Another good example of why I wish we had half stars here - this really is more of a 3.5-ish rating. I have been intrigued by the concept of Four Sigmatic since I first heard about it on a Tim Ferriss podcast, and the explosion in popularity it's seen since seems to indicate that this product is here to stay. I totally believe that plants are capable of far more than we give them credit for, so the idea behind adaptogens and "magic" mushrooms makes a lot of sense to me.

That being said, and as interesting as this book is, I wish there was just more hard science involved here. Tero makes an interesting case but there is no bibliography of research listed to back this up. I'm sure science nerds weren't his target demo with this book, but I really would have appreciated seeing some citation on where exactly his data comes from. I also found it odd that although there's an insert with some nicely shot images of the recipes, there is never a photo or even a sketch corresponding to each of the 10 mushrooms he features here. I wish there had been more images, charts, data, etc. alongside the mushroom descriptions to really educate the reader on the topic.

Still, the total book was quite interesting, especially all manner of creative mushroom recipes at the end that span cocktails, desserts, energy jellies, and more. There are several really interesting culinary combinations and I definitely snapshotted a few to try out later whenever I have some mushroom powders laying around. I'm glad I read this as something to further pique my curiosity into the grandiose culinary and adaptogenic world of mushrooms; I just wish I had more science to bolster the fun stories told here.

A nice little intro into the world of medicinal mushrooms. The author did a great job making the information easy to understand and digest. Plus there are a bunch of unique recipes in the book (like key lime pie with medicinal mushrooms in it - I'm in!).

This is mostly okay, but the recipes and health information offered within them have made me highly skeptical. This is an okay book for someone who knows nothing about edible or medicinal mushrooms and wants to learn a little more. I think it's funny how they praise Stamets and then are like don't buy extracts made from mycelium.

Mostly recipes, some of which are incredibly unique. The first 70 pages or so serve as a light introduction to the health benefits of 10 commonly consumed mushrooms. Would have liked to have seen more references for some of the claims other than "My friend did this and it worked", especially considering the author's status as a mushroom business owner. Other than that, good read. Looking forward to trying out some of these recipes! (will bump my rating from 3 to 4 stars depending on taste and effectiveness)

I liked the book overall, however, I was a bit disappointed with the amount of information/content. More than 2/3 of the book is dedicated to recipes (which is cool, but I would have liked to have known that before I bought the book). Still, love the company and will continue to read their content and buy their products.

Interesting foray into the world of medicinal mushrooms. Wish there were more scientific studies listed, but a simple google search listed many studies. I've read a lot of them. I got this book because of my growing interest in incorporating Reishi and Cordyceps into my diet for their immune system modulation capabilities. A large part of the book listed recipes on incorporating mushrooms into your diet though. If you want an in-depth review of mushrooms choose another book.

This had a lot of cool information! I'm excited to incorporate medicinal mushrooms into my diet and see how they impact my day-to-day life. Lots of yummy-sounding recipes too. Currently working on copying them into my recipe notebook so I can return this one to the library. Definitely recommend for people seeking alternative medicine and healing practices, or anyone who wants a lot of tasty-sounding mushroom meals.

So much great information!! I’m hooked. I want to learn all about healing mushrooms and this was a perfect book to start with 🙂. Book introduces you to 10 medicinal mushrooms, has a few recipes, and teaches you where and how to buy medicinal mushrooms.

I listened to the audiobook while following along in the book and I also took lots of notes.

This book should be a high school requirement. Everyone needs to read this.

Well I crammed through this in an afternoon. I think it would have amazed me more if I knew less about mycology, but a lot of this was just reiterations of things I had already read about. I think it's excellent for people who don't have a scientific vocabulary or who don't know much about those funky friends, for me, I'm just here for that vegan cordyceps cheesecake recipe.

This is an excellent reference for those who are interested in learning more about the healing powers and benefits of mushrooms. It was written simply and was easy to understand. I also saved a number of recipes. And for the people who complained that the book is full of too many recipes, that’s hard to understand. The cover clearly says that the book contains 50 recipes.

Keep in mind, book gives a brief overview of 10 prominent medicinal mushrooms in first 100 pages, then a significant portion of the book is a recipe section.

Some interesting tidbits, but should have been a pamphlet. I like the guy's product, but it just didn't necessitate a book.

5 stars!

"Healing Mushrooms: A Practical and Culinary Guide to Using Mushrooms for Whole Body Health" by Tero Isokauppila is an absolute gem for anyone interested in the world of medicinal mushrooms. As someone who has been using Lion's Mane & Chaga for some time, I found this book incredibly informative and to the point. It truly is THE book for beginners!

I've been using Chaga tea inconsistently for a long time, but after understanding its benefits through this book, I've ordered a dual-extracted Chaga that I'm so excited about. Additionally, I'm looking forward to adding Tremella, Reishi, Turkey Tail, and Cordyceps to my life, thanks to the comprehensive information provided.

This book is packed with so much great information. I'm hooked and eager to learn all about healing mushrooms. It introduces you to ten medicinal mushrooms, includes a few recipes, and provides guidance on where and how to buy medicinal mushrooms. It's short, to the point, and full of practical recipes and uses. While it's not super comprehensive, it's a fantastic starting point.

The author does an excellent job of explaining the uses of ten powerhouse mushrooms, making it easy for anyone to understand their health benefits and applications. What I particularly loved were the real-world examples he provided for each mushroom. These practical insights make it so much easier to see how you can incorporate these powerful fungi into your daily life.

This book was just wonderful. I am so glad that a coworker was able to lend it to me and share what wonderful knowledge that this book contains about mushrooms and the superfood that they are. I loved reading this book and absolutely got so much from the content. I cannot wait to be able to perhaps try all the recipes the book contains as well as learning more about the power of fungi and how they have played a role in society in the past, how they are in the present, and how they will be part of the future.

Yes! Excellent. Full of information on the medicinal action of some of the most well known medicinal fungi. I researched the claims in several leading scientific journals and in the NHS E-library and although- as with most herbs that big pharma can’t make a profit from - they get stuck at the in vitro or small trial stages, I’m personally confident that there is a sound basis for the claims made.

The only shame is that fungi that grow in the wild I. The UK aren’t included. Perhaps an additional book needed?

This is a good intro book with a solid description of important mushroom terminology, and the very basics of the science behind their medicinal properties. I wish they would have went more in-depth in the sections about each type of mushroom. Only about half the book is actually information on the mushrooms, and the other half is just various recipes for incorporating them into your diet. Even though this book was written by the owner of a mushroom supplement/health food company, I was pleasantly surprised that they didn’t try to plug their company throughout the book.

Great information about 10 well researched medicinal mushrooms and how their useful function as adaptogens. Interestingly written with sprinklings of the history of mushrooms, human stories about how their use improved health. Plus the added benefit of recipes to try, though I haven’t tried them yet.

Not the most well written and it was half a recipe book BUT it was wildly informative on the top 10 super mushrooms and their benefits. I thought I knew a lot already about mushrooms but I left realizing I hadn’t known as much as I thought. Also he may be biased but it worked- I want to stock up on every mushroom he mentioned in this book.

I found the actual information on the various mushrooms quite fascinating but the recipes are often needlessly complex and overly healthy. Clearly I’m not the target demographic as I’m a big fan of unhealthy meals. Wish the book had more in depth history and facts about each mushroom but it’s alright for what it is.
I’d say a good introduction to the excellent world of mushrooms.

I liked the book, but I think I had the right expectations for it, which helped. This is half cookbook half learning about 10 specific mushrooms.

It’s a fun and easy read. I think it’s worth reading if you are interested in learning about mycology.

I wanted to like this book, but it felt like it wasn't quite a cookbook, and not quite as informative as an internet blog. For the few mushrooms the book mentioned, there were no pictures. Yet there were full color pictures of a fraction of the recipes... why?

I didn't buy Four Sigmatic products before reading this book but now I sometimes buy Four Sigmatic products. Also I can't believe how many times I passed Turkey Tail on a walk and didn't even blink an eye. I won't be making that mistake again!

Mostly cliff notes on the world of fungi but accessible for the average reader to get them intrigued into the mushroom kingdom. But mostly a recipe book. Excited to continue to explore more mushroom books!

Absolutely fabulous book, it is great for those who are at the beginning of their mushroom adventure. I do wish it had more information on how to do the extracts yourself in place of buying them already made.

Super fast read with lots of great info. Since the book was written by the owner of Four Sigmatic it felt a bit biased....although everything I've had from them also has been hella tasty and made me feel great....so maybe he's just right.
