Some people were born to be princesses or queens, others were meant to be warriors.
Emerald grew up just like any other mortal woman, though she never felt she truly belonged. Secretly, she longed for more of something that she could not identify. When the Elven King shows up at her front door, Emerald begins to hope that all her dreams just might come true, but instead, a nightmare unfolds. Dragged unwillingly into the Elven Realm, Emerald discovers that nothing is as it seems. Nothing and no one can be trusted. Thrust into a world of savagery and constant bloodshed, Emerald finds peace and happiness in unlikely places. When war threatens the realms and traitors are exposed, Emerald must learn to stand on her own and fight for her life and those who she has come to hold dear.

Prepare to be immersed in a world full of elves, far and mortals. Lands ruled by kings, prejudice and betrayal run rampant. Follow Emerald as she is immersed in a new world and has to learn and adapt to new customs. Kingdom of Ruin is full of surprises and definitely has an interesting storyline. I'm going to rate this book with 3.5 stars. It was a nice read but things were just a little too easy for the characters, in my opinion. It's an action packed read full of adventures so buy it and enjoy.
Empowering. Magical. Brutal. Sexy. Bianca Mckay delivers an epic adventure with her debut novel, Kingdom of Ruin! Following three realms; Elven, Fae, Mortal, readers will be immersed in their history and their challenges to co-exist. With strong leading roles—filled by the multifaceted Elven King and Queen—this is a story that any folklore fan is sure to love. And the ending?? SO good. I am ready for book two!
I thoroughly enjoyed this debut book by Bianca McKay. You find yourself immersed into a fantasy world filled with mortals and magical creatures. The characters are dynamic and the storyline is engaging.
Emerald has always felt like she didn't fit with her family and the people of Duine. A visit from The Elven King, Lord of Death, Ecaeris Valanor changes her life forever. Her father sacrifices her to keep himself, his wife, and son safe. Emerald's journey of discovery pushes her to do things she never thought she would be capable of. The twists and turns will test her commitment to the Elven King and his people. The secrets, lies, betrayal and revenge will keep you captivated until the very end. This is a five star must read that will have you anxiously awaiting book two.
Kingdom of Ruin was a pleasant surprise. It took me a few days of getting into it (had other stuff going on) but once I sat down and started to read it uninterrupted I found that I couldn’t put it down. I really enjoyed Emerald. She was an enjoyable female lead and a very strong female character.
I love fantasy novels with great world building and interesting and complex characters. I especially love fantasy novels that have elves, fairies and mystical beings and Kingdom of Ruin had all of this. The reason I only gave it 4 stars (actually I give it 4.5 stars) is that the writing was a little choppy and our main lovers could of spent a little more time getting to know each other BUT I’m glad we didn’t have to spend chapters (or book after book) reading why the our main male lead was battling his feelings and undeniable connection to our kick ass female lead.
I understand that this is the authors’s first novel and it was a great first novel. Now, my last complaint, I needed book two, like yesterday 😜.
I struggled a lot with this story. It's not poorly written from a grammar perspective, not does it have a bad premise. However, it suffers from a lot of exposition -- there's too much telling and not enough showing. It makes the emotional components of the story fall flat. I had a hard time buying into any of it because it inched along as if someone were narrating it and because the actions taken were extreme without the emotion to back them up. For exqmole, her bad behavior leads to hate and abandonment, but we get no experience of this behavior? Makes it hard to swallow that they have up on a child they raised almost overnight.I
Also, the love interest hardly spends any time with her, so it's hard to see that as a relationship. Further, she's naturally gifted and good at everything once in her correct realm, which makes her uninteresting as a character.
Extraordinary tale set upon the fantasy realm of Elves, Fae, Selkie and just about many more species of the magical realm. Emerald is the most courageous, strong and independent characters of have read about and I applaud her every personality. The perfect counterpart to Ecaeris. Talk about a power couple! This world had me so pulled in and enchanted by its beauty and darkness that I could not put it down. I felt as I could feel every emotion set forth by the characters and it makes this a truly great read. The whole journey for the elven race is remarkable and I cannot wait until the rest of the series is written. I don't want to give any spoilers I will leave it up to you to read and decide for yourselves but I tell you, you will not be dissatisfied or disappointed. Thank you Bianca for such a magically epic story.
Beautifully written fantasy! Ms McKay has given a new twist to the well known elf and fae races as well as weaved a tale of love, sacrifice and acceptance. While the story feels slow to start it is always building towards the rise of a Queen. In Emerald we find bits of ourselves, longing for a place to belong, acceptance and finding out how strong she can be. In her lover we find what all long for; the protectiveness of a mate who is also willing to let his mate shine. While the epilogue had a predictable moment for me there were pleasant surprises throughout the story and the use of sight in some of the characters only helped to foreshadow those surprises in pleasant ways. I cannot wait for the next book. I am hooked on the Three Kingdoms!
Firstly, I must warn readers that this book is intended for 18+years of age and up only. There is an attempted rape scene, abuse towards women, abuse towards children, intense battle sequences, harsh language and graphic violence. I highly recommend reading only if you are of age.
A strangely beautiful, lyrical tale, this is the story of the Lord of Death the Elven King Ecaeris and the people of Duine. In Duine, there is a man named Frederick and his wife Lillian and their son Henry, along with their daughter Emerald. Emerald is a child of darkness, though tries hard to like the sunshine, and light, and flowers and things that most people of Duine like. She is a strange, unnatural person that most fear and shun, especially after her outburst in the local church when she asks the Priest what he’s using the money donations from the already incredibly poor people are for.
The story is lyrical, enchanting, and full of mystical magic that is fascinating to read. I read through the book within a couple of days, and really liked the character of Emerald. I did find that Ecaeris was a bit of an ass, though he had his moments at times. He was the most powerful figure in the book, knowing exactly when mortals die, and could do all kinds of powerful sorts of magic. Pulled to Emerald’s beauty, he gladly takes her from her father and pulls her towards his home.
The story flows well, and the characters are incredibly lifelike. I really enjoyed Emerald’s character the most, sympathizing with her and her trials during her time at Duine. The writing was rather good, the storyline felt original, and I sincerely hope that there will be a book two to look forward to in the future.
The only downside was the cliffhanger ending of Azariah. The ending was intense, and left dark tones for the hopeful sequel of Kingdom of Ruin.
In the end, I’m giving this book 5/5 stars for an entertaining, magical couple of afternoons in a world that was enchanting and unique, despite also being full of violence.
This is a fantastic read and a great beginning to a new series. The non stop twists and turns will not disappoint. I was hooked from start to finish. I loved the storyline and how everything came together. The way Emerald grew into her own becoming a fierce, strong, and powerful woman. The Elvin King with his sinister ways and how he grew to change. The realms of the different world's and how somehow all connected was a fantastic way to intertwine the human world with the Fae. I loved the idea of fate and the different types of magic that each possessed and contributed. Then the ending all I can say is wow it totally blew my mind and I can't wait to read the next book.
Let me start off with I’m not a big reader of PNR, but let me tell you this, this book has definitely changed my mind!! The story of Emerald and Ecaeris is incredible. The detail that went into this book to describe the characters looks, their emotions, their chemistry is uncanny. Emerald grew up feeling different from her family but didn’t know why. Until one day a mysterious man named Ecaeris shows up and completely changes her world! There are so many facets and emotions to this story that I didn’t want to put this book down! I’m hoping and praying that this story continues as I am completely enthralled by this book. If you are like me and was unsure if you would enjoy this book, trust me, you will love it!! A truly amazing read!
I wanted so much to like this book, but I just couldnt get into it. I love the premise of the book, but it just doesn't keep me interested. As another commenter stated: there's too much telling and not enough showing. Everything just sort of happened and there was no explanation on how it occurred. The narration switched points of view nonstop, which I dont tend to like, but it was a smooth transition for the most part. The so called love interests are rarely around each other, and when they are, they're automatically smitten. There's nothing there other than the fact that they're "mates" and that's just how it's meant to be. Talk about insta-love. Yuck.
I have to admit this is the first time for me to read a fantasy book. My thoughts on this book are Superb! From the beginning this story grabbed me with the Lord of Death. Emerald was my favorite in this book. I love the battles, the romance, the deceit, their bonding to one another. I loved the magic they have. The abuse is horrid but I like how they are saved. I am looking forward to more of this story as it was a cliff hanger at the end. I gave this book 5 Stars because I totally loved it. Thanks Bianca
Loved this story about Emerald and her finding out who is she and where she came from. I genuinely loved having all the back story giving this character more depth than normal, it also gave me understanding of the places and people that would be in this story. I adore Emerald and can not wait to read more into this series, I freaking love fanasty/paranormal and this author has me anxiously awaiting more.
This was the first book I’ve read by this author and I must say I was utterly surprised I was thrust in to the fae / elves world the story was easy and full of life the characters where likeable had depth and not a single winger in sight I found myself loosing sleep as I kept on turning the pages and wanting the next book straight after I finished it deffo keeping an eye on this author one of my new favs
I couldn’t put this book down. I’m so glad that Emerald found her true home and her mate. I had no trouble following this story or seeing the images of the places and emotions the writer was trying to create. The way she describes everything in detail, right down to the beauty of the snow. Looking forward to the next book in this series!
Loved the book! This book was beautifully written to suck you into the characters ' realms. There are some characters that you'll love to hate and others that you can't help to love. Great job on this book Bianca! I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
This is the first read from this author. I have never read any from this genre before so I was skeptical. It took me a few to get into it, but once I did, WOW! I did not want to put it down. So much I was disappointed, when I got to the end. It captured my attention so much, I never realized I was at the end. I definitely recommend this to anyone. Give it a try
I really enjoyed this book! I admired Emerald’s assertive character and her journey to become a strong leader. The story is wonderfully intricate from the conflict between the three realms to the internal conflicts of the main characters. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
Bianca McKay has a way of drawing the reader in and doesn't let go from the great world building to the magic to the battles she makes you feel there and that you are vested in her main characters and want them to succeed . So do yourself a favor and pick this up just be prepared to buy the rest of the series 😀😀😀😀
If you want a great read that will wrap you up in itself and not let you go until it has had it's way with you, buy this!! I can not stress enough that you need to make time to read this book! You can not read a little and set it aside! You must read it all the way through for full effect! Plus have you seen that cover? Beautiful!
What a great find! I was looking for a good paranormal read and stumbled across this book. Can’t wait for the next book. I believe it will follow a new couple but continue on with the plot in the series.
This book had an awesome story line. I loved the characters, and how everything wasn't the way it seemed. Things were explained nicely, and somethings were just down right sad for the main female lead. Can't wait to read more by this author. Great start to what's sure to be an awesome series.
Wow. Incredibly refreshing and page turning cannot put the book down sort. The world, characters, the emotions flowing off the page. Cannot wait for the next book. Truly great work.
Wow! What a gripping tale that held me captivated from the beginning! I loved experiencing Emerald's journey as she accepted her fate and learned to be the warrior she was destined to be. Would highly recommend this book to others!
This is the first time I have read anything from these author. I thought it was well written and the words ran smoothly. I look forward to reading more books by these author.
An interesting story to read as I usually don't read this genre. Truly remarkable plotline was easy to follow and kept my attention. The characters were impressively written.
