold enough to ask for what she wanted and did it in a way that didn't seem out of character.

If I could describe this book in one word, it would be intense. The story line was intense, Van was intense and the sex in this book was really intense. I really liked his dominant personality against her shy and sweet personality. It just worked and I was completely hooked!

I am reading this series all out of order, but then again, that's me.
I recently discovered this author from one of my Goodreads friends and I am enjoying the hell out of her books.
She writes these sexy, possessive heros that are just crazy about their women and this reader is in heaven. This book is no exception.
This book is romantic suspense ,and I swear the first few pages ,I thought that it was like a scene straight out of Criminal Minds.
The hero is a private investigator who works with his brother and a group of friends. He has been working on a case and the suspect lives in the heroine' s building,he has surveillance equipment set up and can hear what goes on,even in the heroine' s apartment. He has been crushing on her .One day he hears the heroine being attacked in her apartment and runs to save her, when he gets to the apartment,he sees a crazed man wielding a knife and stabbing the heroine, she has been stabbed a total of 5 times so far, and psycho serial killer was going in for the kill stab. The hero shoots him between the eyes and kills him.
The hero attends to the heroine, and tells her to hang on and do not die.
Two years later, the heroine is recovered from the attack physically, but not mentally, she has severe panic issues and social anxiety disorder. She continues to work in her shop as a florist.
The hero has stayed away from her these past 2 years, but he has kept tabs on her from a distance.
They meet up again face to face when she goes to him for help. She feels that she is being watched ,and has been getting phone calls with hang ups.
The police has not been of help, and this is where the hero makes his appearance back into her life.He too is of no help, until there is a break in into the flower shop and the heroine manages to fend off the attacker and she locks herself into the walk in safe .The hero is able to talk her down and tells her that she will be staying with him for protection.Their relationship develops from here.
I was kept on guessing who the attacker was till almost the end of the story.
There were couples from prior stories that I was teased about and will definitely read their books in the future.
For me, this was a really good read that I enjoyed, and looking forward to more reads by this author.

5 - The angel to my devil… Stars!

I am really sad that this is the last book in the Lawless Kings series, having read pretty much everything this author has released now, I can honestly say I think it’s my favourite series she has so far released.

Being the target of a serial killer, living through it… had changed me.

Van like his brother and the rest of the team has a few skeletons in his closet, and a demon or two from his past that he still battles, but essentially he’s a good guy, with a tough exterior, take no prisoners attitude, and alpha personality which all the girls go wild for. Saving London Rivera from a serial killer two years previously bought out all the protective instincts in him then, and now that she’s being targeted again, we get full on protective Van yumminess.

"You can rest… You’re safe now. I’m not going anywhere."

Dealing with another violent stalker doesn’t do much to help London’s social anxiety or night terrors. Van King is a whole other matter though, because although he makes her nervous for a whole bunch of reasons, he is also the only man who she has ever felt completely safe with since her father’s death. Being in such close proximity to him as the threat to her safety increases only exacerbates the connection and attraction between them, and what started out as reluctance on Van’s part soon becomes ‘I cannot keep my hands off you’ obsession once London makes it clear the attraction is mutual.

Whatever this thing was between us… it wasn’t something I could ignore.

I started this book expecting to read a few chapters and go about my day, what actually happened was I started the book and I forgot about my day, I almost read it in one sitting, I enjoyed it that much. Not as heavy as some of its predecessors it was a great way to finish the series because you get to see a little of everyone else as Van’s story plays out. I can’t help but hope Detective Connor gets a book or a novella at some point though, because he feels like a little unfinished business to me in relation to tying up all threads of the series.

"You weren’t supposed to live…"

Another winner, I cannot wait to see what Sherilee has in store for us in the future.

Van King is everything you want an Alpha male to be. Sweet, sexy, and holy-hell-protective.
I loved his strength. The gentleness he treated the heroine with ( most of the time -** wink wink**) and I loved how he loved her.
The story is a fast read, but packed with twists and turns. It is part of a series, but I read as a standalone and had no problems except one. Now I want to read the rest of the series!

Finished it in 2-3 hours, cost me $3.99+ tax. Not bad. Don't know if I'd keep paying for more books by this author, maybe if I need a book that is 50-60% sex (which happens sometimes - just in the mood).

That's what this is: 50-60% sex, probably more. There is some suspense - has to be, with the woman being the victim of a serial killer and then the target of a copycat, etc. But, not as much as there could be to really keep you on the edge of your seat. The suspense merely created opportunities for the H to whisk the h away, for them to get "close" and work out their mutual attraction.

It got repetitive sometimes, but the writing isn't bad. It's not brilliant - I certainly didn't feel the need to read every word. I didn't really care about side characters either - not a whole lot of development there, other than to tee up other couples in other books.

It was mostly focused on the MC's relationship, which is fine. And a whole lot of sex. Which is also fine.

But in the end, all that taken together equates to a book that's good for a certain mood, but not one that would ever stay in my mind or that I would ever think of re-reading.

It was good enough that I didn't totally regret spending the $ to read it.

The best King story yet❣️

Van is working a job, while Hunter is in prison, trying to keep their new company afloat. When on this particular job, Van notices a woman who lives in the building - London, he can’t help but notice her. When he hears her scream through his surveillance equipment, he rushes in and saves her from a serial killer. He walks away after her recovery, convinced he’s not the man for her.

Two years later, London is struggling to deal with her anxiety and events that occurred two years previously, but she’s got the same feelings as what happened to her before....she feels she’s being watched. After trying the usual avenues for help, she finally caves and goes to the one man who makes her feel safe....Van😀

This book literally sucked me in like a vacuum. I was held enthralled right up until the end and couldn’t stop reading. Van and London are now absolutely my favourite couple, they have both been through so much and have persevered to overcome their demons. This series and book is definitely not to be missed.

Thank you to Sherilee for my advanced copy for which I leave my honest review and express my sadness for the fact that this is the end of another fantastic series😍💔😢

I have been waiting SO long for Van King's book and could not jump on his story fast enough. Van and London were so deliciously sexy and their story was one that had me consumed from the beginning.

After rescuing and saving London Rivera from the hands of a serial killer two years ago, a copycat killer is now on the loose and is targeting London. Faced with saving the only girl that has his protective instincts roaring in rage, Van never thought he would see the woman with the power to bring him to his knees again. But with a killer on the loose, hot chemistry that can't be denied and powerful emotions between them, this story had me flipping the pages as fast as I could turn them.

I really enjoyed this story! I loved the glimpses we got of Van in the other books in the Lawless Kings series but I craved an in-depth view of him and couldn't wait to meet the woman that would catch this powerful and dangerous man. In addition, his protectiveness was so sexy and their connection just as fiery. Likewise, I loved London because she was strong and sassy even when faced with a traumatic past and  a crippling anxiety disorder. She was the sweet to his ruthless and when combined together, they were a perfect match.

Overall, this story was so delicious and sexy af. I seriously can not wait for more from this author in the future as she NEVER disappoints. Bravo! 4.5 stars! ~Ratula

No review since i have a shit ton of work and i barely have time to read (le sigh).

But I'll tell you this: the chemistry between Van and London was 🔥🔥🔥.

And I would've given it 5 stars if some of London's decisions weren't so frustrating.

And if the women from the other books who were of course present in this one, weren't so superficial, so freaking immature and so sex obsessed.

Like, i'm sorry, but they are grown ass women. We do talk about other things than shagging.
Make us act our own age, for crying out loud!!!

But other than this, I really loved it.

Especially that twist at the end. 🙌👌

Highly recommend!!!

From the moment he came to her rescue he knew that there was something there brewing between them, but he also knew he wasn't the right man for her, she was just too innocent for the likes of him. So, he did what he thought was right and helped her through the trauma that followed after her attack, and then split when he figured she was well enough to go at things on her own. It hurt too much to be around her, knowing he could never have her, or touch her the way he craved.

But now she has come crashing back into his life, once again in danger, and once again needing his help. But this time things are going to be different. This time he plans on not letting her slip away... he will finally give into his heart, and lay claim to London Rivera.

Within the pages of Merciless King lies a story that will torture your heart, play on your emotions, and leave your knees weak. This series quickly became a favorite of mine after reading the first installment Shattered King, and with each book that has followed I have fell even more in love with it. And just as before I find myself completely mesmerized by Ms. Gray's perfectly crafted characters and words, this story was nothing short of AMAZING! I loved this coupling, their gritty, heart-wrenching story rendered me useless, once I got started I on it just couldn't bring myself to part ways with them. If you like suspenseful, dark, erotic tales then I highly suggest you check this series out, it's stories are beautifully penned, and it's characters are unforgettable!

I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion.

Book Name/Series: Merciless King (Lawless Kings #5)
Author: Sherilee Gray
Standalone?: Can be read as a standalone, but includes characters from other books.

3 Stars

Summary of the Storyline: London is the owner of a flower shop and has a social anxiety disorder. She was almost killed by a serial killer in her own apartment, and had it not been for a private investigator being in the right place at the right time, she would have died. Van killed her attacker and saved her life. However, he left after her hospital stay and she hasn’t seen him since. 2 years later she’s still thinking about him, but she’s resigned to never seeing him again. But when she starts feeling like she’s being followed and the police can’t help, she decides to go to him for help.

Van had never wanted someone as much as he wanted London, which was exactly why he stayed away for 2 years. When she shows up in his office asking for help, he’s terrified he won’t be able to resist her, so he makes the mistake of turning her away. However, when she’s assaulted in her shop by someone trying to emulate the serial killer that tried to kill her 2 years prior, he’s willing to do anything to protect her. He convinces her to come stay with him until they can figure out who the copycat is. Having her in his space is making it incredibly difficult to not give in to his feelings, but he’s convinced that she deserves better than him.

My Opinion: Overall this was an okay book. The story was interesting enough, and I liked the characters for the most part. I do think that the storyline felt a little bit disjointed at times or didn’t flow very well. There were also parts that were quite repetitive.

Hero: 3/5. I liked Van but he also annoyed me at times. He was super protective and possessive of London and had some really sweet moments with her. However, I really hated that he ignored her concerns when she first came to him because of his own feelings. I’m also unclear about whether he was celibate during the 2-year separation.
Heroine: 4/5. I really liked London. She was shy, awkward and had low self-esteem and I honestly found her really endearing. She had some moments where she got to go after what she wanted and show some courage though. It broke my heart when she didn’t think Van wanted her. However, I do think she was a little too oblivious at times.

POV: 1st person dual POV (London and Van).

Push/Pull:

Sadness: 2/5.

Explicit Sex and Heat Level: Yes. 4/5.

OW (Other Woman)/OM (Other Man) Drama: Yes.

Separation:

Cheating: No.

Closure/Ending: HEA, with an epilogue 6 months into the future.

MERCILESS KING (Lawless Kings #5) by Sherilee Gray

4 stars

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date April 12, 2019

No, I’ll welcome it and beg for more

••••••••••••

REVIEW: MERCILESS KING is the fifth and final instalment in Sherilee Gray’s contemporary, adult LAWLESS KINGS erotic, romantic suspense series focusing on the men and women who work for the King Agency doing personal protection and security, private investigation (corporate and domestic), high-risk fugitive recovery, missing persons and kidnapping investigations. This is eldest King brother and security specialist Van King, and florist London Rivera.

Told from dual first person points of view (Van and London) MERCILESS KING follows in the aftermath of an attack that left our heroine close to death. Two years earlier, while on stake out for another case, Van King saved the life of London Rivera when a serial killer targeted our story line heroine. Fast forward to present day wherein a copycat killer has set his sights on London Rivera, a killer who has vowed to finish the job. Desperate for help when the police are unable to prove her theory, London approaches the King Agency in an effort to hire the man she never forgot. Enter Van King, the man with whom London will fall in love. What ensues is the building relationship and romance between London and Van, and the potential fall-out as Van pushes London out of his life and directly into the direct line of fire.

Van King has never forgotten about the woman that had called to his heart but Van doesn’t believe in happily ever afters especially for someone like himself. London Rivera struggles with what was and what may never be but threats against our story line heroine find London facing the fight of her life.

The relationship between London and Van is one of immediate attraction but Van knew London needed time to heal. Having ‘stalked’ our heroine from afar, Van believes he is unworthy of London’s love when our heroine demands more than his protection and security. Tormented and torn Van knows his time with London comes with a deadline. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to Detective Connor Daniels, a man who takes a personal interest in London’s safety. The colorful secondary and supporting characters include the previous story line couples: Van’s brother Hunter and his wife Lulu, as well as fellow partners and security specialists Sunny and Zeke, Ruby and Neco, Willa and Jude; London’s friend and co-worker Erin. The requisite evil has many faces.

MERCILESS KING is a story of family, obsession, vengeance and love. The premise is captivating and energetic; the characters are dynamic ; the romance is seductive and hot. MERCILESS KINGS is an emotional final instalment in the Lawless Kings romantic suspense series.

Like the rest of the King Agency men, Van is deadly and dangerous, dark and brooding. Still, London is extremely drawn to him. Okay, so some of her adoration could be due to the fact that he saved her life, and helped her through the immediate aftermath of a traumatic event. But, come on, there's a lot there to love anyway! Not only is he physically attractive as described, he's also successful, intelligent, dedicated and protective to a fault.

Van, however, is also something of an idiot. He doesn't think that he's good enough for London or that he'll be good for her, so he keeps away from her for a very long time and pushes her away at nearly every turn. Which pissed me off because it upset her so often and made her feel as though she wasn't worth his love and affection. So much so that when he changes his tune on that score, it takes her quite awhile to actually believe the truth of it.

London is a bit different than most of the other heroines of this series. For one thing, she suffers from more than a little society anxiety, so much so that it's nearly debilitating, actually. Certainly, the events leading up to the current action don't help any in that regard. It would definitely be more than a little disconcerting to have not just one but multiple serial killers targeting you. Still, London turns out to be incredibly strong emotionally, and even manages to help save herself on a couple of occasions.

There are several interactions with characters from previous books in the series that are great. It's always wonderful to see the other members of their close-knit group and learn how they are doing as time goes by.

The twists and turns of the intrigue of this novel are even more intense than in some of the prior volumes, and that's saying quite a bit. It makes for a lot of mystery and excitement. Although I'm personally mostly here for the romance, this is definitely a good suspenseful thriller. Thanksfully, all is eventually resolved and this couple are finally able to get their happily-ever-after. While I am sad to see the last of the King Agency, this is a wonderful ending to an exceptional series!

I received a free eBook copy of this title from the author, and have willingly provided an honest review.

DNF. Writing is terrible, loads of spelling mistakes and the mmc is practically forced into a relationship.

DNF. I tried I really did. At times it was quite gripping then it went off the rails again. Van King (Did the author really name her ‘hero’ that?) is the joint owner of a security company with his brother. When he’s staking out the apartments that London lives in as they’re watching her neighbour, he hears her being attacked. Van saves her from a serial killer, stays with her for a few weeks then leaves her on her own. FOR TWO YEARS! He’s supposedly obsessed with London but he thinks he’s too dark for her. Whatever that means! 😡

Two years later London is being targeted again and Van steps up again but turns her down when she begs him to have s*x with her. When they eventually get together it feels like she forced him into it. She practically forced him to have s*x the first time and it’s ridiculous and it felt really cringy. This man who claims to care about her but won’t have a relationship with her, but wont let his friend date her either! Sorry he’s a d*ck. He’s all sweet and kind to her then dumps her at her apartment and says goodbye. 😡😡😡

Then there’s the danger that she’s in that felt like a big mess. Not sure how many killers she’s got after her but it’s silly. London has serious issues with men, and it’s depressing. She can’t hardly talk to men and finds them too intimidating to even look at. She doesn’t have any friends or family, has no social life and is a depressing character to read about.

The mistakes;
🔵 I get that it’s not the first book but it says it’s a stand alone. It’s not! So I don’t know who everyone is.
🔵 What was Van doing the night that he saved her? It never explains it.
🔵 How old are they both?
🔵 What made London so terrified of men?
🔵 Where is London’s family?
🔵 Was it Londons upbringing that made her so antisocial?
🔵 Was the first serial killer her neighbour?
🔵 No one has any conversations with anyone. It’s so bizarre. Van works with his brother Hunter yet Hunter is never mentioned. Not once.
🔵 Then there’s the spelling mistakes. Oh boy they’re almost constant throughout the book. He instead of the, missing words, and whole sentences that don’t make any sense.

Sorry hated it. Could have been really good but isn’t. Nothing makes any sense.

Merciless King is the 5th book in this series and although can be a standalone, there are several characters from the other books in the series that appear. It can be confusing to figure out who is who if you have not read the rest of the series (which I had not). This is a mystery/romance that centers around, London, who two years ago was attacked and almost killed by a serial killer. Van is the man who saved her life and has been the center of her fantasies ever since. Van King killed a man and saved her life and she is forever grateful and in love with him.

Van King is a private investigator who will stop at nothing to bring the bad guy to justice. His past has dictated his future and he believes he is not capable of love due to the violence he was surrounded by in his adolescent life. He has thought about London many times since he was in the right place at the right time when he encountered her for the first time. After he saved her, he never anticipated seeing her again. Now two years later a copycat serial killer wants to finish what was started two years ago. He can't let anyone hurt her and is determined to keep her safe.

Van rushes to London's aid for a second time and shows her a side of him that not many get to see, the true man behind the tough facade. He is protective, possessive and merciless, especially when it comes to London and her safety. London is so shy and introverted that he believes she is afraid of him, but she has secretly loved him since he saved her life and is just outright uncomfortable around men. This story takes us through their journey of self-discovery and love.

Overall I enjoyed this story, but I will say that something was missing for me. Van was all broody and protective, and at times I loved it, but it made it hard to believe the genuineness of his softer actions towards London. She was so shy and introverted that some of the scenes were awkward, hard to believe and relate to. They eventually find their way together and I loved that, but there were times it was hard to connect with them. There are great secondary characters, a good storyline, mystery, romance and plenty of sexy time. ⭐⭐⭐

I really really wanted to like this book because I've always liked Van's character but it just fell flat and one of the main reasons was the character of London. Her character annoyed me to no end. Maybe it’s because I’ve never met a person with social anxiety but my goodness she was so damn awkward. She gave up and gave in way too easily in situations, I couldnt understand where this all stemmed from. Besides the London character, this book seemed to be missing a lot of important details and let me count the ways:
1. We were never given a clear picture of London's background. Where did she come from, she briefly touched on her dad being a sailor and leaving her money to open her shop. Where is the rest of her family, her mother, somebody, anybody? Did a stork leave her on a doorstep, I was confused.
2.If she was so used to taking care of herself when she was younger because her dad was a sailor, wouldn’t she have been more confident than she really was. Her being so self sufficient at an early age should have caused her to be more self-assured and independent.
3. How did she learn to run a business if she was so shy and I’m assuming never attended school. So many unanswered questions and very disappointed in this latest installment of this series.
4. Van talked about how he liked it rough and such, and I was waiting on such a scene but we got NADA, ZILCH.

In addition, I noticed some grammatical errors such as LAPD instead of the NYPD and other minor things. If Connor gets a book I wouldn't mind giving it a try but they have to flesh out his character some more.

----------SUMMARY----------
Van(H) is a private investigator. When he has to keep an eye on a suspect, he notices his neighbour London(h). Van is attracted to her appearance and sweet demeanour. When London is attacked at her own home by a serial killer, Van saves her. 2 years go by and London is getting stalked again. She knows who she will turn to for help. The same man who's been on her mind for 2 years, Van.

----------COMMENTARY----------
I really liked the characters of both the MC's.
London was sweet and shy. She has social anxiety and this author did an excellent job in describing her feelings during any social contact. The growth of the h during this book was written in a realistic manner. With all the things the h has been through in the past. It was normal how she reacted to certain situations.
The H on the other hand is little bit more intense and mysterious. His feelings for the h were clear but he kept his past hidden from her.
This book had a great plot with plenty of romance.

I'm sitting down writing this review after seconds of just putting the book down and I forgot the main character's name. I can remember Van, but hers? Nope!

Ok, looked it up and London. London isn't a character who is TSTL, but you'll feel that vibe from her. In fact, there's a whole part about her trusting her instincts which I really like (and the men being useless!), so she's not making bad calls. But we have Van is staring her her/her mouth, and she's like'oh, is there food on my face?' one time and 'oh, do I have dirt on my chin?' another and I groan loudly and want to throw the book out the window but that's overdramatic, so I drop it on the couch. 'Oh, the two men that are interested in me are chatting about me, while I stand here in just his t-shirt, whatever could it be about?'

Him: I'm going to stay by your side until this killer is put away. Go pack your stuff. Her: 'oh, you're sending me away? ok, :'('

Actually a TSTL one for both.

Anyway, the friendship between the women was great.

⭐️⭐️

This made me sad; such a disappointment. It started out quite good and then it continues somewhat interesting but they hit this relationship high quite early and nothing really exciting or interesting happened afterwards. Yeah, she was in a lot of different scary situations but I got kind of bored. She was saved, then suddenly not, then saved again but oh no, here’s trouble again. Same goes with their relationship. They had this slow buildup, but one day they just jumped right in and nothing really happened after that. They just remained to people having sex. No deep connections or talks, no real time getting to know each other. Nothing really developed.

There is nothing wrong with the writing, but the story fell flat. The characters lacked depth and were not so easy to get invested in as they never really change or evolved. The backstory of both of them and the things they went through were serious enough to have some kind of effect on them, but neither of them were any different from the first pages to the last.

Spoiler alert!

Van is doing surveillance on London's building and though he's never met her, he sees her pass by every night and he wants her. It just so happens that he's able to rescue her from a serial killer one night and he stays by her side. She's more or less in love (as is he, but he's trying to stay away from her own good) but he walks out of her life. A year later, London is being stalked by someone and goes to Van for help. He doesn't believe her, but goes hardcore protector mode after she's attacked again. He becomes her shadow, but refuses to let things get sexual/romantic, thinking to protect her from him. London though, doesn't want to be protected. She wants Van.

Hmmm. This was definitely my favorite of the series. I'm thinking it has to do something with how different London is from the rest of the heroines in this series. She's strong in her own way, but she's not feisty, confident or even a bad ass fighter. She's reserved, a bit insecure and pretty frightened most of the time. She was actually borderline irritating with her not being able to stand up for herself or speak for herself most of the time, but it gradually grew on me as I watched her become a bit more assertive. More than any others it felt like this character actually grew with the story. Van is okay. He does the noble protector thing and tries to stay away from the heroine, which I don't have a problem with really. It's when he's doing the noble thing but won't let her move on with her life, that I have a problem with. She flirts with the possibility of a relationship with another guy when Van rejects her again and he's jealous and possessive when he finds out. That's not cool dude. If you don't want her, let her move on to someone else. But he's all alpha and gruff without really being an asshole, so I still liked him.
