In The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump, Bandy X. Lee gathers together a diverse group of psychologists and mental health professionals to explore the dangers Trump’s speech and behavior pose for democracy and our survival. In doing so the book explores the ethical concerns of publicly speaking out regarding the mental health of a public figure. Do mental health professionals have a duty to warn the public about the unstable behavior of a person in power? This volume explores the competing obligations of clinical that of maintaining doctor-patient confidentiality and the duty to warn of impending harm to a third-party. While views on the ethical considerations vary from essay to essay, all professionals expressed their concern over Trump’s erratic behavior, impulsivity, narcissism, and lack of empathy. But ultimately, Lee leaves it up to us decide about Trump’s mental health, asking us to think critically about his behavior and words, and to speak up if we are concerned.
