4.5*s. Keira Dominguez is fast becoming an auto-download author. To date, she’s written three books and the two I’ve read I’ve loved.

’He loved her. And he had made a career of laying siege to strongholds.

Set in the same world as Sweet Rowan but written and set before it, this book tells the story of Penny’s older sister, Beatrice. When Beatrice’s parents find her floating at the age of thirteen, they consider her magic a curse. Fearful that others will find out their secret and ruin their family, Beatrice is hidden away. They put off her coming out as long as they can but when Beatrice hits twenty, they can put it off no longer. The only solution is to dress Beatrice abominably and make her act worse to ward off prospective suitors. But when Captain Henry Gracechurch sees Beatrice spurned on the dance floor, he can’t help but take pity, and when he glimpses the real Beatrice below the facade, there’s no chance he’ll be brushed away.

I like Beatrice but not as much as I loved the free-spirited Penny. Beatrice has had a harder life and has to make harder decisions; the result is a girl torn in two by warding desires and sensibilities. Henry, though, I loved, even more than gruff Malcolm. He’s got a heart gold and cares for the hearts of others, no matter society’s opinions of them. He suffers nightmares from his time in the war but isn’t afraid to fight for what he wants, even when that means fighting the woman herself. I was definitely swooning.

Having first read about Penny’s relationship with her magic - her adoration of it and the desperate lengths to which she goes to get it back - I found it interesting to read that, not so very many years ago at all, the family had such negative impressions of it. The Thornton’s have had magic in their blood for generations but those inflicted by it - the last being Beatrice’s father’s sister - are locked away, denied marriage or children or any company but family. It’s a desperate state of affairs and one that Beatrice had all but resigned herself to before she met Henry. Penny has her sister’s strength and determination, and Henry’s kind acceptance, to thank for her happier life. It certainly puts things in perspective.

On to book three. I can’t wait.

Keira Dominguez gives us a fresh take on the traditional Regency romance. Beatrice Thornton has a secret, a disability if you will, that she must keep from Society. Not even her sisters are allowed to know. The measures taken, by her mother especially, to keep the secret seem harsh, and you want to really hate her mother, but then her mother shows that she means well.

Anyway, Beatrice meets Captain Harry Gracechurch, recently arrived home from the Peninsular War, and almost immediately, sparks fly between them. It seems obvious that they would be a perfect match. Note: Harry has what we call PTSD, and Keira’s depictions of it are spot on.

And then Beatrice receives the first blackmail note. Someone knows her secret, and trust me, it’s a secret that would definitely cause her to be ostracized, and maybe worse. She feels she has no choice but to protect her family and even though I was screaming at her, one admires her character.

I loved Beatrice so much. Her sister, Penelope, is delightful. Harry is - *sigh* - *swoon* - delicious, studly, courageous, well, you get the idea. I really loved Beatrice’s father; he’s witty like Mr. Bennet, but with integrity. Beatrice makes a lifelong friend in Margaret (is she sequel bait? Please, pretty please, Keira?!) and there is a really spectacular villain.

I mentioned earlier this is a traditional Regency, so there are no sexy times, either on or off the page. However, there is a boatload of sexual tension, a really well-thought-out plot, and plenty of twists and turns.

I can't think of a single reason not to consider this book amazing. As soon as I finished I wanted to start it over immediately. I anticipate many rereads of this one.

9/21/20: Maybe even better the second time. I love this story. Henry Gracechurch is up there with Captain Wentworth, Gabriel Oak, and Percy Blakeney in the list of marvelous leading men.
.
11/8/20: Yep, I read it again. This time as a group read with the author. I love this story, and getting some background info was so fun!
.
1/25/22: I have approximately 946 books sitting, unread, on my bookshelf and kindle. So, naturally I decided to read this delightful book again. I love this story so much.
.
6/1/24: This book was calling to me from my bookshelf. I'm glad I answered. It really is just so good!

DNF at 24%.

I’ve been in search of a new author of satisfying historical romance with some attention to historicity. Good word of mouth made me think Dominguez might be one. The blurb held appeal as well.

The book begins as Beatrice Thornton is being fitted for a new wardrobe. The modiste is puzzled and frustrated; when Beatrice’s sister made her debut, their mother collaborated in selecting flattering colors and pretty fabrics for her older daughter’s wardrobe. For Beatrice she chooses only frumpy, unattractive clothes. The dressmaker advises Beatrice to make the most of her shawls so that her season will be a success.

Beatrice knows her season never will. No man can be permitted close enough to discover a secret that taints her. If the truth comes out, her family will be disgraced, their names and reputations ruined. Beatrice must stay dowdy; she can’t have suitors or even friends.

But at her first ball, Beatrice unexpectedly snags the interest of a man who could become both. After she is stranded in the middle of the ballroom floor by another man, Henry Gracechurch, a young captain back from the Napoleonic wars, steps into the breach. Battle-weary Henry feels rested and revitalized in Beatrice’s sweet and witty presence. The next day he asks to take her to the park. Beatrice accepts but her mother is alarmed.

There’s a lot to like in Her Caprice. The main characters are quick-witted and softhearted. Their banter is clever and they have nice chemistry. Henry is honorable, kind and loyal; he politely resists when a friend presses him for secret details about the war. Beatrice listens with empathy. She is lonely and longs for companionship. Their dialogue is lovely and suited to the time period.

Unfortunately my interest dissipated when Beatrice’s dark secret was revealed.

Sometimes the weakest thing about a book isn’t content but misleading marketing. The packaging suggests that Her Caprice is a historical romance, not a historical paranormal. And the text doesn’t clarify this upfront either. There’s nothing to hint that the secret involves a magical ability until the first major turning point at 20%. The plot hinges on the secret, so it’s not as if the fantastical aspects of the story are mere side elements. They play an important role.

I spent 20% of the book wondering what Beatrice’s secret could possibly be and when it was revealed I was thrown for a loop. All the expectations that the book created turned out to be false. It’s not that I am categorically opposed to historical paranormals—I might have liked this one if I had known what I was about to read. But since I didn’t know it felt like a cheat. I tried to stick with the book but couldn’t. When an author betrays a reader’s trust, it’s hard to have faith that there won’t be more unwanted surprises.

Keira Dominguez did a bang-up job with her leading man. As a military wife, it’s refreshing to see a novel that doesn’t romanticize war. Captain Gracechurch is a courageous and honorable man . . . with a realistic touch of post-traumatic stress. How Beatrice reacts to those moments shows a lot about her character—and you can see why he falls in love with her.
Beatrice herself is strong, intelligent, and beautiful (though at the beginning no one sees it). I didn’t realize how much I liked her until I wanted to yell at her somewhere in the middle. You only yell at people you feel strongly about.
Not only did I feel the spark between them, but the subtle, ongoing romance of her parents was charming. In the beginning, her mother, Mrs. Thornton, is overbearing, but still has a likable side. It would have been easy to simplify her into a two-dimensional evil stepmother. She wasn’t, and the book felt so much more authentic because of that. And then there’s Mr. Thornton. I liked him almost as much as Captain Gracechurch. He was a wonderful father with strength, kindness, intelligence, and humor. His one-liners were always perfect.
The last quarter of the book unfolded in ways I didn’t anticipate. I could barely put the book down. Without spoiling anything, I felt like both the Captain *swoon and sigh* and Beatrice have opportunities to prove their courage and fierce loyalty.
To top it off, Her Caprice goes above and beyond a typical regency-era novel in its historic references. From a visit to parliament to the peninsular war, I felt immersed in a very specific time period. I actually looked up some history when I was done. Everything I found matched what was represented in the book!
I will be rereading Her Caprice.

I am so pleasantly surprised to be giving a romance five stars. I have tried romances on and off again through the years and either they were so filled with gratuitous sex scenes that end up making the sexual aspect of a relationship feel very casual and meaningless or I got bored about 25% of the way through the book. From start to finish I could not stop reading this book. I was so desperate to know what would happen between Beatrice and Henry. The characters seemed so real to me and the dialogue was superb. Whether it was witty banter or conveying their hearts desires Keira Dominguez made me feel that I was right there with them. I also appreciated how each character introduced felt distinct. I never mixed up who was who. There was also a wonderful balance between action and dialogue. All in all, a very satisfying read.

Regency sweet romance with a touch a magic. This is generally NOT my interest at all, but this story immediately drew me in. There is mystery, witty conversation, conflicting family dynamics, and ultimately heroism and love. I closed the book with a big smile on my face.

I have a soft spot for clean Regency romance. I can’t seem to get enough of it, which is why I happily said yes to a review copy. I must admit, though, I was a little nervous going into Her Caprice. The Regency romance market is saturated, and not all of it is good. Thankfully, I had nothing to worry about. Her Caprice, was fantastic. It was well researched and written, had fully developed characters and had a fun, fresh story. Romance, secrets, villains, adventure, and a little bit of magic. It had it all and I was along for the ride all the way to the end. I highly recommend it. Oh, and did I mention, all from a debut author? I can’t wait to see what she writes next.

I usually don't read romance novels, but I'm glad I trusted the reviews and gave it a try.

Beatrice is to be hidden away, pushed into a life of solitude because her mother is afraid that if Beatrice's secret get out it will ruin her sisters chances of a normal life and ruin the families good name. Her mother is harsh and controlling....rules the home. But societies rules must be met too. So Beatrice gets to participate in her Season to find a husband, but she is dressed not to impress in anyway, just to be overlooked. But Henry is a man of honor and rescues Beatrice from the hurtful actions of others and love is given a chance. I loved Henry!!

This is a sweet romance with a bit of magic, courage and adventure!

There are 2 reasons I didn't give it 5 starts. One, the story repeats itself while Beatrice is trying to decide about her life and I never understood the reason behind her secret. Yes, it was hereditary, but there isn't alot of information about why, how and who in past generations. For me a few of the story lines could have been tied up better by the end.

An enchanting tale of love, hope, and devotion.

I loved this story! It delivered everything it promised, with a few genuine surprises along the way.

Beatrice's wit and charm disrupt the careful, lonely path laid out for her, forcing her to truly consider what her heart needs. Despite her best intentions, Henry's gracious aid in a vulnerable moment opens the door for an unexpected affection that soon becomes more. His tenderness, balanced by strength, gives her hope that she might not have to choose between love and safety. But the crushing threat of a secret revealed puts more than Beatrice's own future at risk. Can she protect what she loves, without giving up her chance at joy?

A truly uplifting romance!

4.5 stars This was a really entertaining read. The book takes place during Regency times, but there is this element of magic that makes it feel a bit like speculative fiction or even a fairy tale. The characters are unique and charmingly quirky. I loved Henry! While he and Beatrice fall hard for each other, I liked that the instant connection didn't just spin into insta love, but they really developed a relationship and I was completely cheering for them. Some fun twists throughout the story kept me turning pages until I read this in one sitting. It was too good to put down.
This is a clean romance. There might have been a couple of cuss words, but nothing that moves it from a PG rating and there was no inappropriate sexual content.

This book was not what I expected, but I enjoyed it. The main love interest was a classy, easy-to-love guy and I appreciated the main character's development arc. The writing was pleasing and free of typos. I will be looking into more books by this author.
I did receive a free copy of the book; all opinions are decidedly my own.

Ah a wonderful Regency romance novel that has an unsuspecting twist to it. I found myself feeling a vast amount of emotions as I read along with Beatrice. She may have been dulled down on the outside but she kept that fire alight inside. Then there is Henry who stole my heart the moment he saved her on the dance floor *swoon*. It has so much to offer with balls, courting, swoon worthy moments, fierce determination, clean romance, an vile antagonist, friendships, and the fight to make your own path in life. The whole ups and downs of the story, made me say one more chapter many times!

This was an endearing regency romance with a hint of magic. The hero was as honorable and swoon-worthy as an Austen love-interest. Also, the family dynamics were lovely! So well done!

There is so much to love about this smartly-written regency romance. Complex characters who take their destinies into their own hands, swoony dialogue, a perfectly rotten antagonist, and just a touch of very inconvenient magic that manifests at literally the worst times. It all adds up to a wonderful slow burn romance that is full of secrets, deception, intrigue and adventure. And love. (Not at all what Beatrice thought she'd be in for when she embarked on her sham season.)

I love regency-era novels and this book did not disappoint. The characters were strong, the regency language was well-researched and the romance was perfect. I didn’t expect this story to be suspenseful, but near the end I couldn’t wait to see what happened next. If you’re looking for a great, clean, romance novel with a twist, I would highly recommend this one!

I loved this book! It is a perfect clean Regency romance! The writing is superb. One of my favorites: “Her look was an icy dagger and the captain should have, by rights, been bleeding at her feet.” I enjoyed the plot, the twists, and the action. I would have liked more magic, there was just a touch of it. I like the way Beatrice’s attitude toward her magic changes. Henry is a fantastic love interest. He was brave, sweet and honorable. So good! I will enjoy re-reading this. And I look forward to more books by Keira!!

Such an interesting and unique spin on Regency, to add a dash of fantasy/paranormal while still keeping the world very much grounded in reality. I loved the premise, the complex characters, and the riveting plot. Beatrice and Henry are absolutely perfect together, and he overlooks her unfortunate wardrobe for her wonderful personality. They have great chemistry and I thoroughly enjoyed their scenes together. It was fun to see her overthrow her mother's rules and her own inhibitions and embrace life to the fullest with the help of her friends. There are some angsty parts where Beatrice waffles back and forth between accepting or rejecting Henry that got on my nerves, but fortunately the plot veers in another more suspenseful direction and kept my interest for the climax and satisfying resolution. So glad to have discovered an exciting new series!

5/2021:
4.5 stars. The writing is superb. And now that I know that there will be magic, I don't feel so sideswiped by it.

10/2020:
There are many things I love about this book: it's a fresh spin on regency romance. The author has great word choice and imagery. Her characters are real. The writing style is unique, especially for this genre.

But as with all fantasy books (is this fantasy?? sort of? not really?), I kept waiting for the "why". Why does she have the ability to rise? Why is it only her (or her family)? Why does no one else have their own special abilities (maybe they do, but it's not hinted at here). I felt like there should be more even more "fantasy" to it, just to make it not seem quite so weird that Beatrice can rise straight up on the air. I kept waiting for it all to be explained, which is really the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars. I've never been good with fantasy books, or books that even hint of fantasy, precisely for this reason.

I will happily read it again, though. Maybe I missed the explanation somehow.

I am a big fan of Georgette Heyer's regency novels, and I love the series of books by Patricia C. Wrede and Caroline Stevermer (Sorcery and Cecilia, etc...). This debut novel hits somewhere in between. It's fantasy, yet it doesn't lean very far into magic, which is a very clever line to walk. Without giving any spoilers, the magic portrayed here is at first considered a curse - more of a disability than otherwise.

The main character (Beatrice) has a depth that I really enjoy, faults and strengths that I can identify with. She isn't one of those impossibly beautiful and perfect regency debutantes. Beatrice has masses of self-doubt to overcome, plus a boatload of guilt that has been ladled on heavily, with a well-meaning hand. Her choices may seem capricious on the outside, but being privy to her thoughts the reader knows better.

Her Caprice is a gentle romance - no heaving bosoms or bodice ripping - suitable for young and older readers alike.

Delightful, clean, regency romance with a twist.

Beatrice is the only girl in London this season who isn't looking for a husband and if Mama has her way no one will even look at her. Nevertheless she catches the eye of a perceptive soldier who tries to alter their plan. Will Beatrice's secret prevent their love or will they rise above?

I was really impressed with this book!
I read the first few chapters for free with the Amazon preview thing and was immediately drawn in. So I bought it and finished it in a matter of hours.
It was so good! The plot wasn’t too predictable and the reveals near the climax totally surprised me! I really hated the villain and at one point I was mad at the main character and had to take a break from reading to sort out my feelings, but I did somewhat understand as I came back to it why she was being stupid.
Really, it was masterfully done and I cared about all of the characters, which made it really hard to read when things started to go wrong for them.
I think Keira Dominguez is a masterful writer and her story is really clever and original and full of heart and emotion.
It also was very romantic without making it feel dirty or anachronistic for the time. I did not feel the need to roll my eyes or shake my head either. The mutual attraction and sexual tension between the main characters I felt was perfectly portrayed, and the ending was entirely satisfying.
It is truly a sweet, clean romance.

I have read quite a few debut books in the past couple of years, and knowing they are first time authors I think I am pretty good at being more forgiving and tend to keep my expectations a bit lower.
However, I had heard from quite a few people I trust that this one was really good, so maybe my expectations were higher than usual. Even so, I seriously was not expecting it to be this good!

In fact I’m kind of sad I read it so quickly. I may just read it again so I can enjoy it at a slower pace. (If that is possible. 😁)

I actually read another Jane Austen inspired debut novel last month and while I did quite enjoy it, it pales in comparison to this book for so many reasons. (I’m glad I read it first though, or I might not have enjoyed it!😉)

I absolutely recommend this book to anyone and I’m very excited to read the next one!

Also, this is the kind of book I wish I could write. Well done, Keira Dominguez! You are my hero!

Keira is a great writer, and "Her Caprice" was a fun, quick read.

The story is about Beatrice, who is living with a secret known only to her family. It needs to remain a secret to prevent Beatrice's family from ruin. But it's time for her "season" in London to find a husband. Her mother takes her to have ball gowns made but insists they are made in a manner that will leave Beatrice unappealing to any man who might look her way. When Henry Gracechurch, recently returned from the war, sees Beatrice abandoned on the dance floor at her first ball, his honor demands he rescue her. Will a romance between them work, or will Beatrice's secret keep them apart.

POSSIBLE SPOILER AHEAD, although you'll discover it in the first 10% of the book. Beatrice's secret is that she rises - as in floats through the air to the top of the room. The fear is that others will think she's a witch, which will ruin her family if anyone finds out. The paranormal part of the book is where I struggled. It's just not my thing. However, the romance is sweet, and it's nice to see a man portrayed as a person who is more interested in character and honor than with what might be wrong with a person.

This book is a triumph!

I am a sucker for a sweet regency romance but often I find them frustratingly inauthentic. I will be reading along with the author’s sincere but weak attempt to write in the setting when I am suddenly thwacked between the eyes with some turn of phrase wholly out of place and time. I am pleased to say such is not the case with Her Caprice. Keira Dominguez’s writing is refreshingly accurate and well researched. I never once felt jolted out of the story by modern details or dialogue. Indeed, I remarked to my mother that given a hardcover with an old appearance and I might have supposed Her Caprice was written by a Regency author.

The story is exciting, the pacing beyond the first few pages is enthralling and I couldn’t put it down. I am eagerly awaiting the next installment from the Amazon delivery truck. If squeaky clean romance is your cup of tea, I highly recommend this read.

To protect her secret, she lived with her parents and sister tucked away in the countryside. But a family trip to London changes everything. Her family thought they could hide her with the most hideous dresses and ugly hats so the ton would ignore her as a girl of no consequence. But one man, a gentleman through and through, a military captain just back from the war, sees behind the awful grooming and is captivated by her smiles and easy camaraderie. And fall in love. With each other. I laughed and I cried as Beatrice and Henry encounter much adversity and a surprising enemy. This is a regency romance worth reading. I loved it!

Since the age of 13, Beatrice’s life has changed as a result of a newly acquired paranormal skill. Her family has been loath to bring her to a season in London, but feel compelled to do so. In order to not attract suitors, her mother has dressed her in ill-fitting and ugly dresses. After her first dance at her first ball, she is left stranded on the ballroom by an oafish Lord. Enter Captain Henry Gracechurch to the rescue, a military man just back from the war (sigh).

This is a fun read, with smart dialogue and engaging characters. I especially loved Henry.❤️❤️ The plot was different from the normal Regency Romance, which made it an interesting read! I loved it that it was a clean read!

I look forward to more books by the author!
