A bio is a weird thing to write.

Just trying to imagine presenting the highlights of ME sets off alarm bells in my head. Why would anybody want to know anything about me? What about me is remarkable enough to tell?

When I think about these questions, I recall lying on my bed back in high school, headphones muffed over my ears, heavy metal blasting through my head. As with most teens, music’s power seduced me, and as I listened, I found myself admiring the albums' cover art (yeah, I’m old enough that I used to by LP’s) and I found myself reading about the singers and guitar players and drummers in the liner notes. Why? Because those musicians had created something that was deeply personal, passionate, and wonderfully emotional, and they’d shared it with the world. They’d shared it with me.

It made me want to know them through more than just their music. So, I read.

Through the years, I found myself reading about writers I’d enjoyed, historical figures I’d admired, politicians who weren’t dipshits, and business leaders who’d built great companies. Again, why? Who the hell knows? We’re all just people. I think we find each other interesting. We like to feel connected.

And that was my answer, at least as to the WHY.

On the WHAT I can say about me, for those who feel moved by my work: I’ll give it a quick go.

I was born an Air Force brat and lived in a dozen states before I graduated high school. I’ve worked my way through a wide variety of jobs, left most on a whim, owned businesses, lived through times when I had more money than I knew what to do with, and worried my way through times when I wondered how I’d pay the rent.

Life has been boring at times, and it’s been plenty exciting, too. So far.

I’ve traveled to India, stood atop the tallest mountains around, swam with sharks, smarted-off to cops, and been arrested. I’ve tried beer and weed, but never made a thing of either one. I’ve been brushed too close by death a few times. Thankfully, doctors, EMT’s, and nurses were kind enough to put all the pieces together again. I've ridden my bike so deep into the mountains it felt like I was alone on the edge of heaven, and I've watched the red sun sinking on an evening so clear it looked like it was falling off the edge of the world.

I’ve always had a hard time being where I am, wherever that is. My daydreams forever call from just over the horizon.

I’ve been asked by a dozen bosses where I see myself in five years, and I've lied every time, always telling them what they wanted to hear. Because the only thing I knew for sure, was that I wanted to be anywhere but there.

Just about worth sticking with

So.... Let's start with what's positive.
Good price
Interesting world building
After the 3rd book it does get better

And the not so good:
Pretty much every character in the first 2.5 books is extremely unlikable
The main character is a detestable narcissist playing out a hero fantasy
The main character is the best in the universe at everything he does despite having a career spanning days for most of the first books
The dialog is awful most of the time, very little believable human interaction
Character motivations are unbelievable, most characters are presented as idiots
Deus ex machina resolves most of the plotlines

Conclusion:
I really struggled with this, the first two books were very bad. I'm glad I stayed with it, the last few books do show some good ideas and world building, backstory on the aliens, etc.
I'm very concerned that so many people rated this so highly and it does make me suspicious.

So I picked this title up at Amazon for only 99 cents, which is a great value for a six volume space opera coming in at 1423 pages. The story is set in the near future when a small group of telepathic aliens, the Grays, visit and conquer Earth, enslaving the human race. With anti-gravity technology and portable fusion reactors, the Grays have a decisive technological advantage that the Earthlings can't overcome with present-day technology. However, the Grays lack the basic creativity and ingenuity that is emblematic of the human race.

The protagonist is Dylan Kane, a slave who joins a secret army whose goal is to free mankind from the Gray's domination. There are many ups and downs as Kane fights his way through the books. The story is entertaining enough, and the writing is good. If you like space opera and protagonists who battle against long odds, this book will keep you engaged. Some of the characters are rich and interesting, like Kane's telepathic friend Phil and the irreverent Sergeant Brice. Many characters, however, are flat and stay undeveloped, like Colonel Blair, Kane's superior officer and constant antagonist. Despite these flaws, it is an entertaining read, and if you can pick it up for 99 cents it's well worth a look.

Unappealing main character. Weird romance plot (borderline grooming at best). A very cool premise and honestly the only reason I stuck on was to gather information for a D&D campaign idea.

No superlatives in existence will correctly do justice

In terms of space opera, after 3 to 400 space opera books these past 24 to 30 months, give or take a couple, I'm FINALLY able to say I'm struggling to find the right superlatives to describe the experience of reading through the 6 (waaayyy too short) books of this series. If you like space opera and a non-stop ever escalating series of fast-paced twists and turns in this rather nasty war between human and alien, go for it, you'll be turning pages before you know it, unable to stop reading until your eyes start striking, imposing their limits. In short, supremely enjoyable.

Great story

One of the best sci-fi series I have read and ranks as nearly as good as one of Clarke's .
A truly magnetic story line that kept me riveted from start to finish .

Not stellar writing and gets a little repetitive by the end like most of these military space operas. But it was an interesting mix up to my usual reading and filled the mood I was looking for.

First Rate

This is a first rate SciFi space opera. The premise is interesting and engaging. The series starts off with an almost comic book feel, but quickly solidifies into a well thought out universe with a variety of characters.

I really enjoyed this series, despite its flaws. While there were issues, they didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment. One recurring problem was that Adair occasionally mixed up which character was speaking. This happened more often toward the final two books, but it was usually easy to spot and didn’t disrupt the flow of reading too much.

The world-building was strong, but it left many threads hanging and unexplored. Whether intentional or not this creates plenty of potential for Adair to write follow-up series set in the same universe, and I really hope he decides to do so.

The characters were interesting and the premise of the story was plausible. The technologies crucial to the plot development, while not based on current science, were explained in layman's terms sufficient to the needs of the story ... after all, we've all been exposed to FTL travel and telepathy in SF for a long time. The military action sequences and the political themes present had an authentic feel, as well. Although the ending was rather abrupt, for the most part I enjoyed reading this series.

I will explain my reservation in that last statement by analogy. Imagine you've just found the work of an instrumental musician whose work you've not encountered before. You listen and find yourself liking what you hear until you hear a discordant sound in the midst of the music. You think that it's just an unfortunate mistake. But then you find the same sour note being played whenever the artist attempts to play a particular chord almost every time it occurs in the piece. The sound increasingly detracts from your enjoyment of the artist's work which you are otherwise enjoying very much. Eventually, you conclude that the artist isn't using an instrument that is out of tune, because the same note is played correctly when not part of that particular chord. Instead, you begin to wonder if the artist simply doesn't know he's playing it incorrectly and nobody has bothered to tell him so. Surely, if he had had any professional training, his teacher would have pointed out the error and he would have learned to recognize and correct it.

Like the wrongly played note in a particular chord, throughout this series this author consistently misused objective case pronouns as part of the compound subject of a sentence (e.g. Tom, Harry and me went to town), interrupting my enjoyment of the story. This is a common error in English usage that is usually taught to be avoided in middle school, or junior high, as it was called in my day. Unfortunately, this author apparently did not learn that lesson, and, if he employed any proofreaders and/or editors in the production of this work, all of them suffered the same educational deficiency. This is sad, since the author is evidently a gifted storyteller. Because this is the only work by this author I've read to date, I do not know if he has improved since this series was created, but I truly hope so.

One final note reflecting on the quality of proofreading ... the speed of propagation of electromagnetic radiation in space is approximately 186,000 miles per second, not miles per hour.

It was tolerable and distracted me at the dentist's office

There were things I didn't like that prevented me from giving this book five stars. I also didn't feel like giving four stars (that's a category that nobody pays attention to). So, Bobby, I'm giving you a high pass. I purchased the full set of books, so I'm not completely tied to the various books in the series as one would be who had to wait for each sequel. I'm glad I didn't read this series that way as I think the complete story is definitely better than any of its component parts. The first book that stopped at about 28% was a stinker. I like understanding each minutiae contributing to the grand scheme of the story, but in this, I don't understand Dylan's relationship to his wife and her sister. When I combine this relationship with the colonel Blair stuff, I started wondering whether you were misogynistic, in a dead end marriage, or you were trying to excuse your personal life. Book two was shor. I was left with the feeling that we were marking time to get some length to the book. It was kind of ho-hum. You seemed to come out of it with book the where we are winning, and good things are happening. You didn't let up at the end, but it did look as if you were having a difficult time with the last book. in this last book only, there were numerous words that just weren't supposed to have been left in the manuscript. These were where you decided to add emphasis or change the structure of the sentence, but you left both versions there. At the end I decided I actually liked the story, but I can't forgive you for the stinkers you left in the first two books. I understand your basic theme that human nature is such that we'll ignore the bad outer space aliens when they come standing at our door until it is too late. You have a point there. I can understand why you put the prequel last as no one would understand it if they read it first. You forgot, however, to explain how colonel Bird knew Billy Kane was a hero. No radio, no survivors.

Overall - 4/5
dark, humorous and non-stop

Asks - What are the defining differences between humans and an alien race that can communicate telepathically and that has only a few technological advances? They could catch us by surprise but how long can their reign last?

Editing Quality - 4/5
needs improvement but didn’t detract from story too badly

Storyline - 4/5
solid beginning, middle and end to each book that connected to the overall story arc. There were some unanswered questions remaining and possible future arcs to explore

Characters - 4/5
-favorite character, Brice - he’s been through some shit and he kicks azz in a dark, humorous way
-main character Dylan was well developed and he knew when to lead and when to follow which is always a refreshing characteristic.
-there were some characters that could have been explored in more depth, my overall impression of most was that they were created to be cannon fodder

Unputdownable - 5/5
unpredictability of the human characters made me want to know what was going to happen to them next which makes having the complete box set worthwhile - I didn’t have to wait for the next in the series

Cover Art - 4.5/5
the box set art and the individual book art are good and make sense, the only addition I’d like to see is the series number on the cover and not just the spine art

The good

- This book series knows what it's about—space military battles—and doesn't try to do much more than that. If you're into spaceships, rail guns, shields, tactics, and so on, you'll enjoy this series. If not, you won't. It's more or less non stop battles from start to finish, and the few moments between battles are mostly spent planning and preparing for battles.

- An interesting sci fi universe where, right out of the gate, humans have been conquered by aliens.

- The alien species are reasonably interesting and at least a little different than humans.

- Some cool tech, mostly focused around manipulation of gravity.

- A few well-developed and fun characters.

- A reasonably satisfying plot arc and conclusion to the series.

The not so good

- Other than space battles, there's not much here. Yes, there are a few speeches about freedom, and a sprinkling of romance, but this book series could essentially be an action-packed video game. Entertaining, but without much of a deeper message or new ideas, it's not as sticky it could be. That's OK, as long as you know what you're getting into.

- The degree of competence of the crew in their very first battles is a bit absurd. Would've been nice to see them fail a bit more before succeeding wildly.

- The alien enemies seem a bit too smart at times, and a bit too dumb at other times, fluctuating wildly in intelligence as best suits the plot.

Fantastic series!!

I absolutely loved this series!!
I feel like it was well written and authentic, you know if we were ever invaded by aliens lol. The emotions were high and there was a lot of disagreements and arguing between the characters but given the circumstances I felt like their feelings seemed very genuine. Some stories have the leader who everyone follows without little to no question. The only defiance or issues coming from either the enemy or one or two angry comrades.
They way this book was written as a military with little military structure really worked and therefore held my attention.
Action packed but also great personal stories within. I even cried a couple of times. The only thing missing for me, was an epilogue. It could have been 3 months or 3 years later either way there were a couple things I wanted know but I guess I’ll just imagine my own epilogue lol.
The narration was absolutely brilliant. The performance level on these characters was amazing. Looking forward to hearing more from Greg Tremblay.
This is the complete box set series.
I highly recommend this series!

Really Fun Read

A lot of pulp mil-sci fi can be bland, uninteresting, and feature a world tailor-made for the author to play out whatever military strategy they fantasize about. Freedom’s Fire isn’t that. There’s actually decent world building (which, on a few occasions can be contradictory, or feel like there’s a big chunk just out of the reader’s reach), and I constantly found myself wondering what would happen next, or why things in the books work the way they do, only to be surprised; sometimes pleasantly, other times in that stunned “I’m going to need a minute to process this” way. I feel like no character had all the answers, and they were all fleshed out enough to logically have internal strife in their groups. And the military portions are really good too: they track well, despite an anti-officer tone, and don’t always pan out perfectly.

On the whole, I would love to see more books in the series. This author did a great job and if he writes anything else in the sci-fi realm, I would buy it for sure.

Yet another mil-sci-fi where incompetent aliens somehow fall to human supremacy. They're especially susceptible the supremacy of one rouge free-thinker who seems to have all the right answers even when told he doesn't by those with way more authority, experience, and education. Through sheer grit, determination, and trusting his gut Capt Dashing B. Handsome American Soldier Hero for the future out wits them all and saves the entire human race.

Do not read this if you have any idea of how space battles actually work or even a cursory understanding of astrophysics. The "grav-plate" tech invented for the book is so cool but extremely under utilized, and used in very primitive ways.

I was floored at the needless side story of a 17 year old in-love with the main character 🤢 Just the icing on the cake of this authoritarian power fantasy. Oh! And the casual insane personal invasion that is mind-rape (but it's OK because it's used "for good"!)

Cover your drink around anyone who says they really like this book or series.

This series is awesome. I really enjoyed it. The third series by Bobby that I’ve listened to (audiobook on audible, series is available for one coin, same for his other series.”

The book goes in depth while building the universe, the concepts and the theories. I enjoyed how vast this universe is and the brilliant battle scenes Bobby created using a bunch of concepts.

The relationship with Silva was a little…weird. Felt maybe a little unnecessary and may turn some people off. I don’t feel comfortable defending the main character or the decision to create this relationship, but after getting a little further into the series, it becomes less of an issue.

I’d certainly recommend the series. I loved the voice actor and the twists and turns. I love that Bobby spares no one in his books. He is willing to make his characters suffer in a non-traditional heroes arch. I can’t wait to listen to the next series.

Epic is one word for it

To be honest, the closest I’ve come to reading sci-fi operas is The Ship Who Sang and Acorna...this is the first military-themed series I’ve ever read (and that’s saying a lot for an Army brat). I LOVED this series. I’m thankful I got it on the special pricing...because I would have bought all 6 after reading the first one. I read Mr Blair’s series Slow Burn, and figured I’d give it a try because I enjoy his style of writing. From the first time encountering the Grays (even though Kane grew up with them), to reading how his father REALLY died in the prequel, I have been transported to travel the stars on the Rusty Turds I & II..cheered when the ship survived, held my breath during gunfire, bubble travel and exploring the bases. Thank you for an amazing story, and a glimpse into who we truly are as humans on this little orb we call home.

Well written and enjoyable book series.

This anthology contains 7 books, all 6 of the core series plus the prequel back story on Dylan's dad. Nice character driven space opera on the broad formula of humans versus aliens. The question is which aliens are we actually fighting and why. Having finished all the books, I'm still wondering if humanity actually makes peace and where our main characters go from here. It feels like there should be another book to wrap this series up in a bow. Good read. Highly recommend.

Weird start. Weird end. But i enjoyed the ride.

I very much enjoyed this method of storytelling. Being inside the main characters head has advantages and disadvantages but I think Adair capitalized on the advantages very well. I did think the beginning was a bit rushed but I got over it quickly. After all, I'm here to read about spaceships and pew pew. Maybe I missed something at the end but I didn't feel a whole lot of closure. But I'm also a sap for "how did it all work out" endings. Overall worth the read.

Bought the entire series for a song

And what an incredible purchase it was. Thank you for not only the great ride, but also for the short story at the end that was good for the heart in a way. I would have liked to know exactly what Phil’s capabilities were more extensively and also some closure on one of the ships that lost contact with Kane and the Turd. But i guess that’s how the void works, right? It’s too vast sometimes for closure. And that’s totally ok. What a great series.

Tedious at best

There is little I can say. I enjoyed book one if even there suffered though much senseless writing. I even semi enjoyed book 2. If here I began to skim read. Battles against impossible odds and numbers yet they always win.

Then somehow the enemy beats them brutally once again. On and on and on all senseless bad without any ending in sight. Just more confusing page filler. Worst part is he skips even what should be the best parts. Then goes on and on endlessly only trivial minutia???

I have reviewed each part of this series so will just say that it is an action-packed, sci-fi space adventure with great characters and a plot that, if not original, has a justifiable cause which instantly puts you into the fray.

There are themes of slavery, power, politics, idiocy, cruelty, friendships and loyalty...to mention a few. It's well written, fast-paced and entertaining. I will admit that I sometimes skipped some of the tech stuff if it went on too long.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read. The prequel and 'silliness' at the end was a good addition.

Highly recommended.

I really enjoyed this series. I read the series bundle version. I felt the series progressed in a logical fashion. Characters were believable. Lots of action. I truly admire the effort the author put into creating the world within which the entire series took place. In some places the story seems a bit slow; but, the author is providing an appropriate amount of story to move into the next series of events. I recommend the entire series as well as any of the individual books. But highly recommend the entire series.

As an avid science fiction reader, I’m not sure about all of these glowing (and short) five-star reviews. Book one was a slog for me, as it just seemed to bog down in parts and it was hard to have interest as mainly the technology wasn’t believable to me.

Thinking it had to get better based on all of the positive reviews, I continued through about a third of book two and had to give it up: too much self reflection, unrealistic technology, and the dialogue doesn’t help with identifying with the characters.

Excellent series

I am continually impressed by the excellent books available online. This series is really well done and provides several enjoyable hours drifting through space with this desperate group of humans fighting to save mankind from the clutches of its alien masters. It's all here ... epic space battles, telepathic aliens, bugs implanted in humans, slavery, rebellion and a kick ass storyline. This is well done and well worth taking a chance on.

Could Not Put the Book Down

Ok I do like Bobby Adair’s books, I have read some of his slow burn series. This set of books where Fantastic. I couldn’t put them down. As with his other books Mr Adair portrays his characters as real life thinking people. They have their high points and lows. The world he creates is vivid and realistic. I do not give 5 stars often but I couldn’t give these books anything less.

Just When I Thought There Was No Hope

Wow, it took awhile. I LOVE happy endings. It didn't look like there was going to be one. But there was! It almost seems this story could go on forever because unless there is some sort of communion with your enemy they remain your enemy. It looks like these "Greys" were driven away but not defeated. Who knows, maybe we will hear from them again. Probably.
