How many more surface conversations over hazelnut lattes are we going to have before we can finally say out loud, “I’m actually not fine!”
If you feel plagued with insecurity and driven by fear, if you spend too much of your time comparing yourself to others but never quite measure up, if you crave genuine conversation without the fear of being judged for current struggles or past mistakes—if this is you, you’re not alone.
That voice that calls you a fraud? Yep, we have it, too. That voice You’re Un-Qualified; you will never be good enough. You’re Un-Gifted; other women are so much more talented than you will ever be, so why even try? You’re Un-Capable; your past is full of deep regrets. What will people think if they know the truth? You’re Un-Lovely; you should take your flaws and shrink back to the sidelines where you belong. In Courageously Uncomfortable, Lisa Goins calls us to step out of a life that’s comfortable and into the life God intended for you to live. She shares the journey from battered, broken, and insecure to forgiveness, acceptance of self, and trust in God’s plan. This is the journey we are all called to walk, together.
Staying trapped in a comfortable place of hiding the truth—whether it’s a past full of hurt, shame, and regret, or current difficult circumstances—is keeping us from accomplishing what God has placed us in this world to do. It’s time for us to learn the steps we can take to find our courage, face our fears, and show up as the beautiful women God intended us to be. If we are going to allow God to accomplish anything worthwhile through us, even the smallest of something, we might have to be (courageously) uncomfortable.
I love being surprised by a book. I was looking for inspiration, and I found it here. I love a good story and I read one here. The author is a woman socialized to be inauthentic, who awakens and decides to do what is necessary to live authentically. She sees this process not just as personal growth, but as integral to becoming part of Jesus' Kingdom of God, where like-minded believers surrender their life to God/Jesus and live in courageous relationship with each other feeling like they belong. She speaks to women who feel they never quite measure up or fit in, who struggle and fear being judged, and who feel they have nothing to offer their community. She shares anecdotes from her childhood facing alcoholism and abuse before graduating college to become a pastor's wife and raise four children. Her writing expresses her illustrations from the Bible and the incidents from her life with humor and grace, making her wisdom easy to identify with and be encouraged by. The line which summarizes her message for me is, "You can manage your image or you can manage your relationship with Jesus and allow His image to shine through." I recommend this book to every woman seeking inspiration "when the real woman you want to be is on the other side of fear". This book is a clearly written testament to the supportive infectiousness and the miraculous effects of courage.
Lisa gives us a transparent and heartfelt look at the life of a pastor’s wife—struggles and triumphs written with insight and a dose of humor. There is a lesson to be learned from each of the four women in the lineage of Jesus, and I found this book to be informative and helpful. Each topic had me examining myself, particularly the following two quotes: “What if Rahab’s inability to get beyond her messy past kept her focused on herself and therefore condemned not only her life but those of her entire family to death? What if...I don’t like the ‘what if’ game. I would rather be courageously uncomfortable and have a lot of oops in my life that remain comfortable and constantly wonder ‘what if?’” “Someone somewhere is going to be grateful you made a way instead of making an excuse.” Wow! I can mess up and still be of use to God. A great reminder that when we take our eyes off ourselves and how we feel—become “Courageously Uncomfortable” God is waiting and prepared to move us into His perfect plan for our lives. This book was encouraging yet pointed and I highly recommend it. This book was provided courtesy of the author through Interviews & Reviews.
Fans of Just Open the Door by Jen Schmidt will likely enjoy Courageously Uncomfortable - they have a similar vibe and are both great reads.
While Just Open the Door specifically focuses on hospitality, Courageously Uncomfortable focuses on being ourselves, and letting God work through us despite our flaws.
Both books are inspiring, and this book in particular is a great study on four women of Jesus' lineage, all of whom we can learn from and be encouraged by.
I highly recommend this book to Christian women who are plastering on a smile each day and pretending they are fine.
Tapping into a woman's soul trapped in fear can be a daunting process, but Lisa J. Goins sure does bring light to this darkness giving hope through Christ with real-life applications.
As a man with a wife facing her struggles as she walks the path of becoming more and more of a courageous woman, this book has given me insight helping me to take her hand walking beside her sharing in the journey.
Excellent and highly recommend for any woman wanting to be unafraid of herself and for her husband wishing to support his queen, his first lady, his best friend along the way.
Lisa J. Goins book is courageously great! She communicates the love and grace of God with empathy and wisdom. Packed with humor that serves to point the reader to God. Lisa encourages all women to know they are loved by God. She challenges us to step out and to live Courageously Uncomfortable lives as we pursue all God has for us. This would be a great Small group Bible study. Thank you Lisa for being brave and writing this book.
Lisa Goins shares honestly her own journey out of brokenness and fear into fullness. Through her own story and the stories of women in Scripture, she invites us to step out of safety and into the uncomfortable place of growth, fruitfulness, and joy. Lisa writes beautifully and vulnerably. This book is a powerful invitation to live more courageously uncomfortable.
Excellent! Reading this book was like talking to a friend who is there right when you need her. Lisa's writing is relatable and encouraging for women in each stage of life to become the authentic person God designed them to be.
Lisa came and spoke at our church a few weeks ago, and what a powerful message she brought. I had to have her book! It made me laugh, cry, smile, and most of all, I was inspired to work on coming out of my comfort zone for myself and my squad.
Lisa writes in a way that is very raw and relatable. I appreciated her vulnerability. Because she is relatable, I got more from this book than I have from this genre in awhile. 💕
