Exodus: The Warrior Within

“You’re not losing your mind.”
Canadian author E.H. James is a prolific writer of short stories – stories that test the imagination and call forth ghost like thoughts of the dark world about which we know very little. James is part of that conundrum as there is no biographical information on this gifted author as though that is meant to be part of the mysteries presented. We learn that she has read and researched in the areas of parapsychology and metaphysics, for the past 40 years, and has woven the real and imaginary together into stories of the strange and bizarre. The fruits of her labor show!
This is Part II of her series THE DARKENING and James’ mastery of the short story is obvious to those readers fortunate to have been introduced to her craft. In a matter a few pages she is able to conjure an atmosphere that challenges the reader’s courage to enter past the initial page, and the manner in which she quickly sketches lifelike characters and draws us into their interactions with the challenges they encounter is masterful.
Some of the atmospheric writing is present in the first few pages – ‘Hank shot up in bed. For a moment, he sat clutching the blanket, his heart racing. He grabbed a pen and notepad from the bedside table. Holding the pen poised to write, his hand trembled. The empty white sheet glared at him. The fleeting images even now abandoning his thoughts. He sighed and tossed the pad and pen onto the table. Throwing the blankets aside, he swung his legs of the edge of the bed. Tiny clawed feet clicked on the wood flooring, as they scurried in the shadows. He turned, but there was nothing there. He half shrugged and snatched the pants and shirt form the chair by the bed. Yawning, he strolled into the washroom and relieved himself. He washed his hands and splashed cold water on this face. Pressing his palms onto the cold porcelain of the sink, he raised his head. On the window sill behind him, there was a ball of fur about the size of a kitten. Its hair was scraggly, and it had no tail. “What the …?” The creature shifted on short legs, its red eyes staring into his. Baring long needle-like teeth, it leaped from the sill straight at his face…….”That was not real. This is not happening.”

Richly painted grotesqueries flood the pages of this mesmerizing book. E. H. James must have traveled in that other world to be so concisely informed! Fine reading!

There had been some time between reading the others and this one. Nonetheless this was a fantastic read! E.H. James delivers a well written suspense story that will have you wanting more. I love how each character is totally different but they worked well together. This whole series is great and if you love suspense with a bit of horror, you need to check this out! I give this 5 stars.

I come again with a paranormal horror book. I love this author books there amazing. I read the first book while ago and loved a lot so when E.H.James asked me “hey do you wanna read the second one ?” I was like yussss!
I one fact you take under consideration I remembered the first book but not into much detail and that my fellow bookworms threw me off for the second book. Never the less the second book didn’t;t disappoint and actually did a small recap from the first book which was great.
I want to judge this book into components of the story arc
characters.
First of all the story arc was pretty good. As I said in the first book I really like the concept of time loops and relieving your worst fears for your own kind of hell. And all the realms coexisting in one “happy family” until the rebel child goes haywire and then it needs to go on detention.
The mastery of the story is brilliant but sometimes the characters can ruin the whole world building the author did.
In the second book, I had a problem with one of the characters “Henderson” what a douche/ball baster. I explain how I see him you know in tv series you have the super talented and super smart people and then you have one person that is so damn or doesn’t believe so the smart/talented people try and explain things to him/her and usually is a cop so that person was Henderson but the annoyance level 100. I am sorry I don’t what but suddenly the second book he became this guy. It sounds super mean and I feel awful for hating a character that much but it really did mess the story a little bit, because instead of going in for the action you had him doubting everything. Of course, you need that kind of character in a story because it’s a good way to progress a story and a lot of spins but in this one didn’t cut it.
Anyway, I actually thought the actual story was very compelling and it would do an awesome movie.
SO yeah, I would recommend this book especially if you read the first one. In overall the story wins over character on this occasion.
