Caitlyn Davis expects her sophomore year at UCLA to be perfect...until she walks into her dorm room to find Special Agent Zoey Kaplan of the FBI waiting for her. In that instant, she knows her idyllic year with new best friends, Nicole and Dale, along with her super hot boyfriend, Eric, is about to fall apart.
Having been forced to work with the FBI months earlier, Caity accidentally gave away her special ability to read people's emotions and know whether they were telling the truth. Now, Kaplan wants Caity to go undercover again for a secret operation that will bring her close to the sadistic Diego Mendez, a man believed to be involved in human trafficking.
Eric Shore is not a man who trusts easily. Having been burned multiple times, it’s hard for him to open up completely, but his love for Caity makes him want to try. Yet, her sudden withdrawal worries him, particularly when she chooses to spend time with her new roommate, Quella Mendez, over him. When Caity’s behavior begins to match that of her wild roommate, Eric wonders if their relationship is as strong as he believed.
As Caity struggles to maintain her relationship and do her job, she finds herself pulled further into a dangerous world that could take away everything she holds dear. Will Eric learn the truth in time to save her? Or will the man with the eyes of a snake destroy their perfect romance?

Snake Eyes is the third book in Melissa Pearl's Masks' series. And what a rollercoaster of a ride it was to read this book! About halfway through the book, I wanted to throw my iPad across the room. I was so angry with what was happening to the characters in the book! But I knew Melissa would not let me down. By the time I finished the book, all I could say was, "Holy Crap on a Cracker!"
Caity and Eric just finished a wonderful summer together, which they deserved after what they went through in Two-Faced. They are back at UCLA and it's the beginning of Caity's sophomore year. She and Nicole are roommates once again and things are looking great! The year looks to be even better when Eric and Dale end up with an empty bedroom in their house and ask Caity and Nicole to move in with them.
Unfortunately, Kaplan, the FBI agent we love to hate, chooses that moment to show up and coerce Caity into helping her with another case. This one involves Diego Mendez, a man involved in human trafficking. Caity has seen the news reports of the kidnapping and disappearances of these girls. She is heartbroken over what is happening and can't find a way to say no to Kaplan. What Caity doesn't realize is the devastating effect that decision will have on her relationship with Eric.
Kaplan tells Caity she cannot move in with Eric. And since Nicole is moving out, Kaplan arranges for Mendez's daughter Quella to become Caity's new roommate. This leads to numerous problems for Caity and Eric, and things only go from bad to worse between the two of them. Kaplan has forbidden Caity to tell Eric what she is doing so she must lie to him. Given Eric's trust issues, he cannot help but doubt everything about his relationship with Caity.
It was at this point in the book that I about lost it. I was so angry with Kaplan and quite frustrated with both Caity and Eric. But when things took a turn for the worse for Caity and Eric, it also ratcheted up the action in the book and I couldn't put it down.
I've always said I like a good mystery with a healthy dose of romance. This one had both - it's just that the romance occurred in the beginning and all the action and mystery was in the last half of the book, leaving you with a MAJOR cliffhanger ending. It's a good thing Book 4, Poker Face, comes out next month!
If you enjoy romance, mystery, and even some international intrigue (habla español?), then get yourself a copy of Snake Eyes!
Caity and Eric are just trying to get back to a "normal" life after Two Faced, where she became involved in the whole drug doping gambling Professor Hoffman fiscal with the FBI. However their social, school and relationships peace does not last long. Now while Eric would rather Caity never involve her self in any more dangerous situations, other forces may not let her go or give her the option. Caity is gifted and it's those gifts that may also be her curse that may be her breaking point and all her relationships too. Danger never seems to stay far away from her and how can Caity justify turning a blind eye to things when she has a gift that can help?
I enjoyed this book but it was just really hard to watch Caity get pushed into a difficult situation and have her hands tied, again. Obviously she wasn't allowed to give away certain things when put into a situation, but with Eric's trust issues, it's obvious how bumpy this book was going to turn out. Eric tried making their relationship more and scored brownies points in this book, but I kept wanting him to trust Caity more even if things seemed sketch. He should know her enough by now to know when she's playing a part and not being herself. Even Dale trusted Caity more in this book than Eric did. Oh, and poor Nicole, Caity's roommate and BFF, was a bit sidelined in the story, but she is awesome when it counts. Plus I still absolutely love how Dale and Nicole are integrated in this series.
Overall, I liked the book but I'm extremely excited to get the last book as the ending should be epic! This books ending is a cliffhanger, but Melissa has graciously planned it out, so her readers won't be left hanging for long. Which is good, because phew! there are some things in this book that will make you cry, so keep some tissues handy if you are anything like me. And be prepared to be a bit caught up in the book, so I suggest placing a "Do Not Disturb" sign till you finish the book. Caity and Eric have to be together that's all I must say, but I'm sure Melissa won't disappoint her readers as she hasn't yet in my humble fan biased opinion.
This has become my favorite book of the series so far because finally Eric and Caity are together! Eric is a sweetie and I love that he loves Caity so much and of course Caity loves Eric just as much. I went from loving Eric in book one to slightly disliking him in book two and then love loving him completely in book three. He was so understanding of Caity and I loved their Taco Tuesdays! Of course this couple will run into some problems like always. Caity just can't seem to keep out of trouble but that is what I like about her. She always tries to help others no matter what it costs her but this time the price might be high.
Just when Caity and her friend Nicole were about to move with their boyfriends, Dale and Eric, she is forced to say she doesn't want to in order to stay in her dorm. This time, agent Caity as I like to call her is kind of coerced into helping Agent Kaplan (Man I do hate the lady) stop Diego Mendez who is involved in human trafficking. To do this she must stay in her dorm to make friends with her new roommate Quella who also happens to be the daughter of Mendez. Quella has been homeschooled, sheltered all her life, and received everything she ever desired but she wants to live the college life. This leads to Caity partying almost everyday which leads her away from her friends Dale and Nicole as well as Eric.
In order for this case to work Caity must find out information from Quella but she is more reserved that Caity thought. Caity must keep trying to find out where the secret location is and where the kidnapped girls are being sold before they are crossed over the border. Kaplan blackmails Caity into doing things that are bad and I hate her for it. Caity has to do it if not bad things will happen so Caity agrees. Interesting things start to happen then and just when you think your safe something happens that makes me want to punch something. This book ends in quite the cliffhanger but it excites me for Poker Face which is the next book in the series. I am ready for you Poker Face and I must say that I really need you right about now!
Title: SNAKE EYES Series: Masks #3 Category /Genre: NA, Contemporary Drama, Romance Recommended for: 18+ due to sexual content Received from: Melissa Pearl (in exchange for an honest review) Grammar/editing: ungraded – book received as an unedited ARC / errors excused
This is the third book in the Masks series. They do need to be read in order.
After nearly getting herself killed (again) last year, Caity is avoiding her special gift and trying to just live her life as a sophomore in college. Her boyfriend, Eric, may not trust easily, but for Caity he is willing to let go and try. His trust will be tested when unbeknownst to him Caity has once again been pressed into assisting FBI agent Kaplan with an undercover operation involving human-trafficking. Can Caity juggle the job, school, friends, and Eric without losing any of them?
I love this series. Caity has such an unique gift that she tries to use only when necessary (like beating the smug out of an arrogant older brother – trust me, he deserves it). Ultimately, I feel bad for Caity. She is always trying to make everything better for everyone else, so much so that she doesn’t say “no” when it may be the best answer for herself and her closest relationships. Once again, she feels obliged to make the world a better place for those who may be in danger. Eric may be humanly flawed, but that just makes him all the more loveable. Eric’s past will come to haunt them both, even when he doesn’t know the truth about that past. Agent Kaplan is tough as nails and determined, but you have to wonder if she isn’t skirting her own criminal charges when she puts Caity in danger once again.
Ever the optimist, I put myself through a ringer hoping for the best only to be crushed and then riding the crest of hope again. All of the characters are well-written with complete distinctive personalities. The story is one-of-a-kind and hard to put down. I look forward to reading the next book in the series. You can already tell that POKER FACE is the perfect title and I can’t wait to see what Melissa Pearl has in store for us!
Once again, Caity has brought as to the world where what you see and what someone's feeling is totally different. This time, she is bound to risk her life to help several girls find their way home while risking not only her life but also her relationship with his boyfriend Eric.
This installment of The Masks series is nonetheless another wonderful creation from Melissa Pearl. From the way each character continues to grow, to having additional characters whom you can love and hate, it's definitely a page turner book. On this book, I'd say the character that caught my attention the most is Kaplan. She was someone tolerable in book two, but this time around I can definitely say that I hate her and her guts. True, her intention to get the job successfully done might me be good, but her ways are annoying. The way she blackmailed Caity is I say one step short from being a good guy to a bad one. It just happened that she was on the right side of the law. Which didn't made her any more less annoying.
Eric on the other hand was okay. I still can't feel all that serious about the relationship going on with him and Caity. It's probably due to my bias on their age but I feel that he still need to prove his worth before I really believe that his and Caity's relationship is something that will be for a long run.
It's nice to see Nicole and Caity's frienship getting stronger and also being tested in this book of the mask series. Quella on the other hand is still someone to watch out for. Rhode seems to me to be a lot more than the guy we saw in this book. Gramps - Eric's grandfather was such a breeze in his old age I feel like crying for him.
Of course, Melissa is so lovely to leave us in such a cliff hunger I almost felt sorry for my self. But then, it also made me all the more excited to find out what awaits us to the next book in the series.
All in all, I had a great time reading and feeling nervous with all the way Caity is now her power.
Caity & Eric had a Great summer break together and both have grown quite close with Dale and Nicole since the Hoffman incident last year.
Caity is hoping to have a better year this time round without any awful things happening. Nicole and her even get asked to move in with their boyfriends Dale and Eric but something ends up making Caity back out last minute. She scrambles for an excuse because something Horrid has happened and Agent Kaplan walks back into Caity's life and forces her to help solve yet another crime. What is this crime I speak of??? Caity will go undercover and befriend her new room mate Quella the daughter of an infamous mob boss. Kaplan needs proof that Quella's father is doing very shady business and Caity's the girl for the job. Caity struggles with being two different type of people... one for Quella her new room mate/friend and the girl Eric fell in love with.
Eric keeps having doubts that Caity is hiding something from him but tries to give her space and remain patient. Caity doesn't know how much more she can take lying to everyone she loves but she can't help but want to solve this crime badly. She is torn and being pulled in so many different directions wanting to be a normal girl in love having the average college experience with her boyfriend Eric and goofing with her friends but also wanting to help people who are in trouble and protect them.
How will Caity handle all this pressure? Can Eric & Caity's relationship survive all the secrets and lies? Will Caity solve this Heinous crime before it's too late? Find the answers to all these questions and more when you BUY a Copy TODAY!!!!
I received this book from Mark My Words Tours in return for a fair and honest review.
Oh man, I've followed Caity and Eric from the start and have loved their stories. Following the near-miss FBI incident, Caity, Eric, Nicole and Dale have all grown closer and grown up. Things and life have moved on and they are all happy and in a good place. Of course, you know it's too good to last but you just can't help hoping. The fun and games start when Agent Kaplan turns up to throw Caity's life into disarray once more. She knows just what to say and which heartstrings to pull on to get Caity's co-operation and after all, if that fails, there's always good old-fashioned blackmail.
Things don't go smoothly and Caity is given an ultimatum by Kaplan, who proceeds to threaten Eric's life if she doesn't comply. So, of course, she does. After all, she loves him more than anything. Things definitely get hairy from then on in but I'll leave it there and just say that you really need to read this book/series.
One thing I will add is that up until now, the stories have been self-contained. Not this one! Holy Cliffhanger Ending, Batman! The ending to this one left me with a major book hangover and I ended up re-reading the last few chapters again the following day, just to make sure I hadn't missed anything out. I am now counting down the days until Poker Face is released.
If you want a gripping, thrilling and adrenaline-filled paranormal, contemporary romance then I suggest you look no further! Highly recommended.
A good read in this series but I found it a bit hard to get back into the story at first.
I loved the first two books in this series and read them quickly. However, when I started Snake Eyes, I found the first half of the story a bit slow-paced and found it hard to get back into Caity and Eric’s story. The premise about Caity being recruited for a job again by the shady FBI agent Kaplan was good; I just expected there to be more action/mission-related stuff happening early on since Caity was recruited pretty early on. Instead, there was really only a bunch of drama about Caity trying to balance her commitment to helping Kaplan with the case against her friends, personality and relationship with Eric. Despite it being a bit slow, this part of the story did give an opportunity or two for Caity to stand up for herself – it was good to finally see as her character was beginning to seem like a pushover. Once I got past the first half of the book, the pace of the story picked up a lot. It became a lot more exciting and I found myself unable to stop reading. IN fact, I’ve already moved on and read most of the next book in the series, Poker Face, as I couldn’t stand not knowing what happened after the cliff-hanger ending to this story.
Overall this was a great read. I’d recommend it to fans of Melissa Pearl who have read the first two books in the series.
Snake Eyes is the third book in the Masks Series by Melissa Pearl and continues the story of Caitlyn and her unique talent for seeing behind a person’s mask - an ability to see their 'true face'.
Yet again, Caity finds herself thrust into the middle of a scary situation by the FBI. Only this time, she can’t tell Eric and that means their relationship becomes strained. So much so that it puts all that they have worked towards in jeopardy.
It took me a few chapters to get into Snake Eyes. I found the writing a little stilted and the flow suffered somewhat, but as I am familiar with the series and the author, I figured the story would soon pick up and the writing would even out. And for the most part it did – but I have to say for me, this was the weakest story of the series so far.
The emotion of the story (which I have always found to be pretty much spot on with Melissa Pearl’s books) just felt off kilter to me. I failed to connect beyond the words on the page; the story, the characters, the relationships, they all felt forced.
It pains me to say it, but I struggled to stay interested in this story... and for that reason, I’m giving Snake Eyes 3 stars.
Caity's gift of being able to strip away people's masks and see their true emotions has gotten her into trouble in the past as she tried to help people but that was nothing compared to the trouble she gets into here. This was considerably darker than the previous books in the series as Caity is forced to help the FBI uncover a human trafficking ring.
Special Agent Kaplan very successfully separates Caity from her friends and from Eric, all for the supposed greater good. Eric, with his trust issues, struggles as Caity withdraws from him. Will he realise what's going on in time to save her?
While Caity's gift can be used for the greater good to help people but it can be manipulated by those who know her secret to get what they want. Caity's desire to protect those around her from harm makes it even easier.
A fast paced and a full of emotions read. There were a number of times while reading this that I wanted to scream at Caity to stand up to Kaplan or reach in and shake Kaplan. Her desire to get results at any cost makes her incredibly dangerous. Really, really need to see how this great story continues.
Snake Eyes, The Masks Series #3 by Melissa Pearl 5 stars
I'm kind of reeling from this cliffy right now. I could not put this book down, I had to finish it! Caity and Eric just don't deserve all the emotional turmoil they keep getting thrown at them. Caity's sight seems like more of a curse than a gift. Kaplan really gets on my nerves the way she pushes Caity, and I hope in Poker Face Caity can finally stand up to her, and not let herself get manipulated again. Poor Eric has so much hurt still as part of his baggage, that as much as he wants to trust Caity unquestionably, he can't help but have doubts. I was so glad that he figured some things out in the end. Caity is stronger than ever and thinks on her feet even faster than before, but she doesn't deserve everything being done to her. I really hope there's an HEA at the end of this for Eric and Caity, their love story is just too sweet to not let them have it. Best book of the series so far!
Oh My Freakin God this book was good. The only problem I had was it ended in one hell of a cliffhanger. I am going to say a few things but try not to spoil this for you. I want to kill the fu..ing FBI agent Kaplin, she is one evil bitch. And i know she is most likely why a key figure in Katlina and Eric;s life is killed. I can't say who as it would tick you off and it happens near the end of the book. I am Lived at this evil you know what, but i have to wait till the next book to see what happens to her. I so hope she gets hers. Melissa Pearl is an amazing writer, she holds you hostage to the bitter end. I stared reading and just could not put this book down. I suggest you go get this book ASAP as the next book comes out in February, so at least we wont have to wait to long.
I hope you enjoy this book as Much as I did.
If you do like this book, please consider leaving a review.
The Authors really like it when you do, they value your opinions too.
Yay!! It's finally out. I've been so excited about the release of this book, because I feel like it's some of my best work and Poker Face - the next book - is even better. This story just get so intense and action-packed. I felt like I was writing an episode of some crime show. LOL :D So much fun!!!
I love the relationship between Caity and Eric in this book. In Two-Faced they had a few issues, especially Eric, that needed working through, but it's made them super strong in this book and I loved writing their romantic scenes so much. They are gorgeous together and so meant to be.
Yes, the cliff-hanger is a nail-biter. I felt kind of mean, but it was the right place to end the book and will hopefully get you super excited about reading the next one. I've worked extra hard to get you Poker Face within the month. I didn't want anyone to have to wait too long.
I really hope you enjoy the conclusion to this series. It was a total privilege to write it :)
~~I received this in exchange for an honest review~~
This is the third book in The Mask series. I couldn't put this book down. It has suspense in it. There is a small amount of danger where you jut suck your breath in and you don't even realize that you are holding it.
I need to read more of what happens. I need to see what is going to happen with Caitlyn. I know this is a short review, but I don't want to give away anything. Just let me tell you this, this book will pull at your heart. It will test your strength to not want to yell and scream at the FBI agent yes, she is back, and she is on a very dangerous mission, and doesn't care who gets injured or killed in the process!
Get this book, if you haven't started this series, you are missing out!!!
Once again Melissa Pearl continues the Mask series in a way that just astounds me. Each one we see how far Caity has learned to adapt with her powers and her man, Eric. These two are so cute with each other but there is a villain, the FBI. Everything they had wished and hoped for in college goes up in flames because of Kaplan. Now I`ve always believed there was some good in an authors charactes but dang I really hate Kaplan. There is so much about Eric`s past we don`t know and it all comes down to Caity. Tons of action in this one and man beware Melissa Pearl definitely knows suspense to the point where I`m like nooooo..Definitely a series you don`t want to miss.
Its now Caity's second year of Uni and things are going well until FBI agent Kaplan shows up and talks her into helping her with an undercover assignment to help find some girls that have been stolen. This forces her to lie to her friends and more importantly her boyfriend which causes problems all round.
I don't want to give any more away but its a must read and will keep you hooked from beginning to end. You will want to read the final book Poker Face as soon as you finish this one.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review. Roller coaster ride of emotions is how I would describe this book. Melissa has created a strong female character, Caitlin, who has really made me think if I would be able to stay sane if I had the same abilities she has had to deal with in life while trying to go about everyday activities. A riveting story with dynamic characters. My only disappointment is that I have to wait for the next book to resolve the cliffhanger at the end though that makes me excited as well.
I have to be open that I'm the publisher of this book, but I can't help from writing a glowing review. The Masks Series is a wonderful series by Melissa Pearl that seems to get better with each book. "Snake Eyes" has been my favorite to date as main character Caitlyn gets into even more precarious situations and puts herself on the line for what she believes is right.
Here's a secret...the follow up, "Poker Face," is a must read as this one ends with a cliffhanger. And, Poker Face will not disappoint!
I could not put this down! I love me some caity and Eric! Even fell in love with Rhodes a little bit :-) Do I think it's mean that I have to wait for the next one? It's not only mean, it's damn near torture.
. BOOK RATING: 4.75 Stars SERIES RATING: 4.75 Stars REVIEW: THE WHOLE DAMN SERIES HAS BEEN ENJOYABLE but this one was crazy good. It doesn't matter how real or fake it was at times. I loved the book from start to finish.
As usual, a few things I loved and a few things I didn't, but overall, another good book that immediately made me get the last book. Caity and Eric are back at school and hoping that things will get back to normal, and for a short time, they do. But just as things start to look promising, Agent Kaplan strikes again. When asked to assist on another case, Caity doesn't want to risk her relationship with Eric or her life, but Kaplan plays on her sympathy for the missing girls and she reluctantly agrees to help. Things get complicated when Caity begins to realize that lying to Eric may not be the smartest thing to do, and just when she decides to do something about it, her worst fears are realized. Kaplan will do anything to win her case, including sacrificing Caity's relationship and Eric's life. Now it is a matter of time before Caity finds herself in alone and in danger, with her only support group having no idea where she is, or how to help her.
The one thing that always drives me crazy about this series is Caity's lack of backbone when it comes to Kaplan. Her instincts tell her to trust her friends and boyfriend, but it is always almost too late before she realizes that she can't rely on Kaplan alone to keep her safe. Kaplan's agenda doesn't always mesh with following the rules, which means back up isn't always available when Caity needs it most.
The one thing that I do love about this series is that no matter what gets thrown at them, Caity and Eric stay strong. They may have some bad moments, but ultimately make it back to each other.
I am loving this series, but you must read the previous 2. This one ends in a cliff hanger that picks up in book 4. My heart was racing towards the end. I kept thinking why are you doing this? But there'd be no story if she didn't. Caitlyn's power to see beyond peoples' faces and into their emotions is a badly kept secret. The FBI wants her and so do the bad guys. Kidnapping, murder and danger make for one exiting tale.
Caitlyn and Eric's story continues in each book with suspense, a little bit of supernatural thrown in and nail biting scenes. Each book will entail another story to unlock to find the real truth behind the people who she loves, protects and also her enemies!
Wow, absolutely excellent. This has been the darkest and most emotive book in the series thus far. Poor Caitlyn, and what a cliff hanger. Definitely cannot wait to read the final book in the series.
