A distinctive book that succinctly defines insect metamorphosis in an attractive, well-organized format. Each stage is thoroughly explained step-by-step in the simple, clearly written text, while full-color photographs of stunning clarity draw readers in and take them through the process . . .--School Library Journal, starred review. 1990 Outstanding Children's Trade Book in the Field of Science.
This is a true informational-text book. With its captions, table of contents, and index; this book makes it an easy read to follow. It describes the different stages of metamorphosis in a step by step manner. The vivid pictures help the reader to further understand this process. In the classroom, I would try to get a butterfly habitat so children could see the metamorphosis up close and personal. They could keep a science journal, tracking all the data to record what they observe on a daily/ weekly basis. Students can also make their own butterfly stories relating to metamorphosis.
3) Summary: This book offers loads of information regarding different insects such as cicadas, mosquitoes, and a large emphasis on butterflies/caterpillars. It's packed with information and pictures of each life stage to represent the appearance of the insect.
4) Review: I would definitely include this book in my classroom. I felt that it was very informative, provides lots of information without overloading. I even learned a few facts that I did not previously know. Students that really enjoy the environment may like this book.
5) In Class use: -Information on a bug/insect unit -Can be included with a weather unit -Can read before taking a nature walk with the children and have them look out for these types of insects -Can read after reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar
1) no awards 2) Ages 7-10 3) Insect Metamorphosis is about how different insects become adults through stages. The book thoroughly explains each stage of an insects life. The book also explain an insects nest that are relevant to bees, wasps, ant, termites, etc. 4) I think this is a great book to relate to an insect theme for a young classroom. Teachers and students can create anchor charts of different stages of an insects life. Teachers can also teach children about insects that make their own nest that helps them with survival. 5) This book can be great in class for students to learn about insects and how they become adults through stages. A classroom can also hatch butterflies, so children can see the stages in real life.
