Unstoppable Liv Beaufont #1

The Rebellious Sister

Rate this book

Olivia Beaufont likes fixing things and keeping to herself. She’s simple like that—but her life is about to drastically change.

Liv is a rebel with royal blood who abdicated her birthright. A string of murders changes everything and the House of Seven asks her to take on a role as a Warrior, one of seven positions revered for protecting magic.

Although Liv would rather stay out of the politics and conspiracies that she ran away from years ago, her family needs her. It’s only a twelve-year stint until her sister, the next in line, can take over.

So, what’s the harm in activating her magic and accepting her place as a warrior?

Everything.

Justice hasn’t been properly served by the House of Seven in a long time.

Not until now.

For a book none of my friends have read or even have had shown up on their radars, this was pretty good!

And the COVERS!
Oh, Lord! I would get this series just to decorate my shelf, they're so badass!!

I'm a little on the shelf about whether I wanna continue the series or not though. Mostly I can't think of anything that was not okay.

It all worked.

The writing flowed.

There were elements of humour.

The cat talked.

The characters weren't tstl.

We have a friendly giant and an evil House of Seven
(Come On! With a name like that how could they NOT be evil??)

The cat talked.

The Rebellious Sister is centred around Olivia "Liv" Beaufont who abdicates her place in The House after her parents are killed and no one believes her that there was foul play involved. So she gets her magic sealed and for the next five years lives amongst the muggles and other magical creatures where she met her talking cat Lynx, Plato.

Shit goes down and a series of deaths later, she is invited back into the House folds to take up her place as Warrior (Every house has two seats, the odd member of the family is the Councilor and the even numbered is the Warrior)
Now obviously she would rather be doing anything else. Anything else. But her family needs her and all their issues aside, Familia Est Sempiternum, Family is Forever.

So Liv dives back into the lies and deceit and the world of the power hungry but only until her youngest sister comes of age and can take her place.

There's a lot of bureaucracy and red-tapism and not asking questions and blindly following orders involved and you can bet your ass it all chafes our h mighty hard xD

Now not to be rude to the genre cause I'm definitely a fan but this piece of Urban Fantasy is classified as a YA and I think that explains my reluctance to keep reading. It all feels so clean and Good Always Wins for a UF with none of the bloody, gritty elements to balance it out. . .

Let's see what happens, maybe I'll continue, maybe I won't.
But let's face it, it's always won't.

In this story we have our h, Liv, who has worked at a small repair shop with her grumpy but sweet older boss and her talking 'cat' Plato for the last 5 years. Things are slow going but comfortable for Liv until her older brother shows up out of nowhere asking for her help.

What does he want after turning his back on her when their parents died and she was forced out of their society? Well, he wants her to come back and take her rightful place as a Warrior for the House of Seven (a pretty shady magical institution that might have a hand in her families mysterious deaths) and informs her that her two older siblings were killed as well making her the only option to take up the mantel.

Knowing she has to accept the position to keep the Beaufont family from being ousted from the ruling council she agrees- but only if she does things on her terms. That includes going to her new friend Rory (a giant) for magical training, and asking questions about the Councils decisions at every turn.

Can she survive learning to control her new powers, training to be a Warrior, taking on cases, and keeping the House of Seven at bay all while trying to unravel the mystery of what happened to her family?

x-------------------------------------------x

So review out of the way- I was a little annoyed at Liv's character. She claims she's so different from the other magicians- but honestly she's pretty judgy when it comes to a lot of the supernatural creatures too. Like starting fights with the gnomes & insulting them, calling the faries ugly, and just acting above it all (while at the same time pointing at the seven and calling them elitist)

Also, how can she get her magic back but not know how to use it? If they lifted the ban for magic wouldn't she get her memories back too? I mean she left when she was 18, and even though said her parents did more organic teaching and she stayed away from magic she did go to school- she had to at least know the basic for the wizarding world right?

Liv just seem confused about normal wizard society stuff too...like she was mind wiped. It was a little weird.

I don’t understand all these high ratings.

Sure, Liv’s stance on non-human rights and the Seven’s biased laws is admirable. It’s also halfhearted and uninformed. She knows almost nothing about the magical world, and her own actions frequently contradict her “beliefs”.

It looks like she should have the potential to be special. She has a strangely strong magic, she uses magic naturally in a way other magicians can’t, and she roots for the underdog which usually becomes some type of advantage. But she’s not that special.

She’s also just… dumb. And incompetent. I know she just got her magic back, and she has no investigative/combat training. Still. She fumbles around, insulting without cause and achieving nothing. How could she possibly think that the starting a fight with the gnomes was a good idea?

I guess I’m more used to the Kate Daniels’ of urban fantasy. Tight, focused plot with a competent protagonist who kicks ass and takes names. This one is just not for me.

Liv does reminds me of tinker bell somehow, though that was a bit random.

So why should you read this awesome book? Here is why:
1. Liv, the heroine is funny and have a super cute annoying mysterious cat, ups I mean lynx. So cat lover what are you waiting for?
2. Full of unsolved mystery with charming creatures of magic. What's urban fantasy book that didn't have this touch of mystery now days? But still who doesn't love it?
3. The romance is something I am not sure of yet where this is heading. I don't know if I wanted Liv to end up with Rory or not, but let's just enjoy the ride.

Overall this was a delight reading this book, even if there's some minor complain (for examples: the world building about how tech mixed with magic, the villain's and plato's background history maybe will be explored more in next book). However it will not stop me from reading the next book!!

This was an amazing book! I loved Liv, the main character, along with John, Rory, Clark, and Sophia. They were all great. The urban fantasy aspects of the book were well done: fast paced, exciting, action packed, magic packed, and a variety of magical species. It was pretty epic, and I have finished book two at the time of writing this review. I will definitely be continuing with this incredible series. Liv is kick ass and hilarious! 5 stars.

I didn't like this as much on the reread. The writing is occasionally choppy, and the story could have used another line edit. While Liv and Plato are still fun, and the world is intriguing, since I do remember what happens in the series as a whole, the mystery aspect falls flat. 3.5 stars.

I wanted to like this so much because of the premise but the story just wasn’t good. The main character is stupid and unlikable, the villain is obvious, the side characters are flat and forgettable. I was at 43% and considered stopping because it felt like the story hadn’t started yet. Seriously boring.

There’s a supporting character who is a giant that the MC is barely civilized to and yet we see his POV sometimes and he’s super supportive of her, thinks she’s awesome and must be helped? Why tho? Nothing this chick has done warrants that kind of support and tbh she’s rude af half the time.

The whole world setup is kind of whack and vague with no supporting details. “Oh, go take care of this unregistered magician problem in such and such country, tra la!” Non magical people apparently don’t know about magicians but for real this reads like even magicians don’t know about themselves bc wtf is the point of magic here? And this group of seven are supposed to “protect” magic. From...who?

Anyway meh. Got through the book with a bunch of skimming. This author team is probably just not meant for me based on the rambling narcissistic mess of author notes in the back of the book. I might skip to the most recent installment and see if the MC still sucks because I did like the cat sidekick.

Meh.

Honestly, I just ... I found Liv to be an utter asshole. And it's too bad, because I like this world and I'm curious about the overall mystery.

I thought maybe she'd get better - learn and grow - through the book, but she doesn't. She's a dick to other magical creatures, at all times, while pretending she's so unhappy with how the councillors treat them. She's always got snazzy comments directed at the ruling councillors ... but she expresses them in her head, only. To everyone's face, she rolls over and does what she's told.

And in the end she's that same person - still an asshole to those who have no power (magical creatures, like the "ugly fairies" or the gnomes), while being a doormat to those who do. Plus, she's stupid - I don't know how she failed to see that the bad guy was working with at least one councillor, because the fact of it pretty much punched her in the face. Literally.

Pass.

It wasn't a totally bad read, there were several occasions when I actually enjoyed the book, but I also found myself thinking I know what is going to happen next and I really hope the author is going to think of something less formulaic. Unfortunately she didn't and added to this were just so many inconsistencies in the story.
For example, Liv is incapable of controlling her magic because she has had no training, but she only had her magic locked away for five years. I can’t believe none of her family gave her any instruction before then, her much younger eight-year-old sister seemed very capable. Even worse she seems to know nothing about the magical world!

It didn’t help that many of the characters are really caricatures, with the council being more laughable, than the intimidating I suspect they were meant to be.
Finally there was Plato, I can only presume the author intend him to be enigmatic rather than just irritating.
I debated whether to give just one star, but I have given the book the benefit of the doubt.

A dark act sets the scene

The story starts with a dark act, and we are thrown into a world of magic along with Liv. It’s fascinating the way that the magical has been merged with the mundane: a hidden world in plain sight, so to speak.

Liv is a strong-willed, sassy, opinionated woman who won’t be pushed around by anyone. An amazing role model 😁

This looks to be a wild ride, so buckle up and hold on!

Beautiful

There's nothing I like better than an old story told in a new way. This delivers that in spades. The magic is awesome and the main character is a spitfire

Wow. This book ticked all my boxes. It was funny, angst and it's got a kick ass woman. I love it when people try to fight against a corrupt system. I enjoyed all the supernatural parts of this story were great and I really enjoyed the story line. Pluto is amazing and so is Sophia. Rory seems like a gentle giant who I'd love to read more about. Clark is on the bench I don't which side he is and his motives.

Not my particular type of genre, but a very good book for the first in its series

The product page says this book is for teens and young adults which I am neither. But I enjoyed the characters tremendously, the humor in the book had me laughing out loud. Even though this book was a first in a series and a world building book it was not as slow as I usually find those books to be. I will read the next book to see how the protagonist develops her powers or increases them. I found this book most enjoyable and I think others will as well.

A fun new series!

Liv is a kick ass character with just enough back story to make sense of the plot but not too many pages of past to slog through. Looking forward to seeing how she develops... and whose ass she kicks along the way!

Great book. Loved it.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a refreshing new world similar to ours, but oh so different.

I really enjoy the main character with all her flaws and realism it’s a great read.

Can’t wait to read more in this world.

3 Why Are All Magicians A-Holes Stars

The Rebellious Sister is the first book in the Unstoppable Liv Beaufont series by writer duo Sarah Noffke and Michael Anderle.

Cue never-ending rage screaming. Seriously, the amount of characters in this book who pissed me off with their stupidly pig headed ways outweighs the precisely five that didn’t. I hate the election process for filling the Warrior and Councilor spots of the House of Seven. Or rather, the fact that having no training or morality doesn’t eliminate you from a spot on this “elite” council being yours.

Adler is the WORST. It is not at all shocking that he will be the villain. He’s small time right now, but I swear on all that is holy he’s going to show his malevolent colors eventually. The only problem with that is I don’t think I can continue on with this series right now. It’s not just the cringeworthy level of blind faith and ignorance displayed by the majority of the cast. There’s also the grammatical errors. My favorite by far would have to be “Ian nodded”. Ya know, at the end of the book, during a discussion that Ian is not in, BECAUSE HE’S BEEN DEAD SINCE THE THIRD PAGE.

While I do love some characters; such as Rory, Sophia, Stefan, John, and Plato. It’s not enough to make me slug through the next book. I have serious doubts about going anywhere worthwhile at this point. I’ve seen how many books there are in the series, and it would honestly have made more sense to pack three into the same book and separate them into separate parts. They’re all so short!

I just can’t see myself dedicating any more time atm to this series without endangering those around me when my level of frustration and anger is likely to continuously abound .

4 But First It Must Be Discovered Stars

Honestly, I can see the instances that would surely have annoyed me during the previous read. However, I've truly come to appreciate the relationship that Rory and her are building. Especially when one considers the bridge they are building between Magicians and other magical beings.

Then there's the adorable Sophia, whom I am beyond excited to watch, grow, and discover more of throughout this series. She is already so precious in my heart, and I only want good things for her. This makes me judge Clark all the more harshly because he seems to be neglecting her caregiving. Even if she unbelievably mature for age, my heart hurts for how alone she is.

It's obvious Adler and DeCar are the culprits behind the state of the Councilors' response to everything and that they were the hidden masterminds behind Valentino gathering energy through ghosts, and it later disappearing from evidence.

DNF @ Ch 35. First off, this novel is slower than molasses. 35 chapters in and i am yawning. Second, I am so done with stupid characters who aren’t the least bit curious about themselves or who don’t stand up for themselves. This is an overused trope. You don’t save the world by fumbing around in the dark. I’m all for balance, but if you have magical powers that have just been unlocked and you have to do the will of councilors you don’t trust, you might want to find out all you can about yourself and who you’re working for. Especially if they’re telling you to KILL people. I mean, seriously, does she ASK for the written laws?? Nope. Does she ask her bro what they are? Nope. She doesn’t even have a real “come to Jesus” talk with her brother about HIS role on what she’s doing. What is HIS experience? What does HE do all day? Seriously. Take a week’s vacation from the regular job and Figure. It. Out. Also, maybe TAKE A FREAKING PHOTO WHEN YOU SEE EVIL PEOPLE DOING EVIL THINGS. 🙄🙄🙄 Book 1 is about the Rebellious Sister but she’s not “rebellious.” She doesn’t have enough knowledge to rebel. She is bratty, like a 13 y/o who acts like she knows everything when it is obvious to EVERYONE that she knows NOTHING. Also, who is her sister’s guardian? Does she have so little love for her sister that she doesn’t care who is CARING for her??? i’m done with this annoying character and the holes in this glacially slow-moving plotline.

Another reason to read

Love just reacts to what's wrong and unacceptable in her eyes. She is not wrong with a strong heart and acceptance of what's needs to be done. She struggles on in spite of the house of the seven.

I really enjoyed this - it's always a bit of a challenge trying to introduce a world of magic, where the characters know how stuff works, but the reader doesn't.

But Liv Beaufont has been out of the loop for a while, and so it just feels natural to discover whilst she rediscovers.

The premise is that there's a... sort of guild, that controls magic. And the House of Seven is seven families - which include some Warriors who are sent off to 'deal with' things that the council feels is important or necessary.

Liv was never a part of that, except an unfortunate occurrence has drawn her back in - at a point where she knows almost nothing of what's going on, and has next to no experience. But that isn't always a downside, because new eyes can see what tradition has concealed.

The (and the subsequent 3 books - I'm going to be getting the 4th when it's available) had me reading back to back, sneaking a few pages during breaks and lunchtime. So I recommend it as really very enjoyable.

Great book

This is a great start to a new series. I wish it was a little longer though. Also, hopefully in the next book Liv’s allies are a little nicer and tell her what’s going on instead of holding things back that could get her killed.

I have already bought the next book.

Sarah Noffke never lets me down. Her quick subtle humor is always perfectly installed into every thing she writes and this book is no exception. The heroine is quick witted, spunky, good hearted and everything cool I wish I was. This book lacks nothing. Trolls, funny weird little fairy things, magic, gnomes, snooty council members and cute little sisters. This book ended to quickly and I read at a slow pace to absorb all it's fun. I laughed out loud at work more than once on my breaks and would take pictures of pages to send to my husband to share those especially funny moments like Plato having worms because he ate out of trashcans and licked his butt! I hope everyone reads and enjoys this as much as I did. Now to figure out what to read while waiting for book 2. So many choices, but at the moment I just need to know what happens next to Liv and see if a love story may pop up soon!

Rebel With A Cause

Liv is pressed into service as a magical warrior, as more of her family are killed. As a free spirit, she is not content to follow orders without question. Much to the consternation of the leaders. Giants, fairies, lynxes and other magical creatures abound. The House of Seven polices them, but why does it seem that not enough consideration is given to guilt or innocence? I look forward to the next book.

The Rebellious Sister is wonderfully written, has amazing characters, and instantly drags you into a world of Magicians, crazy Magic, Giants, Ogres, Goblins, trolls, and a veritable host of magical creatures.

The hero of this series, Olivia Beaufont, 'Call me Liv', is a rebellious younger sister in a family steeped in millennia-old traditions of service to the magical world, where seven families partnered together to protect magic, and all it stands for.

But, after her parents both die in suspicious circumstances, and nobody will take her seriously about wanting to investigate it, Liv is determined to live her life her own way, rather than in the stifling halls of the magicians House.

She asks for her magic to be locked, and leaves to create a life in the normal world, and is immediately joined by a cat, called Plato, who becomes her constant companion.

But, five years after her parents' deaths, she is informed that her eldest brother and sister have also died, so it's now up to herself, and her surviving brother, Clark, to continue their family's service.

Unfortunately, Liv still doesn't get on with the other six family heads, and is reluctant to trust any of them, but she meets her younger sister, eight year old Sophie, and realises just how much they need each other, and so she and Clark vow their service to the protection of magic, although Liv insists that she is going to stay in her own home.

What happens next, makes her determined to get at the truth about her parents' and siblings' deaths, and so her adventures into the world of magic, and mayhem, begins!

I am soooo glad that I chose to start my non-KU reading with this series!

I'd read the other, KU, series that Sarah Noffke had co-written with Michael Anderle, anod so, when I started buying non-KU books by the same authors, I bought everything I could that Sarah had written, because I thoroughly enjoyed her style of writing.

I've not been disappointed!

I'm really glad that I'll be able to continue on to book two of this series: The Uncooperative Warrior, as I really wanted to just keep on reading, when I reached the end of this one!

I bought the whole series together, but I'll be reviewing each book separately, as I like to give every book the attention it deserves! 🤣

Liv Beaufont is making her own way after leaving her family and abdicating her magic, unhappy with the how the magicians handled her parents' untimely deaths. She unexpectedly gets pulled back needing to represent her family as a warrior but she only agrees on her own terms, trying to stay separate from the status quo and make change from within. She is definitely an agent of change. Very fun series as Liv takes on warrior cases, meeting many magical creatures while investigating the bigger problems and learning more about herself and magic.
