After leaving Jackson, Texas, Jess and Bodine head to Stratton, Texas, where Jess has agreed to take some time off and fish in the lake he and Henry Stratton built. Along the way, they stop off at the town of Berkshire.
They quickly learn that the town’s officials, including the marshal, have turned the town into a haven for outlaws, charging them a daily fee to stay there without being bothered. At first, it seems to be harmless, as none of the outlaws bothers or harms the local townsfolk and the businesses in town charges the outlaws double for whatever they buy or consume.
That quickly changes when a cold-blooded killer by the name of Jake Rickman rides into town and stays at the hotel. Bodine is awaiting a wire back from United States Marshal Frank Reedy, asking if they should interfere with the town’s operation. The answer from Frank Reedy is what Bodine expected: Pin their federal badges on and clean up the town.
Jess kills a hired gun working for a cattle baron who has a huge ranch outside of Berkshire. The rancher tries to bribe Jess and Bodine with money, but when that doesn’t work, he tries to run them off with hired killers. Jess finds himself ducking bullets and facing the best gunslingers the cattle baron can buy…and he has no shortage of money.
Just when they think things can’t get any worse, Frank Reedy is wounded by two outlaws passing through Stratton, Texas. Jess and Bodine want to leave Berkshire and hunt down the two attackers, but they still have to deal with the cattle baron until their replacements arrive.

Jess Williams and John Bodine are on their way home to Stratton, Texas after taking care of situations in Jackson, Texas..They will pass through a town named Berkshire, which unknown to Jess and John is a sanctuary for owlhoots of all levels of depravity inflicted on anybody who happens to get in their way. The marshal, mayor and town council were all involved in bribery..oh, so we're a few of the businesses on Main Street. So when Jess and John made their debut, they were asked by Lobo, the hairy, did they speak with the Sheriff? If not, they would be served anywhere in town...strange, strange and what's going on here? Dang, have John and Jess walked into another quagmire? They contact Frank Reedy U. S. Marshal located in Stratton, who tells them to put on their badges and clean up the town. Well we all know that nothing goes quickly or easy. One situation leads into another situation and everything for those going against the law just goes down the deepest rabbit hole...not good for those engaged in bribery or other unlawful incidents. As all Jess assignments and man hunts goes..look out he's onto their games and no holes barred, especially those who challenged Jess Williams...
Jess continues to hunt killers but gets a surprise when he meets the dishonest Sheriff of Berkshire and finds out that any criminal can pay a daily fee to stay in the town without being arrested. Another fast moving, suspense filled Western from Thomas. I have never been disappointed with when reading novels 1 through 79. Looking forward to reading number 80. I highly recommend this author.
RJT. has. penned the 79th western novel about Jess Williams. JW. and Robert Bodine are working together as marshals again. After they finish their assignment they head back to Stratton only to stop at a small town being run by a crooked marshal and rancher. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
As always a great read. I really look forward to the new books on Jess. I don’t think the devil sent him I believe it was God who sent him to protect the innocent. I think we may see more of Martha Heller in future readings. Finally Jess Williams gets a chance for the first time to see his house in Statton Texas. Love found it's way in Berkshire Texas.
Great Robert J Thomas western story about Jess Williams.
I have read all seventy nine of the series of Jess Williams and his adventures. If you like bounty hunters stories you will love the series. Jess hunts and eliminates the worst wanted bandits in the west.
Keeping with some of the same characters is great. Jess keeps up his intensity. Don't mess with jess. I've read them all and then wait patiently for the next Jess Williams fix.
Another rich man gets to buy a town with money and then with hired guns. Jess and Bovine comes to rescue a town. They then go back to Statton to revenge Frank for getting shot. Then Jess takes a well deserved vacation.
