Overall, my impression of Growing was absolutely lovely. A collection of poems that paints a beautiful picture of a girl growing into a young woman, an adult, and then a mother. This book made me feel like I had grown up right alongside El Holly as she shared all of these moments with me. These poems are thoughtful, at times sorrowful and humorous, and overall left me with a heartwarming glow.

Beautiful.
Growing is an anthology of poetry that tackles life from a unique perspective, spanning from they author’s preteen years right up to her current life. At times turbulent, at others, jubilant, this off-the-beaten-path anthology is the rare collection that speaks to anyone and everyone who has lived a life, no matter the length. The appeal of the author lies in the structuring and wording of the poems - from beginning to very end, the author brings a vivid yet simple and relatable picture to life. In the ‘childhood’ era, I found myself effortlessly picturing a young girl in her room, writing away in a spiral notebook. That image stayed with me through each page; the author growing and aging, as a writer as well as a human, before my eyes. The authors emotions and passions are complex and at times intense, but even the earliest poems ring with clarity that lasts throughout the entire anthology. The author is never difficult to understand - in fact, quite the opposite. E.L Holly is one in a small cluster of rare authors who manage to somehow be every human being on the planet all at once. If you are young, you will relate. If you are old, you will relate. If you have experienced loss of any kind, you will relate. If you are grateful, joyful, confused, heartbroken, you will relate. E.L. Holly will put feelings you never knew you had into, at times painfully-close-to-home, words.
Highly recommend.
