This edition by H&E Publishing in partnership with The Andrew Fuller Center of Baptist Studies at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary is a work with some updated language and user friendly formatting. Andrew Fuller (1754–1815) wrote this to encourage a young minister in sermon preparation and it will be of great value to any preacher today.
Andrew Fuller (6 February 1754 – 7 May 1815) was an English Particular Baptist minister and theologian. Known as a promoter of missionary work, he also took part in theological controversy. Fuller is best known in connection with the foundation of the Baptist Missionary Society, to which he for the most part devoted his energies.
Andrew Fuller is a Baptist pastor-theologian who needs to be studied and learned from. In the area of preaching, Fuller gives excellent counsel on the need for biblical exposition and doctrinal preaching. Two samples of a sermon outline are interesting and helpful. The final chapter on preaching Christ is gold and you’ll see where Spurgeon drew from in his own preaching ministry. Pick up this little volume and learn!
This is a short treatment on preaching by Andrew Fuller. This book was written at a time when exposition was the norm. He continually drives men to the text of Scripture.
I'd say the explanations on preaching are average to above average. However, his chapters on both allegory and preaching Christ are absolutely grand and should be read by every Christian minister.
Andrew Fuller’s little treatise on Preaching is a good companion to his little book on backsliding. The preacher providing the Gospel helps to prevent backsliding. Keep the Gospel central, that is his main point. And he makes it repeatedly. It also includes a sermon he did on the task on the minister. The minister is not a super Christian, but is set apart for the exhortation of the Word.
This is a short book packed with application on the act of preaching. If you are someone who wants to learn helpful ways of preaching and you only have an hour to read something, this 60 page book is the one for you. It can be dry just because of how practical it is in its delivery, but this isn’t a book to read for fun, it’s book to learn from.
