D.I. Lottie Parker #6

Final Betrayal

Rate this book
‘She lifted the flap of the envelope and pulled out the single white page. As she opened it up she stared, open mouthed. Four words were typed on the page. I am watching you.’

When Amy Whyte and Penny Brogan leave a local nightclub in the early hours of Sunday morning and don’t arrive home, their families are beside themselves with worry. Conor Dowling has just been released from prison, a man full of hatred for Amy, the girl who put him behind bars in the first place.

The case is given to Detective Lottie Parker, when the girls’ blood-soaked bodies are found, days later, in a derelict squat. Chillingly, both girls are clutching silver coins in their hands – what message is this killer leaving behind? All the signs point to Conor but his alibi is water tight.

As Lottie examines Penny and Amy’s final days alive in a desperate search for clues, two more girls are found stabbed to death in a luxury apartment complex. Caught up in what is fast becoming her toughest case yet, Lottie is unaware that somebody is watching her every move.

Then Lottie’s two daughters, Katie and Chloe suddenly disappear from the town centre. Terrified that the killer has her girls, the stakes have never been higher for Lottie.

But as Lottie puts everything on the line to find her daughters and solve the case, she’s about to find herself in terrible danger – someone has a personal axe to grind with her and they know the best way to get to her is to hurt the ones she loves the most.

My name is Patricia Gibney and I’m from Mullingar, County Westmeath. Right in the heart of Ireland. Surrounded by lakes, Mullingar is damp and wet most of the year but when the sun shines it is a little piece of heaven on earth. I’ve lived here all my life. I’m widowed, seven years in May, but was married to Aidan since 1982. I’ve three children who keep me sane, or maybe keep the madness at bay, just a little bit! I say that because I am an artist and a writer. I started writing, for therapy, when Aidan died.

I secured an agent in January 2016 and she is fighting my corner in an effort to get my debut novel published.

Three years ago, I decided to get serious about it. I joined The Irish Writers Centre. Started doing courses. I love reading crime thrillers so it was obvious to me to start writing in the crime genre. And let me tell you, it is not easy. A crime novel needs to be tightly plotted and plotting is the bane of my life. I prefer to write straight off the top of my head. Oh, Oh. Feels good when writing but then comes the editing. I lost 20,000 words in the process. But at least I am proud to say I got it done.

I am now writing the second novel in the series, featuring Lottie Parker and a host of credible characters. They are all part of my extended family, you know the kind – people you love one minute and want to kill the next!

So join me on this journey and lets see where it leads us.

Final Betrayal is a solid, but not great, addition to the DI Lottie Parker series.

Young women are being killed in pairs in the small town of Ragmullin, Ireland. Lottie Parker and team are on the case. At the same time, Lottie’s newly discovered crazy half-sister has escaped from custody and is out for revenge against Lottie’s family.

What I struggled with : The murder mystery didn’t grip me. In fact, I found it boring. I didn’t pick up on the identity of the killer until I was more than halfway through, so it was nice to put my book detective skills to work. At the same time, I just didn’t care enough to become invested in this storyline and when the reason was revealed about why the murderer was killing these girls, I was in utter disbelief, as it was for a pretty dumb reason. Gibney usually writes her mysteries with more tension and depth.

Another issue I had was there were way too many POVs; In addition to Lottie, Kirby, Katie, and Rose, there are at least 3 more, including the voice of the killer. I was able to keep track of everyone as their voices are distinguished, but I found some of their voices to be superfluous. In the end, I understood why all of the POV’s were included, but it was frustrating reading all of the POV’s. I feel like this story could have been told in a different way.

What worked : Finally, Lottie’s character showed some growth! She has calmed down a bit and is taking baby steps in her relationship with Mark Boyd. She even finds herself being happy, well, until all the murder and mayhem begins! Lottie, her family, and team of detectives are the reason to read this series. I am invested in their lives and rooting for them! I wanted to hug poor Kirby, who is still recovering from the events of the last book.

Even though I didn’t love Final Betrayal, I would still recommend this series for its compelling and lovable characters!

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley and Bookoutre in exchange for an honest review.

3.5 stars, rounded down

I’m a huge fan of the Lottie Parker series and have been from the very first book. This book, not so much.

Two young women disappear after an evening out. Their bodies are found in an abandoned house with silver coins in their hands. It doesn’t take long for another pair of young women to be found dead. As if Lottie didn’t have her hands full enough with work, her half brother arranges for her half sister to be given a day’s pass from the insane asylum and then manages to lose her. And her new boss cares only for a balanced budget. I can’t say I fully bought into this story, especially the part about her half sister. Since when are folks deemed dangerously insane allowed day passes?

Once again, there were multiple possibilities as to who could be the murderer. Maybe I’m reading too many mysteries, because I was fairly confident in whom I believed was to blame. There’s a lot going on, with the multiple storylines. This is hard to explain, but I felt like Gibney was manufacturing the sense of anxiety. Too much back and forth and it just didn’t feel real to me.

As with every book in this series, a lot of the strength is in the team’s relationships, especially the growing one between Boyd and Lottie.

My thanks to netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of this book.

Happy Publication Day

Okay, I went into the sixth book of the series with trepidation. I saw "final" in the title and was worried that it was the end. So, let me assure everyone that in the author's note Patricia Gibney does state there will be a book seven. Thank goodness because Lottie as per usual leaves her partner, her best friend, and my fictional soul mate, Detective Mark Boyd, hanging once again. Lottie, after six books, I just want to let you know that I really, really want to throttle you! Boyd, forget about her and take a chance on me. Patricia Gibney, thanks for a frustrating epilogue but tie it up for us in book seven -please!

Now that I have gotten that off my chest, let's talk about the other storylines. Lottie and her team are still reeling from a loss, while adjusting to a new teammate, a crazy boss, the press and budget cuts. The Parkers have moved into their new home, but change is pending for all Lottie's kids. Lottie's biological family continues to carry its share of woes. But most importantly the team has to deal with a killer who likes to take two women at the same time.

One of my absolute favorite series, I never have difficulty finishing any of them and immediately fall under their spell. Looking forward to number seven!

Up to now I've really enjoyed this series starring DI Lottie Parker and her team in Ragmullin, but this one isn't quite up to the mark. It could be that Lottie's character flaws such as her impatience with the pathologist, flouting the rules, dislike of the superintendent and on-again, off-again relationship with DS Mark Boyd, are all becoming a bit tiresome and she needs to pull herself together and move on with her life. Or it could be that her family always seem to end up as victims and the author needs to start leaving Lottie and her kids (and extended family) alone and find some fresh ideas.

This episode kicks off with the abduction and murder of two teenage girls followed a few days later by the disappearance and murder of another two young girls. Lottie's mad half sister has escaped during a day out from her insane asylum and wants revenge for Lottie putting her away. When Lottie's daughters Kate and Chloe go missing Lottie doesn't know whether the killer or her half sister has taken them and is beside herself with worry. The investigation limped along until the killer and the motive were (not unexpectedly) revealed. Hopefully the next episode will re-invigorate this series if it is to continue. 3.5★

Final Betrayal is book 6 in the Detective Lottie Parker series, a series that I thoroughly enjoy. I do recommend that you read this series in order. By book 6 there is a lot of history and you will want to know it all to enjoy this one. Lottie is a tough nut, she loves her family and her work and her life is very complicated. But she never lets anything get in her way of solving the case and locking up the guilty. Her personal life is pretty much non existent. She isn't always the most likeable of characters but she is endearing in her own special way.

This time we see Lottie and her family move into their new home and hopefully a new start for them all. When 2 young girls go missing after a night out on the town she is put on the case. A few days later their bodies are found and it becomes a murder case. All fingers point to Conor Dowling who has just been released from prison, but he has a tight alibi. Days later another 2 young girls are found dead in similar circumstances. While still investigating these murders 2 of her daughters go missing and it becomes personal..

I hope that this book is not the end of Lottie Parker, especially after the way this ended. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for my advanced copy of this book to read. All opinions are my own and are in no way biased

So I have a little confession to make. This is the first of the authors books I have read. Shocking I know! I usually try to always read books in a series in order but sometimes for some reason this goes out the water and you start quite a bit into it instead.

Having not read any other books in the series I did worry that it may spoil my enjoyment somewhat but I needn’t worry. The author gives enough background so I knew what I needed to know from previous books but I will warn you that as soon as you finish this one, you will be racing to buy the others!

I have to say what a book to start with in the D.I. Lottie Parker series. From the opening chapter I knew I was in for a dark and gripping read. Lottie and her family have moved into their new home which should be a fresh start for them all, sadly someone seems to have other ideas for them. Lottie not only has that to contend with but her and her team are working on trying to catch what looks to be a serial killer in their midst.

There are so many heart stopping moments that had me hold my breath. I was carried along by the authors writing, making assumptions along the way. Lets just say nil points to me as I totally got it wrong.

Final Betrayal is a story that is guaranteed to set your pulse racing. I was totally hooked and enjoyed being part of this thrilling journey that I was taken on alongside Lottie whose character I really enjoyed. Without a doubt I will be going back and reading the rest of the books in the series as this just ticked all the boxes for what I look for in a crime series. Great read!

My thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.

I loved this series at the beginning but the last couple hasn’t been up to par. The main problem I’m having is Lottie. She’s really become annoying. She has problems which make her relatable but nothing is getting solved. She’s not growing as a character, so we’re hearing the same things over and over again with her. Another issue is that her family is ALWAYS involved in the drama of her investigations. Can’t Gibney give that a rest? That entire family needs therapy! There’s nothing new or fresh about this latest story. It was, quite frankly, grating on my nerves by the end.

Firstly of course I must thank Net Galley, The author and my favourite publisher Bookouture, who seem to have a collection of great authors.

Final Betrayal , number six in the Detective Inspector Lottie Parker series.

hen Amy Whyte and Penny Brogan leave a local nightclub in the early hours of Sunday morning and don’t arrive home, their families are beside themselves with worry.

The town of Ragmullin is one of my favourite settings and I love how vividly Patricia Gibney brings it to life, though I’m not entirely sure it’s a place I’d want to go to.

The story also continues to follow they every growing family life of Lottie Parker. Now in her new home, her kids and her mother Rose. The surprise visit from her half-brother Leo, who has taken her half sister out of and Asylum and she has knocked him out and escaped. Not forgetting the close relationship, she has with partner Boyd and trying her best not to show and deny the real feelings she has for him.

A lot of depth of personality and character is a very much part of these books, and gives these a real down to earth honesty, and her every growing relationship with Boyd.

A great book, but my only real problem with this book was I felt maybe a little too long by 75-100 pages, but saying that I know we were following three to four main characters, and three stories, if you include Lottie own life, the case from years ago, and the ongoing case.

Other wise great characters, well paced, gripping story. Great finish

Detective Lottie Parker is back in the sixth instalment of this gritty, suspenseful series. She's called in as lead investigator when a gruesome and grisly crime scene is discovered. There's plenty at stake in Lottie's most difficult case yet and the book crackles with tension. Fraught with danger this is a thoroughly gripping, twisted story with many surprises and plenty to throw you off the scent. Gibney once again shows that she knows what her readers want and gives it to us in spades. Final Betrayal is well written and immersive with a cast of three-dimensional characters and edge-of-your-seat excitement and unpredictability which fizzles throughout.

For crime aficionados, this is a must-read series, but each book can be read as a standalone as the main plot is self-contained. This one of my favourite reads so far this year and an excellent addition to the series. Roll on the next instalment. Many thanks to Bookouture for an ARC.

The 6th outing for Lottie Parker and while i did enjoy it I have to say it wasnt my favourite in the series.

Two girls are found murdered in a derelict house, both having their throats slit and a plain silver coin left beside them. Could the killings be connected to recent release of a prisoner who has returned to Ragmullin after spending the last decade in prison?
Lottie and her team are on the case and when two more bodies turn up they are convinced that the ex con is their man. But are there other secrets in Ragmullins past? A web of deception and secrets that could lead eventually to finding the killer.

We also have a side story of Lotties "mad" half sister who is released from care for a day but manages to escape and look to exact revenge on Lottie and her family.

So this was enjoyable overall, it always is spending time with Lottie and her team. The slight misgiving I have is the strength of the story. Lottie and her family again are under threat and it just seems to happen in every book now. The family stuff just seemed a distraction in this book, the half sister story a little fantastical.

Despite these misgivings, this is still a very enjoyable read. Lottie is a fantastic character to spend time with. The series is so strong that nothing short of greatness stands out a mile and theres a bit of that here.

Many thanks to Netgalley, Bookouture and Patricia Gibney for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Lottie Parker series just gets better and better with each book released and Final Betrayal was just another amazing and gripping read. The town of Ragmullin is one of my favourite settings and I love how vividly Patricia Gibney brings it to life, though I’m not entirely sure it’s a place I’d want to live.

With all of the history surrounding Lottie and these characters, whilst it can be read as a stand-alone I do recommend reading the entire series beforehand, not only are they some of the best crime fiction books out there but also because you will build up a connection with these characters and really become invested in their stories.

I don’t want to to see too much about the plot but what I love about Patricia Gibney is her talent at writing brilliantly twisted mysteries. So much goes on in her books with plot threads going off on tangents before converging at the end into fantastic finales. It’s an expertly and intricately-woven plot that completely had me consumed as I read, it was one of those books I was constantly thinking about when I wasn’t reading it, with ideas of where the plot was going to go in my mind. With Lottie’s personal life once again playing a huge role in the story, there’s a lot going on here and it really was a fantastic read from start to finish. Roll on book seven.

Final Betrayal is the 6th instalment in the Lottie Parker series. Which, I have loved from the very first page.
This story starts again in the Irish town of Ragmullin. Two women (and friends) are found dead with their throats cut and with a metal disk found on their possession. They straight away suspect Conor Dowling, that has been recently released from prison after 10 years. Which he claims he was wrongly convicted, and he is innocent. The two dead women gave statements at his trial that he was at the scene of the crime.
The story also continues the person life of Lottie Parker.
The is another great instalment in the Lottie Parker series. With its great storyline, gripping plot and lots of twists and turns. I love the gutsy character of Lottie Parker. She is not the best of cops, but she works hard and gets the job done. The only quibble I have that this part of the series I thought there was a bit too much going at times. So for that I give 4 stars.
Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for a copy of this book

I have liked this series from the beginning. Lottie is a character that is full of flaws that has evolved and grown throughout the series. She has also been to hell and back and certainly marches to her own drummer. She is also very good at her job.

This, unfortunately, is a weak addition to the series. I think the main spoiler is the story line of the half brother who is a police officer from New York who somehow manages to get a criminally insane woman who is kept handcuffed out on a day pass and then loses her. I found this questionable and unlikely.

There is a series of murders of four young women who are found with coins near their bodies. Three of them provided evidence against a young man in a horrible crime 10 years ago. That man has just been released from prison and is the main suspect. There is plenty of other action and Lottie's two daughters get caught up in the crime.

I will read the next book in the series because in spite of everything, it was still quite readable. It was still a let down and I hope the next plot becomes a little more believable.

Thanks to Net Galley for a copy of this book in exchange for a fair review.

Two young women are murdered after a night out. It so happens that someone they both knew had just been released from prison -- Conor Dowling -- and they were the ones who'd identified him and secured his conviction for assault and robbery ten years ago. Is this revenge? Then two other young women are found dead.

Meanwhile, Detective Lottie Parker of the Ragmullin guard and her team are pulled this way and that by other events and complicated situations. Not only with her job, but Lottie is also having some series issues in her personal life -- and then her two daughters go missing. NO SPOILERS.

This is the 6th book in the series and I've read all but one. I think it's getting a bit stale as this wasn't as good as the previous. Lottie's family is totally messed up and she has a lot of issues, not the least of which is her total focus on work and her haphazard mothering and family life. Don't even get me started on her current romance. This plot wasn't very exciting or thrilling and if there was any twist, I missed it as nothing about it surprised me much. I had to force myself to finish, which is unusual as I typically like long-running detective series so maybe I'm just tired of the same old, same old. I'm not sure if I'll keep on with Lottie or not at this point.

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this e-book ARC to read and review.

Please see combined series review on my blog at https://www.robinlovesreading.com/201....

We literally jump into the action from the very beginning in book 6, Final Betrayal, Lottie and her team are called to a murder scene where two female bodies are found. To her annoyance, her team members try and hold her back. When she does enter the scene of the crime, she is immediately reminded of a case from years ago that has a very eerie similarity to what is before her now. And this is why they tried to keep her away. Not only must Lottie bring the past and present together to solve the murders, she faces the terrifying fact that her two daughters, Chloe and Katie, soon disappear and she is quite naturally overwhelmed with worry for their safety. This is a hard-hitting story and was literally impossible to put down.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Final Betrayal, the sixth novel to feature DI Lottie Parker of An Garda Síochaná, Ragmullin.

Ragmullin is unusually quiet but that changes when Councillor White reports his daughter, Amy, missing. She was last seen at a club on Saturday night and it’s now Tuesday. Superintendent McMahon makes it Lottie’s number one priority although it’s not long before Amy and her friend Penny Brogan are found murdered in a derelict cottage. At the same time Lottie’s half brother, Leo Belfield is back in town with bad news.

I thoroughly enjoyed Final Betrayal which is another action packed hunt for a serial killer. The novel moves along at a fast clip, not just from the action but also from the format which switches perspective and introduces a host of characters at a regular, almost frenetic pace. Initially this is quite confusing but as the reader gets used to the characters it becomes interesting and quite compulsive. I found myself looking forward to the different sides of the story and working out where it was all going. I did guess the killer about half way through but had no idea of motive. Not that it spoiled the read in any way as Ms Gibney had a few more twists to insert before the denouement. It becomes a compulsive read.

I like Lottie Parker with her chaotic life and keen investigative instincts but sometimes she can be exasperating as a fictional protagonist because she’s very emotional and finds it hard to keep a level head. It makes her endearingly and believably human but, sometimes I wish she’d think first.

Final Betrayal is another good addition to the series so I have no hesitation in recommending it.

This is already book 6 in the series but only my second one. I was utterly captivated by the previous part and this one was a nail biting, chills down the spine running, nailing to the chair kind of book. This story was not filled to the brim with suspense. Oh no, it was overflowing with suspense!

Lottie Parker is a very interesting character. She does not always follow the rules, but she certainly delivers.

I like the relationship between her and Boyd, but I think he must be a saint sometimes. Even though she does not always treat him in a very nice way, he always has her back.

It’s not surprising the author is a million-copy bestelling one, because it’s, in my opinion, very hard bordering on impossible not to be enchanted by her books. 5 stars.

Thank you, Patricia Gibney, Bookouture and Netgalley.

I love love love Lottie Parker but I didn't like this installment as much as the previous ones. The main issue is that everything is so personal. I've said this before about this series - it's like every monster out there is out for Lottie and her family. It would be good to have a case with no connections to the main character. That said though I liked the cliff hanger and hoping she doesn't mess things up.
