Game of Kings

Rate this book
Game of Kings is a complex and absorbing prose poem sequence by noted Dallas author, Daryl Scroggins. Intended as an experiment in organic narrative form, this intriguing book uses the archetypes of the villain, the wronged woman, and the quest to map "the project of an individual consciousness attempting to contain a sense of history." Perfect binding with custom black-and-white cover. 48 pages. Afterword by Elana Abernathy.

Really, really liked Scroggins' The Game of Kings. And the eight page interview with the author at the back of the book is just as absorbing as the fictional content. This writer from Dallas combines tremendous imagination with great subtlty and fascinating word choices and sentence structure. I don't really know what makes these "prose poems" as opposed to just prose, perhaps it's the compression of so much being said in so few words but I admire it all the same. What a shame there is so little of Scroggins' fiction writing in print.
