Dark Arts #1.5

Hell Rode With Her

Rate this book
Fiction, Novelette

David Mack’s Dark Arts series continues as the wizards of World War II become the sorcerers of the Cold War in the globe-spanning spy-thriller The Iron Codex—available now from Tor Books.

In celebration of the book’s release, we’re thrilled to present “Hell Rode With Her,” which takes place during book one of the series. David Mack explains:

“This novelette is a story arc that was excised from the first Dark Arts novel, The Midnight Front. It details events that befall Russian-born sorceress (aka “karcist”) Anja Kernova after she deserts from the Red Army in late 1943.

This was in fact the first part of the Dark Arts series that I wrote, and Anja’s confrontation with her countrymen during the Great Patriotic War sets the stage for the series’ second book, The Iron Codex, in which Anja is the chief target of an international magickal arms race in 1954.”

This was a fantastic way to get back into David Mack's Dark Arts series. I read the first book, The Midnight Front, over a year ago and was thinking about getting into the second book, The Iron Codex. When I looked at the series on Goodreads, I discovered this story set during the events of the first book as a sort of prequel to the next.

This is a short, action-packed story that got me way hyped to get into the next book. Having been so long since I'd read the first book, I was concerned I would be completely lost as to how the magick in this series works as well as the various characters and story elements from the first book.

This novelette does a fantastic job of quickly resetting the stage for someone like me. I was up-to-speed in no time and was along for the ride as Anja Kernova, a Russian-born karcist (sorceress), escaped the clutches of the Red Star.

It was short. It was fast-paced. The action was great! 5 out of 5 stars from me and now I'm off to get into The Iron Codex!
