When the end arrives, how far will you go to save the ones you love? The Critically Acclaimed Darkness Rising Series, Now in One Complete Edition! Darkness Rising is an epic survival/thriller post-apocalyptic series that asks the "what if" question that lurks in the back of everyone's mind. When a terrorist plot results in the detonation of several nuclear devices across the West Coast, the Frasers are thrown into disarray and their strained familial relationships are tested as they watch society collapse around them. Tens of millions of people are killed, injured and driven away from their homes as the result of a sinister plot that the government and its citizens are struggling to understand. With their older daughter lost in the chaos, the Frasers must somehow pull together to support each other and fight to reunite their family. Darkness Rising is a thrilling post-apocalyptic series that follows the survivors of a massive terrorist attack that isn't quite what it seems. As you learn more about the Fraser family and a few brave government agents who are attempting to unravel the horror and mystery behind the attacks, you'll soon discover that not everything in the apocalypse is as it appears to be. Written as a collaboration between Justin Bell and #1 bestselling post-apocalyptic author Mike Kraus, Darkness Rising is a gripping, unique and timely take on the post-apocalyptic genre, and is one that will leave you breathless with every turn of the page. This complete edition of Darkness Rising features all six books in the series, each one full of action, suspense and drama as the Fraser family struggles to survive the end of days.
The story flows well and is a okay read, but the authors need to clean up the details which I really hate. Examples: several times they speak of putting the safety in a Glock pistol a Block does not have a safety other than one integral to the trigger; a speed loader does not stay in a revolver, it only holds bullets to be dropped into the cylinder quickly, thus a speed loader; a tool set to make things used a die not a dye. Dye is for coloring. Please clean up your stories. Also it's knelt, not kneeled. Shown not shined. To get 5 stars, pay attention to the details. Again good story.
Well, I finally made it through the six books in the series and continued to see new characters come and go throughout. The premise was plausible: North Korea invades the U.S. through the use of militias from around the country; the primary leader being the father/grandfather of the family that's trying to find him and a daughter.
Nuclear bombs explode on the west coast and in Texas, killing millions of citizens and sending populations east where they will be free of radioactive fallout. However, armed forces are blocking access to the east near St. Louis and killing those who try to break through. It is sometimes difficult to determine who is good and who is bad as the Koreans have infiltrated the government itself and it isn't clear how high of a level it goes.
I did struggle through many sections that seemed to drag on without any action. I was also dismayed by the number of typos and grammatical errors encountered throughout. In the first 3 books, one of the suspect companies was a referenced tool & dye company all along...then suddenly in book 4, "die" is correctly spelled. Glock pistols do not have external safeties, at times, characters were misidentified in the same scene a few pages later, and the author spent too much emphasis on weapon nomenclature that wasn't necessary.
For the most part, "Dark Rising Box set" kept my interest...I was worried during the last 5% of the book as it appeared rushed as compared to the rest of the series...as if it would end in a cliffhanger and another sequel was forthcoming. Too much happened in a short amount of time. I'm still in awe how this rag-tagged group of family members, without any military training, managed to survive all the skirmishes with the ex-military militia and escape by killing everyone.
A good read! The authors should seriously think about hiring an editor to make corrections in order to become a great read.
This is by far one of the best series I’ve read this far. This is a must read and will be looking at what these authors write next. I’m not one for starting a series until it’s done mainly because I don’t like to wait lol. I’ve noticed how quick these authors write books and I’m looking forward to what they have in store.
After reading the entire series, I know these people. I was frightened with and for them. I laughed with them. I cried, and I ducked, and I was exhausted with them.
This is an unlikely band of family. It was unlikely that they would survive, but they not only survived, but managed to grow, mature, and thrive.
There were a couple of points where I thought that the authors could not possibly move them on in a believable way. But they did. That is what makes this such a great story. Not only could I see the scenarios happening, I believed that each character is capable of doing everything that they did.
This series is exhausting, exciting, detailed in all the right measures at all the right points.
It wasn't great and it wasn't terrible. What it was, was too wordy. The author took two pages to say something that could have been said in two paragraphs. The number of coincidences was way too many and the last book ended in such a way that I had questions unanswered. The story was fine, and the characters were not badly portraited. But some of the background and descriptions could have been better. As I got to the last book, it was evident that the author was just trying to "wrap" things up. This spoiled the rest of the story for me. The amount of duplication used in telling the story was such that I skipped over many paragraphs. Not a book I would want to read again and not an author I would seek out for other titles if they were similar.
Just coming off of the “Tide” series and waiting for the last in it’s series I wanted something that I thought would be interesting but not of the same genre. Boy did this fit the bill. I started reading the first book thinking that I could put it down when my other series comes out (was I wrong!!) Once I started I couldn’t stop, so many engagements with the Fraser’s and the rest I hardly had time to breath. By the end of the series I was starting to suffer sleep deprivation. Good job, Justin and Mike, I now have two more writers that I follow. Until next time, read you later!!
Completely implausible. NORTH KOREA??? C'mon. Don't any of these authors ever consider the U.S. Navy. If a series of bombs ever were set off on U.S. soil heaven help the antagonists as they would be toast in a few hours from our Nuclear subs. 11 and 12 year old taking on battle hardened commando's. A 16 year old defeating commando's in hand to hand combat. None of the family gets seriously injured or killed except at the end with bullets flying all around them. A Mother who keeps screaming keep the children safe then lets them go into combat. So called American Patriots teaming up with a hated enemy. A fun read, but completely implausible.
One family’s rolling gunfight across America.......
This book starts off fairly mundane but within a few pages it winds up to be the start of something a lot larger than just a shooting in rural America. Suitcase nukes are used to cripple the USA. There is one family that starts off to find their daughter on the other side of the US only to find that they’ve become a major threat to terrorists.
After reading Darkness Rising, the development of each character stands out in spades! Bell and Kraus have done a fantastic job in building on each book to continue to move you forward and keep the spell binding story foremost in your desires. Just to keep on with the story is recapturing and totally engrossing for me. I think anyone reading these type of novels will be thrilled also
I’m still wiping my tears away while I write this review. This has been a fantastic series and I’m so glad I was able to read the whole boxset at once. It would have been unbearable to have to wait a month or more between books! This is the best Mike Krause book I’ve ever read because of his collaboration with Justin Bell. Mike has his own unique way of writing and his stories are always good, but this collaboration is a perfect fit!
I like the way the characters came together. How members of the same family can think so different. It reminds me of the division of our country now. Hopefully we don’t go that far but it could happen. I would recommend this story to anyone that likes apocalyptic story lines. I pick this rating because I was sad to see it end. These are the type of stories I like they could really happen.
This was a good read, although at times it was a bit hard to believe that the Fraser group were able to out gun trained operatives such as Ironclad and the North Koreans. Unusually for Mike and Justin, there were quite a few errors, the most irritating of which was using 'clamor' and its different tenses instead of 'clamber'. Apart from that, this is a good storyline, a d the authors are not afraid to kill off main characters.
Great reading about the frasers and their challengers asthey complete their journey anf grow up togther in this world. The story reminded me of the walking dead however that story has a korean who is a good guy who ends up dead
Read this and hope you like it also. That is my opinion and ive sat thru many hrs of the walking dead for the last couple of years
I was disappointed with this tome. It is nothing more than a rag tag group of kids, their pare t-shirt, and a few FBI agents against well trained militia, national security companies, and the North Koreans. Guess who lost. Not the kids which made this long story unbelievable to me.
Although I have read each book in the series as they became available, nothing compares to reading them straight through. Total immersion. It doesn't get better than this. I know the people, by the time I finished they were real. Congratulations on another great series. I think I've read everything the author has written.
To many words. Seemed like it took forever to move on. I know they were trying to paint a picture. I found an error toward the end . Brad was mentioned but he was not there. I think it was Rhonda talking to Phil. Not Brad. I did like the storyline and the ending was well done.
Ok first off the reason for 4 stars not 5. In the first couple of books the antagonist just will not go away, they keep on running into him. But the story line is very good and a lot of action. After the first book, I couldn’t but my kindle down. The characters come to life and truly grow as the books progress.
I m giving this work of art, five stars because of the absolutely beautiful way this book was written. Also because of the depth of the characters. The depth of each and every situation, made you feel as if you could have been right there with them. I would also recommend this set of books to anyone who enjoys apocalyptic survival fiction!
If you love apocalyptic stories, this series is the one to read. You will feel like you are part of the story. If only I was a badass like Rhonda! I have to say that there were moments when I was to nervous to read the next page because i didn't want to feel what came next. This series will definitely take you on a roller coaster of emotions.
Hold on to the seat of your pants, you are in for the ride of your life.
Two thumbs up to the authors. This story seemed so current as to be totally plausible. The character development was absolutely spot on. I knew every single one of them. Those I liked and those I didn't like. This is a must read for anyone who likes apocalyptic books.
Really exciting and constant action going on . Also the family and romantic touches (Angel @Rebecca) had me hooked on reading the book , nothing I did not like about the story although would have loved for Clancy and Brandon to have survived. All in all great book would recommend to friends who like syzygy and action .
I read a lot of these books, because of that I like to read one from the beginning to the end. If I have to wait for the next book to come out in a month I have all ready read 3 or 4 of these types of books. Will look for another series. Good job Justin, keep writing
This was an awesome series about the end of the world as we know it today. Imagine a nation without electricity. It boggles the mind. You take a journey with The Fraser family. It has drama, terror, love scenes, action and adventure in each chapter. Well worth readimg!!
I found the story line so complex and interesting and fortunately so far from probability that I can still sleep comfortable in my bed. I agree that you both work well together and it seems a very good story line that it could be adapted for a TV series. Well done, both of you. Gramps
A mindblowing experiece...the whole series! Memorable characters whose experiences cause you to worry, to cheer, to cry, to chuckle & to laugh out loud. Riveting action & convoluted plotline bring the storyline realistically into perspective. Downright scarily so. Couldn't put the books down.
Just finished this series about a family caught up in the aftermath of a nuclear strike. They were separated from their oldest daughter who was off to college. There are many challenges as they travel to find her, picking up others along the way. This series is a must read.
A family vacation gets very serious when nukes start to explore around the USA. Running from trouble seems to be the new way of life now as they try to survive and find they other daughter. Action packed SiFi thriller that is a must read!!!
My rating was the best I could pick. This series could happened today. It was so real, and all the people seem so real. Each one went though hell. It's hard to say all the thing about this serise. I ll would tell people to read this, it's great.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and loved the characters in the story, although Rhonda annoyed me a couple of times. Noticed a couple of name mistakes but this series deserves five stars. Well worthreading
What an amazing ride this was with "The Fraser family"! I stopped reading with only 43 pages left because I did not want it to end......... I did finish and was very happy with the ending. I love when a book makes me laugh and cry and gets my heart racing. This series was non stop!!!
