Last year my husband and I moved from Virginia, to Osprey, Florida, the state where both of us were raised, met, and married. In the summer we live in Chautauqua, New York. I'm a quilter, knitter, kayaker, and the mother of four children, whom I regard as my greatest creative endeavors. And now there are four wonderful grandchildren to spoil.

Bayou Midnight is the second book in the New Orleans trilogy by Emilie Richards. It is a revised and updated version of a previously published book. These books are set in New Orleans before hurricane Katrina changed it up so much.
As a reader not familiar with this part of the world I have to say I was fascinated by the setting that Emilie Richards describes so well. I was on my computer researching who cajuns are and their history. I know the author dearly loves this place, myself I'd be a little nervous, but it certainly is unique.
This is a romantic story about Antoinette - a psychologist and Sam the policeman. We met both in the previous book, and Sam was someone I really didn't warm to. He was a very suspicious and prickly man, although very loyal and once a friend - always a friend.
In this book he has all these same qualities, plus we see a gentle compassionate side, and that same prickly veneer. He is totally against getting involved and yet very attracted to the lovely Antoinette. I liked her very much, although she has one foible that could lead her into ill health if she kept it up.
The suspense part is that someone is trying to blow up an oil rig and damage an oil company who have been poor employers. Sam is on the case, but he doesn't seem to get anywhere until suddenly it is very close to home.
I loved the writing and the descriptions in this book and of course really the characters are just so adorable. I am so waiting for Night Magic which is Skeeter's story - a friend of Sam. This will be a totally new story because back in the bad old days of publishing they thought he was too much of a bad boy to have a book. Oh my! Little did they know then. For my taste he has been cleaned up a bit too much in Book 2 so I hope he still has his attitude when his book now comes to life next month. We shall see!

The hero of this book annoyed me like he did in Lady of the Night as well, Sam was just so wish-washy constantly hurting Antoinette, starting something with her and backing off and again and again.
Sam didn't grow up with the best home life and attention and on his way to a life of crime found the Cajun side of his family and embraced the law, becoming a cop. He considers himself a loner and with only a place for the job in his life, he asks for Antoinette's help with a case(he's a non-believer) and finds himself tempted, so does Antoinette who hasn't had much interest in a relationship after her disastrous marriage and a childhood with wealthy, aloof parents.
Sam was just plain annoying and Antoinette allowed him to play her knowing how he was, so no I wasn't sold on the romance and HEA, she should have just refused to take him back.

This is a revamp of an earlier Romantic Suspense novel by Emilie Richards. You know that right off the bat by what an integral part of the story the main character’s cigarette smoking plays in her managing her stress. Although the smoking is a little weird for these days (I don’t think I’ve read a romance in decades that mentioned smoking besides this series), there is absolutely no way Ms. Richards could have taken it out during the modernization and kept the story intact.
The setting is pre-Katrina New Orleans and Ms. Richards did an incredible job of describing the bayou in order to make it feel authentic and to give the reader a true feeling for it. You experience the beauty of the area through Antoinette’s eyes and emotions. Do I want to go to the swamps? No, but I’m glad Antoinette felt the beauty and could appreciate Sam’s home ground.
Antoinette and Sam were professionals who were working together on an arson case. The attraction was there immediately, but Sam was just really emotionally a mess and kept throwing up wall after wall anytime they came close to a relationship. He was frustrating, but you kept getting glimpses of the man he could really be.
This story had mystery, romance, hot stuff and heart stuff…all the good stuff.

This second book in this New Orleans Nights series is a great suspense book and can be read as a stand alone. Detective Sergeant Sam Long is one of three friends who grew up together on the streets of New Orleans. Now that Sam turned out well as a cop in New Orleans, they have kept in touch and each have their own adult story. With his tough childhood, no one influenced Sam as much as his Uncle Claude, who lives amongst the bayous and swamps. When Sam was young, he spent a couple of years there with his uncle and two sons, Martin and Leonce, who he considers brothers. After being attracted to psychologist Antoinette, he decides to take her to Bayou Midnight for a weekend visit. Through this visit to see them, and at the fishing camp Sam owned, I was able to experience the beauty of the area right along with her. And Sam is a totally different person when back in what I consider to be his element. I learned a lot about the life Cajuns live through the author’s descriptive words. The suspense involves an arsonist. The romance is about the struggles Sam has with his determination to never fall in love, including with Antoinette. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to Skeeter’s story. It may be my new favorite of this series.

This is the second book in the New Orleans Nights series. You do not have to read the books in order but the characters are mentioned so if you have read the first book you will understand who they are. Antoinette Deveraux is a psychologist who is trying to give up smoking. She is having a hard time giving up her long-loved habit. She tries to use it as a learning experience so that she would remember when she became impatient with people who refused to give up a habit that was damaging them. Police Detective Sam Long is the boyhood friend of a friend of Antoinette’s. Detective Long needs Dr. Long’s help in retrieving information from a little girl who was in a building that was bombed. She remembers falling asleep on a couch and woke up on the sidewalk with the building on fire, nothing in between. Sam is investigating the bombing and feels that the person who rescued the little girl may have had a hand in the bombing. The story is one of intrigue, romance, and family dynamics. The story takes place in one of my favorite cities, New Orleans, and the mysterious bayou. It was a great story that I plan to read more than once.

This is another updated rerelease of a romantic suspense novel by Emilie Richards. The first book in the series is Lady of the Night, but this book can stand alone.
Sam and Antoinette meet when Sam, a police detective needs help with a child witness to a crime. Antoinette is a child psychologist and might be able to help the little girl remember what she saw.
Sam and Antoinette are attracted to each other, but Sam is afraid to get too deep into a relationship with Antoinette.
As the investigation continues, Sam and Antoinette get caught up in the case, and both end up in danger. The story keeps you guessing until the very end.
I enjoyed Sam and Antoinette’s story, although at times I wanted to give Sam a shake for being so obtuse. It is a testimony to Emilie Richards’ character development that I cared so much about these characters.
I enjoyed this story, that sent me, more than once, checking locations and expressions as I learned more about bayous and Cajan culture.

The book felt so authentic and liked the entire series. The description of New Orleans swamps and the districts, the food and culture of the Cajun, the way of living, their attitudes, their hardships, the Oil rigs are very vivid. I am impressed with the author’s research and ability to bring this level of authenticity and realism to her descriptions. The plot, plot twists, all of the characters including the secondary ones are very colorful and interesting.
The H is a homicide detective researching about an arson case with an Oil company and the h is a psychologist with background in hypnotherapy as she can help with the child witness. The two share immediate chemistry. The H undermines h during the session and then as the h describes he makes her feel like a ping pong ball. He wants her then he doesn’t and H confirms it saying he doesn’t have the sense of damsel fly. Yet the way the H and h come together and learn and understand about each other makes for interesting reading.

A real introduction into Louisiana bayou culture. I have never before felt such a sense of the reality of the swamps in anything else I have read about Louisiana and the bayou culture. The details and descriptions are fantastic, but I am not sure it is a place I would want to visit, The story of Sam and Antionette is intriguing--and the resolution of the mystery and ending--or new chapter--to their story kept me reading long past my bedtime. Antoinette 's vice definitely dates the original book. Emilie Richards never disappoints.

The second of three books set in New Orleans in the years just prior to Hurricane Katrina (2005, when as locals know "everything" changed) this is the story of a street cop and a psychologist who find each other while finding out who set fire to a building. Both have made a life out of helping others while keeping themselves aloof from the fray but as this book takes them from the neighborhoods of New Orleans to the swamps of Cajun county, guess what happens. As with much romantic suspense, the ending is a little on the unrealistic side, but ....

We met Sam in Lady of the Night, and this is his story of finding that special someone. Sam is something of a loner, believing that he isn’t worth that someone special to love. When he meets Dr. Antoinette Deveraux he’s like a light switch, on and off over and over until he’s shot and he realizes how wrong he was. You do not need to read Lady of the Night to read this book, but Joshua and Maggie do make an appearance or two in Bayou Midnight!

The plot of this second book in the New Orleans Nights series lends itself perfectly to the murky swamps of Louisiana. The mystery that unfolds coincides with the mysterious bayou and culture of the Cajun people. Romance and well developed characters allows the reader to identify with life’s challenges and a never ending desire to love and be loved. Another great romantic mystery by Emilie Richards. I recommend it especially after reading Lady of The Night.

Bayou Midnight had me from the start! The story about New Orleans homicide detective Sam solving his latest case while trying to figure out his feelings for Antoinette, a psychologist he enlisted to help, has love, mystery, and suspense. The way Emilie Richards weaves it all together, including the interesting lifestyle of the Cajun people, is intriguing! This #2 book in the New Orleans Nights series does not disappoint!

I bought this book a long time ago in a huge pack of books by this author from eBay. As in, when eBay was fairly new. This book is from 1987, and some things (like the smoking) don't really resonate these days. Otherwise, it's a classic romance novel. The sort of thing one might need like the heroine needs cigarettes, as a stress reliever during a pandemic.

A romantic suspense focusing on a New Orleans Detective Sergeant and a psychologist. Characters are well developed and the setting well defined. The build to their romance is a back and forth leading up to their HEA.
