The Billionaire Kings #1

My Best Friend, the Billionaire

Rate this book
Never fall in love with your best friend…

I met Hal on the first day of high school.
I also fell in love with Hal on the first day of high school.
But although we were good friends from the start, I knew he’d never be mine.
He’s gorgeous, confident, sexy, and he’s also incredibly rich.
I’m scarred – physically and emotionally – quiet, and my family has always been poor. The two of us are poles apart.
So I’ve trained myself not to think of him in that way.
Not to think of kissing him, undressing him slowly.
Of sliding beneath the bedclothes. Of having his hands on my skin.
I don’t think of it at all.
I can’t. Because Hal never stays with a girl for long, and if he were to have me, then leave me, my heart would break into a million pieces, and I’d never be able to put it together again.
But then he tells me he’s fallen in love with someone. I try to guess who, and he just smiles.
“Izzy,” he says patiently, “it’s you.”
Oh no.

The Billionaire Kings is set in Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary and features the sons of the heroes from the USA Today bestselling Three Wise Men series of sexy holiday romances. The books are all standalones, and you don’t have to have read the Three Wise Men to enjoy The Billionaire Kings, but if you have read them you will hopefully have fun meeting up with Brock, Charlie, and Matt occasionally in these stories! This new series takes place approximately thirty years after the Three Wise Men, but it’s not set ‘in the future’. I just thought it would be fun to write a new series that had a connection to one of my favorites. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!

I want to start by saying I love Serenity Woods books. This is the book I’ve read that just wanted to get through. The story line was great. I love the idea of a new series revolving around the veterinarians My issue was Izzy and I get that she had emotional as well as physical scars but she was so whiny I couldn’t take it. She’s known Hal practically her whole life and in her words he’s her best friend. I can understand her being cautious after he breaks up with Rosie, and tells Izzy he’s interested in her and always has been, at the same time. But even after multiple people comment to her and him it’s about time and her brother admitted he warned him off on two occasions she still was so whiny and insecure I was tempted to just skip the end. Hoping the next book is better. I guess I’m just more partial to strong female characters

I love this author’s work on general, and I was a fan of the three kings series, so I was excited to start this new series that spins off from it. The setting at an animal sanctuary has great promise for the series, but I just feel overwhelmed by all the different characters mentioned, and I was very underwhelmed by Izzy.

She was just so negative, offputting and a real cold fish, making the romance awkward and not much fun to read. I never really understood that much why Hal was interested in her. I feel like we needed more of their backstory as friends before jumping right into this romance, and the short time frame from Hal’s breakup to the new romance didn’t seem realistic.

I do plan to give the next book in the series a read, though. This one just wasn’t for me.

Izzy and Hal are veterinarians who've been best friends for years. Now they're around 30. They work at an animal rescue/veterinary hospital in New Zealand. She's a quiet person; he's a playboy. When Hal gets tired of playing the field and tries to convince Izzy she's always been the only woman for him, she bolts. She wants him, of course. Has forever. But now she thinks his declaration threatens their beautiful friendship. Hal sets about courting her, taking it slow. Meanwhile, his maniac ex-girlfriend serves as antagonist.

What I liked: Both the mains are good, interesting people. Their attraction is pretty convincing. The sex is hot. The setting is appealing (virtually a commune of smart, kind, animal medics). The author's description of Noah, one of the billionaires, hooked me enough to want to read how he comes out of his shell.

What dropped the star count: Izzy had the inner strength to survive childhood scarring and become a vet, yet around Hal as lover she's an insecure child. I understand she's shy, introverted, etc., but her insecurity became annoying. Also, the fact of Hal's billionaire status plays almost no part in the story; he just drinks better whisky and has bigger plans than most of us.

So, a mixed bag.

Serenity Woods has jumped 30 years into the future for this new series. This series is based on the children of the original Three Wise Men series which I have not read. Although now I need to go and read the original series ASAP.

I had no trouble reading My Best Friend, The Billionaire and in fact it is one of my favourite so far from Serenity Woods.

Hal and Izzy have been best friends since they were kids and yet neither have ever crossed the line. Despite herself Izzy has been in love with Hal for years but has buried her feelings and refused to bring them out into the open.

Imagine her absolute shock when Hal after a bitter break up admits to her that he has deep feelings for Izzy and has for a long time.

Izzy was badly burned when she was younger and as such as a deep seated insecurity with her appearance whilst Hal is gorgeous. They say that beauty is skin deep and the obvious love that Hal has for Izzy is totally swoon worthy, he sees beneath her scars to the beauty that is the real Izzy.

I was captivated with their story from chapter one and this was one of those books I could not put down.

This was an emotional roller coaster of a read which had me in tears on occasion and then laughing out loud.

Never have I wanted a couple to get their happily ever after as much as I wanted it for Hal and Izzy.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Meh...

The story was good, but I felt underwhelmed with the character development. There was a lot more "telling" than showing and I had a hard time getting invested in the characters. The climax of the story was rather anticlimactic for me. I just feel like the story could've been much more developed.

Hal and Izzy are vets working for the same practice in New Zealand. They treat animals together and also go to rescue animals together. They've known each other since they were kids and have been in love with each other for just as long without the other knowing how the other feels..
Hal finally plucks up the courage to confront Izzy with his feelings. To make her see that he means it and its her for the long haul. No more short meaningless flings he wants her forever.
Final thoughts
I loved this. I think you need to over look them dating other people as its just for the sake of him trying to get over her and her get over him but its still a sweet story.
I didn't see the need to also make her a virgin, but hey it didn't detract from the story so that is fine.

I couldn't put this book down. I love Izzy and Hal so much. They may have known each other for eighteen years, but they certainly don't know each other.

Working closely together as veterinarians brings their attraction for one another to the forefront, but Izzy has lots of unresolved issues and she tries to sabotage Hal at every turn.

Oh my gosh. Hal is one of the hottest book boyfriend's Serenity has written. I'm in love with him too.

Put veterinarians, animals, lots of nice, caring friends, and romance on the table and I'm full in.

My Best Friend, The Billionaire by Serenity Woods
The Billionaire Kings #1

Hal may be the perfect book boyfriend...and his choice in Izzy perfect for both him and her. They seem opposites in some ways but so well matched in all the ways that count. This is a friends to lovers story that was oh so very special. The two have known one another almost two decades and are as close as close can be without being married. Everyone around them knows they are fond of one another so are not surprised when they begin to date...well...except for one woman and that is Rosie. Rosie blew her chance with Hal and it turns her into a mean-girl who does her best to get Hal back. There was friendship, caring, sharing, getting to know one another as more than friends and veterinarians working in the same place AND there is sizzle and steam that was scorching hot. I always enjoy this author’s books and do look forward to reading more in this series because there are so many characters I want to find out about...and not just the Kings of the second generation but also Izzy’s brother and a few others.

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Will I read the next book in the series? Without a doubt

Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Loved it, New Zealand, romantic, kind, cute animals, Veterinarians, best friends, respectful- LOVED. This author writes such sweet characters. We have to best friends, both veterinarians, who rescue animals from horrible situations. When friendship starts turning into more it gets hairy, risking friendship is a real danger. HEA <3

Slow...Kind of sexy...

What I liked:
Characters
Theme
Setting
Spiciness

What I didn’t like:
The continual pity party...
The lack of back bone...
These two reoccurring issues became monotonous towards the end.

Note: I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book is the start of a new series that follows on from the Three Kings series, but focuses on their children this time. You do not need to have read the other series to read this one. This book is such a beautiful book and the only way I can describe the feeling I got after reading it is that I felt light and airy. It was literally so sweet and beautiful but with some sexy moments to help keep the heat going. It is set in New Zealand and focuses on Noah’s Ark which is a veterinary clinic and animal shelter. This story focuses on one of the owners Hal and his best friend Izzy.

Hal is a vet who works at Noah’s ark, which he co-owns with his family. As well as being a vet he is also part of the animal rescue team with his best friend and fellow vet Izzy. While everyone knows that he, along with his family, are billionaires, it is not obvious as Hal does not spend his money recklessly instead choosing what he needs for comfort. He is offered an opportunity to advance his career that makes him re-evaluate his life in general. Starting with his feelings for his long term best friend Izzy.

Even though vet Hal is well known for being a man whore he was always been open and respectful to the women that he is with. They know the situation is short term and he never misleads them. For the last year he has been in his first long term relationship with a veterinary nurse he works with called Rosie. However, their relationship has not been working for a while and when he finds that she has cheated he decides to ends things. But Rosie is not ready to let go!

Izzy is a quiet, sheltered, sweet girl who has such a passion for her work that it has almost taken over her entire life. But she is plagued by a lack of self-confidence and body image hatred that comes from the horrendous burn scars that cover most of the right side of her body. She wears long sleeve, high neck tops so that nobody ever sees them. So when her best friend Hal, who she has secretly been crushing on for years, finally confesses that he has feelings for her she does not believe him and does not feel that she is worth the love.

Watching Hal and Izzy’s relationship blossom and go from friends to more is just plain beautiful. The way that Hal took care of her and was so aware of her feelings and the negativity that she felt for herself was so great to witness. Seeing him help her to believe that their love is real and that it can last was so sweet that I couldn’t help but smile.

Most billionaire books that I have read feature a hot headed, alpha male with a ‘my way or the highway’ approach who is constantly flashing his cash. But this book is completely different. Hal uses his money when he needs to for comfort so that he can have the best or give Izzy the best but neither he nor Izzy care about the money and this was refreshing to see. I also liked the fact that Hal wasn’t your typical alpha male because he was in touch with Izzy’s feelings and did what he could to put her first. But the passion and heat between them was enough to scorch the page and Hal certainly became an alpha in the bedroom. For all of these reasons and so many more I really liked Hal as a character. He knew what he wanted in life and he went after it, doing whatever he could to make it work. But I also loved Izzy’s character and enjoyed seeing her grow from being so broken and fragile that she didn’t believe anyone could or should love her to being brave enough to accept that the future is not known and that if she is going to take a chance on anything then it should be her love for Hal.

This is a sweet, sensual book that will draw you into the world of Noah’s Ark. Obviously there are obstacles and the path to true love never does run smoothly but it will just keep you more gripped, holding out for that happily ever after. I loved the secondary characters we were introduced to and can’t wait to read more about them and watch their stories unfold as the billionaire series develops. But as for this book, if you are looking for something sweet, beautiful and sexy that will make you happy and leave you with a smile on your face and an aching need for more of the Noah’s ark crew then this is the book for you.

I’ve enjoyed all the author’s New Zealand series and this one is no exception. The hero, while very wealthy, is really just a dedicated veterinarian who happened to have inherited money from his father. If you’ve read Woods’ series of the Three Kings, this series begins about the children of the couples in those books. In that series, three brothers made billions marketing health devices to help children. Now, apparently, their business was so successful that their children are also billionaires. There are a lot of characters introduced in this book to set up the new series plus bringing in a family picnic bringing back the characters from the original series. I had a bit of trouble keeping everyone straight and remembering who was who from the first series.

This new generation is also dedicated to helping others, in this case working with animals. They all seem to work together in a veterinary clinic while also working with the ASPCA and rescuing abused animals. What could be more appealing than a hunky, wealthy “dog whisperer”?

The premise for this book is that Hal and Izzy have been best friends for 18 years when they met as pre-teens. Now they work together at the vet clinic. Hal has been in love with Izzy this entire time but didn’t make a move to let her know because her older brother warned him to leave her alone years ago. Instead he slept around and basically got backed into a relationship with a nurse at the clinic after a few dates when she moved in and then started talking about marriage. So he finally wised up and broke it off with her. Now he decides to let Izzy know how he really feels but she doesn’t believe him because she’s terribly insecure.

She has all sorts of issues because her dad died and her mother was an alcoholic. She has a terrible burn on her upper body, apparently, from boiling liquid. This has led her to avoid relationships because she is so insecure about her looks and personality. I kept waiting to learn how she got this burn and we never got that back story just that it was somehow her mother’s fault.

What is nice is that, although the hero is wealthy, that is not his defining characteristic as it is in other “billionaire” romances. He’s a good man who loves animals and treats other people well. He’s finally ready to declare his love for his best friend and embrace the opportunity to show how much he cares about her. This isn’t an insta-lust novel as so many billionaire romances are. Instead, it’s about a good man who cares about a good woman. I’m always a sucker for a friends-to-lover storyline and this was an enjoyable read.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book that I received from the author; however, the opinions are my own and I did not receive any compensation for my review.

Exciting start to a cool new series

I adore the concept of this new series! It focuses on the grown-up children of the characters from the author's “Three Kings” trilogy. The Three Kings were very nice, warm-hearted billionaire brothers who were devoted to giving back to charities. Their 6 or so kids are now grown up and run a nonprofit animal rescue center and veterinary clinic in New Zealand. A few of the billionaire second generation are veterinarians, one is the IT director, and one is the HR director at the business. Hal is an intelligent, tall, gorgeous veterinarian who does not act like he is rich. He just works hard saving cute animals, has a really nice apartment, and goes out to nice restaurants more than the average person. Izzy (Isabelle) is a smart, capable veterinarian who has been Hal's best friend since grade school. Hal has secretly been in love with Izzy, but her brother warned him away from her in high school. Izzy has secretly been hiding feelings for Hal and can’t believe that he would ever want to date her, who has burn scars on her abdomen and shoulder. Can they overcome the impediments to their love?

The pacing of their growing relationship was really great. I also love the extra dash of suspense when they rescued an abused dog from a dangerous situation (this happened very early on) as well as the suspense from another source. In addition, the love scenes were wonderfully intimate and spicy. Izzy and Hal have great chemistry, and they communicate well. I also really like the secondary characters who will have their own books later. Lastly, the Noah's Ark business is located on gorgeous land overlooking the ocean; the land and the adorable rescued pets there are lovingly described.

I was on the fence about whether I should give this one 4 or 5 stars. I quite enjoyed it, but I did not like a couple of details in the book, so I settled on 4 stars. Firstly, the heroine Izzy was understandably self-conscious and had trust issues, but for me I did not like how long it took her to overcome them. Second, the first person perspective alternating between the pair of main characters worked well. It felt fresh and not awkward. However, I would have preferred alternating third person perspective.

I enjoyed this book, and I recommend it to anyone who likes first-person contemporary romances. I am really looking forward to the rest of the series!

With My Best Friend, the Billionaire, Serenity Woods leaps 30 years into the future to share the stories of the children of the three King bothers.
The vividness of the narration and the brightness of the characters, however, remain the same, making this spin off is as pleasant as the originals.
The setting is now in the north eastern part of New Zealand, featuring breathtaking views of the ocean and fascinating landscapes, making the reader, especially those in the Northern hemisphere, dream of sunny beaches, crystal clear waters and blue skies.
Despite two of the King brothers having been incredibly gifted medical doctors, most of their children concentrate on animals, running a multi purpose veterinary facility called Noah’s Ark, nonetheless.
Together with their group of co-workers and friends, they become a lively, diverse and captivating cast.
Ms. Woods masterfully hints at the myriad of stories that can be read between the lines of their friendly banter, concentrating on the first two protagonists, Hal and Izzy.
Hal’s traits are common to most of the King cousins: rich and handsome, most of them are self confident and extrovert individuals. Despite being extremely wealthy, all of them are dedicated professionals working hard at developing and expanding their business. They also share a generous heart and solid life principles.
Izzy is a self made woman, a successful veterinarian who had to fight and conquer to reach every achievement in her life. She is loving and generous, but her difficult upbringing has left scars and insecurities that cloud her life.
Izzy cannot believe that her childhood friend Hal can be seriously committed for the first time in his life, and, contrary to the stereotypical Cinderella story, refuses to give up a career and a life she loves to follow Prince Charming.
Hal’s struggles, the group dynamics, Izzy’s uncertainties and the unavoidable bad guy (or girl) give life to a lively, sweet story.
Last but not least, the book is populated by innumerable, heart stealing, abandoned, sick and mistreated animals that the Ark is dedicated to save. They play a discrete but fundamental role in the story, giving life to many cameo episodes that enrich the plot and make the book stand out.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. Opinions and comments are solely my own.

Fun spin-off of the "Three Wise Men" series. Most of My Best Friend, the Billionaire hooked me, but toward the end, I started learning toward 3.5 stars.

Izzy and Hal are best friends who work at the animal sanctuary, Noah's Ark. Hal has always been a ladies' man, while Izzy is reserved about her private life. After a wake-up call from his current partner, Hal decides he needs to tell Izzy how much he's wanted her as more than a friend for most of their friendship. Izzy has fairly low self-confidence due to a severe burn from her childhood and balks at Hal trying to make her a notch on his bedpost. Quite hurt by Izzy's reaction, Hal wants to prove his feelings are more than a fleeting fancy. The two begin to slowly test the waters of dating and romantic intimacy.

While the billionaire bit was present enough, it wasn't the defining characteristic of the overall story. It's refreshing to see two people who don't dwell on the money as their reason for getting or not getting together. Izzy had some good reasons for not initially jumping at the chance to date her best friend, however, toward the end, I started to want to give her a good shake. She would be doing just fine, then have a big backslide when something happened, usually to do with Hal's ex, but not with Hal himself. The fact that she kept dwelling on her physical flaw, but then made an about face right at the end was frustrating.

I thought Hal did a lot to show Izzy how much he wanted her as a permanent part of his life. He came across as a decent guy, for more than the fact that he works as a vet with abused animals. I wish he had been more firm with his ex, because I felt like that also came to too quick a resolution at the end. Given how nasty the ex was, it felt like she got off with a slap on the wrist.

I still feel like the overall story was a great start to the series and am excited to see how the other characters' stories shake out. This is a fun concept to check-in on some beloved characters from a previous series, but not have them pop-in to the point of distraction.

I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book.

2.5 stars. On the one hand, this is a typical romance book where the MMC is gorgeous and capable and rich, and the MFC has insecurities he helps her overcome.

And, as is typical, the MMC was a manwh0re, but were expected to be okay with that because it was because none of them were her. The MMC is a coward and a jerk. He’s a manwhore who has supposedly been in love with the MFC for years. But he never acted because her brother warned him off.

Instead he is sleeping with and living with one of their co-workers - they’ve been in a relationship for a year 1 but he loses interest. Rather than telling her, he passively goes cold on her and stops sleeping with het. Until she desperately tries to make him jealous by sleeping with OM. She was wrong to cheat, but he was a real ass to her. But it’s supposed to be okay because she pushed him into a relationship when he wasn’t interested. And he is so weak he let her move in? She’s portrayed as an unpleasant gold digger to make the way he treats her acceptable - but this makes it worse he stayed in a relationship with her for a year.

And after they break up, he IMMEDIATELY starts dating the MFC, who is a co-worker for OW and him and supposedly her friend. Wtf. The MFC, who is supposedly this wonderful person, criticizes her for not having “grace” about the way MMC treats her, but I’d be pissed too if I were OW. Of course, this becomes a bigger plot device. But even before she goes nuts, no one shows any empathy for the OW.

And once she goes nuts, the MMC buries his head in the sand. He doesn’t think about the MFC. At 87% I almost want them not to end up together, because he’s such an idiot.

Also, the two MCs repeatedly say they are each other’s “best friend” who know each other better than anyone else, but when they finally go on a date, they talk about movies etc like they have no clue what the other likes. My best friends know these things about me!

This is a great start to a new series. This is Hal’s story. He is the son of Brock, one of the Three Kings, from a previous series. Hal and his cousins built and run the Ark, a veterinarian practice and animal rescue centre. Hal is a vet, he is called the Dog Whisperer because he is so good at calming them down. He has been in love with Izzy since he was eleven, and she reciprocates his feelings, but neither of them have ever acted upon it, or told each other how they feel. Hal has been a player, never staying with a woman for long, until Rosie joined the practice as a nurse and gradually moved herself into his house. When this story begins he has just broken up with her because she was unfaithful.

Izzy is another vet in the practice. She and Hal have known each other almost all their lives. She suffered an awful accident as a child when she was badly scalded by a pan of boiling water. She has scars from her neck to her waist and down her arm, and is very self-conscious about them, she is always covered up, whatever the weather. This has very much affected how she deals with relationships.

When Hal tells Izzy he loves her she does not believe him, and is scared of risking her feelings, only for him to get bored with her in a few weeks or months. She takes a lot of persuading. There are quite a few hurdles to be jumped before they can settle down to a life together! Rosie does everything she can to wreck their relationship, not least because Hal is a billionaire, for her the money was the big attraction.

This is a very emotional story, Serenity is so good at writing emotion. Despite the fact of Hal’s great wealth this is still a ‘real’ story, you can believe that it could happen. Very well worth reading.

This was a sexy, touching read.

"I've been thinking about someone else...For a long time now. I can't get her out of my head."

Izzy Fitzgerald and Hal King have been friends since they were kids but they never crossed the line. Izzy never thought the gorgeous, girl-magnet Hal would be interested in her, and Hal was warned off Izzy as a teen. Fast forward to the present day and they're both nearly 30. They work together as vets and are the very best of friends. Hal's just broken up with his live-in girlfriend and startles Izzy with a stunning revelation. He's in love with her.

"I can see I'm going to have to spell things out for you in our relationship. I've loved you for years, you crazy girl."

Hal had his work cut out for him convincing Izzy that what he felt for her was not just a passing interest or because he'd never had her before. I found this quite frustrating. There was no one else who knew him as well as she did, and I hurt for Hal that she would think that he was that fleeting or shallow and that he would play with her affections so carelessly. I swooned over Hal. He was gorgeous, tender, patient and so hot! He was incredibly sensitive and I loved his soft, gentle approach towards Izzy. I loved that he was willing to wait and go at her pace. He was a pretty perfect guy! Izzy had image issues stemming, not just from a childhood accident, but also from a past boyfriend. I loved that she let her guard down with Hal but her insecurities completely clouded what she genuinely knew about her best friend. Overall, an enjoyable, very sexy read.

I loved the Three Kings series, so I was so excited to hear that Serenity had a new series that takes up the lives of the next generation on Kings. The setting at an animal rescue and veterinary center is perfect. Lots of compelling dogs, horses and animal rescues. Hal King is the hunky vet with a rich family and a reputation of being a womanizer. OK, well deserved reputation. Izzy is his workaholic and reticent best friend and fellow vet. Turns out that they both secretly harbor love for each other but are afraid of losing their best friends status. Can friends become lovers and return to friendship if it doesn't work out? Izzy doubts it. And Hal's spoiled brat of an ex-girlfriend is creating problems at the sanctuary. This book is full of heart, romance, steamy sex and secrets that threaten to derail the romance. As usual in Serenity's stories, she is not afraid to take on serious subjects. Izzy carries lots of scars, some hidden and some on the surface, that make her hold back.
The story also introduces us to a cast of great characters at the sanctuary that I hope will appear in the next few books. I can see lots of wonderful possibilities. And it updates us with the lives of the King family and all their good work. What a great continuation of one of her most beloved set of books!

My Best Friend, the Billionaire begins a new series by Serenity Woods about cousins related through the King family. See The Three Wise Men series. The cousins run a veterinary/pet rescue service called Noah’s Ark. This first book introduces the characters and focuses on the longtime relationship between veterinarians Hal King and Izzy Fitzgerald. Friends since childhood Hal long ago was warned off by Izzy’s brother. But as the friends enter their 30s, Hal decides he has waited long enough...Izzy is meant for him and he just has to convince her he is serious. Of course, the path to a HEA can never go smoothly in a romance novel, but I won’t tell you what obstacles must be overcome in this one. The story is a sweet one with lots of spice...it is written by Serenity Woods, after all ...and she certainly knows how to make an e-reader smoking hot. Written in alternating first person accounts readers see the insecurities of the participants and are privy to angst from both sides. Fortunately for this reader the story kept moving forward so I never felt I was being bogged down by all those internal machinations. I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy of this book and have no problem recommending it for your reading pleasure. I am anxiously awaiting the next installment.

Once again, I read through the night because I didn't want I put this book down.

I could completely understand Izzy's sense of vulnerability. I thought Hal was really sensitive to her needs and thoughtful with how he tried to put Izzy at ease. Most women would love to have a Hal!

One issue with the book was the situation with Hal's ex, Rosie. Hal was much too nice and generous considering her behavior. Izzy was so insecure, I wondered how far Rosie was going to take things, and if Izzy had ever planned to mention it. I wish Hal had come down harder on Rosie. Lastly, it seemed like the Rosie situation was tied up to neatly and quickly for the type of craziness she was displaying.

The other thing that would have been nice was a map showing the relationships to the Three Kings and the step siblings. I read the Three Kings books and found myself getting a bit confused.

This was a sweet, sexy, romantic book that also emphasized friendships, loyalty, and family. With a little bit of crazy thrown in for additional excitement.

I voluntarily read and reviewed the Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

What a great start to the new series from Serenity Woods and in these stories we get to meet the children of her Three Wise Men which was a series I loved. I really believe you will love Hal and Izzy even if you haven’t read the series that this is spin off from.
Hal and his cousins run the Ark, an animal rescue and veterinary practice and Hal is the resident vet also known as the dog whisperer. Izzy and Hal have been friends since childhood and he has loved her since he was 11 years old and even though she feels the same neither have acted on their feelings because they are both scared to ruin the friendship they share. How will Izzy react when her best friend confesses his true feelings will she be honest with him or will she run for the hills .......
After reading My Best Friend, the Billionaire I’m excited for the rest of this series, I love how this author introduces us to her new characters as well giving us peaks into the life’s of the characters from previous books, with every story I feel like I’m coming home to visit family and friends. This book is all about friendships and if you are looking for a sweet romance this is the book for you.

Hal and Izzy are friends for 18 years. 18 long years of having feelings for one another that neither one knew about. They are both veterinarians and take their jobs seriously. They have a love of animals and helping them as much as they can. So, it's only fitting that they spend more time together than not, and the more time they spend together as adults, the more the feelings start to arise.
However, Izzy just can't believe that Hal would like her "that way". She feels she isn't up to his standards as he is a lady's man. Hal has to work pretty hard to convince her. But, eventually, she starts to believe him, only to doubt those feelings again as she is starting to be harassed by an ex-girlfriend of his. This story makes you look at yourself and try to see what others see in you, not only on the outside but on the inside. Hal loved both of those aspects of Izzy, it just took her a little while to believe it. Great start to the new series.

This is the 1st book in the Billionnaire Kings series which follows the children & family of The Wise Men, the founding brothers of the We Three Kings foundation. This story is about the relationship between Brock & Erin's son Hal and Lizzy.

Lizzy met Hal on her first day at high school, and fell in love with him there and then. Despite her love for him, Hal is the opposite of Lizzy, confident, sexy, extremely rich and not to forget gorgeous. Lizzy is quiet, poor and scarred - emotionally and physically.

Lizzy has dreamt of kissing Hal, of his hands on her body, of sliding between the bedsheets, but she has had to train herself not to think of him in that way as he can never be hers.

Hal is never with a girl for long and Lizzy wants deep and meaningful, not to mention long term. She knows that Hal would break her heart and she would never recover from that.

So when one day out of the blue he says that he has fallen in love with someone, and that that someone is her, what will she do?

Some quotes that made me dislike this book:

"Occasionally he exhibited signs of his father's Asperger's syndrome". Im sorry, what? That's not how Aspergers work.

"Everyone makes mistakes, and he's just a guy, when it comes to it, and guys are dense and clueless. It's up to women to rise above it, to lift their chins and pretend everything's okay". This is something you would see in one of those "male authors writing women" stories, and not so much by a woman. Raise the standard, because saying things like this is degrading to women, to men and to everyone.

I also really did not connect with the writing, it felt very detached, analytical, had weird imagery used that just felt uncomfortable to read (and seeing it was supposed to be a spicy scene that didn't help the book.)

And the blrub, really had little to do with the plot here. Him being rich wasn't talked about much or shown, and she was not poor or really struggling like the blurb alluded to.

I did like the setting being in New Zealand, that was a positive, but probably won't read more by this author anytime soon.

3/5 I think this had the potential to be great but wasn't written in a way that could've made it great

first im not one for flashback scenes but I feel like we should've seen them as teens with tension between them, or like scenes when they were in high school realizing how they have feelings for one another

I also feel like they didn't really know each other, usually when I read bff to lovers I feel the bff connection but in this it didn't really feel like it was there it kinda just felt like friends to lovers or even something simpler than that. I get that they were trying to get to know one another on a more intimate level but idk it just felt weird I get iz being a private person but it just seemed like she never shared anything with him

also quick thing why is the word billionaire in the title if he never actually uses his money or act like a billionaire?

I probably won't finish this series anytime soon, overall this was decent though I do wish It was a little better
