When a friend drags Agatha “Aggie” Bowles to a romance convention, all she wants to do is find some new authors and a quiet spot to read. Instead of relaxing with a book, she ends up kidnapped by a steampunk cyborg.
Which is as exciting as it sounds.
Except for the fact he’s more interested in the cog hanging around her neck than Aggie herself. He’ll do anything to get his hands on it. Problem is other people want it, too.
Can this cyborg relinquish a priceless treasure for love?
Hello, my name is Eve Langlais and I am an International Bestselling author who loves to write hot romance, usually with werewolves, cyborgs or aliens .
I should warn you, I have a twisted imagination and a sarcastic sense of humor something I like to let loose in my writing. While well known for my shifter stories, I am also extremely partial to aliens, the kind who like to abduct humans and then drive them insane...with pleasure. Or do you like something a little darker, more serious? Then check out my cyborgs whose battle with humanity have captivated readers worldwide.
Steampunk science fiction romance. First in the Mechanic Origin series. The best part of this story is the real life example start of the Romancing the Capital Reader Conference in Ottawa Canada and the preference of the heroine to just stay in her room and read. I think every reader conference attendee feels this urge. Plus the true to fact hotel setup with daughters helping at the registration table is amusing and adorable. Fortunately science fiction makes this story’s path much more unlikely with a cyborg kidnapping one of the readers. And a few surprises by attending authors! From there, the story becomes standard fare. The science fiction genre for this author seems to be less humor, more cogs. And bumps since I stumbled on several text editing errors in the paperback version. Interchangeable. But still entertaining.
Overall enjoyed the romantic growth of the hero and look forward to the next of his crew to succumb to love. 3.5 bumped to 4 because of the Reader conference experience.
Actually I made it through 112 pages before realizing that it wasn't developing into a story I wanted to invest more time in. It's simplistic plot and prose were boring.
It appears focussed on the YA crown of which I have not been part of for decades.
It sounded promising when I was looking for a Steampunk story but it doesn't vene get close to the work of George Mann and others in the genre
This was utterly ridiculous. In one sense I can't really fault it for that. It's absolutely not supposed to be anything else. This is written to be cotton candy enjoyment with no depth or subtly. But in another sense, I have to admit there just wasn't enough here to keep me interested.
Oddly, if there was more sex in it, I might call it Porn With Plot, and thus say it's exactly what it set out to be. But there's really not much sex in it at all. The thing with Porn With Plot books is that you don't expect much more than an outline of a plot to hang the sex on. The Porn is the primary component, the With Plot secondary. This has about the same amount of plotting, but not the sex, which leaves it feeling flimsy at best.
The mechanical writing and editing is pretty good though. It's certainly readable. Just maybe not for me.
I really liked these characters, and I thought the storyline was extremely engaging. My only real complaint is that it all felt a bit rushed. It was almost like the author was working under a page number limit. I thought that there were several scenes which could have been fleshed out better. It was a good story, but with some more details, it could have been a great story.
I'll admit I read this book because of the title and that a friend enjoyed it! The beginning was fast paced! The story line then sucked me under and I had fun going down the wormhole!
I enjoy Ms. Langlais' work as a rule, but I think I appreciate her shifter stories a bit more than her scifi works. There's nothing wrong with them, per se—in fact, I like that she often has a grittier, more realistic, and borderline grim vision of life off-planet—but something about the romances I've encountered so far just do not quite click for me. The romance in this one is...nice, but it's not particularly steamy. I would have liked more story for more build up and organic relationship development. It just feels...rushed with some conflict horned in. Really, the antagonist was the least enjoyable part of this; I get disappointed when they're one-note and flat with little given motivation beyond, "be EVIL." I would have loved more room for that scenario to build up and play out as well. There is some really interesting steampunk-esque scifi happening in here, though, and I am quite curious how these gears are supposed to work, and more information on this "living metal."
Will I read any additional books in this series? Not likely since I prefer SFR with humans as an element, but you never know.
--------- So why the problematic shelf?
There's a group of nomadic aliens briefly mentioned in this story referred to as "space g*psies." Since "g*psy" is a slur—one North Americans are not as familiar with the history of and still often think is something cute and free-spirited—I felt the need to mark it. If the intent was to express these aliens were nomadic rovers, well, those words obviously exist without having the use a word that is offensive and demeaning.
G*psy and words derived from it are racist to the Romani in Europe—there's even a term specifically for this, "antiziganism". A lot of Americans still do not seem to be aware of this, so it's worth pointing out so it can hopefully be replaced with vocabulary that works better. If you know better, you can do better.
Wonderfully arrogant cyborgs and the ladies who put their gears in a twist (although sometimes the ladies are cyborgs themselves, but that's another story for another day) are the THING I've been craving. Jwls certainly has the arrogant part down. To be fair, he does have some stellar upgrades and, by most of the universes' standards, Earthlings are kind of backward. Not to mention, the planet is in the far end of nowhere, so not many people (augmented or otherwise) go there.
Basically, in the eyes of the universes, Earthlings aren't just backwards, they're country-bumpkin backwards with no clue what's past their atmosphere.
I have to say, that doesn't stop Jwls from liking what he sees when he abducts Aggie (for her own good) and stashes her away on his spaceship. Aggie, being an enterprising Earthling, does her best to drive Jwls crazy and freeze up his gears every chance she gets. Jwls, being an arrogant cyborg, doesn't realize how effectively Aggie's inserted herself into his space until he is faced with giving her up.
Cyborgs, man. They never see the big fall coming. *thumbs up*
Eve has never disappointed her readers. This book was interesting and different than her usual but I still I enjoyed it. I did find a few edits that were missed but it wasn’t a big issue with the story to not keep it moving. I can’t wait to meet the other crew members and the only real complaint I have is it was to short for my liking. It wasn’t rushed just would have liked it to have more before it came to end.
What a great first in series! It was action packed, unexpected, a roller coaster of emotions, and completely captivating. Jwls and Aggie are completely different, but their differences are part of what draws them together. Through danger and heat, the two individuals pull together and show how resilient they are together.
It sounded interesting. An introverted woman goes to a Romance conference and is abducted by a sexy alien. I'm willing to suspend my disbelief to enjoy something like that.
Unfortunately it really wasn't about much of anything. The cyborg is the member of a crew hunting parts of a "god cog" and she ends up with it implanted in her face. Then they leave Earth to get it removed (for no good reason--he could have removed it immediately after they escaped other hunters, except he didn't want to scar her face); they go to another galaxy to get it removed, but the surgeon wants to sell her and because Jwl is in love with her by then, they fight their way out and escape; they go to his home and his crew shows up and he buys their share of the cog, and that's about it for plot. Other than that, it's all about the hunky cyborg and the shy human being hot for the human, them having constant sex ("he was two hands around"--does anyone actually think that would be comfortable?), and her being too freaking stupid to live. All she does is scream, talk when he tells her to be quiet--even after explaining why--and just generally act like an idiot. There were parts that I think were supposed to be funny, like the "hero" being named something that sounded like Jules Verne. But they weren't. It was a pointless book with annoying characters.
This is the first book I've ready by Langlais, but I don't know that I'll bother to read a second one. If I do, it certainly won't be in this series, which I assume are about the other members of Jwl's crew, because they were all unpleasant and I really don't care what happens to any of them.

When a mercenary team goes in search of the God Gear, an enhancement that could bestow perfection in the wearer, only to have its creator explode it sending pieces off into space, they have moments to put some kind of tracker on a few of the pieces. Jwls sets off to track one of the pieces, following it to earth. On earth Aggie Bowles is at a romance conference when a drone appears at her hotel room window, drops off the gear and disintegrates. She attaches the gear to a necklace she wears to the steampunk costume ball. As Jwls confronts her for the gear other alien mercenaries make themselves known and a battle ensues leading to Jwls kidnapping Aggie and taking off into space. So begins a great adventure. Very fun story, though it could have used some editing.
3-3.5 stars I did like this, but there were some things that ...I don't know, I always find the first of a series a little difficult, there is so much an author has to do. Aggie was a little annoying, not that I don't understand all the questions, but dear god even I was annoyed --lol. Jwls was a jerk. I wish there had been a little more time spent with Jwls and his crew so we could really get those connections and I wish there had been a little more Aggie and Jwls as well, so mostly, I just wanted more. Will continue this series though, its my kind of thing.
An entertaining sci-fi novella. Not my usual choice but I read it for a book club and I really enjoyed it. There was a lot of action, which was fun, but it felt very very rushed. The book could have easily included more detail and kept my interest. An interesting culture-clash with reverse-Pinocchio themes.
An exciting and fast paced read! Shy Aggie is dragged to a romance convention where she gets abducted by a steampunk cyborg. At first she thinks it’s a joke, but then when Viola Grace and Susan Hayes start attacking her abductor, and Viola starts shooting, her embarrassment at being the center of attention turns to terror.
Jwls needs to collect the cog that currently adorns the snarky human’s neck. When she doesn’t give it up willingly, and it ends up attaching itself to her, he has no choice but to kidnap the entire package. Mina Carter, always the helpful one, and helps him get her out.
An adventure-filled trip through space, where tensions and desire threaten to derail Jwls plan to retrieve the cog and meet up with his crew. Close calls and a crash bring them closer together, and when push comes to shove, his priority is Aggie.
Being very familiar with the romance convention, Eve, Viola, Susan, Mina, Boo, and Gabby, I loved the reliving of my times there! It actually was quite accurate – but I must have missed Susan’s rainbow hair flying around, if a steampunk cyborg showed up at one!
An interesting start to the series, and I look forward to seeing how the relationships between the rest of the crew develop as they search the universes for the missing cogs.
While it's an interesting twist to make steam-punk cyborgs high tech and human civilization low tech, combining it with a cosplay convention event made one of the most intenseness scenes very confusing. Add to that a sprinkle of MIB and you're lucky if you're not left really confused. It appears that the author at times gets inspired and doesn't always think things through fully before she goes full steam ahead with the narrative. The main characters doesn't seem fully fleshed out and a bit mechanical at times, but that's not unusual in any romance story, where the story tends to take precedence over the characters lives and consistency. It's a good enjoyable story that takes you into the mechaverse. While it's a fun romp, it's not a toe-curler for me. In my book in a cyborg erotic romance the mechanical parts should come into play at least once. Otherwise what's the point?!
I enjoyed the story, especially since I attended that event a few times and it brought back great memories, recognized a few of the characters too. The combination of steampunk and sci-fi is interesting and the author does 'different' very well. I loved Jwlls' despite his gruff demeanor. Aggie was a bit annoying at times, but she is a human thrust into the unknown and she deals with it the best she can, I guess. The story has suspense, action, humour, but I found it was too short, I wanted more. The crew members picked my interest and I am looking forward to the next book. - 4 stars
My first listen from the narrator, he has a good voice but the performance of this book is not for me. - 3 stars
This was one of those I borrowed and started without paying too much attention to the book description so of course, I got completely boggled by the difference in characters and settings between the Introduction (humans on earth) and Chapter 1 (cyborgs in another planet/universe). It was a little discombobulating as well that the audiobook had an error (started with chapter 1 then Introduction then Chapter 1 again!)
I did like the different storylines for their own merits though of course, the story of this novella didn't really start until these worlds collide and even then, argh, the romance is just too slow. Once, it got going though it is so spicy ;p Let's just say that I didn't particularly love the story (I had so many questions!) but it was rather a hoot.
Eve Langlais did it again! I do not know when I have giggled at a book as much as I did this one. It helped I think that I had been to one of the Romancing the Capital conferences and had met some of the authors who made guest appearances in this book. That being said, this book was amazing without the inside jokes. As always, the story is fast moving, well written and intelligent. The characters are well developed and interesting. The plot has some twists and turns that are fun to figure out. I absolutely recommend this book to anyone who likes a bit of fun and adventure in their reading.
This is a great story by Eve Langlais. I love reading anything by her. I never want her stories or series to end.
Jwls is on a mission to find a cog after his retrieval of it went wrong the first time. He is taken to Earth where he meets and kidnaps Aggie. Aggie ends up with the cog that he wants. She bonds with it and he needs to get it off of her. During their journey, things change between them as they get to know one another. Will they realize what is most important before it’s too late?

Steampunk Cyborg packs a wild punch! What a fascinating and thrilling read! I simply loved every second of this wonderous adventure. It only kept getting better and better. Nothing prepared me for the amazing twisted and turns, and I had hoped for a longer story. However, I savored the entire journey no matter the length.
Any scifi fan would enjoy this story. Give this story a chance, and I can guarantee you will enjoy every part of it. It is fabulous, and I look forward to reading more of this thrilling series.
What happens when a crazy earth female gets herself kidnapped by an alien cyborg intent on taking a valuable gear away from her. Since the gear has embedded itself into her face, Jwls is forced to take her with him to his space ship and find a space surgeon to remove it. Aggie is inquisitive, talkative, and just a pain in Jwls butt. Danger is everywhere and Jwls must decide his next move. Will be let her be killed to get the gear out of her face or allow her to seduce him? Great book!
Yet another book to be embarrassed by. A Siyborgh tracks the God Gear to backward Earth, where the cog is sealed into some chick's face. Instead of killing her, he abducts her, chased by unknowns, holds a feather hostage with a gun, and then gives money to his friends. I do not know the point of this book.
This book is riddled with typos, homophone & homonym errors, pronoun errors, incomplete sentences, awkward phrases, clunky paragraphs, weak plot, and annoying women. The author also injected herself and some of her friends into this book. Read at your own peril.
This was free from Amazon and it's definitely interesting, mainly since I wasn't sure what to expect from steampunk cyborg, I've never really read anything like this.
However, it's pretty cool, has some humour and a HEA like ending, but since book 2 continues with another character you can't say for sure. I did miss some more explanation, in particular to the cog in Aggie's head, that's the one thing that really felt unfinished about this book, but hopefully, in the coming books, there's some more info on that.
I was given this book for free in a give away by Eve and this isnt something is usually buy for myself, as it didnt look like my thing. After reading it ive changed my mind! It was brilliant, i really loved the whole concept of this series. I've just bought the book First Gear to read and hopefully thats as good as this! Some humour, romance, drama and action in this book and its perfect for me 😁
This book is a perfect mix of steampunk and alien worlds. What starts as a retrieval turns into a HEA that will make you smile. It may take a long journey bypassing bad guys and surviving Aggi’s snark, but there is enough laughter and happiness to keep you intrigued until the end. I can’t wait to read the next book.
This was a lot of fun, with the perfect amount of snark! A great blending of earth and earthlings, and those from other galaxies, who are, but aren’t, just like us. Steampunk, but not really. Sci-fi, but not really. Alien and alien-keep away authours, oh yes! A little bit of everything, and some sexy tension build-up, before getting down to business 😊
This was a good scifi read, and the addition of steampunk, which is new to me, made it interesting. It was full of action and adventure. I like Aggie's personality, and their interactions. It was a different type of read , but still very enjoyable.

This story took a while for me to warm up, I persevered because I usually love this authors books, and it turned out to be a good story, with an interesting plot, and some amusing parts too. I am pleased I finished it, the ending is definitely a lead in to future stories in this universe
