Roger A. Caras was an American wildlife photographer, writer, wildlife preservationist and television personality.
Known as the host of the annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, Caras was a veteran of network television programs including "Nightline," "ABC News Tonight" and "20/20" before devoting himself to work as president of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and to becoming an author.
I first encountered this as an excerpt in a book of animal stories for young readers. Nature red in tooth and claw was very much present; this may have presented a good picture of the American mountain lion and its world, but it did not make me rush out to buy the book.
Suffice to say that when I later read the whole it was a portrait of an intelligent predator from birth to death in his wild environment. However as the big cat does not interact in a friendly way with humans, this book was destined not to become so famous as stories of wolf-dogs or mustangs.
The author stood for animal welfare and wrote many books.
