A near-death rescue launches Mack into the arms of Zara Weston; a grumpy, reclusive police officer who impedes Mack's investigation at the brink of every discovery. Her officious, vigilant demeanor forces Mack to take matters into her own hands. Can the reporter slip under the radar of the meddlesome cop to uncover the truth? Or will their crossed paths bring them closer to each other and to the dangerous world of werecreatures and vampires that haunts the fringes of society?
**The Wolf's Consort is a Legacy Series tie-in novel that can be read as a stand-alone.**
Max grew up just outside of New York City, spending most of her formative years outdoors creating wild ghost hunts with neighborhood kids, setting booby-traps to capture unwitting family members, and building clubhouses on top of ten-foot walls. Max wrote her first story at the age of twelve and titled it Circles of Friendship. Through the years, Max has written several short-stories and poems, all of which met the wrath of the “Not Good Enough” monster and ended in fiery demise.
Max regained her confidence when she began writing scholarly articles and research theses on her first trip through graduate school. It took several years for her to break the habit of the formal writing that marred her creativity. An additional Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing was Max’s biggest support in this. Max writes primarily sci-fi/fantasy, paranormal romance, and Young Adult stories.
Ok. Where to start. When you lose hours because you're so engrossed in a book? Forget to go to the bathroom or eat? Cringe when you look at the % at the bottom of the page and think, noooooo slow down I don't want it to end.
That sums it up pretty much.
This is my 10th Ellendale book and IMO my all time favorite. There is just something about her writing that pulls me in so completely the entire world shuts itself out. And *that* is no small feat. I absolutely, unequivocally, loved this.
The scene pacing, character development, relationship development, et. all. There's not a single negative thing that comes to mind on this latest book. I sincerely hope to see more in this universe she's created. Caveat here that there are folks from her Glyph Legacy series. I only read the first one in that series but I definitely recognized Shawnee and Vanessa.
This read was somewhere in the range of 2 to 3 stars for me so I leave it with 2.5 stars.
The Wolf's Consort was a mildly entertaining book that ultimately didn't deliver on its premise.
I read this book right after the absolutely amazing Eastside / Westside / Love which has well developed and complex characters. So when I picked up Wolf's Consort and didn't see nearly the same character depth, my enjoyment of it was significantly lowered. Both Mack and Zara are nice enough but also quite one dimensional.
Then there's the extremely thin plot - basically, this is a fluff read where both ladies spend most of the book hanging around Zara's cabin (where they have a lot of sex). Or they interact with Zara's pack mates which I didn't enjoy much. Many characters are introduced but they are inconsequential to the plot. I have not read any other books in the series so that might be the source of the problem. Either way, the story basically goes nowhere and the main conflict features a generic baddy vamp which appears two or three times for a couple of paragraphs to add some tension. And the conflict itself never really gets screen time, it's briefly wrapped up in the epilogue via retelling of what happened.
The book also tends to info dump a lot about the supernaturals of the world which was a necessity for making this a standalone, but it would have worked better with fewer info dumps and more plot as part of the original series. I was also confused about some supernatural power decisions like the ability to teleport almost instantly anywhere, anytime without limits, even if it's on the other side of the globe. I mean by that point everyone who can't do that might as well surrender. And then they pull out high tech anti-vamp gear that probably costs hundreds of thousands if not millions to develop while living in the middle of a forest of a tiny town. I just tapped out completely at that moment.
I'm also not a fan of instant supernatural soul mates themes in my reading which usually go something like this - "We just met and you're my soul mate? YAY! I LOVE YOUUUUUUU!!!!" Nope, doesn't work for me.
The book does have decent chemistry between the characters and some good sex scenes as well as a lot of sugary, diabetes-inducing fluff. So if you're up for some light paranormal flavored popcorn read, this might be a good fit.
When I started reading the first half of The Wolf's Consort, I said to myself "wow this book is surely going to be a 5 stars one" but then it started to drag on and there wasn't much happening except some little scenes with vampires. I mean there are werewolves and werecreatures in general, so in my opinion, the book could've used some action to be balanced not only romance. However, It was an enjoyable read, and I liked the chemistry between the two MC and the characters development was well written. If you're looking for a romance with light paranormal read, then you definitely need to give this one a read.
The Beast and Her Beloved Mack is a reporter and while investigating a story about the kidnapping of a Dr., she finds herself in a world of trouble. Luckily for her the sexy police officer Zara has her back, even if she does frustrate the officer to no end. Mack is drawn to the alluring woman and can’t get her out of her thoughts. Zara is a special sort of woman, she is part wolf too, and hopelessly attracted to the nosy reporter that she keeps getting out of trouble. When Mack’s life is in danger, the two have to hide out together and soon all secrets will be revealed. Being a werewolf is only a part of the incredible things Mack needs to learn!
I thought this story was so wonderful! It’s exciting, engaging, intriguing, romantic and sexy and full of adventure. I adored the plot and thought it was so well thought out and executed. The characters are fantastic, the writing perfect, the love and sexy bits steamy and sensual and the danger factor just enough to keep me on the edge of my seat without causing too many scared butterflies to roam free. I was charmed by Zara and loved watching her grow into the wolf she was always meant to be. Oh and I TOTALLY want to live in her house, its amazing! Thanks so much for the fantastic fantasy Ms Ellendale, I really treasured it!
A lovely exciting romantic read about a werewolf and a human. This is a lovely world building and romance and a great read.just what you need to make you forget about the world around you in a pandemic. I want this book to become a series not a one off to see more of the other characters,
I've been an Ellendale fan since the Four Point Trilogy. I've read all of her crime/thriller and lesbian romances and have come to expect quality writing, lovely and complex characters, and a good story. I was surprised to see Ellendale writing paranormal until I realized that genre is her roots. Before I read Consort, I picked up the Legacy Series and enjoyed it. Consort is a lovely tie in with a well deserved HEA. It has everything I like in paranormal; wolves, vampires, and good world building. Mack is fun and bold, Zara is strong and passionate. A great match up. I could see Ellendale writing much more in this world. Kudos. I enjoyed it.
Everything in this book was handled well. The characters, their interactions, their fears and connections felt real and deep. It was a pleasure to read and I'll get back to this story in a while, after I read the rest of this awesome author's other books.
I am in love with this book! It kept me captivated from start to finish! I couldn't put it down! The story is amazing!! It was action packed .. you'll turn the pages faster and faster!, It's Entertaining... it had me laughing while also showing it's most passionate and vulnerable sides and it made me cry!!!! The characters oh my gosh! I was so happy to see the previous characters return.. they are so much fun together!!! while introducing two new characters that show their strength and their weaknesses! and it was truly beautiful watching them coming together and growing! the sense of family and acceptance is such a beautiful thing in this book! I definitely recommend this book for everyone to read! the author poured her heart into this book and it truly showed through the story!
This is a good read. A reporter for a small Northern Utah newspaper, Makayla Parker, Mack to her colleagues, is sent to get the story about an explosion at the local hospital. Blocking Makayla’s progress at every turn is one “flawless, bronze and lithe” Officer Zara Weston. These two are thrown together at the crime scene and keep running into each other. While looking for the home of a victim of the blast, Makayla is jumped by a young wolf. At that moment Weston walks out of the woods, yells commands at the cub and the cub runs away. Weston takes a confused and suspicious Makayla to her cabin and the story unfolds from there.
The story is full of paranormal beings, humor, and a great love story. Enjoy!
Ugh. DNF. This appears to be part of a larger series which may be why I just couldn't get into the plot or characters. I made it past the 50% point but couldn't muster the enthusiasm to finish. The book and the author seems to get high ratings, so I'll put it down to personal preference and move along.
I like these stories with Were people, I like all sorts of sci fi and super natural elements in stories as well. I enjoy them and I seek them out sometimes, but there is a flaw I’m coming across in a lot of the books about Werewolves. They can be so different and creative and that’s what I like about this book, there were things that I felt I’d never have imagined myself, and yet so many of these books feel like the same characters are always in use just with some differences.
If you’ve not read a million other werewolf lesbian fiction books, then you’ll like this a lot, but if you have, it may not have as much pizazz.
**spoilers?**
Take the two lead characters for example. They start off as their own people, then when they get together, I recognize the exact same two lead characters from every other werewolf based lesbian fiction. It works and I get it, but I reeeeeeally want something different. I love the world of this book, but I want the two leads to stand out more. I don’t know how to do that obviously, I’m not a writer or creative in any way, I guess I’m just hoping an author can deliver that sometime soon or else these stories will slowly start to bore me more and more.
I LOVED THIS BOOK! I read it in one sitting! Truthfully, I hesitated when reading at first because I wondered if this was gonna be a book where the cop was a complete a** and somehow the other love interest still fell in love with her. That was not the case though. Even when Zara was obviously very frustrated, she was very kind and VERY calm with Mack. Which we later find out why. The dynamics of the relationship will surprise you and like many other shifter books, this differs. There is also a little extra magic that one would next expect. The development of the characters is just beautiful and the romance is a connection most would dream of. Both women have tragic pasts, but together they open up and become one. I highly recommend reading this if you are into F/F romance!
I thought the story was refreshing at first, but I’m not sure from when; it just gets boring, and the “big fighting” with the vampires at the end is really a mess, I can’t help myself skipping a few pages, and I hate doing that. I feel like some of the dialogue between Zara and Mack is the same thing kept repeating over and over again; it bothers me at some point. And one thing that annoys me is that some of the characters in one moment are acting really mature, but then suddenly they all start speaking like a teenager, ugh
I wish I could say I like this book, even though the submassive werewolves sound delicious
This was a relatively fast paced read that was well written. The chemistry between the two main characters was clear from the star even if it was somewhat standoffish, you could tell they were still drawn to each other despite any negativity. I liked the concept of the beast, so this wasn't just a normal shifter story, it mixed in were as well. The vampires were somewhat different too. If you like shifter stories with a bit of a hard edge and romance, you will like this.
It is written by the point of view of Mack, the reporter, and we follow her adventure in finding out, what happens in the 3000 people town, where she lives a few years. Reading it, without much breaks, I would like to read more, about the figures around them and how everything works.
If you love Weres, vampires and funny banter between a couple, it is a book I can recommend.
Good story line. Interesting charters. Over all a very good book. Not five stars for me because to I wanted to fight it wasn't a page turner to me. That is not taking away from the story tho, it was a good read.
3.5 I liked the chemistry and Mac is very funny but I started losing interest around halfway through and the ending was kinda rushed and felt kinda meh. But enjoyable overall.
I love the four point trilogy and the other books in the universe. I wasn't sure I'd like this but as usual this author didn't disappoint. I very much enjoyed it, I may check out the legacy series but not sure bc of the two bond thing for Shawnee. Anyways. Enjoyed this book a lot.
