I used to think gold and silver investments were for fringe investors and eccentric conspiracy theorists. My thinking has been shifting.

This book introduced me to two key phenomena:

1. Asset prices fluctuate in relation to each other, but rarely permanently change in value. Precious metals aren’t always a “better” investment than stocks, for example; but a profit can be made off of one when it is undervalued vs. the other. Currently gold is priced well below its historical average against the Dow.

2. Since the Federal Reserve Bank was given the power to print unlimited dollars in the early 20th century, the price of gold has twice corrected upward so that the price of the United States gold supply matched the price of its currency (in the 1930s and in 1980). As confidence falls in the US dollar, Maloney believes this will happen again, which would bring the price of gold to nearly $7,000 in 2008 dollars. (Since then the Fed has dumped trillions more dollars into the economy.)

Maloney also points out that fiat currency (currency which is based on nothing but the command of a government) never survives forever, and buying power is shifted back to “real” money – gold and silver. Athens, Rome, and the Weimar Republic are all examples. When that happens, huge amounts of wealth are transferred to holders of gold and silver.

The book provides a rundown of the current economic crisis, likely future scenarios, methods of investing in gold and silver, and an introduction to the numismatics (collectors’) markets.

I found the book eye-opening, and I’d it highly to anyone who feels they don’t understand precious metals investing very well.

I'll not recommend this book to anyone, the problem with this book is 99% of times the author is talking about crash and fraud and fake coins and the how to store precious metals at home. No information about investing nothing at all.
Other thing is author lacks professional like comparing helicopter drop, waves of tsunami, storm etc etc. and the amount of information he shared regarding investing also shows that.
Only good thing is the history of money other than that the whole book is just a drag and boring.
He aslo has a YouTube channel, I'll recommend you to watch youtube videos instead of reading book because the same info is in book just dragged till more than 200 something pages, nothing new.

NOTE: If you're watching YouTube videos don't get carried away, because author try to create fearful situation by over stating it and making assumptions that are kinda scary and then tries to sell precious metals like gols and silver.
So don't get carried away, just be clam and take only necessary information.

Reads like a Nostradamus prophecy which unfortunately may well turn out to be true. And how catastrophic it would be for all of us.

While the metals may be the hottest ticket yet, unfortunately not everyone can really afford it. As one reviewer has mentioned, Maloney makes it sound so easy when it's not.

This is the gripe that I have with writers like Maloney. They make a complex topic like gold and silver investment so fascinatingly simple that when a simpleton like me wants to really get into it, I stumble at the deep knowledge required to actually make this work.

But it is a good book. It tells the history of money and the metals and how metals always wins.

While the final third does for the reader what the title portends, the first two-thirds provide a broad range of monetary history. So fascinating, I read this book twice. I'm not kidding.

11/14/09 Update:
I've now read this book three times.

**Guide to Investing in Gold and Silver: Everything You Need to Know to Profit from Precious Metals Now** by Michael Maloney is a comprehensive, beginner-friendly resource for understanding how and why to invest in precious metals. The book combines historical analysis, economic theory, and practical guidance, arguing that gold and silver are essential assets for preserving wealth—especially in times of economic instability and currency devaluation.

Key ideas and actionable strategies:

* **Precious Metals Are Real Money**

* Gold and silver have held value for thousands of years, unlike fiat currencies which can be inflated or devalued by governments.
* The book asserts that these metals serve as a hedge against inflation, economic collapse, and poor monetary policy.
* Action: Reframe precious metals not as speculative assets but as long-term stores of value.

* **Understand the History of Money and Currency**

* Maloney explains the difference between money (a store of value) and currency (a medium of exchange that can be manipulated).
* Throughout history, every fiat currency has eventually failed; gold and silver have remained reliable across civilizations.
* Action: Study monetary history to better anticipate future economic patterns and risks.

* **Economic Cycles and Wealth Transfer**

* The global economy moves in cycles of inflation, deflation, debt, and monetary expansion.
* Maloney identifies patterns where major economic transitions often lead to wealth transferring from those unprepared to those holding hard assets.
* Action: Position yourself before the next shift—accumulate gold and silver when they're undervalued.

* **Gold vs. Silver: Know the Difference**

* Gold is a more stable, higher-value metal often held by central banks and long-term investors.
* Silver is more volatile, has industrial uses, and tends to outperform gold in bull markets.
* Action: Allocate investments based on your risk tolerance—balance stability (gold) with growth potential (silver).

* **How to Buy Precious Metals Wisely**

* Purchase physical bullion (coins or bars), not collectibles or numismatic coins.
* Avoid high markups, middlemen, and scams—buy from reputable dealers.
* Action: Start with popular coins like American Eagles or Canadian Maple Leafs; compare premiums across suppliers.

* **Storage and Safety Are Critical**

* Store metals securely—options include home safes, safe deposit boxes, or professional vaulting services.
* Avoid storing large quantities in highly accessible or visible places.
* Action: Develop a layered security plan and consider insured third-party vaults for higher amounts.

* **Avoid Paper Gold and Silver (Unless Advanced)**

* ETFs and mining stocks can be manipulated and don’t offer the same protection as physical metal.
* These options are best for short-term traders or as speculative additions to a larger physical holding.
* Action: Focus on physical ownership first—use paper investments only after mastering the fundamentals.

* **Watch Key Indicators for Timing**

* Maloney advises tracking ratios like the gold-to-silver ratio, debt levels, inflation rates, and central bank activity.
* These indicators help identify when precious metals are undervalued or approaching a market shift.
* Action: Use these signals to buy during dips and prepare for potential profit-taking during spikes.

* **Use Gold and Silver to Build Long-Term Wealth**

* These assets should form a core part of a diversified, conservative wealth preservation strategy.
* In times of monetary crisis, gold and silver not only retain value—they can increase dramatically.
* Action: Consider allocating 10–25% of your net worth to physical precious metals, depending on risk and economic outlook.

* **Stay Informed and Skeptical**

* The mainstream financial system often ignores or downplays gold and silver.
* Maloney encourages independent research, awareness of global trends, and questioning conventional financial advice.
* Action: Regularly read economic news from alternative sources and track bullion market data.

The book positions precious metals as essential “insurance” against systemic financial risks. It provides not only the philosophical and historical case for gold and silver, but also detailed, step-by-step advice for acquiring, storing, and leveraging them as part of a broader wealth strategy.

This book is filled with misinformation and conspiracy-thinking, please don't buy it.

According to gold.org, humanity panned and dug up about 200,000 tonnes of gold throughout history and the remaining known commercial deposits contain another 50,000 tonnes of the stuff. Of the mined gold, roughly 100,000 tonnes of gold has been worked into jewelry and other ornaments, another 30,000 tonnes has found industrial or other applications, and the balance is held in the form or gold coins and bars by private investors and central banks (about 50/50 between them). If you were to turn all the mined gold in the world into one big cube, each of its sides would measure about 22 meters, and at current prices (c. $64,000 per kilo), the value of this cube would be 12.8 trillion dollars.

How much is that? Well, it's about 12x more than all the bitcoins put together (when BTC was still about $64,000 each), but it's not even half the total national debt of the USA ($28.4 trillion in '21).

--- I will need to return to this review at a later point to finish it.

I found the first two parts of the book covering the history of economic systems and the current state of the US economic system interesting. I did not know how fiat currency systems and fractional reserve banks function and try to control inflation so I found this book insightful. This covered 75% of the book.

The remaining 25% of the book focused on pushing investment into gold and especially silver. I did not find this section as interesting as the history and explanations in the previous sections.

The title is a bit of a misnomer. Three-fourths of this book are monetary history lessons of where we have been and what has worked in the past. The rest is a prolific look at where the author believes we are headed and what the reader can do about it. If you decide to read it and do your own research about the history and topics contained within, I suggest you draw your own conclusions.

An excellent primer on precious metals investing. It manages to be remarkable comprehensive while still being very readable. The monetary history was particularly interesting. I'm only giving it 4-stars because parts of it were out of date, and the 2015 updates felt too much like they were tacked on.

Great book. If you are not familiar with the way in which the world financial system works, this is a must. While the book is less about it's title "Guide to investing in Gold & Silver" and should have been called "Why to Invest in Gold & Silver", it was still a great read. If you are into something a little more meaty on this topic I highly recommend "The creature from Jekyll Island".

This was a good, easy read. Gives a good insight off gold and silver and how its the only real money thats stood the test off time. And the importance off buying gold and silver as it shall only continue too rise as all other currencys depreciate in value.

I listen to Mike a lot on youtube so not much new for me. A must read if this is unfamiliar territory for someone. The biggest take away for most will be to measure the actual value of assets rather than dwell on the dollar value being aware of cycles.

A good read,he really went in depth with the whole economical system and history. It felt like it was more of a economics book than a book on precious metals, but understand. He needed to speak on history to give frame and context to why gold is appealing in this day and age.

As a primer on the subject of precious metals investing this was very good, not great; liked it better than The Great Gold & Silver Rush of the 21st Century by the same author; some tricks&tips and basic insights into market mechanisms; as someone who is not used to this kind of thinking, at times the callousness and cold-heartedness of investors shines through (no human kindness in sight), in it for money and gains, is both repulsive, sobering and elucidating at the same time.

Top Investment book, alongside Warren, Lynch, A7, Ray Dalio, Currency Wars books.

Basically explaining the history of the United States in easy-to-understand words and charts explaining bubbles, and crashes. Mike Maloney also interviewed many people who work in Congress on the Federal Reserve.

I am definitely going to invest in gold as well since it is the only investment that survived 5000 years, if invested correctly, it can beat the stock market and real estate. For example, in Dotcom and 2008 bubble, gold was untouched by the crisis, and WAAAY outperformed stocks. Gold seems to really pop off when there's a lot of economic pressure and chaos in the economy. For example, Vietnam War, DotCom, Afghanistan war, the 2008 crisis, the America-China trade war, COVID.

It is recommended to watch his documentary to understand his philosophy.
