Sometimes fairytales blossom from the poorest of circumstances. But… more often than not, legends are forged from the blood, sweat, and tears of things they can never speak of.
Chalice was born into exile. She doesn’t know anything about the world within the stone city, and there is no time to figure it out. With the warring and winter growing closer by the day, she is forced to find her way in the corrupt streets of Rochambeau.
A chance meeting leaves her enmeshed with a world of darkness and wealth. It’s the only welcome she finds. Now it is up to Chalice, to become the medieval mafia-like family’s tool… Or to climb their ladder and taste power and freedom for herself.

This story follows Chalice, a girl from outside of the gates of town through her experiences with one of the towns most prominent, and ruthless, families. Chalice was an interesting character. Both innocent and confident. Both meek and strong. I believe she will be a force to be reckoned with. The family is interesting. Some of them are evil, while others are caught in its web. Not everything is always as it seems either. Of the books by Tyranni Thomas that I have read, this is my favorite. I can't wait to see what happens next.
Chalice was just a poor, homeless girl, subsisting on the herbs and rare plants she could find while living in the forest. She would take her bounty into town to sell; hoping against hope to survive one more day... Until the fateful day she met Reverie...
Deception, intrigue, murder... Swirling malevolent intent... Evil stalks Chalice as she attempts to navigate her new life as the adopted daughter of the house Krypt
Twists and turns, threats, revelations, redemption? This book runs the gamut!
Expect lots of Whining Alcohol Drugs More whining Lack of backstory Manipulative bastards Weak characters TSTL people .... All the "kids" hate the family... Are sold off, beaten, etc yet they pretty much line back up and just go " please sir, can I have some more."
PS we get reminded a lot a woman who has has sex is dmged goods.. hurray....
The book just ended mid scene, overall not worth considering.
I could not even get through this book. There were so many inconsistencies, such as how Chalice knew the names of some characters without them being introduced. Also, the entire part that I read lacked any individual personalities to any of the characters. They all blended together in a mix of anxiety, despair, and anger. I was confused more than half of the time about what was actually going on. I do not recommend this book at all.
I really enjoyed this book, but was so sad when i got to the end with such a cliffhanger. Now I'll be waiting on the edge of my seat until the next installment in April. This book is dark and delicious and really leaves you craving more.
