The curse stole her voice, but breaking it may cost everything she holds dear.
Hidden in the northern mountains, Sybil longs for the day when their curse will be broken. Life with only gryphons as company is not easy. She knows that she is the key to returning her brothers to their human forms but doing so may be impossible. Then everything changes when she saves a stranger.
Damian is a hunted man. When he makes the mistake of trying to protect a mysterious and silent girl, his fate takes an unexpected turn. A foreigner, he’s lived on the run for years. As he grows closer to Sybil, he discovers she doesn’t need a voice to speak. However, he cannot forget his haunted past and the gryphons she claims as brothers are eager to see him gone.
With danger closing in on all sides, will Sybil be forced to sacrifice something greater than her voice?
A fantasy retelling of the classic fairytale, Six Swans
Clean romance, adventure, and humor combine to bring classic fairytales and myths to new life in Love's Enchanted Tales, a series of interconnected stand-alone stories. Each story can be read and enjoyed on its own. However, for greatest enjoyment they should be read in order.
I've read Kimberly Rogers' other fairy-tale retellings, and liked several quite a bit. This book just had too many flaws to overlook, though.
1. Insta-love This has got to be the no.1 sin of romance tales. There's no development of the relationship, just an instant trust by Sybil. No attempt to understand Damien better or learn about his past, really? Or to share her own past? How can there be love without understanding?
2. Language barriers & unreasonable speed of learning I get that it's frustrating to have a main character who can't speak, but that frustration is the whole point of the six swans story. Her being able to sign is absolutely cheating, and there is no way Damien should have been able to pick up sign language that quickly (6 weeks, considering that the brothers were around to translate and they tried to keep Sybil and Damien apart). And given that he's an ESL learner on top of that - as a language teacher myself, I just find this so unrealistic it could not be ignored.
3. Grammatical errors Many readers complain that self-published books contain multiple errors. I don't usually mind as much, simply because I do think the ebook formatting makes typos common, but it was really rampant in this book. In particular, sentence separation errors and sentence fragments just littered the text. Combined with the other errors...I did not enjoy this book much.
This is a re-telling of one of the swan stories, where the princes get turned into swans and the sister has to do something that shows her sacrificial love for them. In this story there are six brothers who get cursed to be gryphons and the sister is cursed to be silent. Her brothers won't tell her what she has to do to break her curse, but things work out with a wandering stranger that she ends up doing what needs to be done - and it's a sacrificial act and not just true loves kiss.
In this story we learn that things aren't always what they seem. The stranger isn't who he seems to be by outward appearances; the girl isn't the witch that all the townspeople think her to be, they just don't understand her sign language and silence. Bad things happen because of assumptions!
So much mystery and intrigue awaits you in this book from the very beginning. I💛LOVED all the mythical creatures not only in this book, but mentioned as well. I💛LOVE the romance that develops between Sybil and Damian. Damien tries his best to keep away from Sybil even though they are stuck in the same place with her brothers till a storm passes. The mystery of the curse and how it eventually was broken was very brilliant. I also loved how brave Sybil was in not being able to speak. She sure knew how to get her point across though it was funny at times. Especially when Sybil was interacting with her brothers. Damian and Sybil both come from tragic pasts, but they each find a way to a brighter future together. I VERY HIGHLY recommend this book.
Very simple, straightforward romance. Quiet broody guy with dangerous past finds sweet innocent girl living in isolation. Add six overprotective brothers cursed to be gryphons, and you pretty much have the story right there. The action really picks up when the gargoyles arrive, but that’s nearly to the end of the book. That said, this is a decent, if low-key, retelling of Wild Swans. I have never come across a wild swan retelling that I liked. I only gave this one a shot because gryphons. This was probably the closest I’ve come to liking Wild Swans as a story. I think I just might try some of this author’s other retellings.
First, I found this book to be an enjoyable quick read. This is a unique rendering of Wild Swans and quite good. I ranked this as 4 stars though because the female character seems even more naive than Rapunzel in Disney’s Tangled. While the book is definitely still a good read, it’s not as good/believable as some of the previous books in the series. It is still a solid addition to the series though, especially since it continues to explore the Dragon Wars effects on the other great races.
Contains: kisses and some fighting. This was another entertaining read. I’ve really enjoyed this series so far. This one brings up the horrible state of the kingdom but then there is no resolution to it so I assume the rest is in another book. I didn’t like that the MMC wasn’t honest with everyone. He has plenty of time to tell his story and I hate when relationships aren’t built on honesty. I also found it weird how quickly he picked up sign language (especially since the sign is in a second language for him and he’s somehow able to understand very complex sentences, etc.)
As is consistent with this series, the characters are a joy to discover and the story moves quickly. The ending felt abrupt as did the two main characters ways to communicate. I wish there had been a scene or two to show the development of their communication. Otherwise, a joy to read.
Another great story, layered with tragedy and trust. The heroine has a disability. She cannot speak or even make a sound. The hero doesn't speak her kingdom's language well, and knew Sign Language not at all. Still, they learn to communicate, and to sacrifice much for each other. Well written, captivating story!
I really loved reading this wonderful book! I loved the characters and the plot! I had a hard time putting this wonderful book down! I loved this retelling of the Six Swans! I am looking forward to reading the next book in this wonderful series!
This was an interesting take on a couple of fairytales. The gryphons were an interesting touch. I would rate this sweet and clean, PG for thematic violence.
Hats off to Ms. Rogers for pulling off a story where the two main characters cannot communicate, one being mute the other not knowing the language. I am not as familiar with the Six Swans, however the story remains well told on its own merits.
