Four teenagers 'borrow' the key for a cottage by the beach to spend a weekend of sun, fun and drinks. But they don't know that the locals keep a scary secret. About something that comes at night. Something that comes with the tide ...
I write stories about the apocalypse so that I don't need to work a real job. I grew up reading Stephen King and still haven't fully recovered. I'm currently ending the world in my new series Under the Breaking Sky.

A group of young adults want to have some good times spending in the beach cottage of one of the parents. The prologue of the story already has forebodings that something evil is going on at this seaside. On the following pages the water is coming nearer and nearer. Why is Chris, a youth and resident from the neighbourhood, trying to put up an anchor over the door? Who manipulated the car and the electronics? After building up enough tension a real creepy story sets in. Will one of the youths survive? Sometimes I had to think about the John Carpenter movie The Fog and reading the description of the sea demons. Overall an interesting teenagers/monsters read with a good composition and straight plot. Okay there are many cliches but the idea of the evil spirits is quite fine. If you want some quick uncanny time and scream of fear I can recommend this novella.
Four teens at a beach house for a few days to swim, talk, a little romance and of course some alcohol. What more could the teens ask for. The first night there's A loud knock on the door late in the evening, should they answer the door? A pounding sound at their door! This starts to change the whole mood of their trip and the girls are very frightened but tomorrow is another day and they can put this night behind them. Really? You must read if you want to know what happens on day two and you won't be let down on what happens on the beach when the tide rolls in.
This was a really creepy and fun short horror story and I'm going to be looking for more books by Nick Clausen!
I definitely recommend this horror book and have given a rating of 4 Creepy Beached 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Stars!!
4 friends + 1 weekend +1 lonely house + 1 hidden secret = evil and mayhem. A child Chris tried to tell them, but they disregarded him completely till disaster struck them.
Nick Clausen has done it again, written an absolute fun, horror short story. The prologue of a lone man's story who had lost his wife to them, those from the sea, captured my imagination completely. I could feel his fear. Then came the story of 4 friends who knew nothing about the horror from the sea which the locals have kept hidden. Disbelief in such tales from the friends was well shown.
In spite of being a short book of 100 pages, the author has given a complete story with varied characters. Disbelief, doubt, suspicion, shock, helplessness and determination all were seen. The friends went through a gamut of these emotions that made this so thrilling. Those from the sea were well described from their looks to smell to their behavior.
The horror of those beings creeping and walking from the sea, those who could change anyone, make them as vile as them were beautifully described. I could feel their primitive brains wanting fresh blood. The way they coordinated their attack filled me with a strange evil thrill. I promise I haven't turned evil.... YET!! But my niggles did also come creeping - I wanted more horror and suspense!!
Overall, an extremely fun read.. And yes, I read this story around midnight. BWAHAHAHA!!
They Come At Night starts with a letter from an unnamed husband addressing the loss of his wife, Elvina. The lost love that he has mourned for exactly a year since she was taken from him by creatures from the sea.
A group of teenagers, Jayden, Sienna, Richard, Max and Spike (the dog) are spending the weekend, without permission and in the off-season at Richard’s parent’s beach cottage. Not long after arriving at the cottage they venture out, walking along the beach, one of the group, Sienna accidentally treads on something sharp, a strangely shaped skeleton which none of them can identify.
On their return from the beach, the group disrupt Chris, a local child attempting to hammer an anchor above their door. Chris catches sight of the group and runs away.
Thinking that it is just the weird behaviour of the locals they put the incident behind them. After all, they are at the cottage to have fun, get drunk, watch scary movies, generally just chilling out and let off some steam. Just teenage kids doing teenage things away from the watchful gaze of their parents.
Unbeknownst to the group of teenagers, the local area harbours a dark and deadly secret and they choose the wrong time to visit. In the daylight hours, everything is normal but at night strange things start happening around the cottage. Scratching noises in the night, knocking on the door, deep gouges in the door, eerie figures glimpsed walking past windows and footprints in the sand leading from the sea, only appearing in the wet sand up to the point where the water has reached and only on the seafront side of the cottage.
As the weekend draws to a close, a storm rolls in, their car won’t start and the group are unable to leave the cottage. They each have no phone signal and as the tide begins to rise, getting ever closer to the cottage the group find themselves at the mercy of what is happening in the area, at the mercy of the creatures from the sea…will any survive?
Clausen does a good job of building up the suspense and the tension in the story. From the teenagers disbelieving that anything is wrong to the realisation that they are in serious danger.
It takes a long time for Clausen to play his hand and show us what the creatures look like. But, it is worth the wait as the creatures (they reminded me of a more baleful and menacing version of Mer-Man from He-Man) are creepy and well described with their actions coordinated and bloodthirsty.
The group of teenagers are all likeable enough and there was no over the top angst or teenage drama from them that made me eye-roll during the book. While there’s not the greatest depth to them (it’s a novella after all) there’s enough to give you a feel for them and their different personalities.
The opening to They Come At Night sets a foreboding and ominous tone for what will follow, it hooked me straight away and made me eager to read the rest of the novella. I felt like I got a complete story from the short page-count, the story is easy to read, page-turning and flows well (as does the writing). There’s a good sense of atmosphere, particularly when the storm comes in on the final night as the story builds to its climax and the creatures are suitably sinister.
There are quite a few clichés along the way in They Come At Night but they are easy to excuse as it is a such a terrific dose of highly entertaining B-movie horror fun in the form of a novella.
They Come At Night, like Human Flesh which is also written by Clausen is a delightfully dark way to spend an hour and get a quick horror fix.
I thought I knew what this story would be about but I we wrong. This quick read is about 4 friends spending the weekend in a beach front cabin. Worse timing ever! I enjoyed this short story from Nick Clausen. I look forward to reading more by him in the future.
There are more than animals in the water, and they want YOU.
How do you protect yourself?
A little mystery and plenty of danger, as the four kids try to survive and make good their escape. I enjoyed this novella, but I was never really scared, just curious.
An ok story, I'm assuming it was YA as it seems to be directed more at that audience. Apparently the first book published by this author and I can see how with some more work on his craft and a bit more editing he will do well.
I read this story right after Clausen’s Dreamland. Four teens in a beach cottage and there’s something scary in the water. No, no fins. Something…different. A local secret. Just put up an anchor by the entrance and hope for the best…or fight the fear that water brings in with high tides. Very straight forward story and plenty entertaining. Dangerously close to YA territory, but can be enjoyed by proper adults also. Clausen’s style naturally has a sort of plainness too it, so it’s difficult to tell whether this is indeed intended as an all audience read or just how he writes. At any rate, the teens were fairly tolerable and worth putting up with for the story itself. I always enjoyed terror beneath the waves sort of tales and sea monsters and all that and this one was fun in its own way. One can only dream of how enjoyable it would be to read it somewhere near the ocean, maybe at night, with the tides rolling in. And just like that…daydreaming. Anyway, back to the book…a definitely fun freebie get and a lightning quick read. Would love to see the author’s writing and his characters along with it mature into more adult appropriate reading fare. Until then…mind the tides.
The Tide is Danish author Nick Clausen's first work, and also his first translated into English. A horror story set in a beachside cottage during the off-season, it had both an immediacy and a strangeness that I found compelling. Quite enjoyable!
Do you ever have one of those odd obsessions? Like, for example, listening to a youtube channel called Mr. Nightmare where they read supposed true horror stories from reddit? Well, I definitely do. I just can't read/listen to those stories at night...or with the lights off...or sometimes alone. Does that make me a wuss? I don't care.
I'd like to give a HUGE thank you to the author once again for letting me read his novella. The story was originally published in Danish in 2009, but now it is available in English. Good thing, cause I can't read Danish.
Four teenagers are at a cottage on the beach, having a good ol' time playing in the water, drinking beer, all the fun stuff to do at the beach cottage. Things start to happen. Such as unknown footprints and scratches on the doors and windows.
By the way, when the dog growls at something, don't ignore the poor pooch. He's trying to warn you.
The description of these 'sea demons' don't come till later, but geez...I can't get the horrified image out of my head. It's like when you see one of those random youtube videos with this distorted image (like the smiling dog, good god!) and now it's engraved into your brain for however long it takes to slowly fade away.
It's a novella so it's not a long read. I sat and finished it in one sitting. I like the simplistic style of the story. I felt kid of bad for Jayden in the beginning and toward the end. So long as nothing happened to the dog. I won't forgive the author if it did. Yes, I am one of those people that can sit and watch something or read something and whatever happens to the humans, I'm always going to ask, 'but the dog is okay, right?'
I rather liked the story and it was pretty creepy. Glad it was still day time when I read it. I can admit when I'm a wuss, don't care. Enjoy a quick read...not in the dark, or with the lights out, or alone. Yeah.
They Come At Night by Nick Clausen is a wonderfully atmospheric and nerve-wracking tale that will make you think twice about staying in a cabin near the ocean.
I snagged this ebook for free after seeing it pop up time and time again in one of my bookish Facebook groups. I am SO glad that I did.
This novella is about a group of teens that head to a cabin on a beach for a weekend getaway. They are expecting to sit around drinking and relaxing, but of course, things don’t go quite as planned…
I just love tales with this premise! I was sucked in immediately and had to force myself to put the book down so I could go do bed and then go to work.
The prologue is scary and very sad. But of course, when we jump into the first chapter, the tone of the timeline we focus on begins in a very happy-go-lucky way. However, it’s not long before that tone begins to darken… And then it’s nothing but action packed and intense!
The building of suspense and tension in the story was so wonderfully done. We began with the typical teenagers that don’t think anything is wrong, even when presented with some solid evidence. Then we eventually move into the scenes where one person begins catching on. And finally we make it to the event where they all finally realize that they are in serious danger.
Like many of my other favorite horror books and movies, it takes a long time before the author shows us what the creatures look like. But that wait is so worth it. When we finally see the creatures in the light, they are terrifying and bloodthirsty!
I LOVED every second of this read!
One more quick note- They Come at Night was originally published in Danish. With the English translation, there were a few instances where the translation was a little odd, but that didn’t take away from the tale!
My Final Thoughts: I had so much fun reading this! This could be a great book to read during a readathon as you will cruise right through it and enjoy every second!
While this one is categorized as YA and there are certainly some cheesy moments, it was so wonderfully done and very suspenseful! This tale really creeped me out and it is definitely one that is going to stick with me for a long time.
After finishing this read, I immediately looked up other works that have been translated into English. I cannot wait to read more from this author!
Two fish walked into a wall. One said to the other, "Dam!"
The old creature feature with teenagers-in-a-cabin scenario. Hasn't that been done to death (so to speak)? Anyway, this one is at least not set in a forest. The cabin is by the sea and apparently the builders were dummies because the tide floods the building for three or four days a year. Bad timing for our hapless teens who just happened to pick that time to bunk down in the cabin. As usual, it's a dark and stormy night, and the scaly, fishy, human thingies that live nearby want to increase their numbers. I won't give any more away, but it isn't really anything new. Think - The Creature from the Black Lagoon
The writing is simple and amateurish, BUT this was the first published work by this author and kudos to him for having a go at writing AND I believe his ratings have improved in the 10 years since he wrote this. The story was too short and the ending felt rushed, but don't let that deter you from having a go at this. It's still capable of sending a few chills down the old vertebrae.
*Note: I received this book for free in exchange for my honest opinion.
THEY COME AT NIGHT is a wicked tale that will leave anyone heading to the beach with the lingering question: what lies beneath the water? The story begins with a group of friends who decide to take a vacation for the weekend at one of their parent's beach cottage's. Everything starts out light and fun until night falls and things begin to take an eerie turn. Someone or something from a local legend is stalking them and it is up to them to heed a local's warning or suffer the fate of the non-believers.
THEY COME AT NIGHT is a refreshing read that will quench any book lovers thirst for horror. I found myself completely engrossed in the story from the get-go. Extremely well written, the descriptions Clausen gave about the unknown assailant painted a vivid image in my mind. Make sure to add this one to your summer reading list.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed on this review are my own.
When four friends take a trip to a cabin for some fun they never expected to get caught in the big secret of the town. The neighbors refuse to talk about it. Except one neighbor kid who tries to warn them, but they don't listen. When the night falls.. they wish they had.
This book was so beyond creepy! Living on an island, I found Clausen's version of, what I would consider, an aquatic take on vampires to be slightly horrifying. The writing was good. For me the story had slow progression but in the creepiest of ways. I found myself waiting for something to jump out of the book at me which kept me continuously creeped out throughout the story.
It's short, it's quick, and it's completely scary. If that is what you're looking for than I strongly recommend this story.

They Come at Night was originally published in Danish, but is now available in English.
A group of teenagers decide to spend a weekend away at one of their parent’s beach cottage without them knowing. Unknowingly to them, they chose the wrong time of year to stay there and ignoring the warnings of a child who tries to protect them, night soon becomes dangerous. As the tide creeps it’s way up to the door, evil follows.
Review: After reading Human Flesh which I really enjoyed, I was excited to be given the opportunity to read They Come at Night. The synopsis didn’t grab my attention as much as Human Flesh, but Nick Clausen is clearly a very talented and imaginative writer therefore I was still as eager to get stuck in, I was definitely intrigued. The tone of the book was down to earth from start to finish and perfect for the book’s intended audience. They Come at Night was straight into the story line, there was no build up which was brilliant due to the book being quite short, it was easy to read and snappy, the author didn’t beat around the bush. I found it quite hard to connect with the characters as I felt they were too young for me, this didn’t put me off the book however as it felt like I was reading a traditional ghost story, the book had a Goosebumps sort of feel to it. They Come at Night didn’t give me the eerie feel that Human Flesh did, however the traditional feel was rather comforting especially as this was read on a rainy day.
This is a great teen horror story with great characters and an awesome storyline! I was captured in the beginning and held to the story to the end - I could not put this down. It is a short story with a great twist.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The characters are portrayed so clearly that you can imagine them and see them doing the things throughout the book. I recommend this book to one and all.

A good, short read about a group of teens staying the weekend at their friend’s parent’s beach house. Thinking they will have a relaxing time & having fun in the sun, their weekend takes a chilling turn as ominous events occur in the middle of the night. Can they figure out what’s happening before “they” come back? Looking forward to reading more from this author.
I was lucky enough to have read Dreamland last month, which is what attracted me to this one. The book follows a group of teens who go to one of their parent's beach houses when they see and hear strange things at night. During the day everything is nice and they are all happily playing, but The book is a really good example of Teen horror, with enough suspense and scares to keep any horror lover entertained. The main part of the story is all about the unseen terror, which makes the horror aspect a lot more intriguing as you have no idea whether it is the locals playing tricks, or something occult out there trying to get them, you also don't know why they are being targeted and no-one else is. Overall this is a brilliant teen horror book, which would make a very good short film.
This short story follows a group of four friends as they spend the weekend at a beach house. When they get there no one else is at the beach and they think they have it made. A storm starts brewing and strange things start happening at night. Over the course of a few days the friends try and make sense of what is happening when they sleep. I really liked this book. It's a quick read with a good plot. My only issue is I wish it were longer!
Despite it being a short book of, the author has given a complete story. Disbelief, doubt, suspicion, shock, helplessness and determination all were seen. Characters went through a gamut of these emotions that made this so thrilling. Those from the sea were well described from their looks to smell to their behavior.
Authur Nick Clausen has the uncanny ability to make everyday, mundane things unbelievably scary! A weekend at the cottage? What could go wrong? Just remember to lock the doors before settling in to read this spine tingler! Cudos, Mr. Clausen!
Nice short horror story. This is a tale about friends who visit a cabin by the ocean only to discover that they lack some necessary information about the area. Once each year, for three days, things become very deadly for those who don't know the proper protection mechanisms.
The first book I read from this author was Human Flesh and I loved it so much that I decided to give this one a chance and I wasn't disappointed. It was a scary, heart pounding story. I recommend it to everyone. I'm really enjoying this author's work♥️
Four friends spend a week at a beach house, enjoying the sun, sea and movies, but something is in the water and it’s coming for them. This book starts with a frightening letter written by a dying man, before the story continues with Jayden, Sienna, Max, Richard and golden retriever, Spike. That’s one of the things I like about Nick Clausen’s books, there is frequently a dog in them. I liked the characters of the four friends, and I found their interaction believable. It’s the sort of vacation I like to go on myself. I could see the beach cottage and the surrounding area clearly. The creatures were suitably threatening, and I read the book quickly to find out exactly what they were.
