From bestselling author Marissa Stapley comes a gripping novel about marriage, loyalty, and the deadly secrets that unravel over the course of a two-week couples’ therapy retreat in Mexico.

We all have thirteen secrets. Five stay buried forever, but the rest will be revealed.

Miles Markell is missing, and everyone is a suspect.

To the guests at The Harmony Resort, Doctors Miles and Grace Markell appear to be a perfect power couple. They run a couples’ therapy retreat in a luxurious resort in the Mayan Riviera where they help spouses deal with their marriage struggles.

Johanna and Ben’s relationship looks great on the surface, but in reality, they don’t know each other at all. Shell and Colin fight constantly—Colin is a workaholic, and Shell always comes second—but what has really torn them apart is too devastating to talk about. When both couples begin Harmony’s intensive therapy program, it becomes clear that Harmony is not all that it seems—and neither are Miles and Grace. What are they hiding, and what price will these couples pay for finding out their secrets?

As a powerful hurricane descends on the coast, trapping both the hosts and their guests, confidences are revealed, loyalties are tested, and not one single person—or marriage—will ever be the same.

A gripping exploration of relationships and trust, The Last Resort is a propulsive read about all the big truths we hide, even from ourselves.

I enjoyed The Last Resort but it took so long for us to get to know the characters and to understand their problems, that it was hard to care much about them. And then when push comes shove (there is a pun in there about the book), it just goes on and on in such a way that it begins to be funny. This was a fun but over the top read when it comes to the fate of Miles but it couldn't have happened to a more suitable man.

At the same time that it comes out on social media that Miles Markell has sexually abused and assaulted dozens of women and that he was the leader of a cult of women in Texas, who worshiped the ground he walked on, he goes missing in a category 4 hurricane on the luxury resort island where he and his wife held intensive couples therapy. There are secrets galore among the three couples that we get to know, with a side order of Ruth, Grace's assistant. Miles and his wife Grace have their own secrets despite claiming to help couples improve their marriages, Johanna and Ben are there for help after a crisis at Johanna's job, that has her shutting down completely in regards to their marriage, and Shell and Colin, once so very close, have built a wall between each other after a tragedy that neither of them can get over. And while the couples are working on their marriages, or not, there is a literal big storm brewing, to add more chaos to the relationships among the couples.

Thank you to Graydon House, the author, and Goodreads Giveaway for this entertaining book.

A fantastic read, this book is definitely different, from no chapter headings to celebrity articles. It was a bit of getting used to in the beginning for me. Once day 3 comes around and some secrets are being revealed, I couldn’t read fast enough. I couldn’t guess any of their secrets, especially Johanna and Drs. Markell’s. I like how the cover is peaceful and the story is anything but. I started reading this book with only the knowing about marriage counseling, but oh boy, what a ride I was given. I like following the three point of views, more so with Johanna and Shell because Grace is more in the church side. With #metoo hashtags, I thought this book is based on modern day, but I don’t understand why church is still strict on homosexuality.

This book is told in the third person point of view following an unknown man as he struggles to breathe and calling out to Jezebel. Then an article from celebrity scoop talks about the celebrity marriage counselor Dr. Miles Markell has gone missing during Hurricane Christine. There was also a mystery therapy session between a man and a woman about how each person holds on to 13 secrets, with 5 kept locked away. The woman has been seeing the doctor for a year and now is ready to tell her one big secret. The story finally begins with the two weeks marriage counseling starting from day 1 where an email was sent out to the couples from Dr. Miles, 52 and his wife Dr. Grace Markell, 35 to welcome them. The first couple readers follow are Johanna, ex-social worker who experienced trauma at work and Ben, lawyer as they ride the bus with other couples, (12 couples in all) to the counseling’s luxury bungalow in Mexico. The second couple are Shell and Colin where Shell is often angry that her husband doesn’t look straight at her. The third view is of Dr. Grace Markell, who walks around with a veneer of perfection but has several secrets of her own.

The Last Resort is very well written and offer a unique read. I don’t read too many women’s psychological fiction and I like that this book is different from any others I have read. I like Shell and Colin. Their struggles are realistic where others can relate to. I like the psychological aspect of the story because a person can feel really small and lose all self confidence when they are repeatedly told that they are worthless. I like the ending and I didn’t even expect goody Ben to involve himself in the tangle. I love a story with an epilogue and this book has it. This book kept me up many nights and I highly recommend everyone to read it.

Pro: secrets, lies, marriage counseling, therapy sessions, mystery, psychological abuse,

Con: church seems to contradicts the modern day twitter hashtags

I rate it 5 stars!

Entertaining, brisk, & compelling!

THE LAST RESORT by MARISSA STAPLEY was an interesting premise with a fabulous setting that held my interest right from the very start. I was immediately hooked and intrigued but felt like I was reading something very similar to some previous books that I have recently read though.

Although I thought some of the reveals were a little predictable I was thoroughly entertained and found this to be a very good, enjoyable, quick and easy read. I thought the whole story came together really well for an exciting and satisfying end.

Thank you so much to NetGalley, Simon & Schuster Canada and Marissa Stapley for the complimentary copy.

“[...] the average person has thirteen secrets that they live with-five of which they’ve never told a soul”
― Marissa Stapley, The Last Resort

This book is about the Harmony Resort. Located in Mexico, this stunning resort is right on the ocean and offers an upscale resort experience with a five star restaurant located on premises and breathtaking views of the sea.

Palm trees abound and the luxury bungalows make it certain that this vacation will be one that all visitors remember forever.

OK..Question..would you go to this resort?

But wait..hold on! There are of coarse some rules..strict non negotiable rules.

Couples only.

Couples in dysfunctional relationships only.

Couples in dysfunctional relationships who want to get help with their struggling relationships only.

No cell phones allowed.

No alcohol.

No access to outside world.

You must spend your time at Harmony getting to know your partner..and let your partner get to know you!!

You must concentrate on revealing your innermost secrets and thoughts..and your partner must do the same.

This vacation will either make your marriage..or break it.

So come one, come all! Come to the Harmony Resort! All classes are run by reality super couple Grace and Miles. You may have seen them on "The View"? They are a super happy couple who have dedicated THEIR LIVES to helping others and guiding them to experience the magic of a harmonious relationship..one that Grace and Miles have.

Not.

For..sigh..it is all a lie..at least the relationship of Grace and Miles is.

These couples will be tested like never before. In a beautiful resort in a tropical paradise. A resort run by a maniac and sexual deviant with a gigantic hurricane barreling towards the island..which of coarse none of the paying guests know about.

Would you go?

Ha! I had wanted to read this for so long..and read I did all last night! While I liked the book, I had some issues too. I rated it a 3.5 of 5. Pretty good rating. A rating of three is tough because that could mean anything from 'I disliked it" to "it was OK".

In this case, it means this was such a fun book but I had to suspend ALOT of disbelief.

Positives..the plot is exactly what I just wrote and oh how I loved it. I am a fan of creepy books like this. I also really felt for some of the characters. Shell is my favorite. I just really connected with her and felt so bad for her.

The descriptive writing was awesome! I felt like I was on vacation myself!

But..the main negative is I did not believe much of what went on. Toward the end, it got a wee bit over the top. What about all the other guests? They did not notice any of this?

I did enjoy this though. It was a fun ride and I think most fans of psychological thrillers will want to read this. I know I am glad I finally did! 3.5 stars to a fun and inventive book.

The Harmony Resort in the Mayan Riviera sounds like a luxurious resort and Doctor Miles and Grace Markell appear to be the perfect hosts and couple to the guests. Things are not what they seem here. The guests are not here to read on the beach and soak up the sun. They are there is repair their broken marriages through couples therapy.

Marissa Stapley creates some interesting couple here all with their own personal conflicts and secrets they are keeping. The tension and emotions rise as a hurricane descends on them and the secrets start to come out. I enjoyed the dynamics here between the character and I was drawn into their conflicts and secrets and I found myself rooting for the couples.

There is a mystery here and the suspense increases with the search to find what happened and everyone is a suspect. I was left guessing right up to the end and thought it all came together well.

Mini Review

The Last Resort may be your last resort to check into to fix your marriage! That is if you trust the outward appearance of power couple Drs. Miles and Grace Markell.

Couples in this novel arrive at this lush retreat with the hope to reconnect with their spouse, some just come along for the ride, and some have something to hide. A perfect combination of guests that make for interesting group therapy sessions and experimental treatment methods put in place.

What most don't expect is to be separated in different bungalows from their spouses if necessary.
Leave all your meds, phones and troubles behind. Sign at the dotted line and fall into the treatment plan outlined just for you. The doctors know what they are doing or shall I say, one of them has other motives.

Interestingly twisted and sick, this novel gives the creeps. Readers sensitive to abuse of physical or verbal kind should know that theme comes up as part of the plot in therapy sessions and the main characters.

Written well and hair raising, the ending of the novel will come to a surprise. One I had hoped so for some of the characters. Diversity rounds out the mystery that uncovers part of the corruption and makes the characters shine.

Entertaining, a bit shocking and a great beach read this summer!

The Last Resort by Marissa Stapley is a fun read. It was a book that I read quite quickly, with short chapters and broken up with transcripts from an interview and newspaper articles. There are a variety of characters in this story, not all of them are very likeable at all. Some you warm up to, some you despise from the start. A resort for couples therapy with no access to the outside world - what could go wrong??!

So much goes wrong as it happens! Miles and Grace Markell are famous for helping couples reconnect and save their marriages. Their Harmony Resort in the Mayan Rivera is beautiful and secluded. They seem to be the perfect couple on the outside but nothing is as it seems at Harmony. The story focuses on our hosts and 2 couple who need help to repair their breaking marriages. Joanna and Ben seem to have it all where as Shell and Ben are always fighting. Both couples have their secrets and a hidden past. As they begin to dig, emotions surface and tension builds. But then a devastating tropical storm heads their way and they will all need to work together to survive.

This book will make you laugh, it will make you think about how lucky you are. I really enjoyed reading it and will look for more by this author. Thanks to Allen and Unwin for my advanced copy of this book. All opinions are my own and are in no way biased.

** Mini Review **

This book was a wild and crazy ride! An island resort, couples trying to repair their marriage, secrets, lies, black male, and a hurricane. This book was SO entertaining. It got a little over-the-top at times, but I was completely invested in the madness. I thought this was going to be a book about couples therapy and some secrets, but it turned into something completely different. A huge swerve and I was there for it! Major drama with a satisfying ending.

The harmony Resort promises to help marriages that are in trouble. It is run by Drs. Miles and Grace Markell and set in luxury on the Mayan Rivieria. Of the group attending, the resort the story focuses on two couples in particular, Johanna and Ben and Shell and Colin. It soon becomes apparent that Harmony is not all it seems and neither are those running the program.
I waded through, and it felt like wading, roughly a third of this book before I finally put it aside. None of the characters were likeable and they all came across as stereotypical. Maybe it was because I didn’t like or care enough about any of them, that I kept mixing up the characters and had trouble distinguishing one from the other. After I put it aside and felt no compulsion to pick it back up again.
I’m sure there will be people out there who will enjoy this and find it interesting, but I was not one of them. I was bored from the start, didn’t like any of the characters and could not connect with them in any way. So not finishing this one. For that reason not going to rate it at all. Sorry Allen & Unwin, who provided me with a free copy for review purposes, this one was not a good read for me.

The scene is set from the front cover of The Last Resort by Marissa Stapley. With an exotic feel cult like retreat, a nest of secrets, lies and psychological behavior, this novel certainly sets an intriguing premise. Based on a tropical idyll in the Mayan Riviera, a number of couples battle it out to solve the complex problems navigating their lives, relationships and future happiness.

The Last Resort provides us with an eye opening glimpse into the complicated lives of those who come to stay and those who work at Harmony Resort. This is a couple’s retreat, where struggling partners can work to repair their difficult relationships, with the aid of an exotic setting and a celebrity counsellor. When the story opens, we meet one couple, Joanna and Ben. This couple has managed to maintain a false view of their marriage to outsiders. While it may appear that this couple’s relationship is perfect, as individuals they know very little about each other. On the other hand, Shell and Colin, another couple staying at the resort, rarely agree on anything. This constantly bickering couple have come to blows over Colin’s attitude to work and his inability to put his private life before his professional life. As the book progresses, a pertinent secret is aired, striking at the very heart of this couple. Harmony represents the last ditch attempt these couples have of burying the hatchet and making their relationships thrive instead of falter. But Harmony has secrets of its own and when these are aired, the impact will be felt by everyone. Adding to the tense atmosphere of The Last Resort is the impending storm that is slowly but surely making its way to Harmony. This powerful tropical storm has the power to transform the lives and relationships of these people – for the long term.

I was surprised when The Last Resort landed on my review desk. Marissa Stapley is an author I’ve not come across before, despite the fact that she has penned two acclaimed novels. At this late stage of the reading year it was a blessing to be introduced to a new writer. I would definitely be interested in exploring more of Stapley’s work in the near future.

The Last Resort is a women’s fiction title with mystery and suspense elements. The book takes an interesting format, as it deviates from the standard one thread style narrative. It begins with a scene of a man crying out for a ‘Jezebel’ on the crashing shores of a beach. We don’t know who the man is and what the reference to Jezebel could indicate. It is then followed by an article from Celebrity Scoop.com which outlines the impact of Hurricane Christine on the Mayan Riviera, resulting in the missing person’s case of celebrity counsellor Miles. An interview transcript follows these introductory pieces. The narrative is divided into days, rather chapter breaks. There are eight days covered in total, followed by an epilogue, which traces two months after the final events of the book. This varied narrative format extends upon the story, carefully revealing pertinent information about the dark story at hand. This multimedia format also worked to heighten the tension and suspense thread within the book.

The Last Resort read a little like a Liane Moriarty novel, it is an example of a domestic noir novel. In some respects I could see the similarities between The Last Resort and Moriarty’s most recent novel, Nine Perfect Strangers. While one of the characters in The Last Resort enabled me to draw comparisons to one key protagonist in Big Little Lies. I think this book will sit well with Moriarty fans, with its intriguing prose, shady characters, complicated relationships and resort style setting. For me, I detested so many of the characters that I just couldn’t develop a bond with any of them. In the end I didn’t really care if they salvaged their relationships, or repaired their downward spiralling lives.

Marissa Stapley tied up the ends of this novel carefully by the close of the book. It is quite the tumultuous journey, marked by secrets, lies, underhanded tactics, deception, abuse, betrayal, revelations, expose and sinister intent. It also gives the reader a bird’s eye view of couple’s counselling options which are available to those who can afford access to these high end celebrity retreats.

This one did get off to a sluggish start for me and the characters didn’t earn my sympathies at all. However, The Last Resort redeems itself with a good array of suspect characters, an intricate plot, a creative narrative format and a simmering atmosphere. Marissa Stapley’s third and latest novel may attract the attention of general contemporary fiction fans and those readers who don’t mind a touch of suspense noir.

The Last Resort didn’t end up being my cup of tea. I’m all for psychological thrillers based on secrets, but there were too many improbable secrets here for me. Grace and Miles run a resort in Mexico for couples trying to reunite. The stay even includes therapy sessions. But it turns out that they have problems of their own. Big problems that affect their ability to help their guests. Then there are couples Joanne and Ben, and Shell and Colin, who show up at the resort with their own secret problems. Lurking in the background is the threat of a big tropical storm — that Miles is keeping secret from the residents. The strands of secrets seemed all a bit too disparate and melodramatic. And the resolution at the end a bit to tidy given all the drama. I probably should have given up on this one, but I’m never good at giving up on books. And I wanted to give this Canadian book a try. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an opportunity to read an advance copy.

Having read some great reviews about this book I probably went into it with some high expectations and for me it fell a little flat.
The setting is a 'couples resort' in South America, but run by husband and wife psychologist to help couples to repair their relationships. I found the whole couple therapy interactions a bit cringe worthy. It soon becomes obvious that it is the therapists themselves that that need the most help.
On top of this a tropical cyclone is bearing down on them. It was all a bit over the top, but still an interesting read.
Thank you Allen & Unwin for the uncorrected proof copy of this book.

Many thanks to Graydon for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review

Honestly, I was inches away from DNF-ing this. It's not that it was bad but not that is was good either. The Last Resort takes place at a marriage counseling retreat, which is a very unique and creative setting for a thriller. The resort had a very spooky and suspicious vibe that kept me constantly biting my nails. I was constantly waiting for something to pop out from around the corner. And while there were some creepy, violent and disturbing parts, I came away rather disappointed.

As I said earlier, I almost dnf-ed this. Mainly, because it wasn't hitting my expectiations but also because I was simply not clicking with the characters. Agan, it's not that they were bad or dry; I just couldn't find anything in me that connected with them. It was really this way for the entire book.

It wasn't bad or poorly written. It just didn't work for me: Tucker. Maybe it was situatuonal. Maybe it was the audio. I don't know. I might never know. What I do know is that some books work for me and some don't. So, don't let this review sway you from reading this. I don't decide if you like it or not. Happy reading!

Thank you, Marissa Stapley and Simon & Schuster Canada, for a copy of The Last Resort, in exchange for my honest review.  This title releases June 18.

Harmony is a highly regarded resort in the Mayan Riviera, with a focus on providing therapy to couples.  Run by the infamous Grace and Miles Markell – couple goals; at least that is what they want their clientele to believe.  When a group of couples arrives for their stay they are in awe with the beauty that is the resort and its grounds and their glamourous hosts; but things aren’t always how they seem.  With a huge storm brewing, these couples’ idyllic therapy ‘session’ turns into more damage than repair to their respective marriages…and not just because a storm is coming.

When a book opens with a mysterious death and the aftermath of a tropical storm, you know it will be a great read.  This storyline was engaging right from page 1 with its Agatha Christie vibes peering through the incredible storm that was brewing near and on the island itself.

Ms. Stapley, you are 2 for 2 for incredible reads! After reading Things to Do When It’s Raining last summer, I knew you were my kind of writer.  A truly gifted writer who can clearly master both womens’ fiction and the thriller scene seamlessly.

Interesting to note is that The Last Resort was more than a suspense thriller, it dove deeper than that; it also took a close look at the difference between what people are like when they’re in relationships versus who they are as individuals, and the secrets and lies they not only keep from their partners but from themselves. This book will give you all the feels of a thriller but with much more substance.

This was an exciting read and will make a perfect summer binge – grab a copy on June 18 and jump on the buzz bandwagon this one is sure to create.

The Last Resort by Marissa Stapley

The Last Resort was gripping and suspenseful.

It’s a drama about unhappily married couples that go to stay at The Harmony Resort located on a tropical island off Mexico’s Mayan Riviera.

Celebrity therapist Dr Miles Markell and his wife Grace repair broken marriages and they offer an intensive two-week couples therapy program with no access to the outside world in this secluded and exquisite location.

All suitcases will be searched for hidden alcohol and drugs, who would of known? Things are not what they seem, they’re somewhat twisted and everyone is hiding secrets, including the hosts.

The guests will also encounter the addition of an impending deadly tropical storm as they become trapped with no way off the island.

The writing was expertly atomospheric, I could almost see myself on that beautiful tropical beach. I found the characters were well executed and the story was fast paced and had an enjoyable ending.

I wish to thank Allen & Unwin for providing me with a copy of this book for an honest review

When I started reading The Last Resort I immediately had Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty vibes! (Anyone else?) Both with the resort storyline and a villian in the midst. Happy to say the two are nothing alike and this will keep you guessing until the big reveal.

The setting is gorgeous (let's go!), the plot is entertaining and the characters are definitely very interesting to say the least. I enjoyed the layout of the chapters with the addition of the celebrity scoop, emails and dialogue without names (you'll see!) ... Miles Markell made me want to scream and throw things, again, you'll see. Ha!

A huge thank you to both Marissa Stapley and S&S Canada for my copy!

This book was flawless.
As eerie, psychological thrillers go I can't think of a single one that has pulling me into the plot as fast and as efficiently. The wring is good, the setting sends shivers up my spine and the characters have a depth, a three dimensional to them that I think is exceptional.

Set in The Harmony Resort, which promises a last ditch, intensive plan for struggling marriages, the polished nature of the resort, the counseling sessions and the isolated setting in Mexico were a perfect basis for the story. To this boutique 'last resort counseling holiday' come a number of couples and I won't itemise them, the book does a great job of introducing them in a wider setting, then zooming in, more and more closely on the ones that will play the biggest parts in the drama, I am not going to spoil that great job.

The beginning of the book uses multimedia to set the scene; flashbacks, emails and an interview with an unidentified subject - we guess who it might be, but the guess changes... This beginning with disparate parts worked really well to suck me in to the story, but it does not continue throughout and I was glad about that, there have been too many novels recently with the multimedia approach and I am getting a little tired of it. The interviews do continue, and they are an excellent way of building uncertainty and tension in the reader, though they are only a very small part of that. The structure of the book is of 'parts'. Day one, day two ect and within every day we have separate sections for the different couples and their experiences. I found this structure to work really well with the story. Despite having so many different individuals, couples and storylines to draw together, the sections were just long enough, just interesting and vivid enough, to create strong characters fast. The teasers about their history were just revealing enough to leave you wanting more - but never annoyingly so and never boring.

This was probably one of the most focused psychological thrillers I have read; we know that everyone is hiding something, we know it is going to end badly, because of the many layers of secrets, as a reader I had an edge-of-the-seat feeling as I read it.

The glassy, evangelical, style of the staff, as well as the setting of Harmony resort worked for me perfectly. Glossy people and overenthusiastic seminar leaders are eerie enough in their own right if you ask me, they are perfect here. Artificial, heavily manicured 'heaven resorts' with their sterile over manicured pools, twisty paths (to give the impression of more space) lined with exotic plants with no habitat value at all - these places have never been my thing. I am more like one of the characters, Joanna, who would rather be on a cycling tour of Vietnam.

The scenarios of 'intensive' counseling sessions, where emotions are brought to the surface are a perfect background for the strange events that creep up on the characters. A slow growing unease develops in the artificial setting where all smart phones, laptops and tablets are taken away from the guests, to allow them to focus on their marriages.

Well, the setting is perfect and the characters are good. I especially appreciated the way in which the character's problems were given depth, and the people themselves became three dimensional through the therapy. While the traumas that shape characters can be treated a bit glibly in some books, here I thought that the psychological element of the story was very believable and very well done. I believed in those characters and so I got chills over what was happening to them.

Finally - that ending! Perfect. It was complex, fascinating in a Gordian knot sort of way. I thought I saw all kinds of endings coming, but I was surprised and engrossed as the last part of it all unfolded. The ending put a perfect seal on a really excellent book. I don't read all that many psychological thrillers, and I can judge them a bit harshly, but this one was definitely the best I had read for quite some time. If you like this type of book, I hope you love it as much as I did. Only, leave yourself some time so you don't have to put it down while the ending is unfolding, it will hurt if you have to!

With many thanks to Allen & Unwin for an Advance Reading Copy of this top notch, thrilling story.

The Last Resort tells the story of a marriage counseling resort lead by a questionably perfect couple and following the troubles of 4 of the guests. The secrets everyone is hiding from not only their spouses but often themselves are slowly revealed and with hurricane approaching, things take a dire turn. The book opens with a death/possible murder then flashes back to the start of the retreat. This reveal gives the reader pause to question who has the motive and who actually is hiding what.

Giving me major 9 perfect strangers vibes (which I loved), this story was easy to get lost in and I had to know how it ended! I loved the women in this one but I don't think the male characters were given any real thought, kind of just background roles.

I'm giving this one 3 1/2 stars. It was enjoyable and the setting was great but I think I was just expecting something else. The opening scene and description made me think I was picking up a murder mystery/suspense novel. In reality this was more of a social experiment, look into the problems of marriages, and the secrets the people were hiding. Stapley did a great job it just wasn't what I was looking for.

A slow, plodding book with no likeable characters. Also it seemed like the author was trying to copy Nine Perfect Strangers, which was an incredible book. I strongly recommend reading that book instead.

The Last Resort is the third novel by best-selling American author, Marissa Stapley. Located on the Mayan Riviera in Mexico, the Harmony Resort is touted as the last resort for failing marriages. Celebrity therapist Dr Miles Markell and his wife Grace and their team at the luxury resort repair marriages, a dozen couples at a time. It takes just two weeks. Their own marriage is, of course, perfect.

The reader knows, though, from the first pages, that after Hurricane Christine has passed through the area, Miles is missing, with grave fears held for his safety. Trouble in paradise, indeed! But before all that, the couples, with all their problems and quirks and secrets, arrive: alcoholic Shell Williams and her workaholic husband, Colin; social worker Johanna Haines and her District Attorney husband, Ben Reid. The other eight couples, nameless and featureless in the background.

From vague hints drip-fed into the narrative, the reader gradually learns what crippling secrets (and there are quite a few) these three couples are holding, and how their lives have been affected, until things build to an explosive climax, concurrent with a category four hurricane making things wet and wild.

It’s quite clever of Stapley to situate her resort in Mexico where the (accredited?) therapists are able to be unprofessional, unethical and inappropriate without oversight from any professional body; and where clients can be made to sign a (legal? binding?) contract with some surprise conditions. What does become quickly clear is that all the therapists are as much in need of therapy as the clients they are treating.

Nonetheless, the credibility is stretched: would DA Ben really sign a contract with no more than a cursory glance? Would two therapists and one intern dealing with twelve couples actually have time for all those dramatics and dummy spits? Certainly, the Haines/Reid and Williams couples seem to be getting more than their share of attention.

Stapley’s characters are perhaps a little stereotypical: a predator and some enablers; the sexually repressed, the grieving, the traumatised, the weak, the guilty; lots of angst there. Some are immediately detestable; others eventually evoke some sympathy.

Stapley uses multiple formats besides the conventional narrative to convey the story: blog, email, therapy session transcript, book excerpt and flashback. The very neat resolution is undeniably Agatha Christie inspired. Get past the slow start, suspend disbelief and it’s a fairly entertaining read.

Certainly more 3.5. Definitely darker than expected. Less a whodunnit.

The Last Resort by Marissa Stapley is a good beach read, if not a bit predictable. The Harmony Resort on the Mayan Riviera is run by celebrity marriage counselors Miles and Grace Markell. Couples who are struggling with their marriage go to the "last resort" to get the help they need to repair their relationship. Two couples, Johanna and Ben and Shell and Colin, both arrive at the Harmony Resort with seemingly unsolvable marriage issues. Johanna has experienced a serious trauma, which has caused her and Ben to drift apart to the point that they feel that they don't know each other at all. Shell and Colin are always fighting: Colin is a workaholic and Shell's drinking has gotten out of control and something in their past is threatening to tear them apart. It is clear that both couples are hiding many secrets and they may not be the only ones, as secrets seem to surround Miles and Grace Markell as well. When a dangerous storm touches down on the resort, secrets will be exposed and no one will go unscathed by the destruction.

I enjoyed the premise of the Last Resort, thought it did remind me of other recent novels in which therapy/counseling and the secrets it exposes are the main concept. While I did find some of it to be predictable, there were a couple of reveals that did surprise me. I also thought that Marissa Stapley created some complex and flawed characters and I did enjoy reading about them and learning their secrets. This is definitely a good beach read; it's enjoyable and quick.

Thank you to Netgalley and Graydon House for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

On Amazon, as I write this, there are very few five star reviews on this one. *shrug whatever*

I loved it.

No, it's not action packed (and usually I love wham bam thank you ma'am action). It's more insidious than that. The author slowly but surely builds a story where the readers realizes there's so much rot under the beautiful surface.

I loved most of our characters - and hated the ones I was supposed to hate. I wanted everything to turn out okay and wanted one person to pay a painful price.

Honestly, the author told a good story here. You just need to be willing to come along for the ride.

2.5 stars (rounded up)

"..the average person has thirteen secrets that they live with-five of which they've never told a soul. That was our focus, at the resort: secrets"

Thrill Level: ☆

Drama: ☆☆☆☆

DNF at 116 pages 🙊🤦‍♀️

The author does a good job at leaving a trail of crumbs to reel you in, but unfortunately, it wasn't enough to get me hooked.

The premise sounded so promising! I even liked the style, which included emails and a Hollywood gossip article. It just took way too long to get into all the couples' secrets. By then, I no longer cared nor did I connect with any of the characters.

Sorry guys..I really tried, but I just wasn't feelin it.

Interesting premise and fast paced. Changing my review to wanted to dnf at 50%. Just so tired of reading about abusive men or abuse disguised as religion. As I said in my reply to Kat, I ended up skimming through the past abuse and ended up finishing it.
I understand that as heinous as it is, abuse, whether it be physical or verbal or both, is too often a reality. I just really don't want to keep reading about it.That said, the ending worked for me and if the author has other books, I'd be interested in checking them out.
