Aluksi menin vähän lankaan. Ajattelin, että kirjan taustaorganisaatio ”Royal Drawing School” olisi vuosisatoja vanha kunnianarvoinen instituutio, mutta Charles on perustanut sen vuonna 2000, joten ei se nyt niiiin vanha ole. Charlesillahan on tapana välillä huutaa, että maailma seis, tahdon ulos, ja tässä tapauksessa hän oli huolestunut mallipiirtämisen katoamisesta brittiläisestä korkeakouluopetuksesta. Tällä kertaa olen samaa mieltä Charlesin kanssa (arkkitehtuurista ja luomuruuasta voidaan vielä keskustella), ja ihan kiva että hänellä oli taskurahaa tällaisen koulun perustamiseen.

Kirjassa eräs kirjoittaja mainitsee, että ennen taiteilija oli myös käsityöläinen eli pystyi myös tuottamaan teknisesti korkeatasoisia tuotteita. Sitten tämä meni pois muodista, ja pahimmillaan taiteilija vaan taiteilee, ja saattaa välillä muuttua myös toimitusjohtajaksi, joka mahdollisesti teetättää teknisesti hankalat asiat jollain toisella. Tai sitten vaan tekee jotain sinnepäin (idea tärkeintä!). Antiteesinä tähän on tietyissä piireissä tullut muotiin myös ”klassinen piirtäminen”, jossa tehdään todella tarkkaa tulosta 1800-luvun akatemioiden oppien mukaan. Tulos voi vaan olla elotonta ja pikkuisen tylsää. Tämä kirja on jossain siinä välissä, tekninen osaaminen on hyvä olla, mutta ei koko ajan (tai koskaan) tarkoitus ole tehdä ”näköistä”. Onhan meillä kamerat, ja ei esim. perspektiivikään ole ihan niin autuaaksitekevä juttu kuin koulussa annettiin ymmärtää.

Kirjassa on esseitä ja harjoituksia. Osa esseistä on enemmän käytännönläheisiä, osa maalailee isolla pensselillä jossa kaukana (nämä voivat ensimmäisellä lukukerralla saada aikaan hihitystä, mutta toisella niistä voi löytyä ihan pointtikin). Osa harjoituksista on helppo toteuttaa ihan yksin, osassa tarvitaan malli tms. Mukana myös paljon kuvia, jotka tosin enimmäkseen aika pieniä (mutta niitähän on paljon). Osa kuvista on suurien starbojen teoksia, osa ilmeisesti (näin luulen) on koulun kasvattien töitä.

Tämä ei ole ihan eka piirustuskirja, koska tässä on hyvin vähän teknistä opastusta. Ja oppilas ei ole vielä kehittänyt itselleen päänsisäisiä ongelmia. Mutta jossain paikkeilla opinpolkua tämä on hyvä lukea, koska harjoituksilla voi päästä joistakin ”lukoista” irti ja esseistä voi saada ahaa-elämyksiä.

normally I hate “how to draw” books, especially since I work in a museum shop so I’ve seen a lot of (overpriced) ones. but this one actually gets to the PURPOSE behind drawing— it’s about translating your unique view of the world onto a piece of paper!! reminds me of what I love most about going to life drawing sessions every week :•)
