Diane Mott Davidson

She has since written 14 more mysteries, all featuring Goldy the caterer. In addition, she has written short stories and poetry for various publications. Davidson has won the Anthony Award from Bouchercon, and has been nominated for the Agatha, another Anthony, and the Macavity Award. In 1993 she was named Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers' Writer of the Year.
Davidson was educated at St. Anne's School in Charlottesville, Virginia, where her English teacher, Emyl Jenkins, encouraged her to become a writer. She attended Wellesley College, where she was named a Wellesley Scholar, before transferring to Stanford University, from which she graduated with a double major in Art History and Political Science. Several years (and one child) later, she received her MA in Art History from Johns Hopkins.
Davidson has volunteered for numerous organizations. She was a tutor in a correctional facility, rape-victim counselor, and served for 10 years on the Board of Examining Chaplains of the Episcopal Diocese of Colorado. Book Review
4 of 5 stars to The Main Corpse, the 6th of 17 books in the "Goldy Bear Shultz Culinary" cozy mystery series, written in 1996 by Diane Mott Davidson. In this release, Goldy must protect her best friend Marla from a potential financial scheme and possible murder. They say "money is the root of all evil," and sometimes, it is true. I'm not sure where that saying originated (perhaps something to research!), but it's definitely accurate in this delectable cozy mystery. Marla, Goldy's best friend, who has inherited and made a significant amount of money over the years, is looking to invest it in something new. When Marla mixes business with pleasure, Goldy warns her to be careful, but it ends up too late. Marla is accused of causing her boyfriend's disappearance and then additional murders. Goldy uses her culinary skills to try and solve the case (by baking delicious meals for the financial firm, of course), hoping to clear Marla and make some money herself... Though I love these books, and I totally understand why not, wouldn't it just be easier if Marla gave Goldy some money and they focused only on cooking -- and not trying to pay the bills and track criminals? But then where would we be...
I enjoy cozy mysteries and this particular one is an example of why. It's well-rounded, has some fun crimes to solve, delicious recipes and memorable characters. When I need a few hours of respite, away from work or the other stresses of life, curling up on the couch or in bed with some down-home, friendly people, putting my brain to a little bit of a welcome challenge, and immersing myself in someone else's world, things somehow look rosier when I'm done. And this is one of those series that although there are a few weak books, for the most part a good 85% of them are either good or great stories. Certainly not a thriller or suspense series by any nature, but still a good mystery with several criminals and a few fun side stories with interesting characters.

I thought this series was okay, if not my favorite, before I got to this book. When the protagonist commits multiple felonies that were completely unnecessary (in my opinion), and there are no consequences for her actions, that is just too much for me. This is the last book of the series that I read. I won’t be back.

Well, if this book is anything to go by, this year will be a great year for me, reading wise! Diane Mott Davidson wrote an amazing book with the perfect amount of suspense mixed with mystery. Simply, wonderful!

Now I understand that when you read this genre, you have to take a giant step away from reality, but when a caterer kidnaps a jail inmate while she is being transported to a medical facility – not all should be forgiven just because your husband is a member of the local police department.
That really was my only complaint about this book. I enjoy Goldy Schultz and the crazy antics that she gets herself into. Really, who else is called to cater a company luncheon in an old mine that four wheel drive vehicles have a hard time getting to but her old trusty catering van has no trouble with. Goldy really does have the golden touch, not just with food, but apparently with terrain also.
Goldy’s best friend Marla is now out of the hospital after suffering a heart attack and has invested in the Eurydice Gold Mine. On a deeper look, boyfriend Tony Royce and financial advisor Albert Lipscomb may have something to hide. When a fraud is discovered and the partners are missing, Goldy rushes to her friend’s aid, but this time Goldy may have gone too far and has managed to put not only herself, but her loved ones as well, in great danger.
In this book, you will say goodbye to one character and hello to another. I will miss one, who always brought a smile to my face and will I withhold judgment on the new addition. There is real potential in this young man, but we will see where Ms Davison goes with him.
Once again, I suggest that you start this series from the beginning so you can appreciate all the quirks that are Goldy. She is quite an endearing character, and one that you will enjoy coming back to time and time again.

Really?!? The main character is a moron. Spoilers below, and some really irritated language because, wow, this was just so dumb.
It started out ok. Great, she's a caterer, overhears some stuff and is peripherally involved in a scam and disappearance and does some investigating because that's what caterers do in mystery novels. I can certainly suspend my disbelief this far. But when her friend is arrested and is in jail for all of three hours and the caterer freaks out and decides she must break her out of jail? Really? And goes on to stage a car wreck, hold up an ambulance, knock out paramedics, and force her friend to escape from custody. Consequences? What consequences? And the caterer keeps talking about what morons the cops are for arresting her friend in the first place. This is a stupid woman and a terrible plot development. I'm ashamed on behalf of the editor for not stopping some of this awful, awful overblown plot line. And to take her son hunting for a murderer? And the ridiculous mine business. Also, just married, her husband is a cop, and she just doesn't bother talking to him about it or thinking "gosh, if I do this, my family is screwed". Of course not, because as the caterer she is clearly smarter than the entire police department. Not to denigrate caterers, but this one? She is a moron.

For once I thought that Goldy wasn't going to do anything too over-the-top ridiculous and then I got to page 197 (adobe ebook version). I know I just need to get over it and suspend all disbelief when I read these books, but I still hold on to some shred of hope that Goldy's actions will be based somewhat on reality. In this case, she, General Bo and her son Arch hold up an ambulance, "kidnap" Marla from it (she had been arrested but on her way to the hospital due to a risky idea of Goldy's), throw away the gun of law enforcement, allegedly knocks out another law enforcement officer and track down a murderer. Why her husband puts up with her condescending attitude towards him or even condones her law-breaking, I'm not sure, but it baffles this reader. Aside from the craziness, the story was an interesting one and while I did figure out the murderer fairly early on, there were some good twists and turns. Not to mention, I must try the cherry coffee cake recipe - it looks amazing.

The first half is fine, and could be elevated by a refinement of style. Davidson doesn't really have one, unless food is involved. The back half becomes increasingly implausible and mind-numbingly action-oriented.
The Main Corpse takes its time getting to the whodunit, and for a brief span, toward the middle of the book, I had the feeling it was finally getting interesting, as Goldy was invited (under pressure from her best friend, Marla, among others) to try some awful-sounding soups as part of a restaurant-evaluation-cum-investment-scheme. It was weird, it was uncomfortable, and if the whole book had played around ideas like that one, I'd have given it much higher marks.
Frustratingly, only a short while after, Goldy breaks Marla from jail, during which co-conspirator Gen. Bo Farquhar assaults an innocent guard (leading to the quote above). Numerous crimes without consequence follow. I think I might have liked it more if the General had lost it, actually killed the guard, and the story descended into madness and defeat from there. Earlier on (See Pg. 115), he had made the bizarre, unfounded claim that landslides are caused by the full moon, so why not? This alternative would at least be reasonable. As is, the back half of The Main Corpse is a script for a low budget action movie, probably produced by Lifetime.

Goldy caters a party at an old gold mine for an investment firm, she has no idea her best friend will eventually be accused of murder. The hosts of the party want to celebrate the reopening of the Eurydice Gold Mine and convince their investors they'll all make a fortune. Marla and Goldy are not convinced the gold mine deal is legitimate. One of the business partner has already died and then another seemingly runs away with the investors' money. When Marla is charged with the murder of Tony, the third partner and her current boyfriend, Goldy hatches a wild plan to clear her friend's name. As Goldy cooks her way through her latest adventure, she prepares a number of delicious recipes, tries to befriend Arch's new dog and depends on husband, Tom for his unconditional love and support.
There is some humor sprinkled and weaved throughout the story. I will continue to read this series and author.

This book was a good distraction from real life, especially the news of late. Still, I'm surprised by how much trouble Goldy chooses to get into, especially considering she's married to someone in the Sheriff's department

Although I did like this one more than The Last Suppers I did have a small issue with it. Goldy goes completely rouge in this one. For what ever reason that bothered me. It was kinda slow moving up until the point of the book where she breaks Marla out of jail. The whole book seemed kinda all over the place....very manic....which I guess makes sense because the whole thing with Marla being accused of murder is making Goldy crazy. I felt better after she called Tom that morning after being in the Hardcastle place. It was like an anchor was dropped. It kinda upset me that Goldy just took off and left without any regard for anything. With that being said, I thought the ending was kinda badass. Love how Goldy went after Tony with the shovel.

A WONDERFUL BOOK!!!! I love the characters in this series!! They really feel like family to me!!!! I just couldn't believe that Marla got duped in this one. She just doesn't seem like someone that would take a bunch of bull off of anyone. I can't wait to read more in the series!!!!

I thought I read ALL of the Diane Mott Davidson Goldy Schulz novels. I am not a foodie but I do like cozy mysteries. I down loaded this audio to listen to while I do my morning and evening stretches. Barbara Rosenblat’s audiobook performance is always entertaining ~her dry delivery usually has me laughing out loud!
My first Goldy was The Cereal Killers. At that time the series was “Goldy Bear Culinary Mysteries.
I continued to read the series but Awww none have been quite as good as that first one.

I've read several of these murder mysteries with recipes in the past. I found the earlier ones more enjoyable than this one. I didn't solve the mystery faster than Goldie bear (I usually don't), but I think I will try the recipe for Sour Cream Cherry Coffee Cake that was included here. Who can't use a good coffee cake recipe?

Yeah! The last book I read in this series was BORING! So happy to report that The Main Corpse moves a a good pace and has twists and turns and characters that held my interest. It helps that much of the novel was set in Idaho Springs.

Starts off slow. Then they make you think something big will happen. The murder story starts to gets better. But in the end. Nothing. Happens. Nothing.

Gosh, I just couldn't get into this one. Lots going on, though. Arch and Tom adopt a trainee dog rejected from the tracking program at the PD, but they continue his training, and he's catching on. Goldy's catering firm is in a slump, and Maguire, son of the headmaster of Elk Park Prep School, who's Julian's replacement, is thinking of becoming a detective, so he loves Goldy's penchant for solving crime. Her friend Marla is investing heavily with her boyfriend's multimillion-dollar financial firm, so she gets them to hire Goldy to cater a reopening at Eurydice Gold Mine, where they've invested quite a bit of money in an abandoned mine, hoping to get rich on gold.
WITHOUT TOO MANY SPOILERS, here's the deal....Normally I'm not waiting for a book to end, but Goldy seemed off her game this time around. She brings Arch along to kidnap a prisoner (plan is to trick the ambulance into stopping, knock out the EMT and guard, and run for it), then goes on the run with said prisoner right around the area she did the activities that got her sent up the river. Bizarre judgment on Goldy's part...and she appears to get off scot-free. With all her worrying about Arch, you'd think having him tag along on illegal activities would be out of the question.

Once again her cop husband Tom will warn her (at least 5 times) to not get involved in investigating. Once again she will ignore him and get herself into a jam (and we’re not talking raspberry). At one point Goldy muses: Poor Arch. He should have had a better mother. Not someone who went tearing off at every opportunity to solve crimes. A mother who stayed in her kitchen where she belonged and left police work to the police … I couldn’t say it better myself.
I've read a number of these mysteries and found them entertaining and delicious at the outset, but now I'm tired of the formula. The recipes are still great, but the plot is thin, and the dialogue repetitive. I’m only reading them because they are quick and satisfy a challenge.

I really liked this story. Food and mystery go so well together.
I have skipped around in this series, but the good part is it mostly doesn't make that big of a difference. Davidson does not look back to previous incidents in her stories.I just picked up Dying for Chocolate, which will be my next read.
It was mystifying when Lipscomb ran off with all the investors money, and I was really mad when the police were charging Marla in the Murder of Tony, but in the end Goldy, Marla, Arch Jake, and General Bo, I got some pretty good laughs, what a team they all made. Great ending, except that General Bo didn't make it out alive.
I have skipped around in this series, but the good part is it mostly doesn't make that big of a difference. Davidson does not look back to previous incidents in her stories.I just picked up Dying for Chocolate, which will be my next read.

I'm so tired of Goldy spending all of her time worrying about her son and trying to shield him from the truth about his father! He seems pretty dim to me if he hasn't figured out how selfish and self-involved his father is. I enjoy the recipes and the mysteries, but Arch makes it difficult to read. I just want to scream at her to get a backbone and quit cowering whenever the jerk starts yelling and brow beating her. AND QUIT WORRYING ABOUT ARCH!!!

As I have been a fan of the Goldy Schulz books for years, I enjoyed this one too. However, while reading this on my kindle, there were missing pages frequently enough to create another mystery as to what was missing. This takes nothing away from the book but was very frustrating
I will be looking forward to the next book in the series for more adventures with Goldy and her family and friends.

Wow couldn't put it down.
I love the series but that was because I could ration the time spent reading. This one however, was a page turner that I could not wait to see what happened! I love trying new recipes and find at least 2 in each book to try. So far they have all been hits. I'm going to take today off but tomorrow I will begin reading the next one.
