Chimera Secrets #2

Guarding the Mermaid

Rate this book
Duty or love? Will a guard make the right choice?

Becky needs a scoop to make her mark in the journalism world and gets her chance when she's hired as a nurse for a top-secret clinic hidden in the Rockies. What she doesn't expect is to become one of the patients and kept prisoner.

The doctors are playing God and have found a way to change people. Change them into something else. In her case, she becomes a mermaid. The only one of her kind and about to be sold to the highest bidder unless she can convince the man guarding her to set her free.

Jett ain't no hero, yet, he finds himself rescuing Becky, over and over. Even starts liking the talkative nurse, which is a bad idea. He knows better than to get involved with a woman. Didn't his daddy teach him love always hurts?

It hurts, alright, especially because he ends up having to make a choice; doing his job or protecting Becky.

Is it even possible for a man to love a mermaid? Might be time to take some scuba diving lessons to find out.

Down the rabbit hole!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💚🖤💙❤️💜
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘📔
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏🌏
Character development: 🧜🏼‍♀️🧜🏼‍♀️🧜🏼‍♀️🧜🏼‍♀️🧜🏼‍♀️
Narrator: 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Solo Narration

The heroine: Becky - a nurse who is ill herself and living on borrowed time, she wanted to become a journalist and studied to become one, since she wanted to spend her last days doing something she loved and leaving a legacy when she was gone. So when she gets a job at the top secret organization called Chimaeram, she knows it is her chance.

The Hero: Jett - a sociopath who joined the military at 18 and was let go because he liked killing a bit too much. When he came home, he got out his aggression by modeling himself after Dexter from TV. When he was nearly caught, he got a job with Chimaeram clinics. He now worked security for the corporation, did a bit of hunting when patients escaped from time to time, and worked as a guard.

The Story: Jett found himself dreaming about Becky more than he though was good, but he couldn’t stop. Becky was sunshine and smiles, while Jett was dark and menacing. After Becky is attacked by a patient, Jett finds her nearly dead and helps her out by calling Doctor Chimera where she learns he has a cure for her lung cancer, though he tells her it isn’t ready for human trials yet.

Like the first book in the series, this book was told in dual points of view via solo narration. The narrator was Troy Duran who is very good. He has a deep sexy voice which lends itself to romance audiobooks very well and he has a very different voice for the females. I really like him as a narrator.

This book was completely different than the first book and showed a lot more detail about the things going on at the Chimaeram clinic. Dr. Chimera asked Becky to help him with his research, which not only showed some of the things he is working on, but also some of the morally corrupt practices going on. Granted much of the work is to benefit humanity and cure illness, but some of the work is funded by the military to create super soldiers.

Also, though the patients all volunteer or agree to be treated in order to save their lives from terrible wounds or diseases and they know that the treatments may have side effects, they are not told what kind of side effects, they know that death might be one, but they are dying anyway, they don’t know that they may be turned into monsters.

Like the first book, I liked how the romance between Becky and Jett grew slowly and these two had a bunch of chemistry before they got together. I liked how Jett was morally grey about killing and doesn’t care about the things that go on at the clinic but he starts to have feelings for Becky and cares about the fact that she is dying. The story in this book was even better than the last book. I can’t wait to listen to the rest.

Guarding the Mermaid by Eve Langlais

Chimera Secrets Book 2. Paranormal romance. Can be read on its own but strongly suggest reading book 1, A Nurse For The Wolfman beforehand for the full story background and overarching storyline.

Becky is a nurse and with aspirations to be a journalist. She also has cancer which is why she takes a job at a secret clinic. Maybe she can find something to write about. Maybe she can find something to help her live.
Thanks to an evil scientist, she finds secrets, lungs that breathe water and a love for her bodyguard Jett.

A bit dark but I still found a few laugh out loud moments as usual with this author. It was great to read Becky’s story after meeting her in the first book. A lot of the time frame overlaps between book 1 and 2. Jett intrigued me the most. He’s dark and brooding. He has no trouble killing experiments gone wrong but there has to be something redeeming about him, right? Becky’s teasing him is amusing.

Not necessarily a cliffhanger, but the epilogue of course, introduces upcoming evil and problems.

If I could only recommend one book this month, Guarding the Mermaid would be it. I loved it, and I’ll confess I was predisposed to dislike this book.

Mermaids are not my thing. I see “mermaids,” and I’m not interested. Becky, the heroine, came across as dingaling in book 1 (A Nurse for the Wolfman). I didn’t like her in the previous book. Hero Jett is the kind of alpha-hole you find in dark romance. Definitely not my thing. But those elements put together in this story—Wow!

Becky is no dingaling. She’s a nurse in search of a scoop that will allow her to become an investigative reporter (somebody should have told her there’s more money in nursing than in journalism). But the clock is ticking. She’s terminally ill. After she’s attacked by a strange patient at the hospital where she works, she’s offered a job at remote, top-secret medical clinic. She figures out something fishy is going on, and the clinic and its brilliant Dr. Chimera might be her big break.

While Becky is suspicious of the doctor and his experiments; he’s suspicious of her, and orders his henchman Jett to key an eye on her and eliminate her if she becomes a problem. Jett is an amoral enforcer with no compunction about killing somebody if the job calls for it.

But despite himself, he begins to care for Becky. However, as her terminal illness progresses, she wonders if one of Dr. Chimera’s experiments might offer her a miracle cure. However, those experiments come with huge risk—a horrific, painful death or something much, much worse.
How far will she go to try to save her life? How far will Jett go?

Guarding the mermaid offers a tantalizing concoction of medical sci-fi, paranormal, dark romance, and a touch of horror that makes for a page-turning, compelling read. Highly recommend.

This was a wonderful pairing! These two were similar, yet opposite. They played off each other nicely and where one was cautious, the other bold, and vice versa. They also had a good banter that lead to steamier times, several of them, and one extremely hot water scene! Their feelings evolved, even catching them off guard, and while their HEA is secure, their story seems to be ‘just for now’ finished and I expect we’ll see more of them in the series 😊

Right Choice!!!

Becky Frederickson was looking for her next big story to make her mark as a journalist and she got it when she was hired as a nurse at a secret clinic in the Rockies. What she didn't expect was for her life to change drastically.

Jett was working at Chimaeram Clinic as a security guard who knew more than the others guards what was going on. He kept finding himself rescuing the very intriguing nurse, Becky. He knew he shouldn't fall for her but his heart had a mind of its own.

The doctors at the clinic were playing God with people's lives. They were changing patients into supernatural beings. Becky was on borrowed time so she did something she shouldn't have done.

She experienced on herself and became a mermaid. When Mr Chimera found out, he held against her will and was going to auction her off to the highest bidder. Her only salvation was her guard and the man she loved, Jett.

The latter wanted nothing more than to safe her, even if it was the last thing he ever did. And he did just that when he stood up against his boss for the woman who'd captured his heart.

Becky and Jett got their HEA even though they had to make some compromises.

GUARDIAN THE MERMAID is the second book in Eve Langlais' CHIMERA SECRETS series. It was heartwarming, fast-paced and intriguing. This series keeps getting better and better with each book. Marvelous job by Eve Langlais! 5++++

So another interesting book from this author - well written. You really should read the first one in the series if possible as it sets up the back-story, but it's probably not really necessary as this is a pretty self contained story in itself. The H/h from book one do not feature and are mentioned briefly at the end - no spoilers are included for that book apart from the outcome - it is a romance after all.

Becky is a bubbly nurse charmed into working at this isolated clinic that treats 'so called' trauma and coma patients. Jett is the bad-ass guard/come ruthless killer, tasked with keeping the 'subjects' under control. I really liked their romance - slow burn for a while as Jett is not relationship friendly, then it gets really steamy later, but the main focus is the intriguing paranormal story. Becky has her own secrets and everything gets interesting when she decides to take her treatment into her own hands. Very different and be warned, the story is on going and while there is a sort of HEA, I really want to know what happens next.

Ps...I just finished reading for the second time October 9th 2022. This time I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was excellent! 😍

AN INTERESTING CONCEPT TO BE SURE, it's sort of like Pulp Fiction meets Sci-Fi vibes. This would have made an interesting movies, because I'm not a fan of reading thriller/horror/action/mystery crime. I prefer to watch them.

Don't know if it's the book cover, but it gave me the feels of 'the Monster Under the Lake' kind of feeling if it makes any sense.

JETT works for Dr. Chimera, and he's the enforcer who gets rid of those who needed to die or knew too much. He's basically shut off his emotions and such, except for the first time a woman made him question his own actions and the 'good' doctor he works for. Jett isnt' that good of a man, unless he loves you because while he falls for Becky, he's still capable of killing those who are deemed a threat to her. Jett first encountered Becky because one of the their test subjects escaped and found a way to the hospital she's working at. That puts Becky under his radar because she might blab and he'd have to kill her. Circumstances happen and Becky gets hired to work as a nurse for the Chimera's clinic and she almost got killed by a berserker test subject and thus, they discovered that she's got cancer and has less than a year to live. With a crushed throat and failing lungs, there isn't much for Becky to live for, making Jett realise that he might love her more than he ever had anyone.

BECKY pulled the short end of the stick when she's stuck in a deadbeat job of a no life nurse and the fact that she's dying of cancer. Her interests lies in being a journalist and when the chance came in the form an odd patient who nearly killed her, she somehow got hired by Dr.Chimera and decided this might be a good chance for a big scoop, until she almost got herself killed the second time and then had to be saved by Dr.Chimera's x-rated drugs. While Becky heals, she also falls in love with Jett. Their relationship was more down to Earth. I can't say I enjoyed it to the fullest, it was just quite tame and all, the mystery of the story focused more on the Chimera Secrets. Becky eventually turns into a mermaid (sadly no tail) and at least got cured of cancer.

OVERALL it was okay, perhaps just not my kind of story since there are plenty of raving reviews for this. I liked the mermaid idea but it didn't play a huge role in the characters' development or relationship building until later. Becky's also not my kind of heroine, and I think this might be Eve Langlais's first book FOR ME that I found different. Good or Bad? That's for you to decide based on your personal preference. My guess is, if you enjoy a mystery or thriller, this might be perfect for you.

So I expected more ‘guarding’ of the mermaid... but turns out he only guards a mermaid at like 83% because the vast majority of this book she’s still completely human. There is a scene of them having sex with her as a mermaid... but honestly not what I expected from the title and the cover. Even the chapter pictures in the book, it was a mermaid with a tail & she doesn’t even have a tail in the book?

Overall I can’t give more than a 3 because I felt bamboozled into thinking this was a mermaid romance when it wasn’t, AND there’s a huge chunk of this (again I think it was at least 50%) that was basically a rehash of the time in book one? Yes, it’s a different couples perspective, but I don’t need to rehash all those convos again and see stuff I’ve seen I personally prefer it to continue in time not revert back.

Also I hate how good Eve is at the last page of all her books. Even when I find them just an OK read, the last page ALWAYS hooks me into the concept of the next book, and more often than not, even when I think I’ll love it, I really don’t but I continue to get suckered into another book lol.

Book two gives us Becky’s story. Becky dreams of becoming a groundbreaking journalist – she just needs a kickass story to start her career. Until then, she’ll continue nursing and caring for others. When an opportunity to join the nursing team at a top-secret facility arises, she jumps at the chance. There must be something super-secret there she can write about?

Jett is a guard at the Chimaeram Clinic, with no place in his life for pesky things like feelings. He does his job. He’s a company man, and loyal to Dr. Chimera. He knows about the experiments going on there, and it does not faze him. When Becky enters the facility, he keeps finding himself rescuing the beautiful redhead from multiple dangerous situations. Her teasing and flirting wear him down, and he starts to become (gasp) fond of her!

A cure for Becky’s illness turns her into a Mermaid, Jett has to decide whether to toe the company line, or again rescue the nurse he loves. Will love triumph? Will he need to take up scuba diving?

5/5 - The series just gets better!

Jett x Becky are so good together.

Becky has lung cancer. She took a job at a mysterious medical clinic to sleuth out a story. She's a nurse but her passion is journalism. She wants to figure out what is going on behind the walls of this off the grid research / medical center but before she can make much headway her health declines. And, Dr. Chimera, a real-life mad scientist taunts her with a possible lifesaving serum.

Jett. Oh man, what a grumpy and sexy guard. He is the most trusted of Chimera’s security but once Becky gets under his skin he starts breaking protocol. As their relationship deepens, Becky’s life fades. A desperate decision made by her turns her into a hybrid mermaid.

Seriously sexy and funny PNR! Steamy for days. And once again the epilogue leaves you panting for the next book. The reader also gets a quick update on Luke and Margaret. And the set up for the Lionman!

FYI:

No mermaid with tail sex but a seriously steamy water sex scene...

I’m in love with the Chimera Secrets series from Eve Langlais. I love reading romance, rooting for two people to be together and find their happily ever after. I also love creepy horror monsters. She blends both of these things together so perfectly in this series!

In this second installment, we focus on Becky Frederickson, whom we met in the first book. We saw her get surly and rude to her friend Meredith, and in this book we find out why. Becky has a lot going on, and even more after one of her coma patients wakes up and attacks her. Luckily, the mercenary guard, Jett, always seems to be there when she needs saving, and the two of them form an unlikely bond, that sees them through Becky’s transformation into a mermaid! I love the resolution to this book, and can’t wait to see where Langlais takes us in the next one!

I admit it, I have a thing for evil scientists and their experiments. So of course I was going to make a reading this series a MUST read. The first book didn't disappoint, but this one was a little slow to start for me. (I admit it as much as I like evil scientists I dislike reporters looking for a scoop- they are often so shallow and self centered!)

That said, I kept at it partly simply because I pictured Dwayne Johnson (and his raised eyebrow) as the hero Jett. Once the story got going though it really sucked me in. I loved Jett and Becky's story; sympathized with her situation; and loved the solution they chose for their life.

Now the LONG (two week) wait for the next in this fun series.

Splish Splash do mermaids need a bath?

I absolutely adore this series. This is Jett and Becky's story. Becky is a nurse and she sees something she shouldn't one night in the E.R room. So Chimera figured it can kill two birds with one stone they recruit Becky as a nurse for the clinic. Jett is a hardcore killer, and he's darn good at his job. When the cute redhead starts flirting with him he doesn't want to get close in case he has to kill her one day. Can Becky break the walls around his cold heart before it's to late? Will Jett give up everything to keep his red headed mermaid?

So I decided to follow A Nurse for the Wolfman with Guarding the Mermaid. It was also an enjoyable read. I was expecting more "mermaid time" but I think the author made the right choice in terms of story and relationship development. The timeline of this one was somewhat concurrent with A Nurse for the Wolfman and it was interesting seeing the same events from different perspectives. Once again, Dr. Chimera knows more than we think and I am curious where the story will go next.

We'll give it 3 and a half stars

The h is dying, a nurse, and aspires to be a journalist. She's injured by one of the ah...experiments... and becomes one herself, only Chimera is a lot more subtle about it with her. In the meantime...

The H is a cold blooded sort who, until the h starts pestering him, has feelings for nobody. He's...bothered...to discover her illness.

There were things that bothered me I guess - how does one go from being a conscienceless killer to being somewhat saddened at having to put an experiment down? And then there are the secret labs within a secret lab bit. Why bother?

Fishy business

The second Chimera book interweaves with the first, as we find out why Becky was looking so ill and confirm Margaret’s concern for her.
In this book, she’s got her own personal guard, Jett, assigned to watch her as she works in the lab with Dr Chimera.
Becky is more ill than anyone realises, which affects Jett in a major way, as he’s starting to care for her.
This book continues the overall Dr Frankenstein story arc, whilst dropping hints about the other hybrids out there.
Sexy, fun and enjoyable

Ms. Langlais never fails to intrigue me with her stories. I have now read all five of the Chimera Secrets and I applaud her. These stories should be in one compilation and I know I would buy it. This doctor only wants to help and his patients are in need but some of the results along with the side affects are a bit daunting shall we say? But everything works out well in the end even for the intriguing Doctor Chimera. After reading the first book about a lion man I simply had to keep reading and didn't finish until I was read about the unicorn..Fabulous!!

I’d give 10 stars if I could!

Ahhh! I completely loved every single moment in this story! It was so sad at times, feeling like there could be no possible happy ending. Other times, the hope and possibilities were nearly overwhelming. Jett is such a dark character, seemingly unredeemable, while Becky is so bubbly and cheerful, all while hiding a secret. Together, they’re hot and sexy, explosive and tempestuous... I’m dying for the next story!

Another Hit Series

Eve Langlais has another hit with the Chimera Series. We met Becky in the first book. This book explains why Becky is so interested in the Clinic. How the vivacious Auburn haired nurse changed so quickly. And her interest in the head of security. She answers more questions with this book but one. What is at the bottom of the lake?

Mermaid

Wow! Eve Langlais has the craziest and most amazing imagination I have ever seen. This next book in the Chimera Secrets series continues with nurse Becky, who is dying of cancer, but enjoys taunting the scowling guard, Jett, who has had to save her life a few times from those patients she is tasked to care for. Love it!

Firm but compassionate man...sooo HOT!! Love how she tames him soo easily when she wants something😉

When i read the 1st book in this series, i was not sure, i wanted to continue to the next book because it felt like the movie ...The Island of Dr Moreau. But Becky's infectious eagerness and understanding, had me give the series another chance. 🤗

This is the second book in the series and it follows Becky, working as a nurse at the facility and struggling to find a cure for her lung cancer. The more she uncovers at the facility the more Becky is convinced that Dr. Chimaera has a cure for what ails her. But what she doesn’t expect is the after affects of taking such a drug.
