A Carlisle Deputies Novel

Can a couple be more opposite than a thief and a cop? Or do they have more in common than they think?

Mattias stole to survive. He was damn good at it. But there’s no such thing as a victimless crime, and when he saw how his theft hurt people, he resolved to change. Now he works as a consultant, and while helping to investigate a rash of burglaries, he crosses paths with James.

Police Officer James Levinson doesn’t trust thieves, and that includes Mattias. James’s father stole to support himself, and James knows firsthand how that can destroy lives—it inspired him to go into law enforcement. Mattias is no different, from what he can tell… at first.

As they work together, Mattias and James realize there’s something deeper between them than just the physical attraction neither can deny. Given time, they might even grow to trust each other—unless the case they’re working on dredges up pasts both would rather forget.

In this latest installment in the Carlisle Deputies series, Andrew Grey introduces Mattias, a reformed thief who now assists police as a consultant.

When a string of burglaries occur Mattias is hired to consult on the case. Mattias is partnered with James, but James has good reason not to trust a thief, even if he is retired.
“This case is hitting close to home for both of us.”

The longer they work together, the closer they become, and their attraction to each other grows. Inevitably, they come together, but neither is sure if this new relationship can last, and the case gets more complicated and the danger keeps growing.

Sounds awesome, right? So why didn't I like it? I really don't know. I'm a fan of the series. Andrew Grey is who I usually pick up for a good comfort read. He's my go to when I want a sweet, uncomplicated, lovely read.

Something was missing for me. I wasn't invested, I didn't connect to the characters or story, there was a definite eyebrow raise at the coincidental ex machina moment, and the pacing on this was so slow for me. It's taken me almost three weeks to read this. I just...kept putting it down and would have to force myself to pick it up again. It didn't work for me this time, but I'm a fan and I'll definitely read the next book.

Dual POV, light steam, and a happy ending.

"Opposites attract" is a popular idiom used to explain why people who seem very different often end up working well together – in a professional as well as a romantic context. ‘Fire and Obsidian’ is a perfect illustration of how this might work in law enforcement. Mattias is a former thief and James is a detective with a particular, well-founded disdain for thieves. When they are selected to work on a particularly tough ring of thieves in Carlisle and the surrounding towns, they discover not just a rather unexpected common interest, but also some pretty hard-to-fight attraction. The situation made for some fireworks and interesting discussions even before all the twists and turns the author added to the story – resulting in a very entertaining read.

Fire and Obsidian by Andrew Grey brings us more from the deputies in Carlisle. James and Mattias are an unlikely pair, opposites if you will, who spark and connect on a deeper level than each is willing to succumb to, at first.

Carlisle Officer James Levinson is no stranger to the deception of a thief, growing up with a father whose livelihood took from others. Choosing to live his life on the right side of the law, James has put distance between himself and his family. He still loves them but looks the other way when it comes to his father’s proclivities. When push comes to shove, he sides with his integrity.

Mattias Dumont’s past is a tumultuous one. Taking from others was a survival mechanism for him and he was extremely good at. After a unique turn of events, realization hit that there is never a victimless crime. Spurred by his epiphany, Mattias now uses his skills to assist law enforcement professionals with bringing down the bad guy. But, will his past always foreshadow the good he now does?

Temporarily appointed Sheriff Briggs is facing a slew of home invasions that need to be stopped, or come November he quite possibly will be out of a job. His plan? Team up the brilliant James and his partner with Mattias to solve the crimes. Skepticism abounds as several officers on the case are offended that a former burglar will be working the investigation, especially after Mattias demonstrates his skills. Talk about starting off on the wrong foot, albeit an effective one.

Mystery and suspense move ‘Fire and Obsidian’ on a fast pace. As tension builds on multiple fronts, you submerge yourself in the unique brand of drama that is signature Andrew Grey.

Due to unforeseen circumstances James invites Mattias into his home. Here things get interesting. The tension and attraction ratchet up as they work the case while sharing the same living space. Past fears and conundrums resurface as their two worlds collide. Maybe James and Mattias have more in common than each reveal to the world?

Mystery and suspense move Fire and Obsidian on a fast pace. As tension builds on multiple fronts, you submerge yourself in the unique brand of drama that is signature Andrew Grey. Both James and Mattias are rebounding from a crappy upbringing. Each have faced, and are still facing, tough life choices. Their struggles are real and give us pause: I hesitate slightly here because James is a cop but chooses to ignore his father’s profession.

Fire and Obsidian is an excellent addition to the Carlisle Deputies series. Suspense, family drama, and romance, bundled into an entertaining and engaging mystery. It can be read as a standalone but why not enjoy the entire series. I can’t help but wonder what’s next for our boys in Carlisle.

We get an different cop and robber romance here.
James is a policeman, tall, broad chested,

black hair, suit and tie, who is strong and steadfast.
Mattias was a successful thief, who now is a

consultant to help solve robbery cases. He grew up in foster care and learned how to survive.

Why did Mattias and James get under each others skin immediately? They need to work together. We learn both men's pasts, their present, and what they want to accomplish. Caring for folks runs deep in each guy.

The robberies are a puzzle, but the cops investigation keeps getting small clues, they get closer, but who would use kids?

We get stakeouts, and questions asked, plus the mysterious help Mattias gets.

The men are enjoying each other's company and the sexy nights are super.

When everything comes to a peak, there's a couple of shocking reveals.

The story was exciting with the mystery, thievery, and hot romance. Our men deserve to have each other.
ENJOY !

Andrew Grey has thrown us something so very, very different that we usually get from this talented writer. Just reading the blurb will raise your level of disbelief and getting through the first chapter will convince you these two are really going to be way too much enemy material to ever get around to being friends, let alone eventual lovers. Neither man is wearing wings and a halo. We have to have some sympathy for their lives… but it’s difficult to see how Andrew Grey is going to being this off. He cleverly mixes their personal lives in a way that it does make logical sense and they fall in lust…I wouldn’t call it love at this point. The steps do begin to move toward commitment and love at a nice, even pace, There are quiet a few twists that takes place in solving the crime and Mattias and James come out ahead. Again it's great to see ‘old friends from previous books. In this case it’s Pierre and Clay. I wish the books were longer and that there were more in the series but I’ll take what I can get.

Curveball Strikes Out the Side

No, this book has nothing to do with baseball. The headline refers to the fact that Andrew Grey has thrown us a couple of men, and an imaginative plotline, quite unlike anything one might expect from this master story teller--and he is canny enough to get us to believe they can work their way out of it to deliver a victory.

In Mattias and James (on the cover) author Grey has created two of his most introspectively unhinged and wary individuals, men whose lives could not be more different (read the blurb) but also could not be more congruent. Reading the blurb will raise your eyebrows, no doubt, and getting through the first chapter will convince you these two are really going to be too much enemy material to get around to being friends and eventually lovers.

But then an incident occurs totally out of left field which brings them together privately in addition to what they are tasked to do professionally. They slowly begin to reveal their lives, and their fears, to each other, holding back some vital information along the way as they unwrap themselves.

Neither man is a saint, and even though we have some sympathy for their lives twists and turns, it is to Grey's credit that he entangles their personal lives in a way that it seems logical these men in their late 20s, neither of whom has ever had a personal relationship worth remembering with fondness, can quietly fall in lust. The steps toward commitment and love are nicely paced.

There are a number of twists in the solution to the crimes Mattias and James are trying to solve, and it's nice to see Pierre and Clay from previous books in this series are also involved.

But the focus here is on these two deeply conflicted men whose facades are cracked when they get to know each other, and that's a very good reason to get this one. Hope it's not the last in the series, but if it is, it's a worthy one.

The unlikeliest pair...a detective and an ex thief. Can it possibly work? Or will the past, present, and future be tarnished by what one man did in his past instead of what he does now? This was a really good read with twists and turns that will leave you stunned in the end. I really enjoy this series and I am always looking forward to the newest books as they come out. Andrew Grey is an incredible author that has put so much into this series. You can tell that by how each book seems to draw you in and keeps you drawn to the book until the very last sentence. I love books that are able to capture you that way and this book sure did that.

Mattias is an ex thief that has turned a consultant for police departments. After realizing what stealing from individuals did to those that had their things stolen from them, Mattias gave up the profession. He decided to try to make amends by helping police stations catch thief’s instead. He is good at his job but he was better at his last profession. So he uses that to help him teach police and detectives what to look for in order to catch the bad guys.

James is a detective for the Carlisle police department. He was brought in to help to catch a ring of thief’s that has been breaking into homes in the surrounding areas. When he finds out the consultant that the department has brought in to help is also an ex thief, it leaves a very bad taste in his mouth. Once a thief always a theif according to James.

During the first briefing and introduction to Mattias, the group of officers are shown just how good Mattias used to be and how easy it is for even a cop to be a victim as well. But this demonstration leaves an even worse taste in James’ mouth because Mattias uses James in the demonstration to make his point. So things do not start off on good footing between Mattias and James. Then to make things worse they are partnered up together to work this case.

As time goes on and Mattias’ hotel has a power outage with no where else to go, James steps up and offers up his guest room. Though he does not care for the guy, he will not let him not have a place to stay. After some time alone together and so talking these two realize they have more in common then they first thought. Not only that but there is definitely an attraction between them as well. As the case heats up and these two men grow closer, questions still remain between them.

Can two men that are so different figure out a way to trust each other in order to make a relationship work? What will happen when things that look one way turn out to be something totally different? Can these two wade the muddy waters together or they doomed to fail?

This was such a great read. There is mystery and suspense. There is action and even some unlikely attraction. This is definitely one of my favorite books in this series so far. I really enjoyed this read and look forward to the next book when it is available.

Once again Andrew Grey delivers with his Carlilse boys, I sure wish every city had cops and deputies such as the boys in blue in Grey's Carlisle. Some might call Fire and Obsidian an opposites attract trope and they wouldn't be wrong I guess but I don't know as I would label it so. Sure cop and ex-thief is about as opposite as you can get occupation-wise but throw out their profession(or former profession in Mattias' case) and the two of them really aren't all that different. I found them to be quite perfectly suited for each other but for lack of a better label, opposites attract will do.

As for James and Mattias themselves, they each have their faults and fortes and watching the two navigate their way around is really quite fun. Okay, there is plenty of times I just wanted to whack their heads together but there were just as many times I wanted to wrap them in huge mama-bear hugs. For me the fun part came from the journey Andrew Grey took us on while meshing the stubbornness and openness(more stubborn than open probably😉) with the mystery element to get the boys from point A to point Z.

Lets talk the mystery, okay you know I won't touch on that but I loved the idea of an ex-thief running a consultation service to aid the police. Not only is Mattias a thief(former) with a heart whose conscience got the better of him one night but he's now using the knowledge and experience he gathered in his former profession for good. It certainly understandable why James finds it hard to trust him, especially as we learn more about James' past, but Mattias doesn't give up or let James' distrust get him down. I loved how the author didn't let that distrust overshadow the case, James is determined to catch the criminal even if that means working with Mattias.

So once again Andrew Grey has created another great blend of romance and mystery with characters you love to love and love to hate(I won't go into the who in the hating department because that's part of the mystery). James and Mattias may not be my favorite pairing in Carlisle Deputies but I think they make a close second behind Jordan and Pierre in Fire and Flint(book 1), there's just something about their opposites-on-the-surface-but-not-underneath-attract push and pull that makes them stand out and made me cheer for them from page one.

One last thing: if you are wondering about the reading order, each entry really is a standalone but there's a few cameos/mentions that flowed better for me having read the first three but you won't be lost by any means if you start here. Whatever order you read it and whatever trope you label it, I highly recommend reading Fire and Obsidian, the whole Carlisle Deputies series really, as well as Carlisle Cops from which Deputies is kind of a spin-off from. Plain and simple, the blending of mystery, romance, friendship, and heat will warm your heart and put a smile on your face.

James is a devoted police officer that lives for his job quite literally. He has no real social life and is fighting issues from his dysfunctional childhood. He may appear well-centered and in complete control, but no one will guess the turmoil that brews beneath the surface. His father is an undisciplined thief that steals for a living which causes a huge source of shame and grief for James as his co-workers on the force do not know his secret. His family's lifestyle keeps him from having any meaningful relationships. James is honest to the core and despises anyone that preys on innocent people.

Mattias is a former thief who needed to steal for survival to escape a hellish alternative with a dangerous foster parent. He fled his foster home as a scared sixteen-year-old and was in the "business" for a decade. At one point, Mattias had an awakening of sorts and the faceless people he stole from became real victims. He can't replace what he stole so now he works helping various police departments solve complex crimes. This is his way to atone for his past sins. The only part of the job he hates is seeing what he did to the people he stole from reflected in the new victim's eyes. Mattias did not simply change but he evolved into the caring and determined man he is today.

James is forced to work with Mattias as the department's expert consultant due to a series of burglaries, which are concerning because of the aggressiveness of the robbers. They appear out of nowhere and the police are stumped as to how they are gaining entry to the homes they ransack. The stakes are high as the break-ins get more complicated and the thieves appear emboldened.

With James disturbing past it is safe to say the two men butt heads at first but they can only deny their mutual attraction for so long. They are off the charts in the chemistry department. One kiss was so intense "breathing was secondary".

The plot is innovative and fresh and I was pulled into the story immediately. I highly recommend this romantic mystery but please be careful, James and Mattias might just steal your heart.

Talking about opposites attract…an ex thief and a cop? Mattias has been clean for a long time and now works with police as a consultant to teach them how to detect thieves and solve crimes. James knows all about Thieves and doesn’t trust Mattias at all. After all his dad is a thief and he wants nothing to do with that kind of life. It is why he became a police officer in the first place. But when he and Mattias are forced to work together to break up a ring of thieves and help his best friend keep his job as Sherriff, and Mattias hotel gets closed for a power outage fate seems to be intervening.
I really like Mattias a lot. I loved the fact he was trying to redeem himself of his former life and loved his wit and charm. I didn’t connect with James quite as well. For one… being a cop and knowing what his father is out doing to me is a big grey area. BUT… the story is very interesting and the plot good and the budding romance between the two men good too. (I am a sucker for love) Having said all that…I was left with a few questions on the crimes and how things tied up at the end. And neither Mattias or James were actually Carlisle deputies just consultants but having said that… I did enjoy the story and read it in one night. I love Andrew Grey stories and you just cannot go wrong choosing one!
If you like reformed thieves, Police detectives, fast-building romance, opposites attract and a mild, mostly off page, but very sexy story this is for you.

This is another great addition to the Carlisle Deputy series, a fun opposites attract, unlikely couple book where I just fell in love with these guys! James and Mattias are the very definition of opposites on paper, that is until they start to get to know each other and discover that they have more in common that they ever thought possible. Andrew Grey delivers another story that had me constantly curious about these two and how their story was going to play out.

I really did enjoy the struggle between these two, although there were times when it broke my heart. Despite their attraction, there are some immediate trust issues between these two, given their pasts. They try to ignore those issues and embrace that is really between them, until it is something that is right in their face. I loved the chemistry and banter between James and Mattias, they really know how to push the right buttons! They also seem to really understand each other on a level that neither man has experienced before. The real question for them though, is whether they can handle reality when their pasts collide.

As always, I think that Andrew Grey delivers an entertaining and swoon-worthy read that kept my attention from start to finish. There are two characters who have had a tough life, but may just find a chance at happiness they deserve, that is if they can learn to trust and believe in each other. Andrew Grey is a go-to for me and this is a perfect example of why I just love his books!

Loved this book so much. James is detective and Mattias is former thief. They work together to stop the burglaries in the neighborhood. They are funny and their banter was great.

James wanted Mattais to prove he was goo at what he used to do so Mattais delivered and boy was it funny at what he got from James. Mattais more than proved he could do the job, but he ticked James off because of the item he got. James hadn't thought he'd be that good and boy was he upset that he'd gotten taken for.

It took some time but they started getting along. James even offered Mattais to stay with him because his hotel was without power and then got flooded. They worked great together once James put aside his issues. Though James didn't completely do it especially with what went down near the end with James' dad. I did not see that coming at who James' dad was, but what happened I saw it playing out. Thankfully it didn't end as badly as it could have that's for sure.

I felt bad for James because of what his dad did. I wanted to hug him, and James jumped to the wrong conclusion when it came to Mattais thanking the worst, but Mattais was looking out for James trying to spare him the pain that still came to him.

I was happy with the ending, the sex was hot and the engagement was wonderful. Loved this and now only got two left to read which makes me said because this is another series I love so much.

Mattias was a thief. James's father was and still is a thief. Although Mattias turned his life around and was now a consultant for police all around the country, James did not like him for hurting all those people who thieves assume are not hurt by being violated in their homes.

Mattias was hired because there had been a rash of burglaries in the county and the people were losing faith in the sheriff's department. Mattias and James had to work together to find the culprits.
When they narrowed down that the timing of the break-ins were only before school and after school when home owners weren't there, Mattias and James figured that they were using kids to get in and open the doors for them.

The end of town where Mattias was staying lost power and his hotel was not able to provide for him, James invited him to stay with him and things got heated because they were already attracted to each other physically. Trust was still and issue, but as days rolled on, they did learn to trust.

Finding the thieves was done, but they had no idea that the man in charge was still out there till he showed up at James's house with a gun pointed at Mattias and James.

I very much enjoyed this new book in the Carlisle Deputies series and I loved the connection between Mattias and James. They really bring the opposites attract magic! I loved the humor and chemistry the MC’s shared and I think it’s great that it wasn’t too easy for them to fall in love. The trust issues are real and don’t magically disappear after the first kiss. There’s also a very well-written, Big Misunderstanding, that really amps up the emotional intensity of the story. I’m not usually a fan of this type of thing, but the author made it work beautifully.

One thing I’ve come to expect in an Andrew Grey romance is for one or both of the MC’s to get a raw deal when it comes to their parents. Here it’s both. Poor guys. I especially felt bad for James, because his father puts him in an untenable situation, morally and emotionally.

This is a really well-written story, a wonderful combination of romance and suspense.

Lots of former thieves working with cops in pop culture these days!

This book starts out in an amusing way and it had my attention from there. Matthias is a former thief (never caught) who now works as a consultant helping police departments. James is a detective who doesn’t like or trust Mattias, mostly because he is the son of a thief who he has no relationship with and who has damaged him psychologically in so many ways.

As a convenient power outage causes Mattias to have to leave his hotel and James offers his guest room, the relationship between the men heats up as the pressure to solve the string of robberies they are assigned to work on together increases.

The crisis point is easy to see coming and things unfold about the way you’d expect. The resolution is rushed and mostly happens off page which is disappointing. The ending is sweet and hopeful.

Mathias was an accomplished thief for a number of years out of necessity to support himself after his parents left him and his grandparents died. He turns over a new leaf and spends his life assisting police departments and talking to juveniles to discourage them from a life of crime. He meets James when they are assigned to cases of local theft of high value jewelry and art. They are distrustful of one another and then James tells his story of living with a father who supported he and his mother by means of a life of crime. Together they make progress and several arrests and then the leader of the gang surfaces. A very good story with lots of heart warming after tales of difficult childhoods.

That decision had to be the worst crux in a lifetime!

I know we are not our father's keeper, we can make our own decisions. It's hard to do that when we love them dearly, but know that what they are doing is wrong. I go by, " I make my own decisions, I will deal with the consequences." Between Mattias and Elias, Mattias got it, but Elias decided no to worry about it or thought there wouldn't be any consequences. Elias figured, James his son, wouldn't let any consequences happen to him. Too bad children are put into these bad situations by people they thought they could trust and love them. THANK YOU, ANDREW! ENJOY!

Intriguing

An entertaining storyline with likeable, fuly developed characters that each had a tragic childhood that effects their current lives. The dual pov really lets you get to know Mattias and James. I enjoyed their playfulness, sense of humor, snark and teasing, and their dedication to the work they are doing. Their attraction, honest revelations, passion, and unusual connection has their feelings developing quickly but both tend to doubt it is real while hoping it will be true and lasting - which it is - and all while trying to figure out who the thieves are.

I enjoyed James and Mattias, the slow build of the relationship, the push pull of their current lives conflicting with their upbringing.
The string of robberies that brought them together - I wasn't as interested in as I believe the author wanted, but there were some interesting tidbits (the interaction with the kids, the European locks, the resale shop scene) that I enjoyed.

Entertaining

A well written storyline supported by good character development. The slow developing romance and tension in the relationship are well done. Some tension, some drama, no angst and no disappointments. The story ends as anticipated with a promise for the future.

Deep read

This story gave new meaning to the term “dysfunctional family “. To use ones children for illegal gain, whether they are young or old, is wrong on so many levels.
