Book Reviewed on www.whisperingstories.com

Rufus had come to stay at his cousin Lara’s house for the summer whilst his Grandparents (who he lived with) went on a cruise. However, Lara’s mum gets an important phone call and needs to travel to Egypt right away so she has to find someone to look after the children at short notice.

The kids are packed off to stay with their Uncle Herb (their Grandad’s brother) who lives in a castle. They have never met, nor heard of Herb before. The children soon learn about their Uncle’s eccentric ways, hidden treasure, and a curse that is said to have haunted the family for generations after the owner of the castle, explorer Captain Jack Kexley brought Egyptian artefacts home with him that he shouldn’t have taken.

The children meet up with local boy Tom whose parents work for their Uncle. Between the three of them, and Barney the dog, the kids decide to go in hunt of the treasure but they are not alone. Others want it too, supposedly historians from the British Museum who are ruthless and will stop at nothing to get their hands on it.

The Adventurers and the Cursed Castle is an action-packed, fun adventure featuring three children who want to help Uncle Herb find the treasure he has been looking for, for decades.

The story reminded me of a modern-day The Famous Five by Enid Blyton books, in that children and a dog take it upon themselves to solve a puzzle and have an adventure along the way. However, I don’t believe this is a copy of her work.

The three characters all had their own personalities which bounced off one another and worked well together making the three of them very likeable. The setting was intriguing and the plot fascinating. The secondary characters played their parts well, including Uncle Herb who wasn’t as daft as he first came across.

Overall, it is a great adventure story which was exciting as I waited for the mystery to be solved and kept me turning the pages. This is the first in a series with two more books already released.

Lara ja Rufus peavad minema suveks vanaonu juurde, kes elab hiiglaslikus lossis, mille kohta enamik inimesi vihjab, et see on neetud. Koos majapidaja poja Tomiga hakkavad lapsed lossi saladusi uurima.

The Adventurers and The Cursed Castle is billed as an "exciting adventure story for children aged 8-12." So is it bad that I (who is definitely NOT a child aged 8-12) loved it so much? I hope not because as long as Jemma Hatt keeps writing this series, I will be reading it!

When Lara Jacobs is shipped off for the summer with her dog Barney and her cousin Rufus to their mysterious Great-Uncle Herb's castle in Cornwall, they both expect to be bored out of their minds. Not only are they stuck with a weird old relative they've never met before, but the "castle" is falling apart and Great-Uncle Herb (I really want to call him Gruncle Herb - if you're a fan of the TV show Gravity Falls like I am, you'll totally get it) doesn't have the money to make the necessary repairs.

However, along with their new friend Tom (the son of the castle's caretaker and housekeeper), the trio (sorry, Barney! quartet) soon discover that there are spooky rumours attached to old Kexley Castle. According to legend, a  mysterious curse was placed on the castle ever since an Egyptian treasure was hidden in the castle by a 19th Century explorer, Captain Jack Kexley.

At first, the kids don't believe the story, but when two unwelcome "historians" arrive from the British Museum asking about the treasure, they start thinking that there might be more to the legend than meets the eye. And The Adventurers are off on their first adventure!

This book was a lot of fun! I loved the characters - Lara, Rufus and Tom are close enough in age to share interests and have fun together, but each have very distinct personalities. This is the type of book I would have devoured as a child - characters that I would want to be friends with, a cool setting, a mystery, adventure and lots fun. Even though it was a story for children, adults reading along with their little ones will not be bored. I never felt like I was reading a children's book, I just felt that I was reading a mystery book where the main characters just happened to be kids.

If you like Enid Blyton’s Famous Five, then you should love this book.

Finding inspiration in an admired children’s author is not the same as copying. In spite of utilising the familiar Cornwall scenario, Jemma Hatt creates her own unique castle setting and character voices. For those who previously read Blyton as a child, it feels like returning to a favourite place on summer holiday to make new friends and pursue unknown adventures, serving as a perfect summer read for families.

The trio of Lara, Rufus, and Tom, attended to by insightful housekeeper Mrs. Burt and the mysterious Uncle Herb, display abundant strengths and a few weaknesses without sacrificing a sense of humor to amuse the reader. And loyal collie dog companion Barney is essential to the story.

Clues to uncovering the castle’s curse reveal themselves in a well-paced plot, replete with action and a bit of helpful reflection. The author effectively weaves in backstory to deepen understanding of the characters, promising future development.

This review may be late, but if it causes one more reader to start this series, it has served its purpose. I am grateful to have discovered the Adventurers now as a teacher, yet it would have been even more joyful to discover them at age eight or nine.

Tegelikult paneksin hinnanguks isegi 3,5. See kuidagi jäi kohe silma. Muidu lugu ise täitsa põnev ja tore, kohati võibolla veidi liiga pinna pealne. Aga tegemist siiski lastekirjandusega, seega täiesti arusaadav.

The target audience for this book is a bit younger than other similar books I've read, it seems. As such, I found it too simple, with clues revealed and solved too quickly and too conveniently, and several moments that required a larger dose of suspension of disbelief than what I'm used to. My low score should thus be taken as an indication of my own misjudgement than anything else, I'm sure some kids will love it.

A mysterious castle, a curious curse and a treasure waiting to be found - what more could you want? I loved following these fabulous characters as they solved clues using teamwork and ingenuity. Lots of snappy dialogue and intrigue kept me turning the pages as the mystery unfolded.
Great fun ... and more adventures await!

Dołączycie do naszej szalonej czwórki żądnych przygód dzieciaków?

Aardejaht on igal juhul üks suur seiklus. Räägib keegi, kes enne raamatu lugemist vaatas filme "National Treasure" ja pärast raamatut peaaegu ühe soojaga ära Dan Browni raamatute põhjal tehtud filmid ja peas käärib mõte, et vahepeal unarusse jäänud geopeituse hobi tuleks üles soojendada... Sellegipoolest kujutan ette, et ka täitsa tavalisele täiskasvanule, kelle hinges vähegi seikluslikkust on, sobib see raamat mõnusaks lugemiseks.

Süžee on tegelikult üsna klassikaline.

Z chęcią sięgnę po kolejne tomy, by poznać dalsze losy Przygodowców 🗺️

Tegevus toimub Inglismaal Cornwallis, kus kolm last veedavad suve vanas pool-lagunevas lossis.

A thriller mystery for kids! (And adults . . .)

The first book in what has shaped up to be an epic series of Enid Blyton proportions. And it’s a whole lot of fun. What is shaping up to be a normal, run-of-the-mill summer holiday in Cornwall shapes up to be a whole lot more for the gang. From the dastardly villains on their tale to the perilous situations the children find themselves in (a CURSED CASTLE, for example) this book defines the word unputdownable. The relationships and wordplay between the kids is incredibly entertaining, and the vocabulary that the author uses plays up to kids’ curiosities, in the way that the best children’s books should. A highly recommended first book in a series that you must try, particularly if you love ADVENTURES.

The description says it's written for 8 to 12 year olds but I think it skews more towards the younger end of that. I didn't particularly like this one as an adult reader. The plot was convoluted and simplistic at the same time. I didn't find it very exciting, but maybe because it's geared towards 8/9 year olds and I prefer juvenile fiction aimed at a slightly older audience.

On the plus side its relatively short and has some positive messages about friendship and judging people without knowing their story.

The book is predictable, full of cliches, and the writing could have used a little more brushing up. As a book intended for elementary children it works as an adventure. Still, my children's attention was not riveted. Lara and Rufus are sent for a few weeks to live with their Great-Uncle at his castle. Enlisting the help of their new friend Tom, the three try to unravel the clues their ancestor left about a treasure he buried which brought about a family curse. Hot on the children's tail are two men who want the treasure too. Rated 2.25/5.

At first I didn’t really like it and I thought it was bad writing, but after they found that first clue. The book got spicy. I really like watching Rufus and Lara’s relationship strength and especially in the end when Rufus refuses to become a movie star so he can be with Lara.🥹 Mr Bunce is such a jerk. Drowned children.😟 glad I read it even though I thought I wouldn’t like it. You really can’t judge a book off its cover. 😊

I liked the concept of the novel. The rest however... The characters lacked dept, the plot was predictable. There was more telling than showing. I don't think this book is great for younger readers either, because it is too simple and not exciting enough to continue reading. I'm giving it two stars for the concept and the work that was put into it.
