A SOUL IS A TERRIBLE THING TO WASTE!

In the second book in the Dead Jack series, the zombie detective hits rock bottom, bingeing on fairy dust and formaldehyde 24/7. Reluctantly, he sets out with a fellow zombie, the narcissistic Garry, to find his long-lost soul. But a new threat emerges: a neo-Nazi group that hunts down the depressed corpse, believing his sidekick Oswald has the power to capture all the souls in Pandemonium. Again, the wicked world needs saving, but this time can Jack also save himself?

Features two brand-new interior illustrations.

James Aquilone

James Aquilone was raised on Saturday morning cartoons, comic books, sitcoms, and Cap'n Crunch. Amid the Cold War, he dreamed of being a jet fighter pilot but decided against the military life after realizing it would require him to wake up early. He had further illusions of being a stand-up comedian, until a traumatic experience on stage forced him to seek a college education. Brief stints as an alternative rock singer/guitarist and child model also proved unsuccessful. Today he battles a severe Tetris addiction while trying to write in the speculative fiction game. Demons, robots, dragons, superheroes...that sort of thing. His short fiction has been published in such places as Nature's Futures, The Best of Galaxy’s Edge 2013-2014, Unidentified Funny Objects 4, and Weird Tales Magazine. His first novel should be out soon. Suffice it to say, things are going much better than his modeling career.

He lives in Staten Island, New York, but don't hold that against him.

Dead Jack and the Soul Catcher by James Aquilone is a NetGalley book I requested and the review is voluntary. This book is a blast. A zombie PI, a skeleton in a zoot suit, a witch, and a doll like creature that is so powerful that everyone is after him. These are the main characters and they have some interesting characters after them like Nazi zombies, demons, and more. It is clever, witty, and very humorous. I didn't read book one but I wasn't lost at all reading this. I won't miss the next one!

I don’t write reviews.

You might think I like everything since so many of the books I’ve read have been awarded four or five stars. I don’t know if that’s true. I think I’ve liked them, but they get stars because they met the goal of what they were meant to be.

This book is a good example. Don’t get me wrong I enjoyed it to pieces. I’m tired of Nazis though. The bad guys are Nazis. Don’t worry it’s no spoiler. Dead Jack is such a creative series and it is a bit sad that Aquilone had to go with Nazis. It’s alright I suppose. It’s just that these days EVERYTHING people don’t like is equated to something Third Reich. Very very tired. I mean Jack was held in Room 731! No Japanese baddies??! Oh well. It met what it could be, hence five stars.

I’m happy to see that the third in this series will be released in June this year. Regardless of the fooking Nazis I’ll read it.

The second book of Dead Jack the zombie detective. While you can read this book by itself, I would recommend reading Dead Jack and the Pandemonium Device first to get a better sense of Oswald. The writing moves right along so it is a quick read. This has less humor and more action than the first book but it still is the same Dead Jack. A delightful character and supporting characters and a wild imaginative ride.

Much like its predecessor, this one is just okay. But I would still read more adventures of Dead Jack and his changeling buddy, Oswald. The biggest hurdle for me to overcome with the Dead Jack books is the total anthropomorphization of the dead, fairies and other fantasy folk. You've got your scenes with skeleton grunts and demons who hate their day job in Hell. It's all fairly standard 90's humor, but at least the presentation works.

Need book three to see what trouble the gang let loose on the world. Dead Jack is despondent over the seemingly death of Oswald, the undead Nazi’s are coming for him but if he and zombie Skelton Gary can get their souls back, maybe they can pass over together?? At least in Gary, mind. And when is Oswald going to wake up? What’s Lucifer up to? Shadow men are attacking and Jack is still addicted to fairy dust.

Dead Jack and the Soul Catcher is a refreshingly raw and unfiltered horror comedy. James Aquilone fills this tale with gut-punch intensity and blindside plot twists, and I found myself laughing out loud many times. Readers looking for something fresh casn't go wrong with Soul Catcher. I'm definitely looking forward to the film.

Dead Jack is a fun character, and this second instalment in his madcap afterlife is a much smoother and smarter book. Plus Eric G. Dove is a great narrator!

I’ve been reading this series on audio book. It’s enjoyable and interesting enough to keep up with. I appreciate the voice actor they have as well. He does a very good job with the various voices and you almost forget that it’s him

I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley

This book continues on in much the same vein as the first, although I did overall find it a bit more enjoyable. Probably more of a 3.5 but not quite enough to bump it up to a 4, although the next book could very well get to that point because they are definitely getting better as they go.

This book sees Jack trying to fix up Oswald after the events of the previous book as well as confronting the Nazi scientists from his past. He brings some new friends along for the ride [Lucifer shows up periodically as well, although I definitely wouldn't classify him as a 'friend'] and also an old friend in the shape of my personal favorite character - Zara!

Honestly I used to think books with Nazis as the villains were so lazy and overdone because like ...of course they're evil! They're Nazis! But sadly recent real world events have caused me to rethink how obvious that is to many people, and now I'm 500% here for any book where Nazis are getting punched in the face. This one definitely applies:

Oh man, I wonder who the douchebag with the comb-over is supposed to be ;)
